WOW! Wonderful, wonderful place! Visited for a friend's wedding, stayed two nights. My friend rented the entire place out so they were able to accommodate her weekend amazingly! If you choose this option, MAKE SURE you have a wedding planner! The Ballastone hosts were exceptional in allowing her wedding planner to move furniture around for the wedding and reception! I mean, they completely turned over the main sitting room for both the wedding and then again for the reception and had everything back where it was meant to go by the end of the evening. The Ballastone hosts were absolutely amazing, I think his name was Derek! He was SO hospitable, friendly and wonderful to talk to! He gave recommendations for places in the area to visit and was just overall a nice, friendly person! Also so accommodating! We had to store all our wine in their fridges. If you're hosting an event here, I would recommend ensuring you have an extra room for anything that will need to be stored at any given time. This is what worked out for this event and it was a life saver for storing extra wine, tables and chairs and decorations for before setting up the sitting room for the wedding and then also for switching out the sitting area for the reception! We used the room right behind the check in desk and it was PERFECT! The place itself is so cute and quaint, with a southern old-world charm. The way they decorate it for the Christmas holiday was absolutely GORGEOUS! The Inn itself and also the area surrounding is absolutely a gorgeous area for wedding photos! My friend got some amazing shots! I would love to visit here again and would definitely recommend as a bed and breakfast for any couple that wants a romantic getaway or even for an event!!! read more

Staying here was an absolute dream! The Ballastone Inn is beyond charming and so uniquely Savannah. The staff could not have been more gracious and helpful. Everyone we interacted with was so personable, welcoming, and friendly. Housekeeping is beyond amazing - each day we returned to a room that felt so fresh and nicely cared for. The Inn is romantic. Breakfast is a continental breakfast served on fine china, and the seating area fosters pleasant conversation with your neighbors. This was our first time staying in Savannah, and the location has the perfect access to everything in the historic district, is a short walk to the river or Forsyth Park in the opposite direction. Staying at this inn was by far our favorite part of our Savannah trip. The staff is AMAZING here. Maybe the best I've ever experienced. I asked someone if they had any beach towels - she said no, but about 3 seconds after I'd asked, she dropped some more bath towels off in my room to use on the beach. The breakfasts here are incredible. Thoughtful, well-prepared, and always on time. Sometimes they have homemade cinnamon rolls that were just WHAT'S UP. And, even though the place was full of old Victorian decorations, they somehow keep it incredibly clean. The location was also a huge plus - we were right in the center of Historic Savannah, walking distance to anywhere we wanted to go. read more

We wanted to go to Savannah since it was our first time. Not knowing where we should stay, I tried to book something near the river. Having not found anything near the river I luckily found the Ballastone Inn. It is centrally located and the staff were amazing. It's more no than 10 minutes to the river and about 10 minutes to Forsyth Park. Derrick and Jim are helpful about recommending places to eat and to visit. Both are true southern gentlemen. This B&B is gorgeous. Even if you dont get an opportunity to stay here, at least walk in and see the decor. I stayed here for a night with my boyfriend recently. It was so relaxing and pleasant. The staff were very kind. The other guests were fun to talk to during tea time, happy hour and breakfast. The rooms were just stunning. I have nothing bad to say. Where to begin....this weekend was at least about family as it was intended to be. My husband and I had been to Savannah before, but never to the Ballastone Inn. We were encouraged to buy a parking pass though the inn, which is what we did upon arrival. We were told we could park in any metered parking or city parking lot garage. After driving around several streets and garages for about 30 minutes, we were able to find a spot in a public parking garage which is where we thought we could park. When we went back to the inn we double checked how we were to get out of the garage if someone was not there and had to use the machine. We were told someone would be there and it would no problem. Not the case! We left midday, on a Sunday and there was no one at the gate, so we had to pay $30 on top of the $24 we already paid the Ballastone. When we went back to the inn to dispute the charge we were told to call the city of Savannah because we were double charged. Upon arriving home we did that, only to find out that even though the garage said public parking, it was a private garage and they were not able to refund us. We called the ballastone, explained and were told they were not going to refund us. So now we have paid $54 to park for 2 days in Savannah and that's completely unacceptable. If there was certain garages we were supposed to park in, we should have been told that. You would think if they sell a pass they would have a map or something to explain all acceptable parking garages since parking on the street is hard to find. At the inn we usually stay in Savannah they offer parking on site and after this weekend I greatly appreciate that amenity even more along with much better customer service. For the rest of our visit ... I realized by going online a few days before that the room we paid for was available. I called because I was concerned we would not have a room, and they did not mention we were given an upgrade for booking early, they just said ok I see and switched us. Upon arrival we found out all of our visiting family had upgraded rooms except us. We selected our room for a reason but it would have been nice to know when we called that was an option. Our room was nice, smaller then what we were used to and noisier though. One of the reasons we chose the room was for the tub with jets, since that is something we do not have in our home. Too bad it took 30 min to fill and even though the drain was pulled tightly closed, the water still was slowly draining....disappointment. The wi-fi in the room never worked either l. As for the 24 hour available staff, each evening when we came back, well before 11 we never saw anyone. For the cost we paid to stay, the location may be central but the amenities, food and hassle with parking don't justify the cost. My husband and I work hard for our money like many other people, and save up for nice getaways such as this. Its unfortunate the Ballastone inn, being a 4 Diamond AAA rated place to stay did not live up to our expectations. Savannah is a great place to stay, but if you elect to buy parking, especially from this inn beware! ****update: the ballastone inn called us apologized and refunded the parking pass we bought from them, which we greatly appreciate. read more

This inns public areas (lobby, breakfast area) is as beautiful as it gets, right in the heart of savanna, and the service is impeccable. You can't go wrong with booking this inn....unless, you get one of the half basement rooms. Well even then it is not entirely 'wrong' but for the amount of money you are paying - i definitely think you should get a room that is not in the basement. To get to these rooms (I believe one of them is called Low Country), you have to take the back stairs and go down two sets of stairs. Then you walk past the laundry (tumbling during the day) and the kitchen (especially busy during the morning) and get to the end of the hall, where the room is. The furnishing in this room is beautiful, just like the rest of the inn, so old world and colonial, but unfortunately it is only skin deep. The floor is hideous plastic parquet, uneven, so obvious hastily done to expand capacity - there are parts of the floor which suddenly end and parts where there are exposed pipes with wires coming out (??). Similarly the bathroom looks like it is a dorm bathroom. Absolute basic tiles, and very shoddy wooden baseboard work. This is not what can be expected from a room for which you have paid 100s of dollars per night. After all this, when you look out of the window you can see wheels of cars going by (because you are half below the ground) and people staring through the windows. No No No. I didn't want to spoil our one Valentine's day there by complaining and being difficult but really, this is not the quality to be expected. The best part about the served breakfast was the spice poached pear. The best part of the served tea was the tomato olive swirls. So basically, if you are going to book a stay here - demand that you be put in one of the upstairs rooms. You definitely are paying for it, so dont be short changed. read more

The Inn itself is gorgeous and historic, and we loved our four night stay. But what really sets it apart from other B&Bs is the staff. Derek, Jolly, Jackie, Monique and everyone else whom we encountered were over the top hospitable, even by the standards of the Hostess City. At one point we joked that maybe we were being mistaken for raters renewing the Inn's numerous five diamond status awards. Can't say enough about the hospitality here. I'd say it felt like we were family, but I certainly don't get this kind of pampering when I visit back home. All of the extras such as the delicious (and filling -- we never ate lunch during our stay in Savannah) breakfast, the tea hour, the hors d'oeuvres, and the port or sherry nightcap simply added to the value. Delish breakfast choices and my absolute favorite lox and cream cheese with capers on the weekends.. Only complaint was that maybe the windows could've maybe opened, I like to get a good nose full of the morning sky. Off street parking is pretty cramped, but free. because of the age of the establishment and the 'creekiness' of the hardwoods to be mindful of other guest I caught stepping lightly or 'sneaking around' when it wasn't necessary. read more

I have been visiting Savannah for 30 years & stayed in many inns in this beautiful city. I've got to say the Ballastone is my favorite. Centrally located, with wonderful staff, impeccably clean and great food.... I am disabled and they went out of their way to ensure my comfort - helping w parking, getting our bags in, loading the elevator, etc. Finley was so kind and gracious and our suite was beautiful - clean, spacious, & quiet. We arrived before check in on a rainy cold day, but but were invited in to relax in the bar w a glass of wine until our room was ready. Finley lit a fire and we settled in... before long a few of us were chatting, enjoying the beautiful main room and completely forgetting check in lol! Later on, we enjoyed a beautiful high tea downstairs and relaxed before our night out. Miss Janice took care of us and our room and was so kind and friendly - we truly felt like we were staying at a friend's home. Truly a memorable experience. Antique charm and ambience coupled w modern conveniences made this a great stay. Definitely will be back! read more

I made an on-line, direct (NO HOTEL BOOKING SERVICE), 1 night (Friday 3/18/21) reservation at Ballastone on 1/7/21. They immediately charged my credit card 100% & sent me confirmation #R5DKZT35. Then on 2/21/2, 45 days later (25 day before I was due to arrive), they cancelled my reservation, claiming "2 day min stay was a requirement". I choose Ballastone becasue it appeared to be a quality establishment, but THE WAY THEY DO BIZ IS AWFUL and in my opinion, they used my $$ for 45 days and when they got a 2 night request they "bumped" me. They knew I lived in NJ, was just passing thru and assumed that it couldn't hurt their biz & I have no problem with their min 2 night requirement (many B & B's have this policy), BUT their web site should have indicted such, and if that was a mistake, they should have told me long before 45 days so I could make other plans. That said, I made a new reservation at The Inn at West Liberty which is also in Savannah, Ga & hopefully I'll receive better treatment from them. read more

I do not recommend this establishment. High tea was an embarrassment, brownies and macaroons, and cheese finger sandwiches, not the pastries shown and touted in the reviews of best inns. Ordurves were a joke some runny dip and crackers. No finger food as advertised. Was awoken at 6AM SUNDAY morning to move my car legally parked around back for workers to put up two electric poles outside my two windows. 12 men and two cherry pickers noise and no privacy at 6AM SUNDAY morning. NO mention of relocating my room rude staff and useless front desk attendant who could do nothing without owner who was not there. I was told she would call me, its 3 days later i am still waiting and was not able to get in touch with her by phone. Breakfast was awful sausage blinis and grits. It did not seem to be prepared by a professional(opnion only). $386 a night it is a rip off. read more

The best part of this Inn is the location--in the heart of everything--but the actual accommodations are pedestrian. For close to $400/night, we got an average room and breakfast. In all fairness, most of the staff was friendly and professional, but the operations manager, Derek, was inefficient and rude (all the while, giving the impression that he is trying to be oh so accommodating). My biggest complaint is that I was on a business trip and needed a simple itemized receipt for my stay. I explained all of this to Derek in person, but when I asked for it as we were checking out, the employee said that Derek forgot to do it. She said he would be in the next day and that I should contact him. When I did, he said it was too complicated and that it would take too much "time and effort away from my duties caring for current guests". It has been over 2 months and I still haven't received a receipt. We are talking about an email with an attachment (seriously!). The bottom line is that there are many places to stay in Savannah, and you can do much better and probably much more reasonably. read more

Absolutely loved the Ballastone. From the Inn itself to the wonderful staff, our stay definitely exceeded our expectations. We were lucky enough to stay at the Ballastone Inn using a Living Social deal, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford it for both nights that we stayed in Savannah. After staying here I realize that it is well worth the price tag. We stayed in the Victoria room. The photos online do not do it justice! I thought that it looked a bit gaudy from the online photos but wanted this suite because of the jetted tub. Upon entering the Victoria suite I was amazed that it wasn't gaudy at all but rather tastefully decorated. The king size bed was very comfortable and the sheets were simply divine. I loved the fact that there were bed steps to get into the over sized bed. I also loved the chandelier - it was very elegant and added charm to the room. We got to check out some of the other rooms that weren't occupied. All the rooms are beautiful but after our stay I have to say the Victoria was my favorite of the rooms we were able to tour. You won't go hungry if you are staying at the Ballstone. Starting with breakfast, we had the chef's special each day and it was delicious. The first day was cinnamon french toast. I don't even like french toast but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The second day was a traditional breakfast - eggs, bacon, potatoes or grits. It was all perfectly prepared. I need to know how they get their scrambled eggs so fluffy! In the afternoon they have tea served with pastries. Again, everything we tried was delicious. And then later in the evening they offer hors d'oeuvres - all were very good. The staff was all very pleasant and helpful. Melissa was sweet enough to help us carry all our luggage to the room and went over all the details about our stay. She directed us to the off street parking behind the Inn and because of the awesome proximity to everything we didn't move our car until it was time to leave. Jasmine was also very sweet and helpful in making recommendations. She was a pleasure to talk to. The breakfast staff was also wonderful (I think it was Matt and Ryan). My husband's eggs were slightly over cooked and they replaced them without hesitation. They were very attentive. I'm very impressed with the commitment to customer service at the Ballastone. We really felt like we were staying at a friend's home. We will definitely be back! read more

The Ballastone Inn is beautiful. We were in town for a wedding and although we could not lounge around, or partake of the Inn's many lovely amenities, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We stayed in the Victoria Suite and our daughter stayed in the Gazebo Suite. Both rooms were lovely. I preferred the decor of the Gazebo suite but our daughter did too and would not trade. (I don't blame her.) Don't get me wrong; the Victoria Suite was beautiful in every way possible but there's something so calming and peaceful about the Gazebo Suite. You really can't go wrong with either of them. The highlight of our stay was the delicious breakfast every morning. Their scrambled eggs were the fluffiest, most delectable eggs; you will ever have the pleasure of eating! And the wonderful cook was kind enough to share the recipe. (Wink...wink...) ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Pricey, but well worth it. Jim, Jennifer and their staff make it so easy to relax and enjoy yourself. Great location - let them park your car -you can walk all over downtown. We stayed in the Victoria Suite and enjoyed everything The Ballastone had to offer: breakfast, afternoon tea/lemonade, pre-dinner hors d' oeuvres, turn down service and a full service bar. Disappointing is an understatement. After reading the great reviews, my wife and I booked two nights at The Ballastone Inn. Derek greeted us, began check-in process, then proceeded to abandon us standing at the desk with no explanation, then someone from the back office strolled out and finished checking us in. Upon entering the room, it was immediately apparent that "Historic" and "dirty" have the same meaning to the people who operate this business. Our shower curtain had mildew, there was a thick coat of dust around the floor boards and crumbs and a bobby pin under the bed. The Bathroom sink was clogged, as well as the tub. The A/C only set to 70, so sleeping was miserable, as it was the month of June and adding to the misery was the loud rumbling of the A/C unit, along with the rock hard bed and bedding that felt like it had not been laundered. Luckily, we had brought along sanitizing wipes, and used half of the container wiping the room down. On one evening, I went to the bar to order a drink, and Derek was there chatting away with another guest. I stood there a moment waiting for Derek, he then walked behind the bar and turned the light out and told me he was closing it down for the night, although, it was five minutes to closing the bar. Derek told me that he needed to get home. I left and went back to the room, and my wife and I decided to walk around the Inn a bit, and we saw Derek sitting at the desk, looking like he had no particular place to be, but just ten minutes prior, he had refused to pour a drink for me, which would have taken all of less than a minute. We noticed that he stayed at the desk another half hour at least and then left. We never had breakfast, as they only offer honey buns that you can pick up at any convenience store, and they also offered boxed cereal. There was a slim selection of Keurig coffee and tea, and no decaf to be found. It could just be us, but we expected more from a B&B charging these prices. Christine checked us out, and since she asked how our stay was, we let her know about the issues and that we were disappointed. Her first response was "you should have told us earlier". For the prices, we do not feel that it is our responsibility to let them know that they should replace the $5 mildewed shower curtain, and run a mop around the floor, and unclog the sink and tub. The last thing that we wanted to do is spend our vacation time waiting on someone to come in and clean, while we are staying in the room. Christine seemed genuinely mortified, and especially interested that Derek had shut the bar down early on me, but then basically told me that I should have pressed him for a drink. Again, this is not professional and I was not there to train them on how to run a stellar B&B. Christine ended our conversation by promising that the owners would be reaching out to us, as she felt that our experience was unacceptable. It's been a full month, and we still have never heard from anyone from The Ballastone Inn. There are too many beautiful and well run B&Bs in Savannah that we have stayed in, we'll be sure to cross this one off the list. read more

Stayed here from October 5-8, 2013 and absolutely loved our stay. We had a slight problem upon check-in with our room and the next 2 nights they upgraded us to the China Suite which was elegant and really exemplified our trip to the South from Los Angeles. The staff and breakfasts could not have been any better. Latifa, who served us our fantastic breakfast each morning was warm, charming and a real delight to talk to. We chose to eat our meals in the outdoor patio area of the Inn which is beautifully adorned with a koi pond and delightful shrubbery. The location of the Inn was perfect and an easy walk anywhere in the historic district of the city. Not only would I recommend this Inn, but if we ever are fortunate enough to visit Savannah again, The Ballastone Inn is the "ONLY" place we would stay. read more

We stayed in the Scarlett's Retreat room and, except for the bed being too soft for me (my wife loved it however), it was very accommodating. We absolutely loved this place. My husband and I left California for a much needed romantic getaway. We stayed at the Ballastone Inn through a Livingsocial deal. After a long 6 hour flight. We arrived at the Ballastone Inn at 10 pm. We were greeted by Kristin with her warm and friendly smile. we booked the Mulberry Tulips junior suite, which by the way may I say that the pictures on line don't do this room nor the Inn justice. Our room was just breathtaking and so romantic. We didn't want to leave our room. Each morning we ate in the Courtyard (which by the way was just beautiful) and had the chief special for breakfast. I typically don't like French toast but, this Cinnamon French toast here was just to die for, actually... I'm not going to lye. I loved it so much I had it twice. My husband had the grits which he loved as well. Living in Orange County, CA we can't find grits that tasted this good. The food and service was just amazing. The Inn was centrally located within walking distance to everything that wanted to see and take part in. I could truly say that my husband and I fell in love with each other all over again and we've been together for 29 years. We absolutely loved the Ballastone Inn and Savannah, GA. In fact we are planning to send our married children here is so they can experience the romance and beauty of the Ballastone Inn as well. It was difficult to leave this place! read more

We had a perfect stay at Ballastone for a girls trip! We stayed in the Savannah room which is the only room with 2 beds. The room and beds were very comfortable and roomy! We had a great view overlooking court yard. The location is great, close to everything. i could go on all day about how great the staff is!!! Everyone was so nice and accommodating! Really and truly they treated us like rock stars! The food was excellent! if you go don't miss High Tea or wine at 6:00 best homemade treats! The Inn is a lovely old building complete with charm. The bathrooms are in need of renovation...toilets, sinks, showers poorly done. Parking is a problem.....very little so you must purchase a parking pass for the street. When upon leaving, I had earlier paid the bill, the manager insisted I wait for a second copy. My friend booked this hotel as the reviews on google seemed excellent, giving it a steady 5 stars. The pictures told us that the hotel would have historic charm and we liked the idea of staying at a bed and breakfast. We arrived on 2/23/17 and made our way up the steps to the hotel. We weren't quite sure what to expect when we opened the door to the house. We were greeted by a young lady who had us follow her up to our room, which was located on the 5th floor. We were told "tea time" is every day around 4:00pm and breakfast is at 8:30am and 9:30am, but must be signed up for the night before. I noticed the smell old houses tend to get and also got a wiff of the perfumes they had spread out all over the place. Being incredibly sensitive to scents, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to stay there for very long without getting a migraine but we continued onward. The room was very humid and hot when we arrived, but we didn't think anything of it and instantly turned on the AC. I set my things down and noticed a used tissue sitting near the bed on the floor and crumbs behind the couch. The bathroom was very outdated and felt like we were stepping into a small/medium sized closet. There was also a couple gnats in our room, which I guess is normal for Savannah this time of year. We left our things then toured the town. We arrived back at the hotel sometime later in the evening to gather warmer clothes before heading out for dinner. The sounds from outside seemed louder than they should have been. Turns out, our window was half open WITHOUT a screen in it thus letting in bugs. I closed it then we tried turning down the AC more. It would not go past 70 which was frustrating but understandable since hotels sometimes put "holds" on how cold guests can make their rooms. Needless to say, it was not a comfortable sleeping temperature. The AC was also loud and sounded broken or like something was caught in the fan. We went out for dinner then bought a fan for extra noise since the streets were loud with sirens, people chatting, and honking. We also didn't want to hear people walking up and down the creaky stairs in the house or hear them inserting a key to their rooms. It helped some, but not a lot. We talked to the young lady about the AC that night and how this hotel had not met our expectations. We didn't feel the room was cleaned properly (there was also a build up of dust in our lamp) and that we didn't want to stay for the second night. She said she was sorry that the hotel wasn't meeting our needs and that we could talk to someone higher up the next morning, but she didn't think we could get a refund for the night we weren't planning on staying, just a voucher so we could come back at a later date. (Why would we want to travel back after that kind of experience??) The next day we expressed our concerns to the person higher up, and he didn't offer any remedies other than "we should have let them know sooner so they could have AC fixed, and that our room was checked by cleaning staff and maintenance prior to our arrival." We inquired about getting the manager's phone number and he said, "oh, we really can't give that out. I wish we could convince you two to stay." We also asked about getting the manager's email address and again were told that it wasn't "available" to the public and that we could call the hotel later on if we wanted. He said the manager is aware of our issues and would be sending us an email later that day. We left feeling very unhappy that we had spent so much money on a place that seemed more like a tourist trap to us. Management NEVER sent us an email, even though our information was left. We checked our email later that evening and checked again over the next couple of days. Looking at some of the reviews on here, it seems like this happens more often than not to tourists. That is a lot of money to lose on our end for an unpleasant experience. I personally could not stay in that house any longer as the scents were too much for me. Getting a migraine was not worth it.
