So, I was a little torn when thinking about how to review Jewel Hair Design. They did an amazing…read morejob in my wedding hair trials, but ended up leaving me in the lurch when it came time for the actual Big Day. Lemme 'splain:
After glowing recommendations from several friends who had used Jewel HD for their own weddings, I booked with stylist Isobel for my January 23, 2016 wedding. I had a really great trial with her at their studio up in Ellicott City (which cost $100, not included in the cost of booking), giving me an awesome vintage-y wedding updo that I was super excited about. I booked Jewel HD to do the hair for my entire bridal party.
Flash forward to 2 months before my wedding, and I receive an email from the owner of Jewel HD, Julie, informing me that Isobel had unexpectedly quit and they were assigning a different stylist to me. She offered me another hair trial free-of-charge, but only if I went back up to their Ellicott City studio (which is a pretty long trek from where I live in Northern VA.) When I asked for an in-home trial, Julie initially said that I would have to pay for that. She ended up agreeing to an in-home trial, but only after I pushed for it.
Anyway, I got another hair trial with Denita, who did an even better job than Isobel had previously! I was very pleased with the results, and very excited about my upcoming wedding. But, of course, there's more to the story.
See, for those that are not already aware, my wedding day ended up being the day that Winter Storm Jonas, the blizzard of the century, came to town. So, due to the crazy circumstances, Jewel HD did not actually end up doing my wedding hair after all. Now, a crazy, outrageous blizzard is, of course, an understandable reason why a vendor might have to cancel on you for your wedding, but unfortunately, the way that everything ended up going down ended up leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth. Here's how it happened:
On the Tuesday before the storm hit, Julie called me pretty much freaking out about the impending blizzard. She asked me what I was going to do (was she hoping I'd tell her I was postponing the wedding?) and went on to explain how nothing like this had ever happened to her before, and she didn't know what to do. It wasn't exactly a reassuring, professional call. She asked if I'd be willing to put Denita up in a hotel for the storm, which I agreed to, and she said she'd have to chat with Denita and get back to me about it.
The next day, I receive an email from Julie saying that instead of taking me up on my offer to put Denita up for the storm, they were going to take a "wait and see" approach, as Denita didn't want to get pinned down for the entire weekend and they weren't sure if she'd be able to make it home. No mention of subbing in another stylist, or of coming up with any other kind of solution, just that they would "wait and see."
Obviously, this was not a real solution, as it not only meant that Denita almost certainly wouldn't make it (she'd be coming from Silver Spring), but that I wasn't able to seek out an alternative. I ended up telling Julie that I would rather find someone else who was located closer, and she did agree to refund my money -- however, her wording in the email made me feel like she was doing me a favor by "allowing" me to cancel without paying a penalty.
In the end, I know that Jewel Hair Design does excellent work, and they are a great (and very competitively priced) option for special occasion hair. However, after my experience I don't feel confident in saying that they would be reliable in a crisis, and on what is arguably one of the most important (and thus, most stressful) days of someone's life, I think you would want someone you can rely on not to add to the stress of the day -- blizzard or not.
