I've regularly frequented Bambao since it's opening and overall, I like the food. It can be hit or miss at times but more consistent than not. My review is in response to an encounter with "Steve" --after an attempt to return food that had hair in it. To skip all the other offenses like Steve not offering a refund, walking away without asking my name, or telling me he'd be breaking protocol but was open to make an exception; I believe it was the "trust" response I received that most threw me off when I asked for a receipt. Literally he said "trust" and followed with "trust me, trust God..." after I expressed that I don't understand how the refund would be processed when he didn't take my name, contact information, nor provided anything in exchange for me returning the food. The attitude was weird and I walked away with nothing. No receipt. No refund. read more

I'm on a not-really-declared-or-announced-because-no-one-cares mission to try all the local bubble tea places in the DMV. While it was a rocky start with a significant delay in my pick up order, the food certainly made up for it! I ordered the Crispy Mushroom bun with a side of edamame. Let's talk bun. Light, just the right amount of chew, and the perfect touch of sweetness to balance out the filling. Also, A+ on soaking up the good to the last drop sauce, which added a nice pop of tangy vinegar meets honey peanut sweetness. The mushrooms were generous in portion, well cooked and complimented the crispy tofu well. The edamame was perfectly cooked and not overly salted. Thanks to a Yes! Meal promotion, I was able to try a meal at Bambao. Before I even arrived, I was impressed. I ordered my meal online. I received an update that the bubbles for the tea wouldn't be ready for my scheduled pickup time. I was offered another option. Because, I was able to wait the extra minutes for the bubbles, I opted to wait. Walking in, I was impressed with the decor and signage. From the inside mural near the entrance to the sanitizing stations. I received my meal and wasn't disappointed. The chicken was crisp and had a sauce that gave the chicken a bit of heat. The crab rangoon was crisp, as well. The iced Vietnamese coffee was tasty, too. I was impressed that I was able to select my sweetness level. Being able to have bubbles (chewy, tapioca pearls sometime called boba) added to my iced coffee was a nice treat. I will definitely go back for another meal. read more

I really enjoyed the bulgolgi bowl, meat was flavorful and tender and the pickled cabbage was a nice compliment to the entire bowl. I was also a huge fan of the sambal honey fried chicken bun. Absolutely delicious - flavor wise and crispiness/taste of the batter. The bun while delicious was not the softest I've had before but it works very well with the dish. I wasn't too much of a fan of the taro milk tea. I ordered it hot but came lukewarm. The flavor also tasted artificial. Looking forward to returning and trying the other things on the menu. 6/19/2020 update- this place never fails me! Honest Moment: I was not privy to this place before, and it hadn't been bookmarked as one of my restaurants to visit (I have about 100 places I'm still trying to get to ). Yet still, when I found out about it and started craving Asian flavors, I knew this was where I needed to be. And right I was. The food is really good here! I read through a few reviews and not long after decided to order the sambal honey fried chicken bowl with half rice and half super greens (I do this at CAVA and at be.bim.bop so figured I'd carry over the tradition). I placed the order online, and to my surprise, there was a code to receive 15% off your first order. Jackpot! I also ordered the blueberry tarragon bubble tea/juice with strawberry bubbles. You get to choose the amount of sweetness. I suggest the tad sweet (or not sweet at all if you're going to add fruity bubble bursts. Otherwise, it'll be too sweet.) Ordering online was easy. The hardest part of the night was finding a parking spot. It's located right on the corner of Aliceanna and Central. I drove around twice before I found a spot. I've had worse parking nightmares, so this wasn't too bad. Picking up was easy. My food was hot... and ready (sorry Little Ceasar's - I had to do it). I decided (for the first time since the start of the global health crisis) to eat at one of the little tables set up outside. I was a little nervous to sit and eat and at the same time, too eager to wait to get back home to try it. I'm glad I sat and had the opportunity to enjoy it fresh! The chicken thighs were crispy, and the combo of sweet with a little kick after was good. The rice was cooked perfectly. The super"greens weren't my favorite. Included was a large piece of bok choy (which was really watery), shredded carrots, pieces of pickled daikon, and lettuce. Even though I didn't care much for the super greens, that didn't take away from how good the food was/is. Also, next time (because there will be a next time) I might ask for extra sauce in the side to dip it all in. The food also came with a dressing. It was really tasty but the food was too good to use it on. Honestly, one side note: I couldn't help but think I was cheating on Ekiben by going here, but I think this place offers something different. Plus, they have bubble tea! So going here, isn't like cheating on Ekiben. It's like deciding to go see one cousin and still loving your other cousin knowing you'll visit them soon. Had been craving boba and was delighted to see that all drinks are 50% off right now! My bf and I got the taro milk tea and the salted caramel oolong milk tea, with boba. The drink menu is limited, particularly their milk tea section which features two ginger options out of the 4 milk tea flavors so not very many classic flavors to choose. The taro milk tea was fine and the tapioca pearls themselves were chewy but without flavor/sweet taste. However, my drink (the salted caramel oolong) was not what I was expecting at all. First, the salted caramel at the top had tiny chunks in it and two, the tea did not taste like oolong at all - rather it just tasted like their lemongrass ginger milk tea instead. I had stepped out of the store already when I had my first sip but was so surprised by this that I went back in to ask and the staff said she was sure she made the salted caramel oolong. She offered to make me another but I took her word for it. Perhaps they add lemon ginger to their oolong tea here. It was sort of refreshing though, but just not what I wanted. In terms of social distancing, don't worry, I kept my 6 ft distance from the counter and the staff immediately put on gloves when she started making our drinks. Gonna ride the ability to do takeout until it gets taken away during #quarantine season. Happy to support Asian businesses at this time too. I ordered their popcorn chicken one year ago and their quality seems to have gone down since then. The breading this time was crispy, but too heavy on the cornstarch and lacked the five spice flavor I was looking for. I let the chicken sit in the dipping sauce for a few seconds to soften up the outer coating. It was a decent amount of food for a small lunch, considering I wasn't too hungry. The napa salad on the side was quite tasty though! I also ordered the blueberry terragon tea with no additional sugar and felt the balance of sweetness and tanginess was perfect. Ordered from here for delivery because I was craving something new and wanted to give Bambao a try. I got the Sambal Honey Fried Chicken Bun and the Popcorn Chicken. By the time I got my food it wasn't hot, instead it was barely lukewarm. I have a hard time believing it was made fresh because of this. Instead the popcorn chicken was soggy and almost cold like it had been sitting out for awhile, and the Sambal Honey Fried Chicken Bun was barely any better. Taste-wise I found myself really disappointed. The sauce that came with the popcorn chicken was decent. But without the sauce I did not taste any of the thai basil or spice salt... only salt, and lots of it. The Sambal Honey Fried Chicken bun had a similar issue, with the saltiness of it all overwhelming even the sambal sauce that was on the chicken. The piece of chicken was pretty thin too, and I found several bites of it just being salty breading. I will say though that the bun was pretty good, and one of the redeeming factors of my experience. However, even a few hours later the saltiness of everything I ate still lingers in my mouth. Overall I'd give Bambao, 2 or maybe 2.5 stars at most. I'm not sure if I'd ever order or eat from here again though, or recommend a friend to either unless drastic changes were made in the taste and quality of their food. read more

Great location! It's really close to Whole Foods. I had extremely high expectation for this place and they completely under delivered. They served me raw chicken... Yuck! I ordered a Classic Milk Tea ($4.50 for medium) with bubbles, no ice, less sweet and lactose free milk. As soon as I get my order, the top plastic burst open and I spill my tea everywhere. Fantastic -_- The tea was nice and strong but way too sweet, I did see them pouring condensed milk... and the bubbles were too hard. Overall, not the best milk tea I've had. In terms of food, I ordered Sambal Honey Fried Chicken Bao ($10.75) and Lemongrass Grilled Chicken Bao ($10.75). The fried chicken was great, juicy and crunchy. The Bao was a little cold so I wish that they heated that up but it was not a concern. It comes with Napa cabbage salad, the cabbage salad was bland and raw, I did not enjoy it. Here is the worst part: the grilled chicken... was raw. Please see the attached photo. I called them back and they said that they steam the chicken and then grill it for 45 mins. They ensured me that the chicken was not raw but... UMMM CHICKEN DOES NOT STAY THAT PINK IF ITS BEEN GRILLED FOR 45 MINS!!! I was thoroughly disgusted. However, they get 2 stars because Daniel (not sure if he was the owner) was nice enough to refund me my money and give me 15% discount for my next purchase but I don't think I will be getting the grilled chicken bao again... In the area for an event so my friend and I decided to grab lunch here. The reviews on Yelp seemed stellar so I read through them and decided what we should try. We got the popcorn chicken, crab rangoon and the bulgogi beef short rib bowl. The popcorn chicken had a really really weird texture and taste to it. My friend actually thought they were fried oysters. The chicken and crab rangoon were served with the same sauce and it didn't really compliment either of them. The sauce is not bad and maybe there is an app that it is served with that works well, it just seemed odd on these two items. The crab rangoon was incredibly greasy and in a spring roll wrapper. It wasn't terrible, but pretty much all crab rangoon I have ever had was better than this one (and cheaper). The bulgogi beef was flavorful and I thought the pickled asian pear complimented it well. The bowl was a nice size, just a little lacking on ingredients. I really hate to say it, but overall this place was sort of a miss for me. All I ended up eating were the pieces of bulgogi and pear. Ate here again with friends but got take-out this time. I ordered the Bulgogi buns and they were really good! It came with a surprisingly generous portion of flavorful, tender bulgogi beef. The bun is also larger than the ones you get at Ekiben so I feel like I definitely got more food. I found the sliced pear that they sandwiched between the buns to be a fun addition-- the soft crunch and sweetness went well with the rest of the ingredients. The sliced carrots and radishes served on the side were dressed in a light vinegrette that was nice to cleanse the pallet after the savoriness of the bulgogi. Also got the coconut pudding and it was very refreshing! My only complaint is that there wasn't enough! It came in a small container (about the size of the guac-sides you can get at Chipotle). Checked out this cute place with a couple of coworkers! We ordered a lot of food and shared it. MANGO FRUIT TEA: Delicious! It wasn't too sweet and the fruit flavor was very strong and fresh. POPCORN CHICKEN: A++++. I am Taiwanese, and this popcorn chicken was amazing. It's better than some of the places in Rockville, which is saying a lot. I can't eat spicy things, but my coworkers say that the sauce for it was also delicious. BULGOGI BAO: The bulgogi was marinated to the perfect flavor, the bao was a nice consistency, and it tasted great. Would definitely order this again, though they went a little overboard with the garlic. MUSHROOM BAO: Tasty, but the flavor was a lot more savory and heavy than expected. The mushrooms were a nice crispy texture. CRAB FRIED RICE: This one was a little disappointing. It wasn't really much to write home about. They also used imitation crab instead of real crab, which wasn't what we expected. SERVICE: We waited about ten-fifteen minutes for our food, which wasn't too long of a wait. You clean up after yourself so not much to comment on here. DECOR: I really liked how well-lit Bambao was. The upstairs seating area was cute and cozy, and was a great place to just hang out. It was $3 more expensive, but the serving size was not much larger. The oolong tea was very tasty. A previous reviewer commented about the plastic cover instead of a lid - this is standard for bubble tea. They also had a sample of the apple tea out which was sweet but very good. The crab rangoon were tasty, shaped like spring rolls, but $6 for just 3. Glad I ordered them, but won't be adding these to my order regularly. The upstairs was quiet despite the jackhammer work going on outside, but had a bit too much A/C for my taste. I really liked the crispy mushroom bao (sort of a Chinese sandwich, not what I have come to expect -- a steamed bun) and the included pickled cabbage salad with it was excellent. Overall memorably good. Their orange chicken was not the best I have ever tasted, but was still pretty reasonable. The egg roll was mediocre. Not worth the calories. Staff was helpful and welcoming. Happened to catch this place while on work trip. Looks like it's their first day (11/4) so I recognize service staff is still trying to get acclimated. Came around 7pm to a decent crowd waiting for their orders. Food (boba included) took a while to get out but it wasn't a red flag or anything. Lemongrass Ginger Milk Tea - I got the less sweet version with non-lactose milk. Drink wasn't too milky, but I also only detected hints of lemongrass and ginger. For some reason the tea felt like it was Jasmine but I have horrible taste buds so you probably shouldn't trust me. I do wish there was a stronger tea flavor, but maybe I over customized. The boba itself was a bit al dente. Imo it could stand to be a bit chewier. As it stands it was aite, but I am glad that my request for low sugar actually resulted in something not too sweet though. Coconut pudding: this is like what panna cotta would be if you made it out of coconut milk. The size of it was... Well, there's a reason why it's 2.25. Crab Cake Bowl - I'm basic as hell so I ordered it with cauliflower rice. And it was pretty good! Cauliflower wasn't too mushy, the crab cake portions were decent, and there was some heat to the dish. I do kinda feel like the crab cake itself kinda felt more mayo-y as opposed to being curry flavored, but again my taste buds are broken and you shouldn't listen to me. I will say - I might tone down the salt in the crab cake a tad and I would've liked a tad more sauce overall, but it was pretty good. Overall, it wasn't bad! Hello, I got there a little after they open. And it was worth walking over there. The front counter person was great. I didn't know they had even opened till I googled boba locations. I will being coming here a lot more; friendly staff great loaction, not to small. Great natural lighting. Menu isn't expensive. Everything is made to order. We tried this place as we were visiting the Harbor East area. The menu was pretty easy to navigate, and our food was served in a reasonable amount of time. It is nice to have the second floor seating area as an option. We got the popcorn chicken, teriyaki pork rib bowl, and Singapore rice noodles which were pretty tasty. Bambao has a really good menu going but not executed that well. For the Taiwanese fried chicken, it was not seasoned and the outer batter isn't what I usually expect from this dish. However, the fried rice and the sambal rice dish are better food choices they are well seasoned and big portions. For a boba place, the boba was not good. Bambao is a concept born out of an MBA program (not a culinary school), and that's about all you need to know about it. It hit's the check marks a successful trendy spot needs (modern clean decor, trendy food items, sleek uniforms, brightly lit) but also fails itself by jacking up price on inspired, but poorly executed dishes. My first gripe is that the bao, from the second half of the name, is in reference to the steamed buns. I am positive this was inspired by another trendy spot east of here, and this falls flat.. and rubbery and tasteless... in comparison. I'm not even sure they are actually steamed? I got mine stuffed with Bulgogi. The meat was tough and uninspired. Sure, it was a well stuffed sandwich, but it was far from inspiring. Yeah, it looked beautiful, but that was the only redeaming quality. At $10.50 it came with a side of cabbage salad, and could be a lunch - though a tad expensive for just that. I tried a piece of the fried chicken ($6) which seemed to be a good deal. Personal preference on this - but it wasn't cripy, and the meat is a mid of dark and light. If I would order this to split if I ever wanted a really light snack and a bubble tea. Last was the bubble tea. I got the Taro tea. It was quite pleasant at first. They serve it in a plastic wrap instead of a lid... so that's wierd, but I maybe more eco-friendly? The thing is, after about 10 minutes, I realized it's half ice. Once that started to melt, the tea became horribly watered down and unpleasant. at 6.25 for a large (you have to pay .50 extra for the boba) they should be able to afford serving it cold with less ice. I ordered this all for dine in - and it all came to the counter in to-go boxes, which seemed like an necessary waste of packaging. My overall opinion: The place is okay. My entire meal was edible, I finished the tea and I'm full. However, the price is way too high for what you get, and the signature item (steamed buns) is both an attempt at capitalizing on a trendy local spot, but also failing at replicating the item at all.
