I rarely write negative reviews because I know it's not easy to run a restaurant. But even when trying to be positive, I find it hard to recommend this place. I came as part of a large group dinner. I appreciate that they took large reservations and sat us in a nice spot in the middle of the restaurant. The server was nice and patient, but I did notice his jacket smelled like cigaret smoke. I asked what to get, since the menu is *huge* and overwhelming (I'm not sure why sushi, steak and pad Thai are on the same menu?). He recommended sushi, so I got a flaming dragon roll (I forget the exact name). Anyways, everyone else also ordered and the food came relatively quickly. Now...when I tell you this is the worst sushi I've ever had. Again, I hate being negative but I have to tell it like it is! When they first presented the dish, it was cool because they serve it on fire. I knew that they had sake in the dish (probably so the flame can keep going after they take it out of the kitchen). However, when I bit into it, the sake was *extremely* overpowering. I couldn't taste anything else except the sake. It was extremely alcohol-heavy and I could not finish the dish. I asked others to try it, and they all agreed that it was too heavy. The prices were also very high for what we got. The only food I enjoyed were the appetizers, but they were still unremarkable. Overall, I regrettably cannot recommend this place. None of the dishes stood out, and the sushi was shocking. read more

I visited this restaurant as part of a coordinated group dinner during a conference. We had one server for our table of 12 which shouldn't be a problem. Everyone ordered their food and he returned to say they were out of some type of sushi that my boss ordered which caused her to order something different. We waited and waited for our food to arrive to the point we had to check in with the server repeatedly. Two people received the order, then another couple while the rest of the table sat and waited for a good 15 mins before all had food. It was very odd that it didn't all come out together and that other tables were being served despite coming in later. I ordered the prime rib, cooked medium, which came with mashed potatoes, and I ordered green beans on the side. The prime rib as you can see in the pic is well-done, nearly a solid plank, and no juice which is unlike prime rib. Very unsat for the cost of prime rib. Things were so bad that we received our food before we received silverware to eat with. It's a very noisy restaurant where you have to yell to be heard. I would not advise returning to this restaurant until they get organized, managed, and staffed appropriately to provide a quality meal worth your time and money. I had the Asian Salad which was served with chopped, fresh napa & red cabbage, green onions, cilantro, carrots, almond ramen crunch, and a very delicious, sweet-soy dressing. I added shrimp. The salad was well portioned, pretty and absolutely delicious! In addition, I ordered the Kona Calamari, which is served with shishito peppers, sweety drop peppers and a spicy Motoyaki dipping sauce. The Motoyaki dipping sauce is TO DIE FOR! The calamari was fried to perfection. The portion is generous. The entryway door looks dark and can give first time visitors the impression they are closed. Don't let that deter you. Pull hard on the door and you'll find yourself inside of their fashionable foyer. The restaurant gives upscale, Asian minimalist chic ambiance. I absolutely loved their light fixtures. From certain angles in the dining room you can catch a glimpse of their talented staff cheffing it up. Our server was attentive and charming. Served us very quickly and checked on us throughout our delicious meal. Their ladies room is large, clean and well appointed. If you are into bathroom selfies this is your spot honey! Its been YEARS since I've been to a Kona Grill my experience was so far off from what I was used to. The menu seems to have changed and the prices have gone up. I got the avocado eggrolls (one of the OG items) and I was disappointed. Overcooked and overripe avocados. Coke was flat. My burger was ok. The server was...to put it nicely, doing the most. My friend and I decided to try Kona Grill during Restaurant Week, and it was a great choice. We enjoyed a three-course meal for just $35--an unbeatable deal! For my starter, I chose the Sweet & Bleu Salad and asked them to hold the spiced pecans. My entrée was the Sweet Chili Glazed Salmon, served with fried rice, and for dessert, I had cheesecake with a raspberry sauce. I also ordered a Strawberry Lemon Drop and a bottle of Fiji water. The restaurant is nicely furnished and the lighting is adequate. The service was amazing. They were busy, especially since a large party arrived before us, so there was a bit of a wait to be seated, but it wasn't too bad. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu, made great recommendations, and checked on us regularly. One thing I really liked was their pay-at-the-table terminal, which made the checkout process super easy. We didn't have to wait for the server to bring the check, and the system allows you to split the bill by the number of people in your party or itemize it however you want. My waiter brought my food but didn't bring me any silverware. I waited a few minutes before they brought me some plasticware, and informed me that they were in the process of washing dishes. I thought that it was a bit overpriced considering it had more white rice than chicken and vegetables. It was seasoned very well and I would recommend this menu item. Up to this point I was probably going to give them a 3 star rating based on customer service alone. But then right before I was paying my bill, one of the mangers asked me if everything was okay...so I shared my thoughts. The manger apologized for their poor customer service and honored my military discount. I'm not sure if I would return due to various reasons listed. My husband and his friend had a reservation at Kona Grill for Valentine's Day, but upon arrival, we walked into a chaotic scene. The computer system was down, leaving the hosts scrambling to determine who had reservations. They managed to sort things out, but the process was frustrating. We were seated by the kitchen--, it was an open kitchen, so which wasn't an issue at first. The atmosphere was mostly clean, and our waiter was friendly. However, drink options were limited to their specialty menu, so I couldn't even order a simple lemon drop. I settled for Prosecco, and my husband had an Old Fashioned. Our friend's wife requested hot tea, but they didn't have tea bags and instead offered to prepare tea in the back, which she declined. For appetizers, we had calamari with sweet peppers and avocado eggrolls, both of which were flavorful. My husband liked his avocado eggroll so much that he ate it quickly. For the main course, we ordered a mix of dishes, including salmon with rice and vegetables, New York strip steak with mashed potatoes, and penne pasta with garlic. Overall, the food was satisfying and one of the few highlights of the evening. Due to the seating confusion, we were placed next to children who were left unsupervised, even though it was well after 10 PM. While slightly disruptive, we tried to focus on enjoying our night. Unfortunately, the evening took a turn when another table reacted in shock--someone had spotted a roach. We saw it too as it scurried into a crack. That table was moved, but we had to stay put. A few minutes later, the roach made a second appearance, crawling on the dividing wall near the kitchen. The manager, caught off guard, knocked it down and stomped on it--right in front of us and nearby tables. She apologized, but by then, the experience was already ruined. Several guests left immediately. To make matters worse, our paid bill was split, but my husband's credit card was mistakenly charged for the full amount. When he returned to speak with the manager, they were hesitant to fix the issue but eventually acknowledged the mistake. He was told to wait until the next business day for the correction. This was my third bad experience at Kona Grill, all during busy events, and each time, the reservation system has been an issue. While the food is good, the recurring problems with service, cleanliness, and management make it a place I won't be returning to. If this hadn't been a surprise date, I would have opted for somewhere else. They have a lot of improvements to make. read more

Following the Monday Night Football Game between the Ravens and Lions, I was in desperate need of some late night grub. Thankfully for me, I was able to find a spot that was a three minute walk from my hotel with Kona Grill. Even though they were about to close, the staff was very friendly and accommodating - especially Ronnie, who was our server/bartender. In addition to the good service, the food came out fresh and delicious. I had the BBQ Chicken Flatbread (highly recommend), Chicken Satay, Chicken Fried Rice, and a Kona Margarita. I really wanted to like Kona Grill. Seems over time the reviews have gone downhill but I still wanted to give it a try in hopes that most of those experiences were one-offs. Ambiance - looks way nicer online. Fish tank wasn't bright and clear and overall the restaurant felt like it could use a refresh. Service - based on reviews and my experience this seems to be hit or miss. Our main server was a nice "get the job" done kinda guy but another server walked by and started chatting and joking with us. Would have loved for him to have served us but maybe my fault for sitting in the bar area. Menu/Food/Price - menu was decent in terms of variety. Prices are steep which I don't mind if the food is delish. Unfortunately the food was mediocre at best. Started with calamari (actually got it free for signing up as a rewards member) which was full of inedible tentacles. Kiddo, even though they have a kids menu, decided on pretzel rolls and mac n cheese (both on the sides menu). Pretzel rolls were edible but meh. Got no sauce and they were barely salted. Mac was bland. I got the chili glazed salmon which was good but not anything super special. Small portion for the price. Some of the worst food I've ever eaten. Everything was awful. First off they forgot to put the pretzel bites we ordered into the bag. The pretzel sticks that we got were bland and the mustard cheese with it was disgusting. The sliders tasted off and were missing the spread on them. The flatbread tasted stale. The fries were soggy. Constant complaints about wanting to go home by staff that gave the impression that they weren't interested in providing food service. Food was cool. I'm not hungry anymore so it served its purpose. As I was getting ready to submit my review, the bartender came over and was talking to us giving us some pointers on things to do in the area. So that interaction was cool. Parking in the area is a little wonky, but it is downtown baltimore. Once you get inside Kona grill, you forget all about the traffic and parking. Just a single, I sat at the bar. Super tired from the day, I wasn't really in the mood for more stimulation from too many TVs, and thank goodness the bar just has two. There was plenty of ambient noise around the restaurant, but the bar had a great vibe. The three bartenders were excellent, especially Diamond. At jer recommendation, I ordered a sushi combo platter that came with three pieces of sashimi, a spicy tuna roll if I recall correctly, and an Asian salad. Dinner didn't take long to arrive and time passed quickly with the crowd at the bar. The combo platter was definitely a full meal for a hungry guy. The bartenders were completely underwater and did everything they could to keep up....but when they have to apologize for misleading descriptions in the menu to level expectations, you know there is a problem. Upon arrival, the host promptly seated me, and Shaquille provided the menu and took a genuine interest in helping me choose my meal. I originally planned to order the flaming sushi, thinking it was cooked, but after chatting with Shaquille, I went with the salmon and fried rice instead--and it was absolutely delicious! As someone who loves to cook, I appreciated the balance of flavors, and the watermelon margarita was the perfect finishing touch. The man child who answered the phone hung up on me after he insisted my order was not in the system. He told me I shouldn't have given him my last name and should have led with my first name, all after keeping me on hold for 15mins at 12:30am. I had already told him exactly what I ordered, which included wagyu steak so not your usual order. He actually yelled at me saying I should have told him my first name. Then I told him my first name and he said I yelled at him, which I did not. I said I wasn't yelling and was simply telling him my first name and he hung up on me. I have never been so disrespected by someone after giving them nearly $100 for food delivery. This sort of behavior is unacceptable and disgusting. read more

We tried to order signature cocktails but the bartender told us they were out of 95% of the ingredients. Settled for Old fashion and the margarita that tasted terrible but the lettuce wraps and Glazed salmon was decent. Just upsetting because the area is in a decline and we wanted to support this restaurant. Really loved the look of this place is was very intimate lighting. Very spacious and inviting. So I will say that this spot was a bit short staffed but they were very kind and respectful. Food: I had a few drinks Ans the hh prices were bomb. They had levels 3$ 6$ and 9$ drinks and appetizers. The sliders were a major deal for 3 bucks. The drinks were decent and the price was lovely.
