My entire family is so disappointed in what's happened to the Bamboo House restaurant. We have been going here for over fifty years and three generations of our family. The new owners have destroyed what was an incredible place with the best food around. No longer do they have spareribs, if you order moo shi pork for the table they only give two tiny tortillas, the flavors of sauces isn't good and absolutely no substitutes like the last owner would do. The lady at the front is rude! After over 50 years we're calling it quits!!! read more

The main dish Si-chain was very good. The egg drop soup was salty, the egg roll were not very good. I went at 3:00 so they were not busy but service was slow. I didn't mind because there was no hurry but I noticed. The room was old, dark, and seats ancient. The tea was bagged tea. The price was reasonable. This is the most beautiful and delicious Chinese food restaurant so far we've been experiencing in San Diego. Everything is super well made and delicious. If you want to try something very authentic, you should come over to ask for the Chinese version menu. My first recommendation is the smoke bacon and bamboo shoot, they shipped the bacon from a local farm in China! It tastes amazing. The meatballs are my son's favorite, he's only 15 months and he ate 4 meatballs! I also recommend the Zhangjiajie Noodles, it feels super authentic and makes me feel like in that village where this noodles comes from. If you love spicy, you can also ask the waitress to give you some recommendations, they have real authentic spicy food. Lunch plate was large BUT egg roll almost burnt so was the wantons. No special sauce just what tasted like catchup. Rice wasn't white but looked like soy sauce was added to it so were the noodles. I had shrimp in lobster sauce. The sauce was brown. I've never had brown lobster sauce before it's always a white sauce. Egg drop soup was fair. My husband up graded to wonton soup. Absolutely horrendous. The only thing this place offers is disappointment and frustration. Sat in the restaurant for an entire hour and got 2 out of 4 dishes we ordered. Our rice was cold and stale by the time our second dish came (at the 40 minute mark). When the server finally remembered us after an entire hour, she asked if we were missing any dishes and then proceeded to tell us that one of the dishes we ordered was sold out... after AN HOUR of us sitting there waiting. They're offering incentives for good reviews on different platforms, I would steer away from this place and take the good reviews with a grain of salt. read more

We visited Bamboo House around 6pm today after seeing so many great reviews online. I was actually excited and drove out specifically to try it. We don't remember the exact time we arrived, but we clearly remember checking our phone right after placing the order -- it was 6:20pm. We ordered three dishes: stir-fried beef with wild chili peppers, "Healthy" Lion's Head meatballs, and cold noodles. From 6:20, we waited. By 6:45, nothing had arrived, so I politely asked a waitress wearing glasses (she seemed like she might be the owner, but I'm not sure) whether our food was ready or at least being prepared. Her response was very rude. She said sharply, "We don't serve pre-made food. It takes time!" I explained that I wasn't rushing her -- I just wanted to know if our order was in progress. Close to 7pm, I asked another waitress for an update. She said there was only one chef working that night and that we would need to wait at least 45 minutes. I couldn't help but wonder why we weren't informed of this when we first arrived. After 7pm, the waitress with glasses came to tell us that the cold noodles were sold out. I asked if ordering something else would mean waiting another hour, and she said, "I don't know." I then asked whether our other two dishes were almost ready. Her answer again was, "I don't know." At 7:35pm -- over an hour after ordering -- one dish finally arrived. Ten minutes later, another waitress came to tell us that the third dish was also sold out. In total, we spent nearly two hours at the restaurant, and two people ended up sharing just one dish. The most disappointing part of the experience was the attitude of the waitress with glasses. I believe it's completely reasonable to ask about the status of our food after waiting that long. Not only was she dismissive and unhelpful, but at one point she even said, "Please stop asking me, okay?" That was shocking and very unprofessional. i really wanted to try their food but now having PTSD from her. read more

We had gone to this restaurant pretty regularly years ago. It was good at that t. Since then we tried different Chinese place, finally end up at Starhouse, just down the road (They are now retired) So when I wanted Chinese I remembered Bamboo House. I saw some good reviews so I got take out order and when I got home, disappointed doesn't really say how bad it was. All the food was bland, no amount of soy sauce could make taste ok. The "Sauce" was just watery and bland. The chicken wings fried shrimp were hard,dry and tough. The coatings were Cruncy not crispy. (Fried too long). The BBQ pork seemed steamed not roasted and had a chemical after taste. The noodles were good! Not sure if it was the cook or they just changed over the years, but I will not take the gamble. Unassuming exterior, beautiful old school Chinese restaurant hiding inside. Full works for sides and drinks, I recommend the hot tea. I've been going here for years and unfortunately in the past 2 years or so, they've gone downhill in terms of service, quality, and wait times for in person dining and to-go orders. Their communication is especially disappointing; this is the second time that I call an order in just to be told at pick up that they aren't serving what I ordered, and if I wanted something else instead. If they called and gave me a heads up that they're out of certain ingredients or something, it would have been more acceptable. Disappointed and ended up not ordering anything else, and got a stink face with an "OK" and walked off. Mature woman, maybe the owner? Not sure but is really curt over the phone and in person. The wait times in restaurant would also be more acceptable if they told you ahead of time that they're really busy and food is taking a little longer. At least this way you know what to expect. Definitely not doing the place any favors. To the owners: get it together. You're losing customers and will continue if changes aren't made. read more

First off the egg drop soup was this weird vegetable soup with zero egg...zero! It did not even resemble egg drop soup. When my wife tried to return it because it did not taste good at all our server rebutted "but you ate some...it is good". So much for customer service. Also I tried their mapo tofu. I guess I ignored the warning sign which was that there was no chili sign on the menu denoting spicy dish. What I got was this brown (not red),bland (not spicy) mockery of a mapo tofu with not even a hint of sichuan pepper. Basically tofu rolled in some lazy oyster sauce. Not going back. This place is decent but very different compared to royal mandarin and golden chopsticks in National City. My friends and I tried the beef lo-mein, braised tofu with vegetables, and honey beef with a side of white rice. The portions were pretty big and enough to feed 6-7 people family style without having leftovers. The service was good and seemed like a mom and pop type of restaurant. When I went to use the restroom, I saw that one of them was for women only! The problem with this is if the "everyone" restroom is occupied and a man (or boy) has a nature call, he's just SOL. But not if you're a woman. I have seen this same messed up arrangement at other restaurants. Started dining here several decades ago but haven't visited for at least a year or two. So, a friend and I agreed to drop in for lunch. Don't know what these establishments have against their male patrons, but I have NO tolerance for such blatant needless gender discrimination! Would YOU patronize a business that had two restrooms, one labeled "everyone", the other labeled "whites"? That's what I thought. Only difference is race instead of gender. read more
