We were looking to have hot soup and found Pho Saigon Express on the way home. We arrived before closing, but the staff was nice enough to accommodate us. The staff were great, especially the lady at the cashier counter area who was wearing a pink dress. She was personable and quite welcoming. We ordered our usual pho with fatty and lean brisket along with tendons. Although we only opted for the smaller bowls, we were surprised to see how packed the noodles and meat were in these bowls. When you go in, you'll see a sign that says to grab your menus and find anywhere to sit. I'm assuming that's only when they're not busy. Priscilla, based from the other reviews, the owner, greeted us and took our order. Very patient with my hubby as he's picky and takes awhile to decide. When my hubby asked about their spice level, Priscilla assured him that they will get his order right if the spice level wasn't up to his liking. Our food were delicious and big portions as well. I love my Yellow Curry Coconut Soup with Pork. I usually have a hard time finding Thai places that can give me Yellow Curry in a zero spice level. When I took the leftovers home, my daughter who is as picky as my husband ate and enjoyed my meal. The workers were great and it's neat to see how they all work together. Priscilla essentially was the host, waitress, and cashier. I can tell that she's loved by her patrons because their conversations. This family restaurant has been operating for 20 years! It's a stand alone building with plenty of parking. Their menu ranges widely in Vietnamese, Chinese and Thai food. It's somewhere you want to go when you want a quick fix in Pho or Asian cuisine with affordable pricing. When you walk in, there's a sign that said "Grab a menu, seat yourself". We ordered pho, broken rice dish with bbq chicken/pork/shrimp, and spam spring rolls. The pho broth was too salty for our liking but squeezing lots of lime neutralized it. Came with lots of meat. Surprised to see broken rice dish on the menu in an area like this because most restaurants don't sell enough and end up wasting. But this place keeps it simple with only one choice. The bbq chicken and pork slices were thin and flavorful with 3 shrimps. I would have preferred more charred grill marks. Appreciate that the egg loaf was fresh and moist. My husband got the pho with the rare steak. The broth on that is also delicious. The portions are awesome. I am not one to write negative reviews, but today I was severely disappointed by a restaurant for the first time in a long time. What you can expect: mediocre, overpriced food. A few greasy, poor quality chicken wings will set you back $19. You can get better quality chow fun elsewhere for a more reasonable price. The wonton soup (also nearly $20) was awful, the noodles were instant ramen quality (I think they were literally instant ramen noodles), the wontons were flavorless and the broth was under seasoned. It's obvious that this establishment takes shortcuts wherever it can. If you want to get what you're paying for, this isn't your place ! My biggest complaint: every plate we were given was visibly dirty. I found a smear of wet food on a dish (not a stain!) which I could wipe off with my finger. I could find leftover food debris on every single dish. I would have left at this point if the people I was with weren't insistent on staying. We complained to the woman who seemed to be running the place and she would not acknowledge the filthy plates even a bit, acting a bit passive aggressive when I asked for a new one, then proceeded to bring us new plates which were also dirty! My friend and I were craving some hot soup on a Thursday night after our friend's wedding in the area and I found that this is the only place that opens until a bit later.. Everything in the area was closed at 9pm. We came in around 915pm and the nice lady up front said the kitchen was closing and if we can put in our orders. So we put in our orders before we sat down. After us, at least 3 more parties trickled in and it was definitely around 930pm or so, but they were so nice and still took orders from the late comers. The place was pretty clean and the broth of the pho was surprisingly decent. I only say that because we were in San Marcos, which doesn't have a lot of Asian food let alone pho, and, it was pretty late at night on a weeknight and it was near closing time. Flavor of the pho was still very decent and rich and not fattening at all. Usually at a lot of soup places, toward closing time if they are running out of broth they would have to improvise and sometimes that would compromise the flavor (too diluted or too salty) but this tasted perfectly great, as if they still had a nice full pot of pho broth. They also gave plenty of meat for the bowl. We were too hungry and I forgot to take a photo of my bowl when it first came out but everything was good. We got the combination option. There is plenty of parking and the restaurant seems to be large enough to handle a decent crowd. It was 12:30 and there must have been 25 people in the restaurant. Service is excellent as water was brought, orders taken and food started coming out a few moments after our order. We being creatures of habit order Shrimp Spring Rolls and large bowls of Chicken Pho. Spring Rolls came out with Peanut Sauce and we both thought the sauce was delicious. The Spring Rolls were in need of a tighter swaddle as they started to come apart as we dipped. Good nonetheless, we are warriors so we prevailed. Next came the Chicken Pho. OMG Becky, that soup was awesome. I kid you not! That was some of the best broth we have had since moving back to Southern California in 2022. The Pho had mounds of chicken and a truckload of noodles. It might have just qualified for the Mount Rushmore of Pho's. Price was on point with other places with the Spring Rolls ringing the register at 10.99 and large chicken pho at 15.99. This visit earned an easy 5 stars and a return visit in the future.
