I lived in Japan for 2 years and this is the best sushi I've had since I moved back to the states!

I absolutely love Bamboo sushi. It is amazing to have a place I know I can bring my friends/family with celiac, and not have to worry! The green machine is always a crowd favorite, but the sauce is a little sweet for me. That being said, most of those I know put the Green machine in their top two! I usually go for my tried and true Rivers and Streams! It is a delicious, savory focus that is simple and balanced. Their miso soup is not to be missed--it is very well balanced. So far the only menu item I've tried that I haven't absolutely loved in their crispy tofu, but their crispy rice started is phenomenal. I will always be coming back for the great service, relaxing atmosphere, and consistently delicious food. It has been my go to since I got to Portland! read more

Not a place for quality sushi. It's a private equity owned brutally Americanized sushi slop, the nigiri was soaked in lemon juice, you can't taste the fish, and the rolls are enormous and packed full of all sorts of ingredients, start simple, be good at simple and then work your way up to all that nonsense, they're trying to do too much. It's not sushi. Vibe is fine, I bet their burger is good, but that tells you all you need to know about their sushi. read more

Upscale sushi and Japanese fare. We honestly got so much that I can't even remember what all we had, but it was many many many raw fishies. Very good food and service. Really tasted fresh. Interior is open and very clean/nice looking. Good people watching at the window seats. read more

Came here for my cousin's birthday dinner, it was her first time and she was super excited to try the crispy rice. We came after the Xmas bonanza week and they were out of a few things we wanted to try. Even though they were minor bummers, the person helping us was extremely apologetic and provided great service. We probably ordered too much, because the table felt really small. All of the dishes were beautifully presented and they were all delicious. The ambiance itself was semi dark, there was a lot of hustle and bustle, but still quiet enough you can have a conversation. Spicy edamame - Feisty edamame. Why eat boring edamame with you can have some spice with it! Spicy salmon tartare - tempura nori that was fried like a chip, topped with salmon tartare on one side and avocado/cilantro crema on the other. I had to mix it together before eating it, the avo/cilantro side was too rich on its own. 7 spiced calamari - Out :( Ceviche + taro chips - Out of taro chips, we were offered rice instead of chips so we cancelled the order. Chicken Karaage - Fried chicken, no complaints. Fresh wasabi - Out, but my we got to sample a little nugget of it. Spicy tuna crispy rice - YUMMMMMM. We almost ordered this one and the salmon one. Luckily we didn't because an order has 6 pieces. Crispy flavor bomb though, do it. Steak tataki - yum. I remembered liking it, but it wasn't out of this world. Chopped salad - I missed the part it has iceberg lettuce. I was disappointed. In a world of romaine or any other leafy green, why does iceberg lettuce exist on a menu?! Never again. The unicorn - DELICIOUS. This has spicy crab, shrimp tempura, albacore, avocado, jalapeno dressing, gochugaru oil, micro cilantro. So flavorful. Rainbow - Yum. Good classic roll. Haupia pie - out Black sesame brownie - out Ginger pot de creme - I wasn't a fan.. it was chewy mush. The charred orange segment was bland/tasteless. It didn't have the citrus tang the dessert needed. Crystalized ginger was chewy as expected, macadamia nuts are pretty soft as far as nuts go, and the creme. I felt like a different nut would have added better texture. So disappointed our choice desserts were out. We got this as a birthday dessert, so we appreciated that! Overall we had a nice birthday dinner and will likely be back for some of those stand out items we had and try some of the ones we didn't get to! read more

Mediocre sushi/ fish plates. Our waitress was nice but was so forgetful. It made us a bit concerned since we had a shellfish allergy (shrimp, oyster, etc.) we ordered a salmon poke and she gave us tuna... but the food took a while and we were hungry. We ordered more food since the plates were small and asked if we were going to get our chicken skewers from the first order. After we got the second order we asked again for the chicken skewers and she said we never ordered them lol. It wasn't very good just tasted like propane and no flavor. The ceviche was ok- more avocado than fish. The poke had too big of onion chunks. The taro chips were good but too crumbly not able to use like a tostada. read more

Delicious food. Truly, such impeccable quality and unique menu. Garden of Eden was our favorite roll. King salmon nigiri was incredible too. Miso soup is fantastic, too. We sat at the bar and Ray was our bartender. He took really great care of us by recommending their top menu items and crafting some of the best cocktails we've ever had. Have eaten dinner here twice while working in Portland the last few months and have been very happy with the sushi here. Rivers and Streams has been our favorite, and especially so if you're a salmon lover. Have also tried the Green Machine with salmon, Rainbow Roll, the Salmon Flight, and Chicken Karaage. All good, as well. For dessert, I tried the Haupia Pie, which wasn't my favorite. Not a big fan of coconut and there's a lot of that in there. My fault for not asking or being aware of that. A friend had the Black Sesame Brownie and liked that. A good place for good sushi. read more

Very cute and intimate setting. The hostess and waitress were the sweetest. They do not take reservations at this location. I was told the wait time would be 30 min and it needed up only being about 10!! The crispy rice is always a mush have. I had the spicy tuna. I ordered the tempura cauliflower, however they forgot to bring it out so I'll try it next time. The fried rice was not my favorite and lacked a bit of flavor. The sushi was also amazing. I love bamboo! Their fish is always fresh and they have the best spicy tuna crispy rice around. Service was beyond fun and I wish our remembered our waiters name, but he was so genuine and friendly! Definitely recommend coming here, but they get packed so keep that in mind. read more

Walk in and it is a simple setup. Nothing too fancy. The service was great, but that is about the best of it. The food was ok, nothing to write home about. The most pretentious, sorry excuse for sushi. Came here on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 1PM PST. First off the waiter, who I think was also the bartender, took quite a bit of time to take our order. We had to flag down the host to get our waiter's attention. They waiter kept touting that it was a gluten free place, to which I immediately asked if they had soy sauce instead of tamari (tamari can be way too salty), and they said no. That's fair, they cater to gluten dietary restrictions. But it was just said so pretentiously. Why was that necessary? The spicy salmon crispy rice was not good. The salmon was overmixed which made it hard. The rice was crispy enough. The Agadeshi tofu was just ok. Tofu blocks were way too big, smaller but more of them would have been better so you didn't have to redip into the sauce. We did like the salmon flight, for which we opted to add the salmon king belly. The toppings made it different and kind of good. But not the best I've had. The oysters took the longest to come out for some reason. When I asked the host (who had to help us again, had already asked the waiter 5-10 mins prior about the oysters), he felt a little snarky. I know I'm coming off very particular in this review, but if you read my other reviews I am usually very fair and forgiving. The host said "yes they take a while, they are hand-shucked." When I order oysters from other resaturants, they come out within 10-15 minutes of ordering them, and I'm pretty sure those aren't "machine-shucked" lol. And to top it off, the oysters here are Bamboo had so much shell flakes in them. And the sauce overpowered the oyster. So we waited 30 minutes for poorly shucked oysters? For the price, I wouldn't recommend this place. Steer clear. read more

Bamboo is always a classic! This is their best location in terms of service, even though there can be a bit of a wait and it can get busy, I'd recommend a reservation if you want to sit at a regular table rather than a high top or at the bar (this goes for all Bamboo locations). The fish is always quality and the prices are pretty standard as far as sushi goes. The Setto curated experience is plenty for two people and a good assortment. Definitely try a crispy rice item, it's my personal favorite, even though their spicy tuna option that comes with the Setto is quite spicy. The Green Machine (add tuna or salmon, we added tuna) is a personal favorite, but it can also be vegetarian. The sunset roll could have done with a bit less spicy aioli in my opinion. The menu has tons of options so it can be overwhelming, which is why we went with the Setto experience, but I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of their menu items. Definitely recommend this location over the NW location where I've had some unpleasant service or the downtown location that can get really super busy and have difficulty parking. The Beaverton location is another great option and has the easiest parking generally. All locations seem to get busy around dinner time and your best bet for a quick seat is with a reservation. read more

Overall, we would go again, but this place leaves a lot to be desired in terms of service and overall ambiance of the restaurant. The service was unbelievably slow, with us wondering many times where our server was and having to flag them down. We opted to place our entire order at once, in hopes it would help minimize our need to interact with the server or wait for her. The sushi was... interesting. Honestly, I was surprised there were not traditional nigiri's of just fish + rice. Instead each piece had some chef curated flavors added. Half of them were amazing, the other half left a lot to be desired. This Bamboo Sushi was a fantastic buffer as we had to wait 45 minutes for a table literally next door. Similar to another Bamboo S. my daughter took us to back in Sept '23, the modern style continues with a fresh energy. Our two cocktails looked real nice on paper and also when we got them- but the alcohol situation was nearly nil. Regardless, what took this moment to the next level was the deep fried Cauliflower kissed so gently with like teriyaki and cashews sprinkled on top. read more

Bamboo Sushi is an ideal spot for vegans, offering delicious choices like the green machine with yuzu sauce and the veggie island roll that can't be found anywhere else. The avocado crispy rice reminds me of Nobu because of its crunchy texture and creaminess flavor with a hint of truffle oil. The Korean cauliflower is my favorite because the sweet thick sauce is addicting but it also differs from the tofu plate. The crispy tofu sauce was more salty, and definitely needs to be eaten with a side of rice, but I do like how it's not crunchy but still soft and not over fried and drenched in oil. The intimate, dark ambiance is perfect for sharing small plates, and the Ume blossom cocktail is my favorite because it's tequila based and has a refreshing citrus flavor. The servers are attentive and provide honest recommendations for an enjoyable dining experience. Make sure to treat your favorite vegan here, but there are also fresh quality seafood for non-vegans and pescatarians. read more

I've had bamboo prior to covid and wasn't a huge fan honestly. Moving on to the present time, I dined with a couple of my girl friends and the sushi was pretty good! I'm not huge on having a lot of sauce on my rolls or sushi in general and prefer nigiri, but the sauces on these rolls weren't too overwhelming. We got the sunset roll, Friday the 13th, crispy rice spicy tuna, salmon nigiri with yuzu, and spicy scallop nigiri. Out of all the sushi, the spicy scallop was the best! It was so well flavored and soft like butter. Our server was great, but I found it weird that we had to ask for wasabi after receiving 3 rolls and ask for water even though we left it on the side of the table empty. They were super kind but I feel like they could have been more attentive. Parking is typical in the area the restaurant is in -- street parking. It's also next door to Ken's pizza so expect to spend time finding parking! read more

We came in around 8pm on a Saturday night and were able to grab a table for two shortly, though I recommend reservations for large groups, as the place was fairly packed! My husband mentioned his celiac disease and the waiter didn't need any more prompting to assist us. He immediately mentioned the three or four things on the menu (which were labeled) that contained gluten, but also mentioned that the deep fryer was gluten-free so tempura and karage were available as safe options.We usually have to ask about deep-fried stuff, so we were impressed the waiter answered our question without us needing to ask. Additionally, all their "soy sauce" is tamari, which is such an inclusive move I love to see restaurants make in order to make most of their dishes gluten-free. The menu is very large and I was able to easily find some vegan options for myself as well. There was some delay on our waiter's end and he took several minutes to come back to us after jotting our edamame appetizer order and leaving us to look at the menu for our other options. However, the bartender noticed we were ready to order and stopped what he was doing to take our order. After the order was submitted, the food came our very quickly! As far as the food itself, the marinated shiitake roll was underwhelming for me, but I'm willing to give the restaurant the benefit of the doubt, as everything else we ordered was great. We spent $41 (minus tip) on two sushi places and two shared appetizers, which was a great value! Bonus- they also source MSC and ASC certified sustainable seafood! We will definitely be back! Note that parking is pretty limited and reservations for weekend nights are great if you can plan ahead. read more

While I haven't been to all of the Bamboo Sushi locations in Portland, I've been to quite a few and I can easily say that this is the best location (and also the original location!). The inside of the restaurant is a bit smaller in comparison to other locations, but it's cozy and just as beautiful. I sat at the bar when I dined and the bartender was a delight to talk to, was amazing at his craft, and put an immense amount of attention to the details of the drinks. I only ordered a Friday the 13th roll as I just wanted a quick bite and it was great. The quality was better than some of the other locations I've been to and the flavors of the roll burst in my mouth without overwhelming the salmon. I would love to come back again to try their other rolls (specifically the green machine as it's reportedly their most popular roll "by far"). read more

We aren't taking anyone else tonight". No sorry, no nothing, just talking about us in third person as if we aren't standing right there hearing the whole thing. Didn't even look at us. Have you ever just been talked about while you're standing right there? Not to mention that same person walked by us numerous times while we were waiting and couldn't tell us then. I get it, you're busy, it's 7:20, you don't want anymore walk in's, fine, but would a simple acknowledgment hurt? Bamboo Sushi. The name is popular in many states and cities, yet I was bamboozled. Here's a story as to why. I came on a weekday to beat the rush. I ordered a spicy tuna roll, Friday the 13th, and Bamboo dragon. There were a few errors beginning with the rice. It was way too dry and mushy. It felt like leftover rice, which is great for fried rice, but not for sushi rolls. Furthermore, the quality of the fish was just okay. Unfortunately, the taste of each roll was memorably unmemorable. Lastly, the price tag is too high for the experience and food. I was saddened by this experience. Another Saturday means another sushi date at Bamboo Sushi, this time at their Kerns location! I feel like each location of Bamboo has a distinct aesthetic and vibe, with this one being slightly more upscale and great for a date! My fiancé and I ordered two different versions of crispy rice - the tuna and the albacore, and a green machine. I got the little ume drink and he got the sucker punch. Our server was Royce and he and all of the other wait staff were excellent and kept on checking in on us! We arrived at 4:45 for my adult daughter's fifth year in a row to celebrate her birthday. We are open to getting whatever she wants and we are easy going customers. First server got us started but forgot the spicy aioli we asked for. A second server eventually brought us out first set of dishes but original server forgot our aioli. So we asked the new server, who went to get it and just as she brought it over, she asked us if we had asked someone else and seemed irritated. Which we thought, hmmmm, okay, we aren't at fault here, we just wanted the aioli. Then, a few more blunders and the final one was server two brought out the birthday dessert with a candle burning and sat it down in the middle of the table while the known birthday girl was away from the table. Hmmmm, so strange. And this oversight and overlooking us was done while the dining room was absolutely empty. The staff leaned on the bar quite a bit and talked amongst themselves. We brought our empty soda glass to the bar and asked for the refill which our server never refilled even though we had politely asked. Again, dining room was empty and staff was standing and chatting at the bar while we waited for the sauce we ordered and the soda refill we requested. Sorry Bamboo Sushi. I hope you all make it in these tough economic times. Poor service will not earn you any points. We will likely be back, we are long time and frequent customers, we like the food but hoping you all can bring your service back to an acceptable level. The sushi here is great the place is quiet and clean while the service is good with average wait time for food preparation. The kitchen is visible from the front so have the option to sit at the bar or have a front row seat to watch your food being prepared before they serve you. They have some art pieces in their main rooms of origami. They would be a litter more pleasant to look at if they had more than just one type of origami folded into the art but that's just what I felt.
