This is an order at the bar, served to you kind of restaurant. Came with a large group and there was some confusion due to mixing up of orders, but all in all ended up being some free extra bowls of food. I tried the number 22, the tofu khao soi. Good amount of tofu to noodle ratio! The noodles were egg noodles with a nice bouncy texture. The tofu was soft, but didn't soak up the sauce very well. The broth itself was ok but was not has flavorful/did not have the umami flavor that khao soi does.
So many restaurants reviewed, this is a Top 5 overall in Portland. I appreciate the variety of sides that accompany each dish. While the 1.2 is the most expensive entree, I much prefer the braised pork over rice (#4): the broth served in the ramekin is so delish. Ordering and access to condiments is very efficient and orderly. Turnaround is relatively fast. Rum cocktail was plenty and decent. Where they missed was in their one dessert offering: a milk tea type of cake. Pass on that. Service is polite and semi-friendly.
I really enjoyed my pad se ew as I was looking for a quick and easy meal to take back to my hotel. Sometimes I'm getting Thai food. It is a hit and miss and at times might not have noodle dishes. The noodles were nice and soft and had exactly the veggies that I wanted in my dish. The staff is just very straight to the point take your order and present your food at the window. I love that the restaurant was very conveniently right next to a hotel in downtown. You can eat your food at the tables that are conveniently outside of the pick up window and people watch as they pass by downtown. Pretty good overall.
Disappointing experience eating here. The menu is extremely misleading. Beware that 2 of the 4 "meatless" items CONTAIN PORK. This is FALSE ADVERTISEMENT and completely wrong. I understand they do not say "vegan" as the other two items do, but they are definitely not "meatless". I originally wanted to order the #20 Ba-Mhee Tofu. I asked the employee if the bone broth was made from pork, and he said yes. I then proceeded to order the #22 Tofu Curry Noodle. He did not think to tell me that this item was also made of pork. Unfortunately, I knew the moment I took a bite that this was pork broth. Not only this, but the broth was overly sweet compared to any other khao soi I've had in my life. The egg noodles were all stuck together. I did enjoy the tofu, they were firmer in texture. My friend ordered the the tom yum and said it also didn't taste like tom yum, and she has been to Thailand before. We both liked the Thai tea, it wasn't too sweet and only $3. They give the side spices/peppers without you having to ask. There is a clean bathroom for customers. You are expected to bus your own table. Would not recommend.
friendly/quick service as well as waittime. for a place w such high ratings and recommendation, unfortunately i cant say i enjoyed it as much as i wanted. i got the khao moo deng and my friend got the ba mhee noodles. the latter was solid and what you would expect from egg noodles. i cant complain abt that dish however the khao moo deng was much too sweet for me to enjoy. ive eaten chinese and viet prepared red barbecue pork, similar to Moo Daeng, before but this... was too sauced up of a rice plate for me; i found myself scraping off the sauce to the side. my plate also only had one half of a boiled egg, where my other half? and the broth on the side was also quite salty. however i pork belly was good tho. perhaps im not the target audience for this comfort food
I am so sad that I am from out of town so I won't be able to eat Khao Moo Dang again. The 7.2 Ba-Mhee Tom-Yum Naam was the star of our meal. Soup was very flavorful and had a small spicy kick (beware if you can't handle spice). The 8. House Curry Noodle was also good but not our favorite since it was too sweet forward for our liking. It was the best khao soi we've ever had though. The crispy pork belly topping that is included in both items was the best crispy pork belly we've had from Thai restaurant. It looks like it can be dry but it's actually soft moist flavorful and freshly crispy. Other places they make it too dry or too hard, or the skin is stale/hard. Lastly $3 Cha-Yen you can't beat the value of this. It actually had such good tea flavor and not overly sweet or weak like a lot of other restaurants. We liked it so much we bought more to go to enjoy during the rest of our trip.
Great food, chill vibes, can't ask for much more. Just a nice order ahead and sit down with your food spot. Flavorful dishes and they come out surprisingly fast. You get great value for your money too. The saucy pictured dish is the Khao Moo Dang Pi-Set for $18, very filling because you get the extras with a whole boiled egg, dumplings, and yu choy. I was starving after a workout and was pretty full after eating this. My wife got the Ba-Mhee Tom-Yum which had great flavor with a good kick, my wife can't handle spice well and struggled a bit but it was perfect to me. Egg noodles were perfect and not soggy. Biggest surprise of these dishes was the crispy pork belly that remained crispy despite being in sauce or broth. I would come back for sure for a solid delicious meal.
Wow I can see why the line was out the door, this place was PACKED! You order first before finding a spot to seat. Came with a group of friends and we loved everything. Love coming on a group so we could try everyone's dishes from the noodle soups and rice dishes. I ordered the #12 Ba Mee Tom Kha. Perfect for a chilly day. Pork belly so crispy and good. Definitely not your basic Thai food. Everything was packed with flavor.

11, 12 and 19 - I kept repeating it as I stood in line for what we were going to order. Loved the whole set up of this place. Small and cozy but always a table available for you. Food came out super quick and was so delicious. 11- ba mhee moo-ab haang- sold at the 12 hour braised pork line in the description. 12- Tom kha- one of the best I've ever had 19- steamed pork dumplings- incredible and super flavorful Can't recommend this place enough!
Worth more than the hype. Khao Moo Dang is all that and more. Delicious egg noodles bursting with flavor. I loved the 11 with chili crisp. The side of bone broth is so good. The dry noodle option is excellent. This spot is counter service and often popping at dinner time. We came at lunch and sat immediately with food served quickly. I can't recommend this restaurant enough.
TL;DR Cheaper eats and gourmet deliciousness My wife and I wanted to try one of the restaurants that made the yelps top 100 nation list. And this honestly did not disappoint. Again I preface that I tend to be more generous towards local businesses when it comes to ratings on yelp due to our ever in reading reliance on the yelp, open table or google review on a restaurant, bar or social area. Believe me when I say this is a place in Portland you don't want to miss, I appreciated the vibes and the rnb and hip hop vibes the bar was bringing. But you aren't here to read this for the vibes, you're here to read this for the food. My wife had a delicious Thai curry and I have a delicious rice plate with the most crispiest of pork, complementary sausage and flavorful sauce. I tasted my wife's dish which was equally umami filled and delicious and it was TOFU which I am not a fan of normally. Anyway before this review gets too long, go ahead and enjoy these photos of the good food we experienced and know it is worth your time.
We have never had Thai soup noodles before outside of khao soi. Despite having to eat outside in the rain because their restaurant was under renovation, and having to deal with the homelessness in Portland our food was amazing. Negatives: -restaurant was under renovation so we had to eat outside. There was a patio covering for the outdoor dining. However, that did not prevent the homelessness from coming up to the patio, opening the door and asking us for money. We were visiting from LA though, so it's wasn't that awful. In LA it smells like pee too I understand their situation, the only people we can truly blame are the city and the people in charge Positives: -i got the house wonton and it was amazing. Despite having to eat in a Togo box, I didn't care. It still tasted amazing. My wife had the tom yum noodles and it was amazing for her too. We have had tom yum before, but the flavor this soup had took it to a different level. -prices were reasonable Overall 5/5 I can't blame the restaurant for the negative experience we had due to external factors. This is my FAVORITE place to eat in Portland, no cap, this is an industry city and I've yet to find somewhere that I like more! The food is consistently very good, it comes out fast, and the staff is always super chill and nice. Everything here is delicious, if you love Thai cuisine, trying to find somewhere in Portland might be overwhelming with all the amazing options, but look no further than Khao Moo Dang! read more

Quick and friendly service! I love going to small hole-in-the-wall restaurants and while not quite a hole in the wall, this small and busy restaurant gave me similar vibes! Ordered at the counter and was able to grab one of the last seats available. I ordered the Khao Moo Dang and it was delicious! The sauce was very rich with flavor and the pork belly was very crispy. The dish was very filling with many diverse flavors and I was not disappointed in my choice at all. Excited to come back again in the near future! read more

Thai street food with strong Chinese roots. Everything we had was authentic and flavorful, and the portions were generous to match. The semi self-service setup keeps it accessible and unpretentious. Visiting from the East Coast as a tourist, I'd call this a must-try. read more
Khao Moo Dang is an authentic Thai-Chinese eatery known for their delicious comfort food. This spot is located in the Hawthorne neighborhood where there is a good amount of street parking. Inside, they have cozy setup with seats indoors and outdoors at their patio. For their menu, they have a solid selection of dishes to choose from. Wifey and I ended up getting the Ba-Mhee Pi-Set (Dry) and a Lychee Hibiscus Juice to share. We really enjoyed the authentic and comforting flavors. This used to be my go to DoorDash order after a long day at work, so I was excited to finally dine in - and it did not disappoint! I always order the rice combo platter with minced pork and Chinese sausage, it also comes with a lot of rice and egg and bbq pork - then add the crispy pork belly for that crunch! The runny egg yolk and spicy minced pork tie everything together into one incredibly savory, comfort meal. I paired it with a side of soup and a drink, which was so satisfying! This time we sat outside, and it was the perfect spot, as it was a beautiful sunny day - we were able to people watch just off Hawthorne Boulevard. They also have indoor seating if you prefer. The food comes out fairly quickly and you bust your own tables when done. If you're looking for a hearty, homie meal that's packed with flavor and gives you plenty for your money, that you will have plenty of leftovers to share, this is the place! read more
This was probs the most authentic Thai food I have been able to find in the states! I got the 1.2 and it was so delicious and also extremely filling. The rice was perfectly cooked, the sausages have great flavor and it wasn't too salty either. The broth on the side was also a nice complementary thing to sip on. The 1.2 wasn't spicy, so you can add chili oil if you want that. The service was pretty quick, especially because the space was packed! Overall ambiance of the space was clean but not fancy at all. Seating was a bit hard, but that's bc the slave is small and the restaurant was popular. Honestly that's a good problem to have. If you're in Portland, definitely stop here for some comforting Thai dishes. read more

Khao Moo Dang is a staple Thai restaurant for me that I keep coming back too. My only complaint is that they need a bigger location to accommodate for their popularity, as it can get pretty crammed with people. They have a moderately sized menu with pretty reasonable prices. The food comes out fast and they have condiments you can add to any dish to elevate the spice level. My favorite is the tofu curry noodle. The egg noodles are satisfying to eat with the perfect chew, the tofu has a nice spongey texture, and the curry broth is comforting, creamy, and aromatic. I have also tried the Ba-mhee tom yum soup and the signature khao moo dang dish, which were both amazing. read more
The food here is delicious! Tasty colorful bold favored dishes, house made dumplings, and house made sauces and seasonings. They offer dry noodle and broth noodle dishes (and more). We ordered the #12 (coconut based broth, spice level 2 IMO) and #7.2 (w broth spice level 4) and house made dumplings and two beers. They have indoor seating, and outdoor covered seating. The indoor seating can be a little busy, so if you go with 4 or more during the busy time (dinner) might have to wait for a bigger table. The establishment was clean and had trinket decor and history to admire. The service was fast and they were very nice! I think this little business is a staple. Located in the trendy Hawthorne area of Portland, we decided to visit the restaurant after reading its raving reviews on Yelp. There were people lining up at the entrance even though it was past 2PM. Inside, with its casual décor, was quite cozy with seating for 25 guests max. They added side yard and curb areas that could accommodate 30 more. A side note: The seating is assigned after you have placed your order at the counter. After browsing through its overhead menu, we ordered the following dishes: Dumpling Soup Noodle with House Bone Broth (with Egg, Sweet Sausage, and Pork Belly Add-Ons): The lightly fatty broth was pleasantly flavorful. The thin egg noodles were cooked to perfection. The sliced pork loin pieces were tender, the pork belly cuts were juicy with crispy skin. Then there were savory dumplings, sweet sausage, egg, and the party kept going. Kha Moon Dang Pi Set: The sauce was savory and a tad sweet. The rice was nicely cooked with slightly soft texture. The add-ons in the dumpling soup noodle were included in this set: tender sliced pork loins, pork belly with crispy skin, sweet sausage, dumplings, eggs and veggies. It also came with a side bowl of bone broth soup. Ba Mhee Pi Set (Dry Version): This was a quite exquisite dish. It had all the add-ons and thin egg noodles from Dumpling Noodle Soup but with sauce from Kha Moon Dang. The broth-less noodles were nicely al dente, and the ingredients went very well with the savory and sweet sauce. A side bowl of broth soup was included. Khao Haang (Dry Version): The beautifully fried garlic bits and soy based sauce provided lovely seasoning and flavor. In addition, toppings such as pork belly, sweet sausage, and pork loin added superb dimensions to this dish. A side bowl of broth soup was included. Delicious Thai food! This restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside. It's a small little place with limited seating which has been enhanced with a covered outdoor seating area out front. There's a line of people waiting to order, showing it's popular. I ordered #1.1 (KHAO MOO DANG), figuring something with the same name as the restaurant is probably their signature dish. Food arrived in short time. After my first bite I was in awe. This was absolutely amazing in quality and taste. The pork belly (on the left side of my plate) was crispy and delicious. Everything else was equally as delicious. I didn't see Pad Thai on the menu, but I don't care. I could eat #1.1 every day for the rest of my life and be happy about it. read more

Visited this restaurant a couple of times now and it continues to exceed my expectations. The house curry noodle bowl is my absolute favorite, packed with flavor and just tastes amazing. Words cannot begin to describe the crispy pork belly here. Cooked to perfection. My gf's go-to is the Tom Yum soup bowl, so definitely try that one out too. Ba-Mhee Moo Tun is also an excellent choice. Be prepared for the sweetness of Khao Moo Dang rice plate though, as it is still too sweet for my liking. Another thing to note is that it can get really crowded and they don't allow seating before placing an order. While the indoor dining area is small, they have an extended patio seating (with wind protector film and roof) and a couple of tables directly outside their side door. On a cold, rainy Portland day, a hot bowl of soup is much needed! My friends and I came for a late lunch on Saturday and luckily there were tables available. We ordered at the counter and sat down. The food came within 10 minutes. I got the ba-mhee with soup and my friends got the tom yum. The broth for both were so flavorful! I added some chili oil from the condiments on the table. Be warned, add a little to start because it can get spicy. Pork was tender, wontons were stuffed, and surprisingly the crispy pork stayed crispy even after soaking in the broth. This was my 2nd time here after visiting several years ago and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the KHAO MOO DANG PI-SET and the HOUSE CURRY NOODLE. - Both had almost the same toppings - Crispy pork belly was cooked perfectly - Good portion size - Healthy amount of protein toppings and choy veggies too - The curry broth was so flavorful - The dry noodles came with a side of broth which is always welcomed with dry noodle dishes Areas for Improvement - Dumplings were the weakest part of the dish - they were flat and pretty small - I wish the egg was soft boiled instead Things to keep in mind - The sauce for the dry noodles was simple - definitely recommend adding chili oil and other condiments to add some more complexity to the flavor - Limited street parking and limited seating - I actually prefer sitting in the alley since it gives street food vibes and more ventilation, so your clothes don't stink. There are heaters out there too so it's ok even during the winter but would still recommend wearing a jacket - They can get pretty busy but wait times were very reasonable I think any of their egg noodle (dry or with broth) dishes with pork belly are the ones to get. Having tried a similar Thai ba mee noodle place in Seattle, Khao Moo Dang has much better flavor. Prices has been creeping up just like everything else. Khao Moo Dang is one of those spots that I think is worth trying, even if it didn't completely win me over on my first visit. I ordered the original Khao Moo Dang rice dish, and while it was good, it didn't quite stand out as anything memorable to me. The Thai ice tea though was very tasty. The portion size is no joke, very generous to the point where I left extremely full (almost a little too full). If you're hungry, this place will definitely deliver. I do think I might have enjoyed it more if I had gone with a noodle dish, so I'd be interested in coming back and trying something different. The service was fast and efficient, and the food came out quickly. Parking was also pretty reasonable on a weekday, and there was no wait when I went. One thing to note is that the restaurant itself is quite small. I can easily see how the hype could make it feel crowded on weekends, so going during the week is probably your best bet. So, Khao Moo Dang is a solid spot with big portions while being pretty inexpensive, so worth checking out, especially if you're curious to try it for yourself. read more

You can't go wrong with anything here. My go to is the house curry noodle. It is so flavorful and the crispy pork belly is too good! You get a good amount of food for the price. The Lychee Hibiscus Juice is tasty! Staff is always kind. I never have an issue finding seating. You have to order at the counter first and then they give you a number and they will bring the food out to you. You also bus your own tables when you're done. They have inside seating, patio, and additional seating outside that is covered. It's a great place if you want a quick and quality meal! read more

Friends visiting from another state wanted to try this place because it's popular on TikTok. I've never been to a Thai restaurant with a menu like this. It's not a typical Thai spot since they don't serve dishes like Pad Thai and pineapple fried rice, etc. Street parking only in the neighborhood. The restaurant was busy, and we wanted to grab a table first while one person ordered for the group, but a staff member told us we couldn't sit until we ordered. I'm not sure about the other items, but #8 was pretty good. I originally considered getting #1 since it shares the restaurant's name, so I assumed it was their signature. But my friends said everyone on TikTok recommended #8 House Curry Noodle, so we all ordered the same thing. It had some heat but nothing overwhelming. Most people should be able to handle it. The spice level is probably not adjustable since nobody asked when we ordered. #8 was loaded with toppings, and the broth was rich and hearty, almost like Japanese ramen. Perfect for fall weather. The only thing that didn't impress me were the noodles. They tasted exactly like the Chinese dry egg noodles I buy at Asian markets. Nothing wrong with them, but I expected something different. Everything about the bowl felt new and exciting to me until I tasted the noodles, the same noodles I used to live on as a broke student. It was a bit of a letdown, as the noodles didn't quite fit in with the rest of the bowl. But that's just me. We also tried the Thai tea and lime tea. They're listed as sweetened but are much less sweet than Thai teas from other places. That's fine with me since I prefer less sweetness as I get older. I have friends who didn't enjoy their food here (including #1), but none of them tried #8. I'd come back to try more items from the menu and #8 again. read more

Exceptional Thai food to come try here in Portland. I heard all about this place when I got to the city and knew I had to try it. The night we showed up, it was really busy, yet we still managed to find a table after we ordered. The workers were nice enough to wipe it down and clean it up a little before we sat down. I ordered the khao moo dang as I was told it was one of their signature dishes to try. When I have Thai food, I do not usually go for a rice dish but this one was really calling my name and it did not disappoint. The assortment of meats that came with it was plentiful as was the portion of rice given. It was the perfect balance! Plus all of the spices and peppers on the table you could ask for was the real cherry on top. The service was fast even though it was busy on a Saturday night and all of the workers were all very friendly to us. The woman at the register was so cool and recommended us different dishes to try. Also, I really like this restaurant's system of having people bus their own tables. I have never seen that before at restaurant but it really impressed me. read more
My partner and I stopped by Khao Moo Dang recently and had such a good experience. I ordered the #9.3 dumpling soup in tom kha broth ($14) and it was comfort in a bowl. The broth was rich, creamy, tangy, and so fragrant -- seriously one of the best tom kha bases I've had. The dumplings were perfectly soft and packed with flavor. My partner went with the #11 Ba-Mhee Moo Ob Haang ($16), and it was delicious. The noodles had great texture, the seasoning was balanced, and the portion was generous. We also shared a side of crispy pork belly, and it was exactly what you want -- crunchy, fatty, and super flavorful. For drinks, I got the lychee daiquiri and my partner got the tamarind whiskey sour. Both were strong in the best way and complimented the food nicely without being overly sweet. We sat outside with the heaters, which made the whole experience even nicer -- cozy, warm, and perfect for a casual date night. Service was smooth, and everything came out quickly.
