I usually like fatty BBQ pork, but this one is really good. The fried chicken is also juicy and crispy. I like the coconut ice cream in the dessert, but I'm not a big fan of the crispy rice. Not the sort of place I would pick. However, a true Portland foodie staple and some out of town guests really wanted to try it out. First, if you order only one thing off the ala carte menu, get the French fries. They're amazing. The whole menu offering is also worthy a try - with an emphasis on combining uniquely prepared vegetables with a protein. But for me the French fries are a must not miss dish. Although there is an eclectic mix of cocktails on the menu u, the beer and wine offerings are sparse. I would imagine this is a business decision that is based on the ever growing market challenges of running a restaurant in a competitive environment like Portland with such narrow margins. This place is on the border of being really difficult to get a spot. Like each time we've tried to make a reservation even a week or two ahead, we always snag like one of the last few spots. Like paper bridge you just have to be lucky and get a spot a month out, but Oma's is starting to feel like it's getting there. The last three times we've been, we've snagged one of the last few spots and were always on the back patio. Parking is a pain in the butt just in the area in general too, so it's always kind of a rough time prior to arriving. But we keep coming back because everything here is delicious. It does lean spice heavy in the sense that a good chunk of the menu has some spice in it, so not a great option for kids or those super sensitive. But each time we come everything has been great. The main stars for us have been the roti chanai (the dip is real star) and the egg yolk fries. But everything has always been delicious and staff are always super friendly and helpful. We know you are trying hard, too hard, to be anti-establishment, but when people come into your establishment please say "hello", "welcome", anything besides the half-ars you're lucky to be here smile you all give. 1. Don't tide us over with water after we already sat for 7 minutes. Had you offered a drink when we were given water, we would have ordered a second. 2. Food was really hit or miss, consistent with other comments in other reviews. The roti with curry was amazing, but had to order a 2nd because it was very small for $16. Our chicken thigh was the same size as the wing, not acceptable especially when we were able to compare the same dish to our neighbors on each side. 3. The 2% wellness charge is not ok, especially when the service was mid at best. 4. We were given 1 to go box for 3 left over items, 2 of the 3 were pretty saucy. Please don't bring one small'ish to go box for 3 items. Overall, surprised at the experience considering they are in the Gado Gado family. There is a hidden 2% fee at the end of your bill labeled as "Employee Benefits" which is slightly annoying. Wouldn't you just rather know what you're going to be charged up front, rather than get hit with a surprise fee at the end? The food was solid and I give props to the team for trying to create something innovative. The fries, Roti Canai, and wonton mee were my personal favorites. Chinese broccoli was very much enjoyed by another individual in my party, but I found myself wishing the sauce was more savory than the sweet honey that it was. I also was not a fan of where we were seated. It was quite cold outside and part of the seating area of the restaurant is outside of the main building. The setup felt very makeshift. We were walked outside and around the building to be seated in an area behind a curtain. It was about 40 degrees outside, so everyone dining kept their big jackets on while eating. This was a good meal. I mean, really tasty food. Flavorful without being spicy lends itself to broad appeal. I went with two friends to enjoy the chef's menu, and while I enjoyed the experience, looking back there were a few too many missed details to have me scampering back. 1. I'm all about Portland restaurants optimizing seating and serving space and have zero quibbles about eating outside in a tent. While the lap blankets are a nice touch, I didn't feel any external heat source being utilized. Looking around, most diners had their jackets on. When I'm settling in for a nicer meal, I don't want to wear outerwear. 2. Service was succinct. Not warm, not helpful, but timely. It seems to me that when you're offering cuisine that people may be unfamiliar with, pausing for a moment to explain what we're eating would be helpful. We had to ask for a menu back to figure out what we were eating. 3. Dishes were meant to be shared. That's fun! But the appropriate plates and serving utensils weren't provided to make that easy. Cutting something on a tiny plate with sauce is just a messy proposition. 4. Bar program is abysmal. Wine options were non-existent, with very limited beer and cocktail choices. 5. Servings. Not serving SIZE, mind you, but how food was served that's meant to be shared. For example, one of the first courses was a lamb skewer served with a tiny fried bun (think savory beignet). We received two of these for our table of three. And this same sort of food math happened with every course. At an establishment where everyone at the table must participate, we should be able to each have our own tiny buns, dang it. And when the bill is over $100 per person, it's not too much to ask. How do you split four pieces of spring roll amongst three people? I am not joking when I say we had a mathematician at the table, and we were still flummoxed. It seems that every "family style" meal served in Portland does this, and it's annoying every time. 6. Dessert! There was one dessert option only - a cloyingly sweet rice cereal treat made with Fruity Pebbles (or some such thing) that only a child could possibly have enjoyed. No leaning into Asian cultures, no fruit. It was pretty nasty. read more

I stumbled upon Oma's after a Google search for unique places to eat in Portland led me to an article highlighting it. Oma's serves Malaysian-style dishes and is the sister restaurant to Gado Gado, which leans more Indonesian--something our very knowledgeable server explained. While the article listed Oma's as $$, I'd personally rank it closer to $$$ due to the price-to-portion ratio, though the food quality is undeniably excellent. Our server initially recommended 5-6 small plates for our party of three, but since none of us were extremely hungry, we opted for just three dishes: the crispy eggplant chaat, the tamarind fried chicken with coconut rice, and a special off-menu 6 oz Wagyu steak with coconut butter and chimichurri. We skipped the $16 roti and curry sauce--even though I'm sure it's incredible--because it just didn't feel worth it for us. Everything we did order, however, was phenomenal. The flavors were bright, balanced, and memorable. The Wagyu was one of the best I've had, and the eggplant chaat was perfectly crispy. Oma's also offers a $65 pre fixe menu (whole table participation required) that includes a variety of starters and a choice between Chinese pork or the tamarind chicken for the entrée. Dessert was a fancy rice crispy treat, which didn't wow me. For our group, the prix fixe would've been close to $200 with tip, so we stuck with à la carte. Parking: Street parking in this busy SE Division neighborhood can be tricky. We ended up a few blocks away in a residential area. Wait Time: We didn't make reservations because OpenTable charges for no-shows and even party-size changes, so we took our chances. The waiting area is tiny--maybe four people can fit inside--and you're either blocking the door or standing outside in the cold. We waited about 30 minutes for a table of three. Parties of two will likely get seated faster. Service: Outstanding. Our waiter was like a personal food tour guide--enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and fun. He checked on us often and made the experience more enjoyable. Prices: The food leans pricey, and there was a small charge on the bill that supports staff health benefits. It's not listed on the menu, but it's common in Portland. I don't mind paying it, though I think these fees should just be built into menu prices. Food Quality: Truly top-tier. Sweet, tangy, spicy, rich--every dish delivered layered flavors and great execution. Kudos to the kitchen. Ambience: This was my biggest disappointment. The front of the restaurant is beautiful, warm, and inviting... but that's not where we sat. We were led to a back deck area with a plastic ceiling and curtain "walls." Despite assurances that it was warm and cozy, it was freezing. Even our server was trying to warm his hands by the heater. The décor (exposed studs and disco balls) felt mismatched and a bit tacky for the high-quality dining experience. This space really needs better heating and an overall upgrade. Overall: Oma's offers exceptional food and fantastic service, but the price point and the back-room seating situation kept it from being a full five stars for me. So good. I didn't enjoy my first visit here. It has been a few years, so when my friend wanted to try it, I thought it would be good to revisit. Service and ambiance were great. Our waiter was very attentive. When a server delivered our fries to the table, he kind of made a face. Naturally, we were a bit taken aback. I probably made a face, too. Immediately, our waiter came to the table to check on us to see if everything was okay. The restaurant has colorful and quirky interior. My kind of vibe. Not stuffy and a little messy. The food was fantastic. I distinctly remember my experience was basically a salt bomb, it was overly salty and overshadowed any potential flavor. This was not the case on our last visit. It was more than redeeming. Bad experience, what? We got the two specials to share - ribs in a tamarind sauce and braised beef tongue. They were both so, so good. The ribs were tender and wonderfully flavored. The tongue came with a nice pickle like salad on the side. For veggies, we shared the water spinach sauteed in this pungent shrimp paste sauce goodness. We sat on the streetside patio with a pup. They kindly offered a water bowl. It's fun to people watch on Division St and there are plenty of tables outside so the staff doesn't forget about you. If you sit outside, at least walk through the interior as it's decorated in a very fun way. We opted for the prix fixe Oma's Table menu at $65/person. It felt like a great value for the cost, with plenty of courses and good size portions. Everything was delicious. It did tend to the spicier side. Standout dishes were the martabak, roti, and rice krispie dessert. They have great sauces as well. I'd be happy to order any dish again though, as well as try more on the menu. read more

Do better OMA's. Went here again after so long and was utterly disappointed. This place used to be super delicious back in the day before ownership changed but now it's another hipster-fied establishment with high priced "fusion" food. The food is barely Indonesian. Friends made reservations early on for a celebration and were told we would get inside seating. When we arrived we were ushered to the back. For starters the back patio area outside has horribly aligned space heaters. For patrons who are spending a good chunk of money here, you would expect they know how to position the tables and ceiling heaters for optimal flow to keep guests warm. We were freezing even with our jackets on! This also added to our food getting cold so fast. Other guests looked uncomfortable as well. Most main dishes we ordered pretty much had pickled chilies thrown into it. I can eat spicy but my friends could not tolerate the tablespoons of chili in our food. The description in the menu does not indicate there would be an abundance of chili. ROTI CANAI This was literally thin roti bread with a ranch sized curry sauce for $16. Not substantial at all. SALTED EGG YOLK CURRY FRIES This was good but at $12 for a small plate of fat fries feels just off. WONTON MEE For $26 you get 3 wontons mixed in 2 slices of belly with a few noodles in chili oil with chilis. This was very spicy and lackluster. We choked on the seeds on the pickled chili and had to flag for more water, it was bad. CHINESE BBQ PORK $29 A plate of a couple slices of Chinese bbq pork with two broccoli and a small side of rice and coconut chili. Just ridiculous for what it actually was, but I will say the char siu was decent. However at this price point, I could go to a Chinese roast duck place that would blow my socks off for $8 for a whole container of char siu. The special wagyu is a joke at $21-28. The meat was anything but tender even though it was pretty much rare. It was very chewy and had a coconut sweet sauce on top which did not go well with it. Why would you ruin Wagyu like that?! I tried taking photos of my food but my fingers were too frozen thus I had to order a hot tea to keep warm. Not joking. Will never come back here again. For my starter I got the cucumber raita salad ($12; cumin-ginger yogurt, radish, mint, dill, lemon vinaigrette, crispy curry chickpeas). It wasn't my favorite. The cucumber had a sort of soft-ish texture that reminds me of a pickle. It was cut into larger sized chunks too. I don't think it's inherently bad, but it wasn't for me. The flavors were nice but I wish there was more yogurt, herbs, vinaigrette and chickpeas. Then I got the Chinese BBQ pork as my main dish ($29; cherry-cola char siu glazed coppa, grilled chinese broccoli, coconut terasi sambal, ginger scallion sauce, coconut rice). It felt like they were really trying to boost their profit margins here. The bowl was mostly rice. Not too many slices of pork. Not much broccoli. The pork was decent. It had a tender, medium-rare texture to it which isn't my favorite for pork but at the same time I could appreciate it. I didn't get much flavor from the marinade or the sauce though. Overall, the food itself was ok. I'd have been ok paying $12-15 for the pork bowl as a takeout lunch. But for a nice sit down dinner I'd pass. read more

We have dinner out regularly with a good friend, and my spouse seriously upped our restaurant-selection game by finding this gem. All three of us were excited to try Malaysian-Indonesian cuisine. When I was in school in Australia, several of my roommates were from Malaysia and Indonesia, and whenever they shared their food with me it was always extraordinary. (I'm slightly embarrassed that my early-20s cooking skills probably gave them a tragically skewed impression of American food.) So yes, my expectations were high. And those expectations were more than met. This was some of the best food I've ever eaten. I always laugh when people talk about their "top meals," but it's such a relatable topic -- we all remember dishes that stay with us. This meal will be one of those for me, one that I'll bring up again and again. We chose several dishes from the à la carte menu to share, and though our server suggested ordering one or two more, he assured us we could add on later if needed. As it turned out, three dishes were perfect for the three of us -- though I did scrape the plate clean because I refused to let a single grain of rice go to waste. We had the fried chicken, the eggplant chaat, and a special that night: the Wagyu steak. The chicken arrived first, and that's when I knew we were in for something special. A friend once made a rude comment about me eating fried chicken, so I'm always oddly self-conscious about ordering it -- which means I don't indulge often. But honestly, sometimes fried chicken is the best thing on a menu, and this version was unlike anything I've ever had. Perfectly seasoned with a hint of heat, balanced by peanuts, greens, coconut rice, and (I believe) fried shallots. The flavors were incredible. This was the dish I unapologetically scraped clean. Next came the eggplant chaat. I once made it a personal project to "learn to like eggplant," and largely failed -- I enjoy Asian eggplant in curry and eggplant parm barely counts as eggplant, but most preparations just don't do it for me. This dish may have converted me. Thin slices of Asian eggplant, twice-fried into crispy chips, topped with bright chutneys and crunchy garnishes -- it was a wildly satisfying fusion of textures and flavors. The meal could have ended there and I would have left happy. And then the steak arrived. My companions thought something was wrong when I started thumping the table, but I was simply performing a very sincere homage to When Harry Met Sally because this steak deserved it. I began with just the coconut compound butter and nearly ascended. I'm so glad this came last because it was dessert -- not sweet, but untoppable. Have I never had Wagyu before? Have I never eaten before? This was transcendent. I've said more than once that I don't like chimichurri, but I added a bit to my next bite and guess what? I do like chimichurri -- at Oma's. Somehow elevated, somehow better, somehow magic. How is this kitchen witchery possible? My dining companion already commented on the surroundings, but honestly, I was so transported I barely noticed the room. My only regret is that the Oma's Table prix fixe isn't available to me because of food allergies. I have a coconut allergy, which is especially intense with the cuisine this place does. But they had a list of option ready to go & didn't make it weird. Visited Portland and stumbled upon this little gem! This was my first time trying Malaysian/Singaporean cuisine -- spicy, full-bodied flavors, and perfectly balanced textures all around. We started with an exquisite dish called "Chatt", featuring deep-fried eggplant that was crispy like potato chips and plated almost like nachos -- creative and delicious! The fried chicken was decent -- flavorful but not particularly memorable; I probably wouldn't order it again. Tamarind Mala Chix The salted egg yolk shrimp, though, was the standout. It came in a rich, curry-like sauce with bold, creamy flavors that hit all the right notes. Drinks were fantastic, and the service was top-tier -- every staff member we interacted with was warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Multiple people even checked on our table, which was really impressive! For ambience, we sat outside under a cozy tin-roof patio -- dim lighting, calm atmosphere, and that perfect Portland evening breeze. Inside had a cute, dim-lit aesthetic with fun neon touches. Parking is street only, so keep your eyes peeled! Would definitely come back to try more dishes. As a vegetarian not tooo too many things on the menu but absolutely loved the carrot curry and coconut rice. At the end of the meal I walked the waiter about getting an entree sized dish of it with rice and it is possible for those of us with dietary restrictions! Oma's Hideaway offers an incredible meal in a very hip environment. We opted to do the tasting menu to try as many of their dishes as possible. Everything was a hit but the carrot leek curry was the show stopper! We wanted to lick the bowl of that dish! The fried chicken, scallop crudo and beef skewers were also rich and flavorful. I made an impromptu decision to check out the relatively new Oma's Table Menu at Oma's Hideaway, so I packed up the pug and my husband and made it to the restaurant 60 minutes before closing on a Wednesday night. I half expected the restaurant to say it was too late in the day to begin the multi-course chef's menu meal, but no... the ushered us to the patio dining area and made special seating provisions for me and the pug! First and foremost, I can't stress how much fun I had dining here. The staff, the seating arrangements, the decor, the food, the overall good vibes... everything worked in our favor! We had a lovely evening and I want the staff to know they played a huge part in this... especially our server Caleb. What a superstar! We started the meal with the cucumber raita salad with cumin-ginger yogurt, radish, mint, dill, lemon vinaigrette, crispy curry chickpeas. I could eat this salad all day long... it's such a perfect summer dish. The roti canai was served next, handmade flaky malaysian flatbread with a delightful texture, served with a side of golden corn curry. This delicious treat was almost a meal in itself! For our protein, we opted for the tamarind mala fried chicken with a sweet & spicy tamarind sauce, Sichuan peppercorn, crushed peanut, lime leaf salt and herbs. The texture, flavor and temperature were perfect. Just be careful, there are a few little bones in the meat, but the restaurant warns patrons of this and provides a small receptacle for discarding the bones in. Oma's Table Menu is a great value, makes for a memorable experience, and I'll definitely be returning to experience this again with friends later this summer. read more

The buttered bao was phenomenal. Coconut rice was irresistible. Decor is whimsical and room is clean. Seating is tight and intimate. Service is rushed and intrusive. I've never felt so disrespected. I know you're running a business, but that was unbearable and the opposite of hospitality. read more

I would only recommend Oma's Hideaway if you don't mind super spicy food. I guess I'm dumb and wasn't expecting it to be SO spicy. The menu didn't indicate the level of heat. The fried chicken has Thai chilies on it so it was VERY spicy. Everything tastes really good though! It's all pretty salty but good. The best thing I had was the curry sauce that comes with the Roti. Service was good, they explained the menu well before we ordered. But I was a little annoyed that they kept asking if we wanted another drink, but they hadn't left us a menu to look at so... I didn't know what my options were! read more
