Kaede is a small, quiet omakase spot with a very calm and simple atmosphere. There's just one chef, and you can really see the care he puts into every detail. Each piece of nigiri was beautifully made and the quality of the fish was excellent across the board. It feels personal and thoughtful -- a great place if you're looking for an intimate, no-frills omakase experience.

Yoooo I finally found a place in Pdx for sushi that I'm excited to take my visiting foodie friends! I'll be honest, I used to hold my cravings till visiting SoCal since my fave local haunts started slacking on quality and service. Kaede tho...was quite a special experience. Maybe it was bc we sat at bar top and saw the soosh being prepared. Maybe bc we had an end of night resy so there seemed to be no rushing us out. Maybe it was the cozy vibes and attentive staff. Maybe it was the care in pairing ingredients and the precision in layering flavors. Even a morsel of ginger is delicately placed along w a light grating of wasabi snowing down from above a perfect bite of an Omakase Nigiri. Maybe it was all of the above. It was one of the best dining experiences I've had in a while. My sis and I walked out after dinner w smiles even a lil giddy from such satisfaction. Ty Kaede. You are worth the splurge and effort of going out to eat. Don't snooze on the apps. Crab miso is a lil more special than your usual. The dessert thoooooough...perfect small portions w same standard of excellence in pairing flavs, textures while not overly sweet.

This is an impressive sushi restaurant that feels intimate and special. It's not someplace I would frequent regularly but I would recommend people to try. We had the tasting menu which was thoughtful and a great way to have a larger variety of sushi. The staff were welcoming and explained each course very well. It's hard to get reservations here but that made me feel lucky for even getting in. You can only reserve a table for 1-2 people.

An Omakase to savor. We discovered Kaede by word-of-mouth. We enjoyed every morsel served. Intimate dining space. Service was friendly, well paced and efficient.

All I can say is WOW! Some of the best sushi I've ever had, and perhaps the best meal I had during my 3 weeks in Portland. Kaede is a small, intimate, and tastefully decorated spot in a fairly residential area of Portland. The chef/ owner, Shinji, was the sole sushi chef at the counter on the night we went, with his wife and co-owner Izumi and one other chef in the kitchen. We opted to start with some appetizers, including monkfish karaage, which was absolutely exquisite. Even the miso soup was bursting with a complex flavor unlike any I've ever had. We each ordered the nigiri premium, 8 pieces for $60, and added fluffy tamago and kaisen futomaki. It was all superb. Chef Shinji prepared each piece and placed it in front of us as it was made. Erik, our waiter, provided excellent service throughout, working closely with Kinji and Izumi. If you are lucky enough to score a reservation to Kaede, don't miss out on this incredible experience!

Very intimate and very exclusive feeling. This place absolutely specializes in high quality sushi. If you're looking for specialty rolls with lots of flavors going on, this is not for you. This place focuses on complementing the fishes natural flavor. Be prepared to pay for high-quality food. If you were looking for a very intimate experience with outstanding service I would recommend. But if you're looking for something more relaxed and a wide variety of flavors, this may not be the place for you. You absolutely need reservations even weeks in advance if you're considering having a meal here.

I've been excited to try this place, so I made a reservation for this place, which is the only way to get in. I was only able to get a reservation for 1 at the bar, who's is perfect for me. When I arrived, the place was quiet, and I was seated by to server at the bar where there was just a couple at the bar and the chef. This place is run by a husband (chef) and wife (server) duo with a helper in the back. With such a small staff, it is no wonder they keep this place on reservation only. This place is an intimate establishment. I ordered a couple of appetizers and the omakase. Appetizer one was the agadashi tofu, which I thought was just a run of the mill, but it was still good. The second appetizer was the Chawan-Mushi, a steamed egg dish with mushroom, which was so amazingly flavorful. I would order this again. Now for the main attfaction, the omakase. The chef first provided me a list of premium nigiri I will be enjoying. The chef placed a placement plate in front of me where he placed a single nigiri on as he meticulously prepared each single nigiri. Each one tastes differently from one another but all fresh. By the end of my omakase journey (only 8 pieces), I was still hungry, so I ended up ordering more in which the chef informed me that I can order nigiri items in single rather than in 2s. After everything, my meal was quite expensive, but just remember, I came here for an experience.

Every bite of everything we ordered was amazing, from appetizers, to rolls, sashimi and dessert. We had eggplants, liver, toro roll, sashimi, egg sushi (tamago), ice cream, crème brûlée This is a quaint, high end, small restaurant. We spent over $100 each and could still have ate more. We ordered the chef's omakase, and 2 of the 8 nigiri was out and was replaced by a different fish. That was fine since it was all good and one of the fish turned was a better quality/pricier one. The fish is flown in from Japan, so this is understandable. Some times came with 5 pieces. I am not sure why they don't do 6 so it would be an even split with the other person. This restaurant only sits 13-15 people at a time. Reservations recommended.

Phenomenal meal and service. Do yourself a favor and make a reservation here for omakase at the counter. More specifically, order the chef's choice omakase, chawan-mushi and saba battera. The chawan-mushi was so comforting and a flavor bomb with eggs and mushrooms swimming in dashi stock. The egg was so soft and reminiscent of silky tofu. The chives wrapped underneath the mackerel in the saba battera was such an amazing pairing. It did not need to be dipped in soy sauce at all. I'd also recommend the black miso cod. It was very buttery and rich in the miso marinade. All the nigiris from the chef's menu were prepared so uniquely. Since we did countertop dining the chef prepared them one-by-one in the order they were meant to be consumed. I really appreciated the variety nigiris on this menu because of the wide range in flavors. Some were light, fresh, smokey, creamy...the list goes on. The space was small, intimate and quiet. I think there were only 5 or 6 spots available at the countertop and a few tables for dining-table seating. It was nice how they ran their restaurant with everything scheduled upfront so we didn't feel rushed at all during the dining experience. I'll be remembering this meal for a while.

We had an amazing experience at kaede for my partners birthday. We Sat at the bar and watched as shinji meticulously crafted the sushi plates. He did an amazing job and I fear we are ruined for sushi now because of it. We will be back!

While it is a steep price point and you have to make reservations in advance, it is one of the best dinner experiences I have had in Portland. The scallop was hands down the best I've ever had- buttery and flaky and delicious. The owners clearly know their craft. The menu is small but every dish is done well. The portions are on the small side so expect to order quite a few dishes. But very worth it!

Small, beautiful space and ambient lighting. Sat at sushi bar and enjoyed a few beers with delicious hot green tea from the pot. Enjoyed the chefs choice nigiri selection and chefs choice sashimi as well. Service was great, definitely focused more on the chef presenting the dishes rather than the server. Drink selection was limited which made decision making really easy!

One of the better quality nigiri spots in Portland. Similar to some of the top end omakase nigiri you'd find in Seattle. Nigiri flavors are subtle, fresh and complex. Order off the seasonal/daily menu for some interesting takes. Good sake selection as well. They are reservation only and only available for max party of 2. Ambiance is quiet and spacious. Pricier end for sushi in Portland but definitely worth it.

I thought they were going to be fillers but they tasted great and actually put new fish I've never had before on the map for me! Some of my favorites were - kanpachi - kome buri - ama ebi - salmon (I liked it more than the king salmon, maybe I have peasant taste) - toro The omakase was well thought out as you can see and we even enjoyed the miso soup. I think the price tag of $100/person can initially be steep but you can easily spend this much on these nicer orders. I was also worried they might drop the quality during the AYCE portion but it continued to be delicious and service was consistent throughout (there was another group of 13 people so service was a bit slow having to divide time between the rest of the restaurant and them). I highly recommend this place and will for sure come back. Some delicious quality fish and my new favorite if I'm coming hungry!

With a combined 115 years of experience this restaurant shines with what feels like authentic sushi. We were there with a group of four and were seated promptly for our reservation at 5:45 PM. Our server Ben was an absolute delight and brought vibrancy and genuineness to his service. So shoutout to Ben. I was a bit disappointed that they were unable to accommodate my Tokyo Tea request for a cocktail (I'm always about efficiency when drinking ) but the cocktails that we did receive were elegant and refreshing. But now to the meat of the review or should I say fish? We were taken on a journey through the Toyosu fish market or so I'm and had several delicious rolls such as the Yama roll, Salmon and Scallop, Jamison and the simple California roll. We also had two of the nigiri the salmon belly and the unagi which were both fall apart tender deliciousness in your mouth. Needless to say I am looking forward to our next visit and would love to experience their version of an omakase since the quality was there.

Service was average, but the food more than made up for it. Because of that first experience, we decided to place a fairly large takeout order for a family dinner last night. Big mistake. We were told the order would be ready in 30 minutes. We arrived on time only to discover they had not even started preparing it yet. The explanation was "a computer issue," but nobody called us to let us know there would be a delay, and no real apology was offered. By the time we finally got the food, we were already late for dinner and had to head straight home. When we opened the bag, the nigiri had been packed so poorly that everything was jumbled together in a heap. We literally spent 10 minutes trying to reassemble the sushi ourselves. What disappointed us most was the way management handled the situation afterward. We called expecting that a restaurant positioning itself as upscale would want to make things right. Instead, the manager argued with us, reviewed security footage, and claimed that because we briefly checked the bag at pickup, the order must have been fine when it left the restaurant. We checked that the boxes were there -- we did not open every container because we trusted the restaurant to package the food properly. The bottom line: the dine-in experience may still be worth it because the food itself is genuinely very good, but based on our experience, order takeout at your own risk.
