I've been here way too many times to count because my mom loves this place. I'm not too sure why because I think it's just okay at best. If you do come here, the hot appetizers are probably the best on the menu. I like the boneless teriyaki wings and chicken negisaki. For me the pork buns here are not tender and not well flavored. The tempura is just okay; there is a bit too much tempura flour that is sloppily battered. The sushi is ok. I would say that it's hard to mess up on soft shell crab. All the services with the food and waitress to the atmosphere is absolutely terrible. It's like they can't make up their mind whether they want to be a sushi restaurant or a bar/club. They have the traditional seatings where you take off your shoes to sit down but then in the same area they have a bar playing loud music and people screaming every 30 seconds. The atmosphere gave me a whole headache. People were dancing in the middle of nowhere and it was loud and obnoxious. Then you have the waitress who talks extremely informal - "you good?" I didn't know I was talking to a random friend/stranger. We ordered a bunch of food but instead of serving a decent amount each time, they keep stuffing our whole entire order to our faces. 2-3 dishes every minute. Even when our table was full, they keep stuffing us food. At one point, she was looking at us as if we needed to hurry up and finish the food that they served 2 minutes ago! Then she kept handing us food like we work there and is supposed to hold the food without hands as we eat or until we finish. This happened MULTIPLE TIMES throughout the entire meal. The food itself was mediocre at best. The sashimi still has a frozen taste and the vegetable inside the udon was not fresh at all. It was yellowing. It's overpriced and they justify the charge of the food by simply adding avocado to everything while the main point of it - the sushi - wasn't even fresh or good. I received flyers for Bamboo Ya and decided to try it since it's new in the neighborhood. I did not have high expectations walking in so I was blindsided by the amazing decor and atmospheric presentation. I felt like I was walking into a fine dining sushi restaurant. The decoration, lighting, Bamboo Ya signpost, and furniture arrangements flowed extremely well together. As I sat down on the chair, I sank down. The seats are uniquely shaped with a dip in the butt area so you are lower to the ground and the table is higher than average. I didn't mind, but height challenged people may. I ordered the salmon teriyaki lunch special that came with rice, salmon teriyaki, soup, california rolls, a generous portion of ginger, and shumai. I immediately noticed that not 1, but 2 noticeably large chunks of salmon were served with veggies and broccoli underneath. The rice was somewhat stale and shumai tasted microwaved. I had the seafood garlic udon and it was coated with a flavorful creamy sauce with a lot of shrimp, scallops, squid, scallion and fish cakes. The texture of the udon was great too and I would order it again. I definitely want to come back to try the sushi here next time! This place is a stone's throw away from where I live and I wish I could give this place 3.5 stars, but I don't want to be part of rating inflation. But it's on Austin St., so it has to appeal to people who don't just want good food; they want an experience. The time I took my roommate out for his birthday and they served us a large portion of sushi and sashimi on what a serving board with... colored lights. I flat-out asked "Why are you serving sushi and sashimi with colored light?" She looked very confused and said "That's how we always do it." I ate from the curious serving board thinking "They're on restaurant row here so they have to stand out. But man, they are trying way too hard." Good food, if you always go to Austin St. I'm sure you'll like this place just fine, but the ambiance, the differentiating gimmicks, I don't care for those. It was clean, airy and what a nice, semi-romantic way to enjoy our lunch. We asked for green tea and customized 2 rolls that were not listed on the menu- no issues. I love places that can adjust to a patron's needs (within reason) at the drop of a hat. These small yet significant yields add to the overall experience and assessment. I've only given 4 stars to BY last few times because they are the busiest (thus freshest) sushi spot in the area who doles out innovative and yummy creations each time, but now that I've dined in- they really deserve 5 stars. The place is serene and relaxing. The service is great. The food is amazing for the price. And they are frigging consistent. I asked for spicy mayo on the side and they gave me that for no charge which was nice. Short Ribs w/ Sautéed Onions: It was pretty tasty and it came with white rice. It was perfectly matched with the sautéed onions and complemented the ribs really well. Bento Box: This came with a lot of food and they give you lots of choices which was great. I was impressed. This location has had a variety of restaurants over the years. I don't think I had tried any of them in over 10 years. I predict Bamboo Ya will stick around. There are a lot of Japanese/Sushi/Asian fusion places on and around Austin. How does Bamboo Ya differentiate? Well first off their pricing is 20-30% less. Sushi is very reasonable with most normal rolls around $4-$6 and speciality rolls $10-$14. The portions were nice sized too. The service was great and the crowd seemed to be more local compared to other Austin St places. Everything we had was good. We were over in the Austin Street area and decided to give Bamboo Ya a chance. It was a bit out of the excitement of Austin street itself but we decided to try it out regardless. Walking in the decor is very hip. And the restaurant seems to go on forever but we sat near the front as we had to go to a movie. I ordered the vegetable dumplings, he the calamari and a piece of toro sashimi. The dumplings were ok. You can tell that they were frozen. Eh. Then the calamari. It was frozen as well. The price was very reasonable for everything we got and I would happily come back (in fact, I have for their lunch special where I enjoyed the pineapple seafood rice). Ginger lovers must get the tuna tataki - the flavor combination with the shaved mango is perfect with the meat.
