The sushi rolls are consistently good quality and reasonably priced. I like the Japanese-style seating booths for a cozy dinner with family or friends. They changed the name to Sushi Ya from Bamboo Ya. Just in case there's any confusion. There's scaffolding above it, too. I haven't been there before the name change, so I'm not sure how it was before, but it smelled in the bathroom and the back room area where there's a TV. Maybe it smelled of mold or some odor that I wasn't fond of, so I moved to the area where you can sit without your shoes on. My friend who came a bit later said there's always an odor at the back. That's not good to hear. Service wise, they kept on bugging us. If there's such a thing as too much service where it gets burdensome, this was it. Every minute, they would come back asking if we wanted to order or if we were ready yet. Chill out and relax. Let us take a minute to ourselves. Anyways, food wise, we got a rainbow roll for the table, which was good. I ordered a sushi burrito for myself with the tuna inside. For lunch special, I got a choice of soup or salad, so I got the miso soup with it. We asked about the dessert, and they only had fried ice cream and this other fried dessert, which I wasn't fond of as I am taking fried food out of my diet. This is a pretty decent sushi place located in Rego Park, very close to the trains and to the mall area. It has a fairly large menu consisting of intricately named special rolls In addition to the usual maki rolls. There is ample seating inside, including some traditional style seats in booths where you need to take your shoes off, which I thought was kind of unique. My friend and I shared 3 rolls (1 regular and 2 special): Yellowtail scallion, Golden Tuna, Pink Lady. The favorite one being Pink Lady (Tuna, salmon, spicy kani, mix green, avocado, oshinko wrapped with soya bean paper and ikura on the top) which is light and refreshing due to no sushi rice inside. The prices are ok, like $12-16 per special roll and $6-7 for each regular roll. Bamboo Ya on the surface appears to be another Chinese owned sushi place in Queens. However, for this kind of establishment, I find them to be top notch in all aspects. The place is very clean and it is very spacious. They even have these unique wooden booth seating areas where you have to take off your shoes. In terms of food, I have eaten here several times and everything has always been very fresh. The sushi bar is at the very front so you can actually see the workers making all of the sushi. The non-sushi stuff we have had (tempura, yakisoba, pork katsu, salads, ramen) have been equally good as well - boasting good flavor and seasoning all around. I had a bicycle with me, and had asked him if he can let the staff inside know that I have a pickup order, so when they are done please let me know, and I will come into get it. I didn't want to block the restaurant with my bicycle. He responded with a no and said that he cannot leave his outside post. The ambiance of this restaurant is very sleek and a bit over the top in the best way. But you can also show up in sweats and a hat and feel right at home. We ordered so much food and they have an amazing lunch special that runs from 11-4pm, even on a weekend. We did the BBQ squid and the Rick shrimp to start. So good. The Mayo sauce on top was tasty and the squid had a slightly sweet brown sauce. We both got the 3 roll lunch special. I got eel cucumber, shrimp tempura and spicy tuna. I liked all of them but wasn't a fan of the spicy tuna. The fish was minced up so fine it almost felt like a mushy paste and they put the caviar roe in it which was unexpected. It was a lot of food and we didn't spend much. We were the first people in the restaurant and then other folks started to show up. The staff are friendly and attentive. It's very clean and organized. The california in the bento box tasted bad, they give a good amount of salmon in the bento box. The shrimp tempura has mayo in it which just ruined the whole taste as most places don't put mayo inside of shrimp tempura. The yellowtail wasn't fresh the roll just tasted horrible. Not a bad Japanese restaurant in the area. They even have those wooden booths where they imitate seating at a restaurant in Japan where you have to take off your shoes. This was the first restaurant I ever tried in Rego Park, and I've dined here a few times before the pandemic. I love their sushi! I've also tried dining outside here once during the pandemic, and I've ordered takeout and delivery from them. Their indoor dining from what I remember had quick service, but for some reason, when I tried their outdoor dining, service seemed really slow. They also have some of my favorite sakes on their menu, and it's not too expensive to order! Their lunch specials are really good deals too, and I loved their lunch bento box when I dined in. However, I ordered one for takeout, and it seemed very small compared to when I dined in. I'm not sure if the smaller portion was due to it being a delivery order. The delivery also cost a lot more, but I assume this is due to the third party platforms charging such high fees to the restaurant (I am pretty sure they raised their prices on the third party platforms to cover for the commission cost). Their sushi is consistently good, but cooked food can be hit or miss. I got the mango chicken delivered recently and the chicken was over cooked and the whole dish seemed soggy. But, you might need to ask, which you should because it adds to it. They have a wide range of appetizers to choose from. Lots of vegetarian options. Maria is top bartender. She draws in the crowd, because she has a great personality and makes a great drink. Their cocktail menu varies by season. In the summer they have a watermelon margarita, and use fresh watermelon. It's one of my favorites. Their wines change, frequently. But, they never have anything too good. A lot of regulars come here, and the bar is usually a friendly crowd. I decided to dine in here for my love of Asian cuisine. I'm not from this area so I was curious of this place after passing by a couple of times. It seems like the place to be at at least in this neighborhood on a Sunday night (I'm trying not to say "hip" lol). After walking in, the bar and a small table placed between the bar and entrance were packed. All together maybe 10-12 seats. Nothing huge but all the seats were taken. Good for them I guess. But as a lone diner, I was trying to see if I could sit at the bar since I also wanted a drink with my food and didn't want to take up an entire table. That wasn't going to happen tonight. The restaurant is sort of split into three sections. The front which has the bar for alcohol, a sushi bar, and cashier/delivery pick up. The second (middle section) are large booths with wooden seats and a large table in the middle. It really catches your eye since it's a unique Japanese aesthetic. I think there's about 3-4 of these booths (I didn't count). Great for large groups. I debated on sitting here. But since these tables seated larger parties and you have to take your shoes off to sit in them (I wear 14 hole boots that are a pain to get on and off), I decided to continue on to the back section. There's a bunch of regular seats back here. Emphasis on regular. It felt like a dead zone back here despite a couple of tables being occupied. Sunday night. The place had a nice flow of people. Since I wasn't the only person here, it took a while to place my order in. The waitresses were nice. No complaints there. But when I was ready to order my food and drink, it took a while to get my order in since the only two waitresses working the back were preoccupied. I felt a tad forgotten. For food, I decided to order Chicken Yakitori, Coconut shrimp, Deep Fried Roll, and a Lychee Mimosa. The appetizers were top notch. It was my first time having coconut shrimp and I absolutely loved it! I never thought these two things would combine well. Although it tasted great, I thought the presentation was rather dull. The shrimp looked like it was just thrown on the plate. No resemblance to what was pictured on the menu. It had cilantro and a cherry as garnish. I thought it was quite random. Wasn't really impressed by the presentation. The yakitori was my favorite item tonight. Two skewers with chicken, onions, and peppers. Nicely charred, excellent taste. I ended up ordering seconds after the sushi. The presentation for this was better. There was a giant leaf (couldn't identify) under the skewers. A better attempt at presentation than the coconut shrimp dish. However the skewers still arrived with cilantro and cherry (that might be their favorite garnish haha). I'm assuming the sauce poured over the skewers was teriyaki sauce. Nice addition, tasted great. I was highly disappointed by the sushi. I ordered a Deep fried roll which consisted of white fish, salmon, cream cheese, Kani, and avacado. Topped with eel sauce and spicy Mayo. I opted for this because I wanted to try something new tonight. Initially, the sushi wasn't bad. It smelled fishy (for lack of a better term) obviously. However, because it was deep fried, it felt quite dry after the third piece of sushi I had (six pieces served). I felt like it was too much. I got pretty bored of it quickly. Now this might be the first time ever - I decided to not finish the sushi and asked for it to be taken away. I decided to go for my second round of Yakitori to redeem the dinner. Now maybe I could've tolerated the sushi if I had gotten my Lychee Mimosa early on when I started eating. After receiving my second appetizer, I asked about my drink. The waitress told me the bartender was backed up with drinks and I would have to wait a bit. I didn't get my drink until a bit after I received my second round of Yakitori. And once I had it, although it looked nice, it was disappointing. It tasted more alcoholic than mixed with juice. I didn't taste anything lychee related. I desired the sweetness and was let down. In order for me to finish the drink, I decided to order a Sprite and mix it. That's how I finished the drink. The place is nice. The staff is friendly. Some of the food is amazing. But it has some negative qualities. I don't like writing negative reviews. And I'm not really aiming for this review to be negative. I'm simply just sharing my experience here. It was my first time. My first Yelp review ever for a well deserved place in Rego Park. This is a Sushi Bar/Restaurant that appeases to all people. On the bar side us regulars get a hell of a deal with their happy hour. Hard to find beers that are cheaper then $4 for tap or bottles. Wine glasses ($6) filled to the brim (I dont even drink wine but what perk it is if you do). Liquor pours that are generous. Depending on the hour of the day/night the bar can go from being slow to a packed at night thurs/fri. The bar typically has all the locals who dont mind making friendly conversation with newbies. The locals also have their own bluetooth speaker and add a mix of music that plays there. Music can vary from A to Z. From time to time you can even dance if you like. As with anything there are some hater establishments on Queens bully out there. Yes they pour generous but thats what keeps a steady stream of customers. Whenever i have brought fam/friends there they always manage to come back. As for the restaurant it is charming and the servers are always polite and respectful. The food can vary from very good to decent. Yes I have had issues with the food and sent it back a handful of times but a handful of times in 7 years of patronizing the place is not bad at all.
