Wow do not ever go here. If you want good food just go next door to chens which is incredible. Now why I will NEVER go back here. I have food allergies, one of which being egg, I have had 2 allergic reactions from this place. I expressly asked for no egg, they didn't care I have also gotten food poisoning here 4 times on 4 different dishes. This is unacceptable. The food is clearly not fresh, they are never willing to make any accommodations, and the staff is shockingly rude. A waiter once told me to shut up when I complained about undercooked food. There are far better options for Chinese, such as right next door, a few blocks down, or even the gosh darn sewer probably is more fresh and tasty than this place. The food is OK, but the service is just terrible. I live in the neighborhood and used to come here fairly frequently -- but I just won't do it anymore. The waiter seems to purposely avoid my boyfriend and me when we go, leaving us to have to flag him down (I have NEVER seen this place even close to packed) and ask several time for more water, extra rice, whatever. We are not demanding customers by any stretch, but I mean, we do get thirsty. Kotobuki is about a bazillion times better sushi. Chen's has about a bazillion times better pan-Asian. Better bento boxes in the city. Ordered the teriyaki salmon bento box ($13). The salmon seemed like quality fish but it was dry and overcooked with teriyaki sauce on the side, and to make matters worse, the salmon was placed hot on a bed of baby greens which wilt under the fish. Wonton soup includes the equivalent of french's onions, which is cool if you are into that. Also, when ordering I informed the waitress of my food allergy and she told me they would only be able to accommodate that since it wasn't busy. I repeated it back to her to make sure I understood that correctly, so lesson learned -if you have food allergies - don't eat here when it is busy! Bambu is a neighborhood staple and a lot of us go there because we lack other good options. The staff are very friendly; no problems there. However, since a change in ownership a little while ago, the quality of the food and most importantly, the cleanliness have both dramatically declined. Speaking first about cleanliness, the restaurant has not been painted, deep-cleaned or otherwise updated in years. The whole place is very dirty. Diners have recently reported (my friends!) mice running around the dining area and rats running out of their loading dock/kitchen area. The curtains leading to the bathrooms (through which you have to pass) are so grimy and dirty, you hardly want to touch them. Restaurants should maintain their physical environments much better than Bambu is doing. It's flat-out gross. Secondly, the food. The food here used to be very very good! Now, it is hit-or-miss. Especially the sushi, which has declined in both quality and in thoughtful preparation. If you live in the neighborhood, try Sweet Agave for a family-friendly affordable meal (right next door). Bambu, please clean up your act! You used to be great! read more

First of all I live in the Palisades neighborhood. Secondly, I eat at Bambu at least once a week. I realize everybody has different tastes and different expectations, but I, for one, am extremely grateful that a restaurant of this caliber is in my neighborhood. Having eaten at Bambu probably over 100 times by now I can honestly say that I love pretty much everything on the menu. The Chinese is uniformly good, the Thai is great ( if you eat it at the restaurant- it doesn't travel well- and I particularly love the sushi. Is it the best I"ve ever had?? No. It isn't. But it's pretty fantastic for a neighborhood place and I've eaten sushi at many different places all around the world so I have some sort of reference point. As far as cons go, the wait staff can come off as unresponsive but they're really not. If you need something that you're not getting, don't remain silent and bitch inside your head or to your fellow diners. Yell to them or grab them when they go by. They're all nice individuals even though their minds can often be on other orders. They have always responded quickly to anything I've requested. The prices are not low. They are fairly healthy prices and I can sometimes do a doubletake when my bill total is announced- but its a fairly minor doubletake as doubletakes go and the food is always clean, fresh, and tasty. Occasionally my delivery orders are incorrect ,but the ratio to being correct is low and they always go out of their way to make up for any error. (free entrees and the like). I'm not wild about the decor of the restaurant , and the feng shui seems off a bit, but the absolute substantive consistency of the menu is irrefutable and I'm not an easy person to please. Great food is great food. And Bambu has great food. read more

This place is awesome! Located on MacArthur Blvd in NW DC, Bambu is by far the best Sushi Bar I've been to since moving to the area from the West Coast seven years ago. The helpings are plentiful, the prices are very reasonable, and the servers are attentive and friendly. I live in Northern VA, but my job takes me all over DC and Maryland. Recently I've been working in the MacArthur/Canal Street area and stumbled upon Bambu last week. I stopped in for lunch and was instantly hooked. I've been back twice more since, and plan to go back two to three times a week as long as I'm working in that area. A.J., one of the servers, is especially professional and attentive. The moment I walked in today, she was already handing me the Sushi Menu and Soda, even before I was seated at the bar. Now that's what I call Customer Service!! This place puts all the big "so called" Sushi Restaurants to shame. I can't say enough good things about Bambu, and I can only hope that they will continue to thrive and prosper for many years to come, so both locals and visitors can enjoy the excellent food, atmosphere, and service. My family has had a house in the neighborhood since 1980 and I remember when the location was a gas station. Indubitably my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood and my top 5 for the city. Washington DC. We had dinner here on the way to GWU Lisner Auditorium. A small and informal pan asian place. Very good food and service. For a light dinner for two, ordered only a crispy fish appetizer and entry size tom yum soup. The fish came with a very nice lemongrass salad and was absolutely delicious. The tom yum soup was very good too but could have had some lemongrass taste that is usual. We're in a hurry but I am sure they would have accommodated us by bringing some on the side. It's small and has a friendly atmosphere (but don't go there if you want to have a quiet conversation because sometimes it can be loud). It's a very popular place to eat and always has a lot of diners. Has a full bar and small TV. It's inexpensive and very tasty. Used to come here but not in a few years, til yesterday's lunch. Found an interesting menu of Chinese and Tha and Japanese dishes. The menu document itself was noticeably greasy, which set the tone for the whole place--did not look or feel clean enough, from unwired table tops to kitchen food prep going on far too close to the not very clean bathrooms. Was noisy with kids running around and their sound bouncing off hard concrete ceiling. Service was marginal, as in "I am too busy to get to you right now, or until I feel like. Food was adequate and prices not an outrage. Parking is an outrage. Bambu is in cahoots w offices upstairs and lets these people block in their own customers so the customers cannot get out without ten weeks of pleading and histrionics. One of the blockers called me a J.A. and I returned the favor and would have tried to have him ticketed or arrested for threadiening violent behavior. Two waitresses thought this arrangement was all normal, but they may have been accustomed to the disorder and violence of Bangkok. This is the absolute worst service I have ever experienced in DC or elsewhere. The google search, Yelp review and even their own website and menu said that they close at 10:30pm. We arrived at 9:45pm and the employees acted like we were such a burden on them when they were supposed to be open for almost an hour longer. They were incredibly rude, told us we had to order everything at once (which was fine because we knew we were there a little late) but then proceeded to treat us like we had done them a horrible disservice. We were eating quickly to get out of there since we were clearly not welcome and they were mopping the floor around us, and our server still asked us at 10:05 if we could go ahead and pay now, pointing at the ticket while we were mid-meal. We said sure and asked when they closed, trying to apologize if we were confused on their closing time (which we weren't) and the server told us that they don't go by the website, they close whenever there are no customers and if we weren't there, they would have been closed already. I would have felt bad for keeping them open late except for the fact that restaurants have specific hours for the very reason to let customers know when to come and when they are closing. They are open until 10:30. How were we supposed to know that they don't "go by the menu or website." This was beyond ridiculous and I don't think I've ever been treated worse in a restaurant. I will never be going back and their food is mediocre at best. The sushi at Whole Foods blows theirs out of the water, which is sad for them since it's a grocery store. I highly recommend that you go anywhere else but Bambu since they clearly have no regard for their customers. I wish I could give them zero stars but Yelp will not allow it. read more

Worst food ever! I ordered spring rolls, basil chicken, drunken noodles. The spring rolls were greasy and limp but I managed to eat them. The basil chicken was okay, but still pretty bland.The worst of the meal was the drunken noodles which were over cooked and falling apart into a grayish soupy slop! Not one noodle stayed together in pieces longer than an inch once spooned! The meat in the noodles was a ground chicken which just added to the sloppiness of this bland meal. After showing the noodle dish to my husband and him looking at me like I was trying to poison him, we decided I should call Bambu to let them know that the dish was not edible and that I would be returning it to them. The woman on the phone quickly told me not to come to the restaurant, and that the delivery man would come and pick the food up. I described the fact the the noodles were overcooked and falling apart in a soupy mess and she said that drunken noodles come that way which I have never seen before.I told her that even she would agree that the noodles were inedible which I truly believe. A few minutes after we had hung up the phone, she called me again to inform me that the delivery man was on his way and then told me to never call them again! I excused myself and asked her to repeat what she said because I could not believe that she had actually said. My ears had not deceived me, she told me never to call them again of which my response was don't worry, I won't. I could not believe how rude she was to me!
