    Great company and food

I found one of my favorite sushi spots. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I can't explain it, but there's such a great vibe inside - from the decorations to the seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The quality of service is really great - servers kept on checking if my table was okay. I ordered the California and shrimp tempura rolls. I enjoyed them so much and would definitely go back more if I was closer. I will recommend this spot to my local Nova friends!

I have tried so many different sushi restaurants throughout nova, and nothing compares remotely to Tachibana. They have high quality sushi that tastes very fresh. Do not expect perfect service here though- just come for the food! Also do note that they don't have those "specialty rolls" with a lot of toppings and different sauces that a lot of restaurants have. It's best to get nigiri or sashimi here.

Tachibana is your go to place for Japanese cuisine in McLean. They have been there for long time and are standard setting in the area. You will get Japanese chefs that know the cuisine and culture. Their products tend to be fresh although there are some miss or hit items (salmon sometimes is too briny and the Shrimp is sometimes chewy). If you go for the specials you will not be disappointed. Bento boxes are a hit with my younger kids and the chirashi bowl a hit with the teen. While you will be enticed to go for sushi, also venture outside of the box. I really enjoy the beef and vegetable sukiyaki when I have a cold; it's a big pot of soup with a light broth. They also have a variety broths for ramen that are delicious. Where could they improve? Add some technology allowing online reservations and ordering.

One of my go-to sushi spots--always reliable. We got a spread of: age-dofu, yakitori, beef negimaki, zaru soba, salmon skin roll, sushi regular, sashimi regular, salmon onigiri, and some à la carte nigiri--tuna, yellowtail belly, salmon, and mackerel. Would skip the age-dofu next time--texture and flavor just weren't there. Yakitori was fine, good not great. The salmon skin roll? Crazy. We liked it so much we got a second. Fish quality across the board was superb. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dining room is clean and cozy, staff is super kind, and clean bathroom![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Delicious Japanese food in the McLean area! [[HIGHLIGHT]]I would recommend going early because it tends to get pretty busy when it hits dinner time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food is amazing but the fish and sushi will always be the best. I have been several time and this time I decided to get a cold soba noodles. It was delicious but nothing mind blowing. Previously, I have gotten their sushi and sashimi and those have always been amazing. The service is always immaculate and they are all so nice. Always a solid choice when it comes to Japanese food.

Lunch specials! Mon-fri 11:30am-2pm. Sat & sun 12:00-2:30pm. Great pricing!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Place needs a reinvestment. Nothing has improved or upgraded since early 2020 covid.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Bathrooms, doors, table, chairs all need a renovation.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love this place but also disappointed the place isn't being reinvested in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]My mom calls is tempura house because she can smell the oil in her hair after her visit.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Food quality is still good across the board and service is still up to par but dam, [[HIGHLIGHT]]clean up the place a bit please.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Up front, I eat here at least twice a week. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love the quality of the food and the people who make Tachibana feel like the neighborhood izakaya, the neighborhood (diner) that everyone from the family after soccer practice to the international business makers go to and feel comfortable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Their green tea is phenomenal, and I love their miso soup. It's what my husband brought me when I was at my sickest time and so I will always associate it with healing. Their sushi combos are epic and you can't go wrong with any of them. I love their hamanegi roll and my hubby loves the negimaki with beef (beef wrapped around scallion) or the salmon shioyaki. Come early to get in and enjoy before the rush. If you want take out, order at least several hours before. You won't regret it.

Donburi -- Tuna, Salmon and Yellowtail

A few of us spontaneously decided to get Tachibana for dinner this past Thursday and it was a good first experience for me. A couple of my friends have been here a few times and say their lunch specials are definitely worth the price. The service was pretty quick and we enjoyed our entrees at a round table. Their hot tea was quite enjoyable while we were waiting for the food. DONBURI: TUNA, YELLOWTAIL AND SALMON (9 PC) - 36.50 Not a cheap price and definitely more of a splurge for a regular weekday dinner. This came with a side of miso soup which was pretty standard. The donburi bowl was well presented, with each piece of fish spreading neatly across the bowl in a pinwheel shaped, topped with some garnish, lemons, ginger and wasabi. Each piece of sashimi was pretty thick and they give you a good amount of sushi rice that's been topped with some nori and small slivers of ginger. The sashimi quality was fantastic. I enjoyed the yellowtail a lot. The salmon and tuna were good, too! Overall, this was filling and tasty. I would recommend it if you are down to splurge. A couple of my friends got the beef sukiyaki which looked really good. I may have to try that next time!

My friend invited me to eat with him in this restaurant. This is probably a rare occasion that I even step into McLean but this was a unique surprise for me. Walking in here on a Thursday evening, it was pretty quiet for the most part until the dinner rush started to come in. Lots of business men and giant groups of families started swarming in. I thought I was missing out as I stood out in normal clothing. Anyways, I got started with Gyoza (pork dumplings), an all time classic. You can't go wrong with that accompanied with soy sauce + vinegar. Pretty solid crisp on the bottom, soft at the top where you know for sure this is pan fried. Very good. I wasn't craving soup despite how cold it was so I opted for another classic; Tonkatsu. Funny enough the dish came with Miso Soup before the Tonkatsu so I can't really complain. Breaded pork loin and deep fried to perfection. The dish came with three pieces of Tonkatsu all evenly chopped over a small bed of cut cabbage with a small dash of yuzu paste on the side. There was a small sauce bowl of Bulldog sauce which in my opinion the perfect sauce to pair it with. I also got a small rice bowl which was enough for me to eat the entire dish with too. Was it good? I think the Gyoza is good but it's not really much different than other places in the DMV I've been to. It's a warm up for sure. The Tonkatsu was crispy, hot, not too greasy and had a nice crunch to it with every bite. In the pictures you'll see that the three pieces look really big but I don't personally think it was overall filling. Miso Soup, small cubes of tofu and seaweed in a bowl in a steaming bowl. Pretty good, though like gyoza, it's also just something to warm up to before the actual Entrée. The only downside in my opinion is the price point.. Paid around 30 for the Tonkatsu & the 7.5 for the Gyoza... This is not a cheap option for Japanese food. I think there are better options price wise but still worth checking out if you are in the area.

As of writing this review, Tachibana has a review of 3.9 stars at 985 reviews and I must say that is probably a very accurate rating for Tachibana at this current moment. I think that the service is still relatively great for the several visits to Tachibana. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance of the restaurant is quite comfortable with dimmer lighting, large open spacing and nice accenting wooden furniture.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The servers and all the cooks seem to have been at Tachibana for years and know all of its regulars by heart which makes it even more comforting. If you arrive early for lunches or dinners, the seating will be quick but I have had experiences where the wait was close to 45 minutes to an hour. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service will almost always be better when the restaurant is less crowded here.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Some standout dishes are the Kanpachi collars broiled with Teriyaki sauce, the spicy scallop temaki and Hamachi or Maguro sashimi. I would consider these dishes as pretty close to their specialties and they are quality dishes that are almost always really delicious. The Kanpachi collars are clean but nice and fatty as well so the Teriyaki sauce that caramelizes the fat even more with some sugar makes the collars really melty and deliciously balanced, especially if you pair with some rice and pickled ginger. The Spicy Scallop temaki's are great because they make the choice of adding some fried tempura flakes into the temaki adding some more texture while still having the buttery tender chopped scallops. For the sashimi, their chefs have always been serving good slices of sashimi for a while so it is a reliable choice. For the higher prices, I think these items are definitely worth it. Some things I wouldn't recommend are pretty much anything salmon, I find the salmon to be a bit too briny and not a super clean fatty taste. it is likely that their salmon isn't salt-cured or cured long enough to remove the ocean-like brine aroma. Anything shrimp I find to be a hit or miss, sometimes they come out chewy and overcooked and some are perfect so I wouldn't risk it anymore. Overall, The rule of whether you order 'correctly' or not, i.e. choosing their specialties versus filler items on the menu, definitely is in play for Tachibana. Some of the items can be borderline excellent to quite underwhelming depending on what you order. I think I would return only with company if I was invited but I wouldn't choose to come back on my own because of slight inconsistencies.

Well, you got my vote and my loyalty. Place itself is not impressive and service is nice, but not superb. So,I thought on 4 stars, but this food... Wasabi - made in the house, soy sauce- made in the house by chef recipes. Soy sauce is home made!!!! Thick ,complex, tangy and not salty, amazing!!! I ordered sashimi combo this time and it's served with not white lousy rice, but takikomi gohan( please try it). This is one of the most complex flavor combinations in rice I ever had. Sashimi itself was outstanding, fish selection was excellent, with scallops, squid and freshest cuts of fishes. Previous times I tried rolls and it was amazing as well. So,prices are high, this is not sushi eatery where you can casually grab your lunch. My adventurous eater and I tried out Sushi Koji after rugby yesterday. It was a real treat. Our…read moreserver was very helpful in helping us decide what to get, and we thought we would try sashimi (after reading reviews about the place) as well as noodles. Fellow Yelpers did not steer us wrong! We ordered Otoro (fatty tuna) and sake belly (salmon belly) sashimi, listed as 3 pieces each. We also ordered tempura udon, a shrimp tempura roll*, takoyaki, and mentaiko butter udon (off the specials menu). Let me begin by saying the space is clean, roomy, and well-decorated. We enjoyed looking at the artwork and figurines, which included anime figures that we recognized. There were many tables, and though they may be physically close together, there is enough separation to be comfortable without being on top of each other or feeling cramped. There was a family of five that was seated next to us partway through the meal, and I never felt like the noise level changed or that we suddenly felt as if there were more people around. The takoyaki came out covered in bonito flakes. The sauce was a perfect blend of tempered spicy mayo as my adventurous eater enjoyed it without being overwhelmed by heat. The bites were well-sized as not to be too large, but we were able to bite in without burning our tongues our with the right balance of batter and octopus, and we both enjoyed it greatly. The sashimi came out with the shrimp tempura roll on a beautifully arranged boat - 4 pieces each! We each tried two pieces of otoro and sake belly, and the pieces just melted into our mouth. The otoro was garnished with what appeared to be hint of wasabi and maybe chopped jalapeño, which was too much for my adventurous eater to try, so I gently scraped it off. Neither of us were able to taste anything but the well-chosen slices of fatty tuna, which were a hit. We then tried the sake belly which were garnished with a sliver of fried garlic and garlic paste. Again, I scraped it off for the adventurous eater, who then raved about how delicious it was! I tried it with the garlic and agreed. The garlic was perfectly fried, and was the right amount not to overwhelm the delicate buttery texture and flavor of the salmon belly. Although, I will admit - while it's a nice flavor to add, the sashimi itself didn't need anything to be added. The tempura udon came out, with perfectly battered pieces - 2 shrimp, an asparagus, an onion ring, a slice of sweet potato, and a slice of eggplant. My adventurous eater attacked the shrimp while I munched on veggies. The batter was crispy, light, and not greasy. My mentaiko butter udon came out and I am so glad I ordered it! There was a little nest of noodles, with two halves of a soft-boiled egg, and plenty of creamy sauce. The menu described the dish as buttery and umami and it did not deceive. The udon was perfectly chewy and slurpable, coated with delicious creamy sauce. I debating mixing in the eggs because they looked so perfect, so I dipped one half in the sauce instead and ate that whole, before mixing in the other half into my bowl. Even my adventurous eater tried a little bit of my udon and agreed that it was delicious! Not having had mentaiko butter before, I looked it up before writing this review. The dish is described as being a spicy-fish roe butter sauce, but what we are talking about is a very mild heat. The dish was warming, tasty, and very comforting. It was also surprisingly light considering the buttery richness of the flavors. I finished every last bit of the noodles in my bowl and drank the rest of the sauce, with all the fish roe stirred in. I may have also commented a couple of times on how phenomenal the dish was. That was when our server shared that it was the first day it had been on the menu, so they were looking for feedback. I would say that the dish alone is worth checking out, but I feel like you will keep coming back due to the quality of everything else. I think this place is a gem and I will definitely look for excuses to return to Oakton to eat there again. Between the friendly service, the cheerful ambiance, and the amazing food, this is hitting all the right notes! * My adventurous eater filled up on everything else before even getting to the shrimp tempura roll, so we ended up packing up the rest of the udon and the shrimp tempura roll to bring home. Due to life, the roll never made it into the fridge, so we tragically had to toss it without trying it. I wish I could tell you how it was, but I can say the roll was beautifully formed and served and looked absolutely delicious. This is where I wish I had taken pictures of everything.

I initially thought it would be mostly rolls, but it leaned more toward nigiri. That said, everything was super fresh and really well prepared, so no complaints there. I recently started eating seafood again after years of avoiding it, so I have been easing into it, and this was actually a really good place to do that. The fish tasted fresh, clean, and not overly fishy, which made it a lot easier to enjoy. The Osaka roll, which our server recommended, was really good, but my favorite was definitely the paradise roll from the sushi boat. Anything with shrimp tempura is a win for me, and this one hit the spot. The ambiance is cute, cozy, and on the smaller side, which made the whole experience feel more quiet and intimate. It did not feel rushed at all, which I appreciated, especially since we were breaking our fast. We ended up taking a lot of food to go because the portions were so generous, and surprisingly, everything still tasted fresh and delicious even the next two days. The only downside is that it is definitely on the pricier side, but the quality, portions, and overall experience helped justify it. Overall, great quality sushi, generous portions, and a calm, intimate vibe. Definitely a spot I would come back to, especially if I am in the mood for fresh sushi without a loud or hectic atmosphere.

Not as much as parking available (just street or parallel in McLean Metro Station Kiss and Ride lot). It's not a super big place, and was chilly (good for sushi!). I recommend coming for lunch for all the specials! We came on a Friday and got the Salmon Lover (3 salmon nigiri with 2 different salmon rolls [6 pieces each]) for only $19! It came with miso soup and salad. We also tried the 3 sampler special: comes with a wagyu beef nigiri, o-toro, and uni. All of the cuts were refreshing and delicious!! The Taste of Umi is truly AMAZING!!!!! This omakase in a box is very worth it. It can definitely be split between 2 people if you get other items. It come with miso soup and salad. The homemade Umi soy sauce is to DIE FOR!!!! It only comes with the Taste of Umi... it's less salty and more sweet than typical soy sauce. Lunch comes with 6 items versus dinner is 9 items (double the price of lunch).
