We were a little nervous about the restaurant being so empty when we walked in, but minutes after we ordered, the place filled up so much that they had to start turning people away. Clearly, Banana Leaf is a crowd-pleaser. We started off with the much acclaimed roti canai, and to say that it lived up to the hype is an understatement; I wanted to drink that sauce and nearly leapt up to attack when a server came by to clear it away. The accompanying pastry is flaky on the outside and just slightly sticky and dense on the inside - a perfect dipping vessel for the curry sauce. Our mee siam, or the stir-fried rice noodle, was also lovely. Packed with chicken, tofu, AND shrimp, the thin vermicelli noodles were hot and flavorful. We were dismayed when we reached the bottom of this plate and only wished there were more. By others' recommendations, we also got the sizzling bean curd platter, which arrived on a hot cast griddle (heads up: there are two on the menu - one with meat, the other without). Thick, rectangular slabs of tofu were covered with a savory sauce and peppered with a nice medley of vegetables. We liked this well enough - the tofu was extremely soft on the inside, with a deep fried exterior that quickly softened in the sauce. I also noticed it was a dish that populated many other tables around us. Service was warm and efficient throughout our meal and we enjoyed chatting with our friendly waiter. We desperately look for good authentic Malaysian food as it is a rare find. We have been to Banana Leaf countless time in the past. During Covid, dine in service is hard to find. They practice social distancing, and hand sanitizer on each table is plus. We ordered our must have dishes: Fukien fried noodle, Hainan Chicken, soft shell crabs in chili sauce, and Roti Canai. It was amazing that the menu was so extensive and had foods from so many different nationalities (Indian, malay, Thai, Chinese/viet...), but also a bit troubling because I was never quite sure if the food I was getting was what I was expecting: in this case, "authentic" ? Malaysian food. I'm not even sure what that means, but if it really means a combination of all these wonderful foods, then I'm happy with my experience. The price is also very affordable and makes sense to what you pay. The speed of service is also very fast. Cons: I ordered two noodle dishes and while the flavors were okay, one of the noodle dishes tasted significantly more fresher/hotter compared to the other. It made me think one of the noodle dish was just reheated. Another thing is that near the end of eating the dish I felt slightly nauseous. TL;DR: A little pricey for Chinatown, but certainly great Malaysian food. Try some of the fried flat noodles and get the satay if you can afford it. Malaysian cuisine is a rare find here in Houston and Banana Leaf sets itself apart from the typical East Asian spots that populate the rest of Dun Huang Plaza. I was able to try the mixed satay($8.50), Chow Kueh Teow ($9), and Beef Rendang ($14.50) on this occasion, and I would say all three dishes delivered well. The satay was by far some of the best I've had in Houston, and was an example of a simple authentic appetizer done well (albeit at a pretty high price point). The Beef Rendang came as a pretty fair portion of tender beef chunks in a dark curry that had a perfect balance of spice and richness, making it go great with the side of white rice it was paired with. The Chow Kueh Teow itself was pretty standard, as a stir fried flat noodle dish with assorted vegetables and seafood. However, it was served with a side of a very interesting and really concentrated sauce on the side that resembled XO sauce, providing an umami bomb when mixed into the noodles and honestly making the dish go from a 6 to an 8 out of 10 in my book. From seeing countless other dishes come out of the kitchen, I think it'd be safe to order almost anything at this place. Banana Leaf definitely satisfies the craving for Malaysian Food better than any other restaurant I know of, but be prepared to pay a substantial price for that service. 4 stars. read more

Doesn't look like much when you walk past, but my friend and I stumbled upon it while walking around the shopping strip and decided to check it out. We went for the indian paratha which was crispy, thin, and delicious. It came with something on the side similar to Indian daal to dip the paratha in and it was soo yummy! When I told the cashier that I was vegan, he was super helpful in substituting the beef and eggs in the stir fried flat noodles with tofu and veggies which I really appreciated (they even lowered the price to $10 instead of $12)! My family ate the other dishes with meat and said they were really yummy, only small complaint would be that the stir fried flat noodles were a litttleeeee bit more bland and could use some more spices/flavor. Banana Leaf & Mamak have always been competitors, adjacent to each other for the best Malaysian food in the area. However, once Mamak has closed down unexpectedly, we were forced to go to Banana Leaf. I can't say we are impressed. Roti & chicken satay were good. Beef satay was severely overcooked & charred to the point where we could not even chew it. We enjoyed the shrimp curry and calamari, and would order it again. However, portions are so small for the price, relative to Mamak. We ordered the flaming ribs, which boasts a spectacular little flame show when it is being prepared, but a guest opened the door to come inside midway through, and the wind from the outside abruptly stopped the flame before it could even start. Our waiter shrugged and said "next time". We also ordered a pot of tea, and it didn't arrive to our table until after the entire dinner was over (we were charged $1 for this too). Overall, I don't expect very much service in a Chinatown restaurant. But I felt like we had to work overtime to try to flag down our waiter for more napkins, refilling our waters, another serving of rice, and mundane tasks because they were so understaffed and our poor waiter was so curt. Finally -- the entire restaurant is so cramped. The furniture is big & bulky, and you literally have to squeeze yourself in between tables to flag down a waiter or head to the restroom, disrupting every other party while they're enjoying their meal. Even worse, the staff tries to maximize how many guests they can fit. While that is admirable to accommodate as many people as possible, there are 2 tables so close to the front door, cold air rushes in and makes the entire dinner experience terrible for those dining in the winter. In conclusion, overpriced food, subpar service, and disruptive ambience make us miss Mamak more than ever now that they are no longer around. Even though Banana Leaf is essentially a monopoly now, I hope they will still consider these factors to continually improve their guests' dining experience, and perhaps invest in slimmer furniture and a more robust staff to manage their guests in the future. read more

I placed 5 orders for Father's Day Dinner, they said will be ready in 10mins. 40 mins later, I showed up, my order is not even ready, the restaurant is not even packed. Only 3 tables dining. I order the half chicken which comes with 1 hot sauce, because it wasn't enough last time I've ordered, I've asked if I could have an extra one. Whoever over the phone told me sure u just need to tell the person when u pick up your order. But when I asked, the waitress told me, sauce is not free! Everything goes up so it will be $1 for extra sauce. I told her I don't mind paying $1 but the problem is how come I wasn't told that when I asked over the phone when I placed the order?? She said because you should know it's not free! Then come to my Indian pancake order, it's like $7 for the order but when I came home to see this pitiful container of Indian sauce, they didn't even fill half this little container. I respect price gone up everywhere and it's okay that you charge more but at least give customer a reasonable portion for what they've paid for. All in all, shitty waitresses, portion size is a joke. Let me start this off by saying, as a Singaporean, I know how authentic Malaysian and Singapore food tastes like. What we had was mostly disappointing. We were a party of 3 plus a toddler, ordered a Hainanese chicken (half chicken), Hokkien stir fried noodles/rice noodles, beef rendang, combo satay (chicken and beef), snow pea leaf garlic sauté and Malaysian style spareribs. The snow pea leaf garlic sauté was decent, but really pricey. $12, really?! The only reason I ordered it was because they didn't have kang kong belacan and snow pea leaf was in season. The Malaysian style ribs were also alright, can't really go wrong with deep fried food. The satay was good, BY ITSELF. Satay traditionally comes with a Sambal peanut sauce, the sauce that came with this satay tastes NOTHING like it. The hainanese chicken was ok, but not authentic. Hainanese chicken is not supposed to sit in a pool of dark sauce! Also, if I hadn't ask the waitress, they would not have served me the "chicken rice" that is supposed to come together! The waitress referred to the "chicken rice" as the "yellow rice", which became self-explanatory after tasting it. The hokkien stirfry noodles was a huge disappointment. This is one of my favorite dishes in SEAsia, so I was really looking forward to it. There was too much "soy sauce" taste to the noodles, and the worse part? They used UDON NOODLES instead of thick yellow noodles! Did they really think their customers were all undiscerning and wouldn't know the difference?! Beef rendang tasted pretty authentic, and I had quite a few pieces while the rest at the table did not try. Lo and behold, I had food poisoning. Either the coconut milk in this dish is expired, or maybe this dish as been left out for a while and had turned bad? I honestly do not know what the issue was, but I do know that we packed the leftovers and by the time I got home, the beef rendang was rancid. I really wanted to like this place. It's not common to find a restaurant featuring solely Malaysian/Singapore food, but this place was terribly disappointing. Quick, tasty food. Popular, so arrive early or during off-hours. Banana Leaf is located in a strip center just inside the beltway on Bellaire. If you hit Corporate Drive, you have gone too far. The restaurant is so small and popular that it has two locations. The second BL location is close, a short walk away on the north side of Bellaire. Before you arrive, get the Groupon deal. I arrived with some coworkers with a $22 Groupon that cost me $17. Two appetizers and three main courses came to around $52 prior to applying the Groupon. We started with some Indian Roti Canai and pork intestines. The bread was light and tasty. I'm usually not inclined to eat tripe when I have Dim Sum, but the pork intestines dish was very crispy and the onions enhanced the taste. I liked it. Although BL had a lunch menu, my group decided on three dishes to share family-style. We had the Sizzling Malay Bean Curd, Beef Rendang, and the Curry Jumbo Shrimp Casserole. My favorite dish was the Shrimp Casserole. It was almost like a Cioppino stew, but with shrimp only. The sauce is like a thin curry, but is very tasty when ladled by itself over a bowl of rice. Lots of big chunks of vegetables included with large bites of shrimp. The Beef Rendang had a thick, tasty sauce, but there was nothing special about the meat. The bean curd/tofu dish had a delicious sauce and I enjoyed it. One thing I really liked was that the food came out very quickly. My coworker said the food arrives at that speed on busy weekends as well. When you are done with your meal, I like the fact that you have a few choices for dessert in the shopping center before going to your car. We walked to nearby Kung Fu Tea for some tasty green tea slushies. I would like to return sometime and try a different dish. My buddy Vik was not as keen on the idea. Oh Chinatown, the melting pot of Asian cuisines. Tonight's travel brings us to Malaysia. We'd read many excellent reviews of Banana Leaf on Yelp, so we headed there for an early dinner. We arrived and found a much nicer decor than the previous night at Fu Fu Cafe. Banana Leaf is a high tech restaurant. At each table against a wall is a small LCD monitor that shows a slide show of some of their dishes. It's nice to look at while trying to decide what to order. Our waiter was also helpful in suggesting items to order. We read the Yelp reviews and decided to pick some of other Yelper's faves. Our food: 1) chicken fried rice - ($5.95) - good, tasted yummy, the onion could have been cooked more because the raw onion was overpowering. 2) Chow Fun stir fried flat noodles with chicken - ($7.95) - my favorite item of the meal. The noodles were delicious and the flavors were perfect. I'll definitely be back for more. 3) Flaming Spare Ribs - ($10.95) - The presentation of the spare ribs is great. It comes out in foil on a flaming platter, but that's where the good ends and the bad begins. Ugh. Why do people like these? They are small pieces of ribs with bones all over. You don't know what has bones and what doesn't until you bite into it, most of them have bones. It comes with a sweet and tangy sauce that was really quite sickening. I absolutely love most sweet and tangy sauce but this one wasn't pleasant. We didn't even eat 1/2 of it and do not recommend them. Service: Our service was great. Granted it was a Tuesday evening and for a while we were the only table in the whole restaurant. I appreciated how on top of things they were with drink refills, etc... Ambiance: Why don't they have music or something? I am sometimes annoyed by the music in different restaurants, but it's weird when there is none, especially when you are the only people in the whole restaurant. Banana Leaf made the effort to have nice wall coverings, LCD monitors for food display, an attractive website with online to-go order placement, but no music? It was $31 for our meal (3 entrees and 4 canned sodas) but we got the 5% discount for paying with cash. Came here with a group of 8 friends (no reservations here) and surprisingly got a table with ease on a Friday night (which is a feat in Chinatown). It's a small restaurant located on the side with Tofu Village and Gong Cha. We got the roti canai, chicken and beef rendang, tofu, hainan chicken, stir fry flat noodle, and mi goreng. My favorite dishes were the roti canai (the pancake was cooked perfectly fluffy), the chicken rendang, and the hainan chicken (which is Chinese but it was great and the rice too). I had two bowls of that rice. They had ample staff and we had good service during our time there. We have been coming from Austin for the past couple of years, when it's busy hour, you better walk in before the rush, or else be expected that waiting of half hour minimum. The food here are great, manager is friendly, some workers might not seem friendly, but that could be because they got stressed due to inpatient customers, so they also becoming inpatient as well. Most dishes are delicious, some might be bit too salty due to Malaysian style of cooking, but we can still manage with more rice. read more

Banana Leaf is under new management and the food no longer tastes or look the same. The Curry Laksa is now swimming in red chili oil and no longer yellow. Whatever we ordered with curry was swimming in red chili oil. The Indian noodle was in red chili oil. Banana Leaf was our favorite go to place for Malaysian food but sadly, we will no longer go.
