Finally got to try this restaurant after having it on my list for the longest time. I came here during the week and a bit past lunch time so the restaurant was empty. Other than myself, there was only one other guest in the restaurant. A bit disappointed that they didn't offer a stand-alone Beef Rendang dish, but I ordered the Nasi Bakar with Rendang. It was pretty good, but I thought the Beef Rendang was a bit dry to my liking. All the other dishes that I tried were definitely solid. I also have to mention that for an Indonesian restaurant, the dishes come in Texas sized portion (aka generous) compared to some of the other Indonesian restaurants that I had visited in the past. read more

We went here for lunch to try out Indonesian food. I ordered the Bakst bakar (beef meatballs with soy sauce and peanut sauce) and mpek mpek (fish cake with glass noodles and cucumber). They were pretty good. My colleagues ordered other dishes and liked what they ordered. Our waiter was patient and answered our many questions. My wife and I tried this family-run Indonesian restaurant on a Saturday morning. It was both of our first time trying Indonesian food. First, the bad. In spite of arriving and being seated shortly after opening, we waited for over an hour for our food, and this seemed the case for other diners as well. This is in accord with other reviewers' experiences. That's a long time to wait. Ambiance was typical of strip-mall hole in the wall. Restrooms were amazingly clean. On the other hand, the service was friendly and the food was excellent. We ordered the soto ayam (chicken noodle soup) and ayan penyei (smash chicken). The soup was quite flavorful and loaded with veggies, a nice texture and easily a meal - not your typical chicken and noodles soup. The smash chicken dish appeared to be a roasted free-range chicken, fall-off-the-bone tender and with crispy skin and a great flavor, which paired well with the accompanying rice. We were both quite impressed with the food. Overall, great food, but a horribly long wait for it. We'd like to return, but have to plan for the wait or maybe order to go. I'm giving it 4 stars for the excellent food, but should probably knock that down to maybe 3 for the wait. read more

I'm not expert nor knowledgeable with Indonesian cuisine. I was invited by my friend to Warung Indo for her birthday lunch. I came here about 12:30-ish. And the restaurant was pretty packed. Considering the small dining room, our table filled up a third of the space. There was not other open seats at other tables. I ordered the black beef soup (I think it was the name) with other guests at the table. At around 1:30-ish, I got anxious because everyone else got their food but me. I asked the staff about how much longer it would take to get my food. He said 5 minutes more. No way. I'm already late for work. So I told my friend to take my food home. Very disappointed that I didn't get to try the Indonesian food at this famous restaurant. I would be back when it's not too busy. Warung Indo is THE place to go for authentic Indonesian food! Everything we had was delicious: nasi campur, nasi goreng ikan asin, lontong sayur, tempe mendoan. You really can't go wrong here. Everything is perfectly balanced between spicy, savory, and sweet. If you've never had Indonesian food before, I can recommend the nasi campur (literally "mixed rice") as it allows you to try a variety of items, including rendang - a classic Indonesian stewed beef. For the month I have been doing a weekly challenge to try cuisines from different regions of Asia for Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month. This week was Southeast Asia and decided to try Indonesian cuisine. I was wrapping up a work conference across town and drove to Warung Indo. I was immediately greeted by the staff as I walked in. The service was great and was asked if I had any questions? I did not but was a bit conflicted on two choices but choose the Nasi Campur mix rice. Which had steam rice, rendang, tempeh, boiled egg and a vegetable soup. For the starters I went with bakso bakar (meatball skewers) and bakwan (veggie fritters). The food was so good. I did not want it really spicy but just enough to know it is there. The rendang is hearty beef stew with a good blend of spices. The tempeh is combined with flavorful peppers. The boiled egg and vegetable soup were just as flavorful too. The bakso bakar came as a set of 3 but I couldn't help myself and ate one already haha. Good sized meatballs with a great tasting peanut sauce to add on top. The bakwan is crispy but also a nice size and amount for the order. The restaurant ambiance is cozy. It's a family run business with a good amount of seating. At the time of the visit, I was the sole patron but I am sure the restaurant fills up on busier days. I was definitely was stuffed of course because of everything I ordered. The prices are good. The main dishes and soups are under $20 and starters are under $10. Very nice family that is running the restaurant and helpful to teach me what are the dishes on the menu. I did ask about satay on the menu, unfortunately they do not have it. But everything else I ordered was great. I would love to come back. It was a great introduction for me to Indonesian cuisine. read more

Authentic Indonesian food here! It's a small restaurant, but it has warm and friendly staff. The staff treat you like a friend. Love the vibe. I had the lontong sayur, fried rice with chicken, and es campur. The lontong sayur was super good, so flavorful. Portion was perfect too. The fried rice was very tasty. I can only get that flavor from an Indonesian restaurant. The es campur drink has red beans, jackfruit, grass jelly, coconut, condensed milk, cendol, and syrup. Indonesian and Malay food is one of the best culinary secrets not known by most of America- yet. That said Warung Indo easily hits all the marks. The second Indonesian restaurant to hit Sugar Land, the food is delicious and the owners super-friendly and engaging. I'm partial to Soto Ayam, but anything you will try there should be delicious. If you feel lost looking at the menu just ask the owners, they'll steer you to a new palate experience. read more

Great authentic Indonesian. Offers some harder to find dishes beyond bakso and rendang, like soto daging and rawon. Good portions and very tasty.
