The chocolate croissants are my absolute favorite from anywhere in the US. They have so much butter and the chocolate tastes like it's dark so the whole thing isn't overly sweet. The coffee is excellent and comes in a real coffee cup when you eat in the cafe. Make sure to go early- they bake it all fresh and sell out! read more

Stopped in to bandit while spending a day in Birmingham checking out the food scene. It was top on my list and I can say it didn't disappoint. Inside is cute and the perfect amount of space with a few outside seats. The stay was super friendly and kind. We made small talk about my trip and delicious pastries while I ordered and I felt very welcomed. As for the pastries. I picked the pumpkin cheese cake cruffin, triple ginger cookie, snicker doodle cookie, and strawberry poptart. Cruffin was tender and delicious with ample filling. The cookies were the perfect softness with a little chew and a slight crunch on the edge. Absolutely perfect. The strawberry poptart was a little disappointing. It's thick and puffy so you're expecting a filled pastry full of chunky strawberries and fruity delights. Instead you bite in and it's a hallow cave inside about an inch thick of air with a tiny smear of strawberry jam at the bottom. It was so little you almost couldn't even taste it against the buttery pastry itself. Over all 3 out of 4 being home runs I'd absolutely go back. Plus the hospitality was top notch. read more

Had some time to kill early in the morning so came on in to eat. Street parking can be a bit of a pain, lots of one way streets so had to loop around a few times to find a spot. I got the lemon meringue tart, strawberry poptart and ham and cheese croissant. All were good, the ham and cheese croissant was especially good compared to some others in the city, well worth it. The CONECUH SAUSAGE SCONE and EASTABOGA HONEYBUN feature local sausage and local honey respectively. Not to miss as well. The CHOCOLATE CHIP SCONE is a giant sconified version of the popular cookie. I ask if there are any pop tarts available and they said no, what we have is displayed. So you have the option of two things to eat on a Friday at 1pm? So I get the London fog tart and had seen a free coffee advertised with a pastry purchase. I ask if I can get the free coffee and they oblige. But it wasn't going to be offered to me otherwise. My wife and I have gone to the Bandit location downtown as well as the Saturday farmer's market and we've had a great experience at both! The downtown location is beautiful and the service is great, but if you're going to go, go early because they do run out of pastries. I will be going back on my diet from a recent cruise on Monday. As my final meal of sorts, I can choose anything. I chose Bandit Bakery. That should be enough for everyone to understand just how good this place is. I ordered a Almond Croissant, Plane Croisant with Jam and two Linzan Tarts. One items better than the other with the highest marks for the Almond Croissant. Now this should score a 5 star however, I gave it a 4 star due to service. The store opens at 8:00 AM. I got there at 7:50 AM and waited in my car. The front door was open so at 07:58 AM I asked if I could come in out of the cold and stand to the side. I was told "NO" not while it is being set up. I left with the intention of just skipping it. There is a nice way to say things and a not so nice way. I stayed and was waved in by someone one else. A employee from the Restuarant next door was trying to gain an item with a Store Gift Card. It would not process, and we were waiting for just a minute or two but it was frustrating. Let the employee have their pastry. So when the card did not work and the employee had no money, I offered to buy the item for her. I will come back because I love the product. However, a much better bedside manner would be appreciated. Guest notice and all you have to be is nice about it. You are there for the guest, the guest are not there for you. Try this place. I was shopping for a house in the Glen Isis neighborhood in the 90's. The owner had a bulleted list of all the homes selling points. Amongst them was the fact that it was a little over a block from a newly opened, family run, hole in the wall casual Italian restaurant. That was, and almost 25 years later still is Giuseppe's Cafe. I thought it odd to add that to the homes selling points, and bought the house on it's own merits nonetheless. I sold the house several years later and had come to appreciate the restaurant as much as the previous owner and listed it on my own flyer too! All that to say that after living downtown for 12 years I'm very pleased to have this perfectionist owned bakery within a block of home. I wouldn't hesitate to list as an asset should I vacate. Closer to the truth is that I love this little bakery so much that I would have to solemnly consider the loss of this place in my decision to move away from the Loft District. Absolutely LOVE everything I've had here- except the scones, but then again I have not once in my life had a scone that I could think of as more than a failed biscuit. The sourdough, baguette, carrot cake, almond/chocolate/Ham & Cheese croissant's are all produced by someone who does this because they love making the best and won't settle for a smidgen less than that. I've never had the pleasure of a bona fide baked in France croissant, but I could hardly imagine any improvement over these. As I write this I am certain there are still shards of croissant in my bed, beard, car and office. They serve authentic true to the european standard size and quality espressos in a bright and minimally adorned cafe with a little outdoor seating as well. You should stop by on a morning when you can rest a minute and enjoy the sounds classic jazz mingle with the bump & hiss of espresso being made, street sounds and the excitement of patrons seeing all those pastries to choose from as the enter the door. If you are lucky it will be on a day when staff keep the front door propped open to let the breeze in. Damn! I need to try the brioche. Why haven't I yet? read more

We would not return, and we would not recommend it. We were in the area and decided to try Bandit out....turned out to be an unsatisfying decision. They have their pastries on display at the counter, and they look beautiful! We ordered a cheddar and conecuh scone. They asked us if we would like for it to be heated, and we responded yes. When we got the scone, we were excited to try it and immediately took a bite. It was stone cold. It's not the room temperature kind of cold. It's the "this is not freshly made today but actually been refrigerated for who knows how long" kind of cold. We asked them to reheat it. They gave it back to us in a minute.....and guess what, the middle is still cold. So, not wanting to be difficult customers, we nibbled the outside that's lukewarm and tossed the rest. I do feel like there is a definite lack of customer service. If this was my place and I found out I gave my customer a cold pastry because they asked me to reheat it, I would at a minimum apologize and say I would be happy to heat it again. There was no acknowledgment of any sort. I would also definitely check with them to make sure it's good the second time around. There was no follow-up of any sort. They request the dishes to be placed on their counter when the customers are done. So we did and they saw we did not finish the scone. They did not care enough to inquire as to if there was an issue. Overall there were three opportunities for them to check on their customers and ensure return visits. They did not seize any of the opportunities. This place might actually be heaven on earth. I didn't realize they closed so early and i was going to do a preorder but it's hard to get in the city before 2. So i stopped in on a Saturday to get what i could. They had everything i needed still in stock less than an hour before they closed. And after tasting them i quite honestly have no idea why. I got what i needed for my special order but didn't try those as they were for a friend. I split the lemon meringue and a ginger cookie while still in shop. It was love at first bite.
