I was specifically super excited to try their seasonal matcha special, which was made with horchata (also from Salud!) and strawberries, if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, we walked in only to find they were out of the supplies needed to make the drink. :( I was caught off guard and didn't know what to order, but the barista recommended a latte with maple flavor so I went with that. The interior was clean and spacious and had a relaxed and calm but energetic feeling to it. Good place to hang out or work quietly. There's a self-service area to spruce up or fix your drink or grab lids or stir sticks. Service was nice and my drink came out quickly. It was pretty good but not really the "right" drink for me. I like my stuff on the sweet side and this was much more balanced and coffee-forward. That said, it held its own against my sugar-craving taste buds and I drank most of it, which is usually the hallmark of good brew, lol. I don't really blame them because I blanked on what to order and just went with what was suggested. It's probably a great suggestion for lots of other folks! I came here to catch up with a great friend from high school! The space is the old Revelator Coffee shop (RIP, what happened to them?) but certainly lives up to their predecessor! The vibe here is different from the one out in Cahaba Heights, much more industrial chic. I'm on a quest to try every single local coffee shop in Birmingham, and I am never disappointed. I ordered from their special winter menu the iced minty matcha, which was fantastic. The mint was not too overpowering, super tasty. This is such a great spot! Definitely a more social coffee shop, from what I gathered on this Saturday morning. I always dread parking down here and then never have trouble. It's right across from the Alabama Theatre, so if there's nothing going on there, street parking is a breeze. read more

Very cute place! I tried the strawberry horchata matcha, the basil lavender latte, and the blueberry lemon tonic espresso. I thought the matcha and basil lavender were both good, but nothing spectacular. The blueberry lemon tonic espresso curdled because of the lemon cold foam. It also tasted similar to medicine and was very acidic. I usually love a tonic espresso, but this one was not very good. Service quick and friendly. read more

My son recommended this spot to meet. There is sufficient parking on both sides of the street, in addition to the parking lot right beside the coffee shop. However, please note that this parking lot is a PAID parking lot 24/7. There are signs saying as much, but wanted to reiterate it as it could be an expensive lesson to learn. I arrived at the coffee shop about 9am when there was only one other customer there. As the morning progressed, it became quite busy, with most of the seating taken. I typically get the dark roast drip but they only had light or medium today. Their medium roast was still delicious. Lots of students and folks with their dogs stopping in. The vibe here is great. You can tell this is a popular spot! First off the location was so cute with a public parking lot right next to it. Super easy and convenient! First time coming to this location and love what they have done with the space. The natural light from the large windows mixed with the stylish decor make it a perfect place for grabbing a coffee with friends or getting some work done. I was greeted by the friendly staff upon walking in and given suggestions on what to order. I went with one of their summer specials, the captain's cold foam latte, and my husband got a matcha latte. We both agreed they weren't our favorite drinks from Cala but we just wanted to try something new. You can tell Cala tells about the quality of their coffee. Had great experiences every time. The cold brew is fantastic, it's very hard to find a good roaster, and sometimes even more difficult to find a good roaster that makes a good cold brew. These guys have it covered. Plus , one afternoon I ran a little short on time for my walk over from the hotel arriving about 3 minutes after closing time. Finally got around to trying Cala's downtown location after having their coffee at the Pepper Place farmer's market. The atmosphere was beautiful and there was plenty of seating (even though it was busy!). Service was fast and they have a good assortment of seasonal beverages--I'm usually not one for cold or sweet drinks, but the Yam! That's Good (cold brew with sweet potato cold foam) was fantastic. They also have tacos from Ladybird and pastries from Last Call. read more

My go-to is their iced maple brown sugar latte. It is perfect. The right proportion of espresso to milk to sweetness. So well balanced. We typically order online, and the pick-up is seamless. The baristas are always friendly. There are plenty of tables inside to relax or complete some work. Definitely recommend! read more

Atmosphere: Cala Coffee's Downtown location is surprisingly spacious and has a beautiful interior. We went on a cloudy day, and the soft, dim light made the entire cafe feel nice and cozy. Service: Our barista was friendly and happily provided us with recommendations. Our drinks also came out quickly! Food: We ordered a Grinchy Matcha Latte, a Chai Latte, and a Cappuccino. The Grinchy Matcha, which is a matcha latte with cinnamon and peppermint syrups, was a pleasant surprise! It tasted mainly like peppermint with hints of matcha. It was very sweet but satisfying. The Chai Latte wasn't too sweet and had a warm hint of spice to it. Lastly, the Cappuccino was fresh, frothy, and the espresso tasted nice. Overall: We've previously checked out Cala Coffee's Cahaba Heights location and were instant fans. The Downtown location, though not as convenient in terms of parking, was just as lovely and had great quality drinks. Such a lovely coffee shop in downtown!! Caught up with one of my best friends here and couldn't believe how late to the game I've been for Cala. I'm not a big matcha girl but this latte with the added strawberry was super good. I'm also not the biggest pastry fan but the croissant was perfectly buttery and flakey, and not at all too sweet! The baristas were just as lovely as the food and had a smile on their faces the entire time we were in the cafe. I came in on Nov 18. I hate leaving bad reviews, especially when it comes to local businesses, but this shop did not impress me. The coffee was too acidic for my taste, and the service was not friendly or welcoming. I came in before 3:30 with my husband's family. They are not from the US, but we were all very excited to try a local coffee shop. His uncle requested a single espresso shot served in an espresso cup instead of the cheap paper cup. At first they told us no, that they were getting ready to close, but then agreed to let us have it if we drank it really quickly so they could wash everything. I can't remember exactly what was said, but it was very rude and even more awkward to translate to him. Of course it's not going to take him forever to drink a tiny espresso, and why is it that big of an ordeal to wash his cup? It was a little embarrassing for the service to not only be rude, but for the local product to be mediocre as well. read more
