I've been to the Railroad location before, but I was in the area and decided to try Red Cat Coffeehouse. Street parking was pretty easy to find, which was a plus. The space had a lot of people inside--many working or meeting up--so it had a lively, productive vibe. I ordered the superfood smoothie, which tasted good once I got it, but it did take a little while to come out. After ordering, I sat down for a minute before stepping out to the restroom, and it still wasn't ready for a bit when I returned. The Red Cat tent is my FIRST stop at Pepper Place, always. One iced coffee, splash of almond milk, please. Today, I walked here with the pup and ordered a Superfood Smoothie, which I'd never had here before. It was good... too good. I always wonder what all these places are putting into smoothies. Because I know spinach and apple doesn't taste like that when I blend it up. I'm sure it's... sugar, unfortunately. lol. Red Cat has a great vibe, very homey. Great place to pick up a black cup of joe, a pastry, a cappuccino, a smoothie, etc... The study space is great, not every table has access to plugs, but there are certainly come along the wall if you get here early enough. This place is always filled with professionals young and old doing work at their computers. The walls are lined with posters for upcoming events all over town. It's not often you come to a place that really feels like a hub of community. What is it that Nicole Kidman says in the AMC intro? "We come to this place for magic..." I love the atmosphere here, and the service is always good, although the baristas aren't as chatty as some other spots around town. They always have a pop-up tent on the opposite side of the square for Pepper Place during the Farmers' Market on Saturdays, so you can get some coffees without having to come inside. The coffee is 5 stars. I am a black coffe drinker. But I saw the list of those tasty lattes and thought, hmmm... after chatting with the cashier who graciously walked me through the menu, I decided on the Abyssinian with sugar free vanilla, extra cinnamon and an extra shot. It was one of the best cups of coffee I've had in years. I was shocked. It was strong, but not bitter, spiced but not sweet. Part of my four star rating was that it could have been a bit warmer. I love the cozy bookstore vibe I get from Red Cat's Pepper Place location. The brick walls and huge windows really capture a quaint city vibe. The shop is located in a hub of other businesses and there's a big parking lot beside the building, so it's not hard to snag a spot and get settled. I like to sit outside when the weather's nice. There's plent of indoor seating and my fav spot is on the couches. As a remote worker I also appreciate all of the electrical outlets. I prefer tea so I can't speak on the coffee but I did enjoy their seasonal lavender lemonade. They also have a nice food menu, but some dishes appear to be made in the microwave so be sure everything is heated through before digging in. I got the iced latte with hazelnut (I forgot the name) which was alright nothing too special with loads of ice. You could taste a slight hint of hazelnut but nothing that would overpower the coffee. I walked in planning on settling down to buy ice coffee, food and work for a bit. First, I went to the register, asked the gentlemen that rushed to the register to see me "where to find the restroom?". He points and says "down the hall" I looked confused - there is no hall in the coffee space and I asked to clarify "oh, through the door down the hall?" I didn't see a hallway... The Red Cat was absolutely purrfect. No, but seriously, my boyfriend and I loved it. I've lived in Atlanta and Athens, GA (both places known for fun funky coffee shops) and the Red Cat was right up there with one of the coolest coffee joints I've been to. We tried two of their fun speciality lattes: the Burmese and the Bengal. Both were exceptional, but I was a bit partial to the Bengal because of the chocolate component. Both were super reasonably priced as well-- way better than most big city coffee shops. The interior was fun and adorned with a ton of cool flags, canvases, books, etc. Most of the clientele seemed to be younger student types, but there were a few older people enjoying their coffees as well. All in all I was super impressed. The Red Cat really seems to be a Birmingham gem. I'd highly recommend if you're in the city on the look out for good coffee. read more

We stopped at this coffee shop in Birmingham on our way to Memphis. My sister and I got coffee (cafe au lait and an chicory latte) and my son had a hot chocolate. We all loved our drinks. The coffee was fresh and flavorful and the hot chocolate wasn't overly sweet. It must have been our lucky day because it was cookie happy hour or something - all the cookies were half off so we got 3 chocolate chip cookies which we delicious - warm, soft, sweet and melt in your mouth buttery. The decor is eclectic and fun and the staff are really friendly and fun! It typically comes with three pumps of vanilla syrup but I got it with just one pump and it tasted perfectly sweet enough. I loved how much cinnamon was in it, that flavor really shined through. I love this coffee shop! I have been coming here for years and the staff members are always so kind. There is a lot of seating inside and outside, so it is perfect if you want somewhere to study/hang out with friends. They also have a lot of outlets so it is easy to find a seat where you can charge your laptop. (Fair warning: the line does get long on Saturday mornings because the farmers market is right outside). The espresso and cold brew here are great. I am not a fan of sweet coffee, so I prefer a plain latte with almond milk, but my friends all love their flavored lattes and matcha. An oasis in an otherwise (mostly) commercial neighborhood. I ordered a Cafe A Lait. For breakfast I was told the croissant sandwiches cant be beat. I ordered a Turkey Sausage, Egg and cheese. No mention of the panini press they put in the sandwich which TOOK IT OVER THE TOP. It was delicious, filling and craveable. The coffee was very good, how bad could it be right? This is my go to coffee shop, I love to stop here after I finish at Pepper Place market. I have tried the smoothies and the chai tea lattes. The iced chai tea latte is my go to. This coffee shop normally has a long line but they move very fast and it's never a long wait for your order. I have to try the food the next time I visit bc it looks pretty good. There is plenty of parking options, street parking or the parking lot. The prices for the coffee are reasonable. Here's why I go to Red Cat Coffee at Pepper Place when I roll through Birmingham: 1) drink: The Burmese iced latte has a good balance of vanilla and coconut without being overly sweet. I like my stuff sweet, but not sugary, and this is a repeat order for me. That said, if you're getting a specialty espresso beverage, expect to pay around $6 with tax. I will say that if you leave a tip, it's gonna run you close to or over $7. (Note: I don't know if the baristas are getting paid a living wage, but if they aren't in this economy, that's a shame.) Quite honestly, I am not trying to pay $7 for a drink that will ultimately be diluted by ice, but if Red Cat steps into the light that is coffee ice cubes, I will mourn no m 2) service: on the whole, most of the time I have had good service across different times and different employees. I have never felt unwelcome or disrespected. 3) lost and found, at your own risk: I was in there recently when I noticed a fellow patron had left quite an expensive tech item behind. I shared this info with an employee who promised to retrieve the item. Two hours went by, and this employee did everything but go get the item. Perhaps they were having a bad day and forgot. When I left, I alerted another employee who promptly went and got it for safe keeping. That said, two things: First, we as customers need to be mindful of our belongings and not rely on the goodwill of others. Second, if we do choose to report something missing, I hope that employees will respond more speedily and demonstrate more concern the next time they are approached. 4) ambiance: lots of light, different types of tables for in-person meetings or working by yourself. If you beat the afternoon rush, you'll have a good chance of getting a table near an outlet. That said, come charged up in case you plan to sit outside at a table with an umbrella or you choose a couch. Compared to other coffee shops in the area (cough, mountain brook coffee shops, looking at you, cough), this location gets a diverse crowd coming in. I like to see that people of all different ages and cultures patronize this place. 5) parking: lots of free parking at pepper place. This motivates me to come here over other coffee shops near/in downtown. 6) bonus: they close at six, but occasionally they close early for an event. It would be great if they would tell patrons that when they arrive. I get sad when I come and I settle in only to find out I've got to leave an hour early. First world irritant, but easily fixed, I should think. All in all, that Burmese latte is tasty and I'll certainly be back. read more

My family and I were downtown yesterday and my husband just had to stop at The Red Cat. He hasn't had any coffee from here in months so he had to take advantage of us being so close. I have never been to The Red Cat so I let him order for me. He bought me a hot chocolate and omelette. The hot chocolate was delicious. The omelette was good, but it could have had more seasonings.
