Addendum to previous review: As if my experience with Banfield wasn't bad enough.. When I contacted the wellness plan to let them know my girl had passed away I was informed that I would have to continue paying until December! The one time in 13 years that I needed an emergent appointment and they couldn't / wouldn't see her. I have no recollection of, or a copy of any contract. I couldn't make this up if I tried. For thirteen years, my baby girl has been on a Banfield wellness plan. For thirteen year, she has had comprehensive exams, vaccines, and was seen by a banfield vet for various issues. However, what has me perplexed is during the many annual tests and examinations my baby girl has had, that not one of these visits prepared me for what I've been through this last year. While my baby girl was left in the care of my daughter, one comprehensive exam turned into my Macy being taken to an emergency vet hospital because; accourding the the vet, she was diagnosed as being in diabetes acidosis. How, and when? There was nothing out of the ordinary that I could see with my own eyes to Macy's behavior, besides the fact that she was drinking a large amount of water. To keep this post short, since that particular day, I've had to put out an extensive amount of money for her emergency diabetic care which I believe that I should have received medical notification if Macy was anywhere close to being pre-diabetic during all of the countless exams, labs, and visits with Banfield for the past twelve years of her life. Not one word from a Banfield vet. I just canceled Macy's Banfield Wellness plan and will never use it again. I am highly dissappointed that I've allowed myself to trust Banfield with my pet. Never again. Their pet Wellness plans are only good for vaccines; and nothing more. read more

My dog had a full exam with vaccines. I found out a month later that my boarding place required a flu shot. Banfield charged me a $120 to administer a $40 shot. This was a tech appointment. Then they told me I would have to come back for a booster and pay the whole $160 again! Terrible and I will never go back. read more

This location never picks up when we call on week days. It has been a couple months of trying. The time we called the front of pet smart their response was they were closed because they were "dealing with a situation and were not going to open that day." I could see that happening once, but I haven't gotten a human in months. We had to find another vet. read more

If you love your pet and live in the Gainesville area, cancel your wellness plan with Banfield and find a new vet. This location is horrible, and from what we have experienced in trying to get appointments, Manassas isn't much better. Every time I have called to make an urgent care appointment for my dog, I have been told "your dog needs to been right away; we can fit her in sometime next week or the week after." Follow up appointments aren't any better. I brought my dog to the local emergency veterinarian because she had been coughing up a bit of blood and Banfield couldn't fit her in for over a week out. When we were told that there were masses in my dogs lungs and she needed to follow up with her regular vet as soon as possible, Banfield was ready to schedule her almost ten days later. It has been this way every single time we have tried to schedule a visit that isn't part of the annual check-up (and even those need to be scheduled weeks in advance). What is the point of an animal hospital if they never have urgent care appointments open? If a dog needs to be seen right away, a week later doesn't cut it. I wish we had canceled our wellness plan as soon as we moved to the area and had our first experience with Banfield of Gainesville, but unfortunately we didn't and instead have been paying for urgent care visits with other local veterinarians and continuing to pay a monthly fee to this place until my pet's plan runs out. read more

Took my dog for routine treatment and they asked if I wanted additional services like nail clipped and/or any other services. I asked for a nail grind and sanitary clip to take the hair off the paws and butt. The nails were grinder from what I could tell, paws half clipped, but the sanitary clip was not done as there is still lots of hair. I was charged nearly $80.00 for what? I paid $80.00 for the most expensive butt and foot clip in history but seems like the work was not fully completed read more

Dr. Mesfin Tsadiku is very incompetent, unprofessional that takes no accountability for his actions. Not only he was late for an appointment he didn't check my cat what it was brought in for, blaming front desk for not inputting incorrect notes. After chatting with the front desk who then told me that the notes are there. Which leaves me to think that "Dr" didn't read the notes before seeing my cat. On top of that he said that he doesn't have time to check him for what I brought him in for and make another appointment. While he was chatting with me about my cat he rudely interrupted the conversation and spoke to another patient about his animal who was standing behind me. I have never experienced this level of unprofessionalism. The ladies were very apologetic for his behavior except him. Never once he came out to apologize and haven't owned up to his mistake, opposite he was quick to blame a lady for inputting wrong notes. If you don't have a choice and stuck with Banfield then DO NOT SEE Dr. Mesfin Tsadiku at this location. I'm paying for 2 kittens and won't renew my plan! FYI I had another cat before who passed under the care of this doctor. When I brought him in for a concern that he is not eating and losing weight, this doctor told me opposite! He said that he is not losing weight only after couple of months he admitted that something is wrong with him and after multiple test couldn't pin point what it was and didn't recommend anything. I have a wellness plan for my cats and they NEVER EVER answer the phone. I literally had to drive out there and make an appointment in person. I don't understand why they never answer the phone it makes no sense for a business to not answer their phones. Annette - a veterinary tech student was working today at the front desk and was EXTREMELY rude to me. First, I requested the same document 3 times and it was supposed to be faxed to my dog new vet clinic. It was never done. Called early requesting documents again, gentleman on the phone was super nice and said it would be ready by 10 am. Come in and Annette was at the front desk. I introduced myself and she gave me an attitude saying that she could not print everything. Then she printed the wrong documents and I explained to her that she gave me the wrong information (wrong person information). And I told her again what I needed. She printed a new information- 4 times the same and now incomplete paperwork. She would not make a simple call to request documents to be transferred to this location saying she could not do it. Then, I noticed that there was a wrong information in my pet medical records and explained to her that. She said to call the corporate office. When I asked her the phone number she gave the WRONG phone number. I came back and asked a new number bc it was wrong and she started yelling at me... just bc I told her I need the correct phone number!!! Then, she started saying that she was sorry for my "miserable life" and that I was rude, that if I was not happy it was not her problem... WOW!! I asked to talk to the manager and she said yelling and laughing "Guess what, I'm the manager today!" I told her attitude was very sad and rude as a manager and walked way, while she was still talking shit about me to other employees ... again WOW ANNETTE should not be dealing with customers, neither pets bc if she treats clients like that you can only imagine how she treats your pet when you're not around. I have been a client of PetSmart and Banfield for over 15 years and this was the first time I was so mistreated by a Banfield vet tech student. Coming back tomorrow to talk to the actual manager and regional manager ... I will not be quiet about her attitude!! read more

I've been going here for years and have seen all the drs, they're always empathetic and work with me in price as much as possible. Banfield hospital for pets is nothing more than a good way to take money from you without providing commensurate amounts of services. In short, it's highway robbery and I'm not quite sure how the company has remained in business so long and pulled the wool over pet owner's eyes for so many years. Beware of setting up recurring payments with Banfield as they will automatically send you account to collections without contacting you first when your card expires. They claim they're not obligated to warn you when your card expires and that they "only would do it out of courtesy" because allegedly, in the fine print they say, there is a clause that states that. I highly recommend reconsidering using Banfield for your pet care. Just think, regular pet medical needs amount to far less than what Banfield charges. Moreover, when you use a private vet, you are guaranteed to see the same vet, rather than a new one each time. That type of relationship makes the quality of the pet care better, just as seeing the same doctor would. Please pass this on to your pet owning friends and family. read more

I'n a regular at Banfield. With two cats and new puppy, it's convenient and they're everywhere. It's nice because my fiance and I travel a lot so we can take them to anywhere that there is one. However, this experience was the WORST I've had. My cat had been sneezing so I wanted her to be seen just to make sure that it wasn't serious. I didn't have an appointment and the next appointment they could get me was two weeks from then or I could come and be a walk-in. I chose the latter. 2 hours later, they told me that I would be seen within the next couple minutes. I had been VERY patient so far so what's 15 more minutes? However, it took another hour. We have used Banfield for as long as we have had our animals. We started in Reston and then moved to Gainesville. The Gainesville office started off well but then has progressively become worse. I understand that the area has become more congested but the office should account for that. I will take ownership of our mistake in not paying full attention to our dogs vaccinations but we pay monthly for the comprehensive exams every 6 months. They did not inform us that two of her vaccinations would not be administered and we did not receive notifications from them that her vaccines were overdue...just that she needed another comprehensive less than 2 months after getting one. We can fix that, not necessarily a deal breaker but frustrating as this seems to be a common occurrence lately of records not being correct. Today I went at 7:30am to ask if, due to the miscommunication and the fact that she needed to be boarded, if they could see her to administer vaccines. This is a very short process. I was first told I could do drop off and then told they couldn't see her at all because they were full. I am trying to be understanding that they see a lot of patients but the amount of time they sat there giving me the run around about appointments was enough time to give my dog her vaccines. Also, I was told they needed to save the drop off spots for dogs that are actually sick. I also understand that but if I am there, and there aren't any sick dogs, why not administered the vaccines. Then suddenly an appointment became available at noon which the receptionist let me know the doctor would be very angry with her that she scheduled it at the time just before lunch. I don't know what vets you have that would be angry to take care of an animal for 5 minutes but I don't want them working on my dogs. We have tried to be exceptionally patient with rudeness and the staff changes that seem to be constant and some Doctors who don't really seem that invested in our furry children, and while today was a mistake on our end it was also the behavior that has sent me over the edge. We will not be returning to the Banfield in Gainesville any longer as the issues just continue to stack up. read more

I have taken both of my rescue dogs to the Banfield in Gainesville for preventive care and when they both were sick. Dr. Mesfin Tsadiku was so patient with them especially our first rescue who came from a not so good situation. Dr. Mesfin Tsadiku took his time with her and made sure to stay within her comfort level due to this she has never had a bad visit and is always excited to go. Dr. Mesfin Tsadiku never once made me feel like I was overreacting when I would call in and mention things I noticed. I once called a few hours before closing because I noticed she was acting very lethargic Dr. Mesfin Tsadiku told me to bring her in and he would immediately see her so that's exactly what we did. He could immediately tell something was different with her just like I did. Dr. Mesfin Tsadiku has taken care of my fur babies as if they were his own. I trust him to do the best for my fur babies and he has helped me keep them both happy and healthy. read more

Dr. Sharma is great with my dogs. Friendly and knowledgable. Their one and only vet! I also appreciate the ladies at Banfield doing next day follow up calls. Minus one star Bc they'd try to sell me the same thing I purchased already for one dog that is still good for my other dog to use as well. On a side note, for the grooming dept. and the doggy day camp or which ever they call it. NOT recommended at all. All dogs are together in one big room, just does not seem very sanitary to me. I'd hate to leave my dogs there and bring ticks and fleas home with them. On another note The girls that watch over the 10+ dogs do not look very happy and seem miserable to be there. read more

I bring all of my dogs to this location. The doctors and CSMs remember them each time showing me that they take the time to look over their charts before each visit. The ladies at the front desk take the time to talk to me about each of my pets and care for them as if they were their own. I love having this pet hospital close to my home so I can get my fur babies the best care possible as quickly as possible. read more

After relocating to the area a couple years ago, I've been taking my two dogs to this Banfield location in Gainesville, VA. Although some doctors have come and gone, we're happy to see that our *favorite* vet - Dr. Mesfin - is still with the practice:) We have a special-needs dog with a long list of health issues - he requires extra attention/medications. Dr. Mesfin always takes the time to listen to our concerns and answer any of our questions. We never get the feeling he's in a rush and we can tell that he sincerely cares about our pets and his profession. We highly recommend Dr. Mesfin at Banfield Gainesville, VA! read more

Worst place to bring your pets! Let me start by saying that the only thing this facility is good for is preventative care (vaccinations, dental, etc.) If your pet is not feeling well, I'm begging you not to take them here if you really consider them a part of your family, and here's why: 8 years ago I rescued my kitten (Mindy) from the Petsmart that the Banfield is located in. Of course I decided to choose that vet for all of her vaccinations and check ups and such, since it's so close to my home. When I first got Mindy, she was only 6 months old but became very sick. She would throw up often, have diarrhea, and at one point she has a white spot on her eye which led me to believe she was going blind. I took kitty to the vet, and almost immediately the vet told me that these are all signs of FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) or FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). She did some blood work, X-rays, and couldn't figure out why my little kitten was feeling sick. She finally told me that she's almost certain that Mindy has FIV, and that they're going to test for it. But even if it comes out negative, that doesn't mean for certain that she doesn't have it. That testing seems absolutely unnecessary to me but the vet did it anyways, it came out negative, and she told me "your kitten has FIV. I'm sorry but cats with that virus do not live a long normal life. If she continues to feel sick, I'm scared she won't live long". I was only 16 years old at the time, this was my first cat ever, so I broke down crying. I went home and did all the research in the world on FIP and FIV, and couldn't figure out why the vet would diagnose her with that!! Anyways, fast forward 8 and a half years later and my kitty is now fairly healthy and happy! The vet lied right to our faces, just because she couldn't figure out a diagnosis for Mindy. Not only that, but Mindy went to the vet SO many times as a kitten that now she's deathly afraid when we put her in the car. She's already so sensitive to a lot of things, but at the vet they constantly did rectal temperatures on her, and god knows what, just to test and find out what she has. Some days I would bring her back from the vet when she was a kitten and she'd be all wet, and smell really bad. It made me so uncomfortable to not know what they were doing to her in the back. BUT THERE'S MORE. Recently, Mindy has started to throw up again, maybe 3-4 times a day. She's playing and eating and running around, but I couldn't figure out for the life of me why she kept vomiting. I assumed it was because she ate something she wasn't supposed to and it was lodged in her intestines, which I did relay to the vet. I told her that doing an X-ray would be her best bet. Did she listen? NO. She told me they should rule out things in her kidneys and pancreas first, so the vet (Dr. Geller) decided to have Mindy dropped off and do some blood work. Everything came back negative (including the FIV test.. go figure) just like I predicted. Let me just say that we spent practically $300 on this appointment alone. This place is SUPER expensive, and doesn't even offer a health insurance plan for sick pets. Anyways, Mindy kept vomiting so the vet finally decided to get the xray done. Results showed that she was very constipated and she assumed she's vomiting because she feels uncomfortable. It seemed like a fair diagnosis so I believed her. They gave her stool softener medication, injected her with a liquid to hydrate the lining of her organs, and then asked me to feed her a prescription diet. (PS: do not ask the staff at the desk about any questions regarding medication because they have no idea what they're talking about). Anyways, a few days had passed. Mindy was taking her meds, eating the prescription food, BUT STILL VOMITING. Clearly the vet did not diagnose her correctly. I gave Dr. Geller a call and she just kept telling me that she's confused, there's no more tests they can do to figure out what's wrong besides an ultrasound. Ultrasounds at Banfield are over $400 which is ridiculous. She clearly did not have the knowledge or training to diagnose my cat correctly, and all she wanted was our money. Our total at Banfield when all was said and done was $900!!!! We paid that ridiculous amount even though they MISDIAGNOSED her! I told myself I'm never taking Mindy to Banfield again. I ended up emailing a vet office in Herndon about Mindy's symptoms and they diagnosed her correctly IN 10 MINUTES. WITHOUT EVEN MAKING AN APPOINTMENT. They told me this sounds like IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). This would explain the constipation, constant vomiting, but Mindy still acting like her normal self). IBD is pretty common in cats, and the fact that the vet did not even bring up that disappointed me. Do yourself a favor and don't go here. The staff is money hungry, overcharges, and probably tortures your pet when you drop them off read more

I've been taking my 4 cats to Banfield for almost 5 years. I have always had great experiences at the gainesville location until recently. Longer wait times and staff who seemed like I was bothering them when I asked a question. Dr.Mesfin is great and I wish I could have seen him today. However, today I called to see if I could bring in my cat who's hasn't eaten in 4 days to get blood work done so they can see if anything is wrong with her. Banfield advertises that they do "screenings for early signs of illness". The lady who answered the phone told me that my cat has an emergency and to take her to the emergency vet. I explained I wanted her blood work/screening done before taking the emergency route. She told me they could not see me at all because I did not have an appointment and the doctors were too busy. I pay over $100/mo for all my cats and I was appalled the way she spoke to me telling me I could not be seen, I even offered to wait until closing time. I understand Banfield is not emergency but if they have the tools to help my cat that I pay for monthly, we should be helped in short notice and without attitude. That is why we paying customers choose Banfield for the services they do offer and it's convenience. I ended up bringing my cat to Banfield Manassas. We waited less than 10 minutes for a room and she's currently waiting for her blood work to come back. The staff here have been so helpful and caring. Gainesville used to be A LOT better, but 2 years ago it changed and the quality of care is not what it used to be. I will miss Dr. Mesfin, but I will no longer be going to Gainesville. read more

I highly recommend this Banfiled location and my dog really loves to see the vet Dr.Dasari, he also loves my pet and he is very knowledgeable , passionate and honest with his treatment plans for what P needs and he never tried to order battery of tests to hurt my wallet . He saved my dog-Wolfie by removing three big pieces of part of couch cover from his stomach, intestines and it took about 4 hours to finish his surgery and he stayed until 10 PM that night , which I think a heck of customer service . His diagnosis was spot on since we were not sure what could have caused my dog to loose 10 pounds in 2wks, so dehydrated, vomiting a lot when we came back vacation and he is 10 yrs old and he is not a puppy to chew things up . I am very pleased with skills, expertise and overall services provided by this location and if it were not for Dr.Dasari , my pet would have probably not alive today . So, take my word for this vet for all your pets needs . read more

While I think the doctors at Banfield are caring and well intended, I also think that they aren't equipped to handle more complex health issues. They wait too long to encourage outside referrals to specialists. Further, I truly believe that the constant turn-over and approach that pets can see whoever is available simply is not acceptable for complex health issues. When pets have a chronic illness, they should be handled by the same doctor. Perhaps if there had been some consistency in care, I wouldn't have been told that my pet was improving with her tests almost within the normal range only to have her pass away in the middle of the night only 36 hours later. They are absolutely fine for routine care. If your pet is truly sick, go to a specialist. read more

This is about Banfield, all about the extra charge. I went in with my dogs Saturday for a checkup, was told to leave them, sick dogs come first. Ok I thought good deal. Spoke to vet later walked me through an issue he thought one dog would have based on tests. Sure enough it happened, I called Monday and asked to bring her in. They told me no appointments until Wednesday but I could drop her off for an extra charge. I cancelled my plan and went in to pick up records, they handed them to me after they looked through them and threw away a page. Could carless I was cancelling. Just wanted the up charge. read more

I've been a customer for a little over a year. I purchased a pet plan when my dog was in good health. Now he's on anti seizure medicine. Which was prescribed by a Doctor here. I called because my dog is having problems on his medicine and was told the doctor would call me back. I did NOT get a call back from the Doctor or a staff member. I feel ignored and doubting I will ever get a call back from them. I will not be returning or renewing my pet plan. I intend on taking my dog to a real vet who truly cares about him. I believe banifield sells you a generic pet plan to keep getting money from you while tacking on other expenses. The doctor on duty did not seem to want to listen to me but just wanted to hand out medicine like a cure. And believe me it's not. I believe it's caused my dog more harm than good. I brought my chinese crested powder puff in to be checked[8/31/2014].. When I would pet him my hands would itch[very badly] then white spots that would turn into little circles. Banfield told me it was a reaction to flea bites. ??!! SERIOUSLY!!?? I asked about the pimples and was blown off. I know I am not having a reaction to flea bites. I have had cats and dogs and never reacted this way to flea bites. I have been using anti fungal cream since May/June. Can anyone recommend anyone who listens to you about issues with your pet? The vet's assistant was upset about too many women being in her field.. I wasn't applying for a job! Just wanted care.She wanted to talk to my boyfriend instead of me. He is MY dog not ours. I am so disappointed and upset with this place. Horrible! Terrible! He has 2 pimples[10/23/2014] on one side of his pee-pee. Should I put lotrimin on those? I came to Banfield when I got my cat mainly for the wellness plan. I liked one of the veterinarians, the other not so much, but nothing was big enough to make me leave. About a month ago my cat was having issues going to the bathroom, and since he is a male, this could be deadly. Banfield was great in the aspect that they wanted to see him immediately and took care of us as soon as we arrived. They informed me he was not blocked and did not want to run any 'unnecessary tests' and that they were going to treat him for a UTI. They gave him two shots, told us to watch him, but he should be fine. He was fine, until he wasn't. A couple weeks later I had to take my cat to the emergency vet to be seen because once again he was having issues going to the bathroom and Banfield was about to close. I told them the issues and explained Banfield saw him a couple weeks before for the same thing. They were SHOCKED a urinalysis was not ran and he was given medication for what they 'thought' was wrong. The vet informed me that the medication probably just kept him comfortable for those couple of weeks, but did not fix anything. He had crystals in his urine and the urinalysis could have told me this. But now, I am out thousands of dollars to save my cats life all because Banfield did not want to run an 'unnecessary test.' Thanks for royally screwing me over :) I should have gotten pet insurance rather than the wellness plan....... read more
