Sadly, we were regulars at this restaurant but after today we will not be returning. We went in for lunch and were seated by the owners son. I ask a question, and he was a bit rude in his response but I blew it off. He came back to get our order, I was on the phone with the bank and my husband tried to place my order in my behalf. The waiter ( again, the owners son) was questioning the choice saying there were "a lot of things in it including peanut sauce". My husband said he understood that but he didn't seem to want us to order that. My husband to told him to come back. The waiter walked away and flipped us off! Obviously some words were exchange after that but bottom line to be treated like that by ownership is crazy! Probably the most bizarre restaurant experience in almost 55 years! read more

This is probably the best Thai food I've ever had! Waco doesn't have many options to eat, and this is one of my favorites. I go here every time I pass Waco and it tastes amazingly delicious every time. The reason why I gave it 3/5 stars is because the service is TERRIBLE! They are super inhospitable and honestly rude. I'm here to tell you that the phrase, "good Thai food in Waco" is not an oxymoron. I was looking through restaurant reviews in the area, hoping to find something good that wasn't barbecue, and came across the reviews of Bangkok Royal. 4-5 stars across the board for Thai food? In Waco? I was skeptical, but had to investigate...especially since Bangkok Royal happened to be across the street from my hotel. I had the Hot Sea ($14.95) - a mixture of shrimp, scallops, squid, and mussels, stir fried in a red curry based sauce with green peppercorns, basil, and jalapenos (amusingly called "palajinos" on the menu). The sauce was a little thinner than I like for a curry, but it was very flavorful and quite good. I was surprised - in a good way - at how much heat there was in the dish (the "palajinos" were fresh, and were not seeded). I had half expected it to be watered down significantly to suit palates more accustomed to barbecue than Thai - more a "Tepid Sea" than a "Hot" one. I've had hotter Thai food, for sure, but the jalapenos in this dish were hot enough that I set most of them aside. Overall a positive experience, but I did have a couple issues. The squid was way overcooked to the point of being really rubbery. Squid chewing gum, anyone? Also, although the actual service I did receive was extremely friendly, I have a small bone to pick over the fact that the person who brought me my food just sort of plopped it down in front of me and left without asking whether I needed anything - then nobody stopped by my table at all until I walked up to the cash register to cash out (note that they don't bring you your bill, here...or, at least, they didn't bring mine). Had I needed anything while I was eating, I would have had to get up from my table and flag somebody down. The atmosphere is casual but very nice, albeit fairly loud on a Friday night. Probably not well suited for a quiet date, but perfectly fine for an evening out with friends. Minor issues aside, this was overall a much better experience than I thought I was going to be able to find in Waco, especially for Asian food. If I'm ever back in town, I can see myself making my way back to Bangkok Royal again. read more

I went to this restaurant on a recommendation from a co-worker. The food may be good, I don't really know...because I walked in to be seated and watched the hostess/waitress/employee/whatever attempt to split a large check 30 ways for 10 - 15 minutes before giving up and leaving because there was no end in sight. During this time several other people walked up to pay, be seated, or pick up their take out orders. I wasn't even acknowledged in the crowd of people...plus it would have been super easy to send me along to be seated and remove 1 less person from the frenzy. I love this place. I have had my birthdays here for several years, and they always let us bring a cake. Maybe I'm being self-centered, but I swear they put that sign up that says "no outside food or drinks, except birthday cakes" for me. Lol. My mom and I have been coming here since it was a hole in the wall located in Ivy Square. Pom always remembers my favorites: green curry with tofu, yellow curry with tofu, Bankok cashew with tofu, and Hot Sea. Hot sea is HOTTT when you ask for it hot. All with brown rice, which is a nice option. Yellow curry is the perfect winter comfort food. Or any time comfort food! And don't forget fried bananas with coconut ice cream. Please, don't forget! Yes, the food here has changed since they moved to a more central location on Franklin. I hear some people complain that they just aren't "Thai enough". To that I say, order 4 star spicy. That's pretty Thai. I think the changes in food from the Ivy Square location to the Franklin location is a smart move, because most Wacoans just can't handle what they were serving at Ivy Square. That was super authentic and delicious, but to a typical Waco palate, it's sadly just too intense. I would say their success as a restaurant has come from moving to a more central location, and making the tastes more Waco-friendly. While I did love the intense Thai-ness of old Bankok Royal, it's still delicious, still my favorite restaurant in Waco, and I completely understand. They are catering to the chicken-fried steak and barbecue eaters of Waco Texas. Intense Thai just won't fly. They're still authentic, family owned, and flavorful. Go here. One of the worst places you could go for food. The wait staff is extremely rude and the length of time for service can be long. I love Thai food and was in the area on a visit. I decided to try this restaurant as it was the only Thai option in Waco. Upon arrival I was very excited to try their Yellow Curry with Chicken along with their Pad Thai. As someone who avoids gluten and dairy I asked if there were gluten and dairy free options. They are, however the servers did not seem particularly aware what products did or did not contain any of the allergens previously mentioned. When I asked for clarity they acted as if it was an arduous task they would rather not be bothered with. Eventually I was provided with several options that were indeed free of the allergens previously mentioned. Following our order my friend and I sat engaging in casual conversation when I heard a bang on the table, the bang was from our waiter tossing the ordered food into the table. The waiter the. Tossed my plate as well, when it hit the table it slid towards me. I was appalled. I asked the waiter if he had a problem and why he was acting in such a manner. He told me he was fine. The meal was subpar. It was not the best Thai food I've ever eaten and it wasn't the worst. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the best, I would rate it a 4. Once we finished dinning I went to pay. The cashier (also a waiter) took my credit card for payment, swiped the card and then threw it back at me. It feel on the counter. He did the same to my friend who paid after. I was so astounded by the treatment that I asked if this was typical. The cashier looked as me and said they are busy he is ready to go home. We came here on a drive from Austin to Dallas with two young and tired kids in tow. The place was only about 30 percent full yet we were told to wait to be seated. They are all too busy swiping credit cards. Five minutes pass and nobody even bothers to look at us or even check on us as a courtesy. Awful service! This was the first time I've had the salad mixed with mint leaves instead of cilantro and my palate just couldn't do it. Mixing mint with meat was a no go for me. Food is excellent - we have been coming here over the last year as my group travels in for work events. Our previous visits were a bit awkward with the female server but the food was fast and delicious. This week, it took FOREVER for the female server to even approach our table - we had to flag her down. When we shared that someone at the table had an actual allergy to a food product, her response was that this person just "shouldn't eat out if it's that serious." That's fine - not a huge deal - but not exactly the kind of response we expected from someone that might want to see us again. As the food came, 6 of us received our food while the last 2 took awhile to get to our table. When the last one arrived, it was wrong. After a decent wait and a bit of arguing about what we actually ordered, we said just to leave it and we will eat it. We never saw a server again. In fact, we had to flag someone down anytime we needed something. Considering our position at the opposite end of the restaurant, flagging was an athletic feat. One of my coworkers decided to share our experience with a manager. The manager's response was unapologetic and actually said that my coworker was being "a dick." Bangkok is amazing! I am a sucker for their Pad Thai. One tip - go at lunch. The prices are lower AND you get an spring roll + salad or soup. Portion size is supposedly smaller, but it seems the same to me. At dinner the prices start to edge towards the pricy side, and the portion isn't really enough for me without a spring roll and soup/salad, which isn't included at dinner (or on the weekends!) So - go to Bangkok, but do at lunch during the week. read more

Moving to Waco, I didn't think there would be authentic asian food in town, let alone awesome Thai food! Let me tell you - Bangkok Royal is MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN WACO. Honestly, if it were in San Francisco, I would probably go there over some of the other Thai places - it's that legit! My go-to dish is the tofu pad thai. It's a large portion of flavorful pad thai, loaded with fresh vegetables and delicious tofu. Guess what I craved every day of the first trimester of my pregnancy... tofu pad thai! I had Bangkok Royal on speed dial. One time, I was craving tofu pad thai on a Sunday (when Bangkok Royal is closed), so my husband went to Pei Wei to get it for me. I took one bite and got really sad - it's awful compared to Bangkok Royal! I couldn't eat it. I also highly recommend the spring rolls and thai iced tea - delicious! read more

I always get their pork thai fried rice special for $6.95, which also includes a bowl of really good chicken ginger soup and a spring roll. I went to Bangkok Royal for takeout and waited almost twenty-five minutes for my food. It was pretty ridiculous. Additionally, my food was definitely sub-par. I'm from the city of Chicago, where I've had the privilege of eating some really tasty, authentic Thai food, which is the total opposite of what I ate here. I ordered my favorite Thai dish, the pad kee mao with tofu, and it just tasted like charred noodles; there was no yummy sauce so I ended up just picking out the veggies and tofu to eat. I ordered the tom yum soup as well, and it was flavored well, but way too salty. Lastly, I ordered the cucumber salad, which was just didn't taste fresh. I wish I had spent my $16 elsewhere... Furthermore, although I did not eat in the restaurant, it looked like customer service was really lacking. There were 12-14 tables when I arrived and only 2 waiters- who had to also man the cash register. They were running around and not paying special attention to their tables. All come with soup of the day or salad (couple of leaves of salad in sweet /sour ginger dressing) and egg roll. Bangkok Royal has good Thai food for a great price. My family can eat a lot, so we ended up having 5 entrees to share between the 4 of us. We ordered the thai fried rice, pineapple fried rice, bangkok noodle, pad thai (duh), and bangkok cashew. Most of the dishes were good, but some like the thai fried rice and bangkok noodle lacked any flavor whatsoever. The eggroll that came with it (lunch special) was just downright disgusting. It was just not good at all. You also get a choice of either soup or salad. The salad was so sad and small with barely any dressing on it. BUT, the soup was full of flavor and hot. It had chicken, ginger, and carrots. I recommend choosing the soup over the salad. The reason for the 4 star review (mostly) on top of some of the lackluster food is because of the service. In the whole restaurant, there are only 2 servers. These 2 servers not only are the servers but also the hostess, cashier, food runners, and bus boys. Surprisingly, the wait time was not as long as I would've thought for everything. But, you couldn't really get great service. I would suggest Bangkok Royal hiring other people to come work at said jobs above, which would make the 2 servers' life a little bit easier. read more

AWESOME!!! my first review! I've been to bangkok about 8 times and i'd have to say today was the best. I couldn't dine in but don't get me wrong, to-go was a relatively fast and it wasn't very boring to sit around. that water pyramid thing always gets to me haha. Anyways, i ordered pork pad thai like i usually do and got home to find that the portion was a LOT more than when i dine in. i don't know if they were feeling generous or not but i was pretty happy about that. lunch special also comes with an egg roll that was delicious and some sweet sauce. it was not fish sauce though. i was rather disappointed by the little salad that came with it though. the peanut dressing was a little off. kind of tasted like metal? i dont know but hey the pad thai made up for it. the lunch special price is definately great too. a whole lot better than dinner. like usual, will be back often. read more

OK y'all, a couple of things you need to understand. You don't go to Bangkok Royal for the service. You don't go to Bangkok Royal for the atmosphere (debatable) You go to Bangkok for the food. I've never been wowed by the service. It's usually pretty good, but occasionally awkward (you'll walk in, not be greeted, wait around to be noticed, and finally be seated by someone who says one or two words to you). I've never been wowed by the atmosphere. There's no music, the chairs and tables are very normal, the decor is quirky with a distinct Asian influence that is appropriate, etc. It definitely doesn't get in the way, and it's not bothersome. It's good. It doesn't stand out or amaze you. I'm always wowed by the food. I have found two menu items that always satisfy, for a great price, and leave me feeling full. Pad Thai and Panang Curry. I would recommend either to just about anyone. I don't think I've ever had to wait for a table. The food has always been amazing. Bangkok Royal is me and my wife's go-to date spot, and has been for at least 5 years. read more

Not very good. Liked it when we first tried it, but seems to have gotten lower and lower quality. It cost the same, but serving size has gone way done. Asked to please make extra spicy and wasn't spicy even when adding 2 cups of chili paste. My husband ate tine thing and was still hungry. Was like an appetizer. I never finish whole thing ever and did plus I need something to snack on. Wasn't gross, but wasn't good and not worth our money to go back. Added oil, chili flakes and salt to make have some taste. I eat at this place more frequently than anywhere in Waco. Delicious food and cheap prices. You pay $7.50 for a lunch special or around $10 with a drink and tip. This is why everyone goes for LUNCH. Dinner only serves slightly larger portions with no soup on the side like lunch. The waitstaff may not be to everyone's liking, but the food comes out fast and your drink is always full. Who could complain about that? My favorites are panang curry, pad prik khing, pad prik sod, the ginger chicken soup, pad kee mao, and pad thai. All freakin' delicious. If you love Thai food, you will most likely be disappointed by Bangkok Royal. The food is totally meh, compared to good Thai places in larger cities. I don't understand all the 4 and 5 star reviews. Maybe it was an off night? My pad see ew was too sweet and it had regular broccoli, not Chinese broccoli. My date's chicken pad thai was "meh." She was rude, cut our sentences off, rushed us for our checks when we wanted desserts. Consumer based, food industry, businesses have to hire the right people to sustain new customers to come back. We are in transition of moving from Fort Worth to Waco. As we went to this dry cleaner I grabbed one of the local magazine. That's where I found Bangkok Royal. I am a sucker for Asian food. So we decided to drive to Baylor area (where this restaurant at), after a short hot walk around the area we went in to the restaurant. The interior was nice, simple and a little dark. But the temperature was pretty warm consider it's 100F outside. They had portable fans around the restaurant which helped a lot. We ordered BBQ chicken and hot sea. They were both great but not make me want to go back for more in short period of time. I love spicy food so for me hot sea wasn't spicy enough. Next time I'd definitely request for more spicy. Portion was pretty big and loaded with seafood. BBQ chicken was delicious! Marinated chicken thigh with side of sweet and sour garlic hot sauce. Kinda like one you bought from the store. I couldn't agree more with other fellow yelpers regarding their service. Horrible. Only 2 servers and almost full house with no host/cashier at the front. It took our server a good 10 minutes before he stopped by dropped of some water with no greetings, no hospitality, no offer to another drink or appetizer. Horrible. And horrible, did I say horrible? I understand restaurant was busy but more servers would great. Simple as it is. We asked for extra sauce for BBQ chicken, of course, our server forgot about it and we had to flag another unfriendly server. As we paid our bill at the front desk, this unfriendly server checked me out with, again, no hospitality. We still left them appropriate amount of tips. We're pretty new to this place and tonight was the first time here. The staff was disrespectful and the service was awful. They kept us waiting for hours and never asked if we needed anything after the order. People joining after us got their order before and received great service. We told our friend needed gluten free, but they still dropped soy sauce on this food. It seems the restaurant is racist against people of color. There were other reviews saying the same. Went here with some friends for lunch and the food was reasonably priced. I ordered the yellow curry with beef. The lunch special came with a choice of either a salad or an egg roll, so I went with the salad. Unfortunately, the salad was extremely small and it did not taste fresh at all. The salad kind of reminded me of leftover Kroger salad in the refrigerated section. Luckily, the entree tasted better, and the rice was pretty firm and well cooked. In addition, the curry was flavorful and not too overwhelming, but the beef was very hard to chew and did not taste very fresh. I also saw many complaints from Yelpers about the service here, but the service for us was pretty good because our waiter constantly refilled our water and checked if we needed anything. My only gripe about the service was that when we had to pay at the front desk, the hostess gave us some attitude and was not very friendly. Overall, if you are in the Waco area, I would try this place if you want cheap thai food lunch specials, but otherwise, I would recommend that you check out some other restaurants to get your foodie fix. read more

I got something wit two stars, dass supposed to mean spicy, plate had me sweating. It was like not taste hot, I guess this boy just be sweating though. On the back of their menu they have a nice little surprised, it's called "Phucket Spicy" I'm thinking I'll have that next time after a hard day's work and I just don't care any more. This review is strictly for the Panang Curry. My favorite dish in Waco. I usually get it to go and I think the to-go has more food. Two meals! I love this stuff, I pretty much drink the sauce from the to-go container when the chicken and peppers are all gone. If I could change anything about it, I would make it more spicy, maybe you can, I'll ask next time. I do have one big complaint though. When I get it to-go, there is usually a line to pay, but not a line of to-go orders. I think it is for dinner only, but when you dine in, you have to go up to the front to pay. Sometimes I get there and my food is ready to go on the counter but there is a line of sometimes ten people to pay that are dining in. Since it's a lot of college students, they mainly pay separately and that takes a long time. I usually have to wait to pay around 8-10 minutes when I go in and have waited over 15 minutes. I would cut in line (if I notice my order ready on the counter) but I don't want to be that guy. If management reads this, please consider changing your policy and let dine in customers pay from their table. You are my favorite place in Waco right now and I would give you a five stars if it wasn't for this. read more
