I brought my son his bike from California and when I put the front and rear tire on of course there were problems. I am not a bike mechanic. I found this bike shop the next morning and ask if they had time today to look at it and fix the brake issues. I was greeted with a smile and was told no problem, bring it by anytime today. I brought it in about 2:30pm and not more then 10 minutes later, the mechanic had the issues fixed and explained what I did wrong ( I did say I'm not a bike mechanic). Great, friendly, fast service. Absolutely bring your bike in for service and it looks like they have a large selection of trail bikes and E bikes available. read more

I bought a bike at Bangtail. The price rang up at $100 more that the price tag on the bike. The attitude was not even "sorry about that", more like that's the price you have to pay as the computer is correct and the tag was wrong. The price tag was their mistake, but there was no taking responsibility for the out of date price tag. As I have an extremely difficult time finding a bike that fits, I proceeded with the purchase, but I didn't exactly feel I was a valued customer. read more

I needed to ship a wheelset and called this shop to see if they had any extra cardboard boxes laying around. They had one box that would hold 1 wheel. The owner wanted to "sell" it to me for $5. I was a bit surprised that he wanted to charge me for a cardboard shipping box that they received their new wheels in and was ultimately going into recycling or garbage. I declined. I have picked up wheel boxes in the past from our local bike shops and have always got them for free. I found a wheel box from another shop this time and they were glad to give it to me and save them from having to dispose of it. I have been a customer of Bangtail for some time and have purchased a couple of rather expensive bikes from them. I will not be shopping there again. They have lost future sales from me by trying to pocket an extra $5 for something they were going to throw out anyway. read more

The surly snow bikes are what caught my eye. Ok, I kind of lied. While they did catch my eye, I really just love bike shops. Bike shops are like coffee shops; each one has their own vibe. And I liked the vibe I felt talking with Rob, the owner. I liked his knowledge, experience and love of this area. He is a fantastic resource for anyone looking for a few tips about where to go and what to do around town. I had an offer to come out and demo one of his snow bikes, but unfortunately my circumstances did not allow me the time. I'd love to come back and spend more time at the shop!! read more

This review is for xc rental. They are closed on Sunday's so if you want to rent Saturday midday they make you pay for two day rentals since you can't return them Sunday which seems a bit unfair. Overall experience here was more like a big corporation rather than a local ski shop. I live here and will have lots of people visiting looking to rent xc gear and bikes in summer and I will not be bringing them here. Perhaps if you're looking to purchase gear you would have a different experience but there are lots of other friendlier and more accommodating local businesses I would recommend supporting instead. read more

These guys are rude. I had them warranty my rockshox reverb dropper seat post. The new pst came in on time, and they installed it. I came to pick my bike up an they hadn't even shortened the hose. They also tried to charge me $40 to install the thing when they hadn't done a complete install. I told them to keep the bike and finish the job. I came back a while later when thy said the bike was done, and this time they wanted to charger me $60 for 2 installs. I also work at a bike shop in California and I was appalled by the quality of service I received. It should be said that a complete dropper seatpost install should cost no more than $20. I would not recommend this bike shop to anyone read more

Rode a bike almost every day I was visiting Bozeman. First time I noticed I needed air I went to the shop up the street and eventually got someone to help me. Later in the week, after having a light meal at the Co-op, I realized I needed some more air so I went in Bangtail. They were soooo nice and helpful from the get-go. Made me feel welcomed and went out of their way to fill my tire and see if there was anything else I needed. Nice shop indeed! read more

Super knowledgeable and friendly and best thing is I went in with a budget and within minutes he found bikes for my wife and I in the large impressive assortment of bikes. After a couple test runs he found us bikes that we liked and fit the budget. To be honest its more bike then we anticipated for the money. this is a nice bike shop, but prices range on the mid-to-high range. they sell some awesome stuff, including the salsa and surly snow bikes. to my knowledge, the only guys in town who sell them. Bought a Specialized bike from them in fall 2018. Had a back rack and basket added. Wanted to ride to and from work - two miles one way. Noticed right away that the gears slipped, the quick release on either tire would come loose to the point where tire would come off - like a danger to the life of anyone riding. The basket was mounted so poorly that within three months of riding, the screws on the basket quick release fell out and one side of the quick release for basket fell off. Had multiple flat tires and finally replaced with hardened tires. Then, after fixing tires, the chain broke - twice. Trying to fix chain after second chain break. This was a mountain bike and cost about $800.00. An $800.00 headache and bad for blood pressure. Would not even consider riding this crap on mountain trails. Cannot even get me through city streets to work. In 1982 I bought a Schwinn 15 speed. Had it outfitted with a rack, bookbags, a light generator system. I rode it 10 miles to and from University in the fall and spring. Never had a flat or any other trouble with it. What ever happened to quality? What ever happened to customer concern? Brought the thing back to Bangtail a couple times to look a gear slippage and wheel loosening issue. Both times told issues were fixed. Will not be coming back. I live about a two hour drive away. Went here and spent a little more cause I thought I would get the same quality as my Schwinn. Instead, I got banged up my tail with a lemon read more

I visit Bozeman about once a year, and have always found these folks very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. My most recent experience started out not so good. My daughter had bought me some XC ski gloves for a Christmas present, and they were too big. When I took them in to return, they said they would only give me in store credit unless I had my daughter's credit card on which she had charged. When I explained that I lived 600 miles away and I was leaving the next day, they wouldn't budge. There was bike gear I needed, so I asked about that, and they hauled some stuff out of storage for me to look at, but nothing was what I wanted. So I walked out with a $40 in store credit feeling a bit underwhelmed. Within an hour after I got back to my lodging, I got a call that they had a way they could credit it to my credit card instead, which they did. I really appreciated the way they took the extra step, and went out of their way to address my situation. Fine group. One other comment about bike shops in general. I have found that there are bike and ski shops that are all about the gear and performance and there are shops that are about the love of the sport and the outdoors. This one is about the latter, but the folks really know their gear , as well. read more
