I really like the bread, it had all the textures- crispy, soft and not too "bread-y." I do wish they had more of the delicious roast pork in the sandwich. The sandwich was only $10, so I'd pay more for extra meat if that was option. The egg rolls were great! I'd come back just to order that. My peach tea was refreshing as well. I was really excited for this place to open and honestly wanted to love it. Unfortunately, the experience was pretty disappointing from the start. When we walked in, there was a really unpleasant smell inside--almost like walking into an aquarium or fish store. The staff was friendly and greeted us with smiles. My girlfriend and I ordered a few different sandwiches so we could try a variety of things. The prices seemed great at first, especially compared to what most places charge now, but once we got the food it made a little more sense. There was barely any meat on the sandwiches and they were mostly bread. We each tried a bite of the different ones we ordered, but unfortunately the flavors just weren't good. We even tried taking the sandwiches apart and eating just the small amount of protein inside, but we still couldn't finish them. Ooo, my mom showed me a reel or TikTok of this place opening and she was super enticed because they have fresh sugar cane juice AND banh mi. We were sold and went on the day after they opened. Unfortunately it would have been a 45+ minute wait...the workers told us that around when they open around 8AM until around 11AM is not as busy. No problem for us and we came the next morning. We ordered 5 sandwiches, an egg coffee, and of course sugar cane juice! The sandwiches are pretty good; I ordered the roast pork banh mi and the roast pork had a nice crunch to it. I would get it again, but I did feel the ratio of filling to bread was a bit skimpy. The egg coffee was really good and the whipped egg tasted light and custardy! The sugar cane juice was really refreshing on a hot day, but my parents found it to be too sweet to finish the whole thing. They ended up sipping it throughout the whole day. There were maybe 4 of us waiting for our order but I didnt have to wait too long. Unlike other bahn mi places, they put their sandwiches in a clear plastic container rather than wrapped in paper. The veggies and mayo were good. I wish they put more pate and amount of meat in the dac biet was okay. I was expecting more crispy pork belly because there were maybe only 5-6 pieces and the rest was char sui. The bread was tasty but not crispy as expected and for the price, I was expecting something a bit bigger. I had to make my own sauce so I wasn't just tasting bread. I mixed soy sauce and sambal oelek chili paste for the sauce. I was really disappointed in this place. I love eating banh mi and had it all the time when I was living in SJ. I was so happy to have a place like this but when I tried it, it was just disappointing. The bread was so stale. It had a texture almost crumbled foam. There was not enough meat and it didn't taste fully cooked. I went on a Saturday evening, it wasn't busy at all. So I was hoping all the food would still be fresh. I don't think that people understand the difference between a soft opening vs a grand opening. I would say that they could add a little bit more pickled veggies, but that's only because its personally my favorite part of the sandwich lol. I was really rooting for Banh Mi Xpress because our area needs a great Vietnamese sandwich shop, but unfortunately, my first experience was a huge letdown. I don't want anyone unfamiliar with bánh mì to think this is a good representation of what an authentic Vietnamese bánh mì should be. I've had bánh mì throughout Sacramento, San Jose, Orange County, and Vietnam, and the bread here was the biggest disappointment. The roll should have a light, airy interior with a thin, crisp exterior. Instead, this tasted and felt more like a soft French roll. The bread is such an integral part of the sandwich that they really need to master it. The pickled vegetables should be crisp, crunchy, and tangy. These were bland, sliced far too thin, and had no crunch whatsoever. The pâté was completely missing from my sandwich, and the mayo was strangely sweet--almost syrupy. I ordered the #10 crispy pork bánh mì. The best thing I can say is that the pork was, in fact, crispy. However, the sandwich was also missing the savory soy-based sauce that normally brings all the flavors together. Overall, it was an absolute disappointment. I genuinely hope this review reaches the owners and that they make the necessary changes because I would like to see this business succeed. I grew up in SJ and will always compare Duc Huong to any banh mi I get and this place pales in comparison. The filling was okay and is the only reason why it's getting any stars at all. I would've loved if it had more meat though. It was stuffed with the pickled radish&carrots, but not enough meat! Anyway, my main complaint is the bread. I got a combination, grilled pork, grilled beef, and crispy pork. With all of them, the bread was hard as a rock and made such a crumbly mess. I get that people like a good crust on their bread, but I couldn't even take a proper bite. First off, I will say the flavor is there, i appreciate the smear of pate for flavor, but that's where the positives end. There was any hardly any meat on the sandwiches and the so called "crispy pork" was not crispy at all and completely cold. Been meaning to try this place out since they opened. Finally called in an order to go for the whole family. Got in, order was packed very neatly! Not just wrapped in paper and thrown in a bag. Each individually wrapped and can see each sandwich was cared for. Everyone dug into the sandwiches and it was delicious! The bread, meat, sauce.... it blended together great! Gotta say one of the best banh mi i have ever ate. Man, i was looking forward to trying this place for months. Before they even opened, I told all my family, foodie friends, and random people at work about them. I finally got there for their soft opening. Owner was very friendly and decor was very nice. Unfortunately the bread was not what I expected and the amount of meat was disappointing. I frequent Duc Huong, Bahn Mi Ba Le, and other known spots. I dont mind driving to get legit Banh Mi. The bread is key and unfortunately it was cold, almost stale, the inside was not chewy at all, it was hard and crumbly. They just opened so I hope they read this and make those adjustments with fixing the bread, adding more meat and pate,actually grilling the grilled items,making the banh bao bigger and fluffier yet keeping the prices reasonable. More frequent customers always oulast the profit for each sell in the long run. If they make those adjustments, myself and im sure plenty of others will go there regularly and spread to our family and friends to come check them out. I wish nothing but success for this business. They skimped on the crispy pork trying to fish out for it. Some amount of pickled daikon and carrots and a small spear of cucumber. The bread was way much for the portion of what was inside. Crumby and stale bread. Wasn't busy. The fries in yelp were advertised as crinkle fries but were just like mcdonald's fries. Nothing special about the food. The sandwich was dry and could have used some pate and some condiments. The strawberry yogurt was good. Could use bit more ice on a hot day. The place was fairly warm being pretty hot outside.
