I was initially seen by Dr. Lisa Cohen, who I think is personable and is willing to answer any questions/concerns (this was the consultation that occurred in 2022). I had my procedure 3 days ago, and I think it went pretty smooth. They bring you in and the technician will have you sit down, ask you several questions about your past medical history, and then put the pulse ox machine on your finger and a blood pressure cuff on. At this point Dr. Cohen came in, and in her typical warm fashion, asked me how I'm feeling and if I have any questions. I'm a pharmacist by profession, so we had a discussion on what medications and doses she was using to put me to sleep (it's a concoction of fentanyl, midazolam, and propofol), how long it would take, and what post op pain management would look like (I made it clear I didn't want any narcotics, and surprisingly the recommendation I had matched what she planned on prescribing me, so I'm glad we were in alignment). She also briefly went over what to do post op, but not in great detail. Then the procedure began. They administered the medications and after ~ 10 min I felt very calm (but still awake). I think I eventually fell asleep during the procedure but I remember being awake at least 15 min in. They injected the numbing agent into my gums, and began their work. I didn't feel any of the extractions or anything, and before I knew it, the procedure was over. Dr. Cohen left and the technician brought in my bf to sit with me in the procedure room. After some time, we left. Since then, recovery has been what I expected it to be. My jaw is swollen, taking pain and antibiotic medication as prescribed, and just taking it easy. I have 4 stars because I feel like the emphasis on post op measures wasn't there. Yes, they provide you a pamphlet on general things, like using a salt rinse on the areas where teeth was removed, and using a cold compress when experiencing bruising or swelling. I had a broken tooth removed, and Dr. Cohen put a bone graft there, and I was not counseled on what to do with that. When I called to get more instruction on that, as well as additional questions I had regarding the wisdom teeth removal (ex. When can I use my water pik tooth brush? How long to I continue salt rinsing? Is there a post op visit scheduled so that the surgeon is able to see how everything healed?) I felt like the technician I was talking to was a bit annoyed and was lowkey rushing me off the phone, and I didn't appreciate that.

The…read morereceptionist(s)/this office only cares about acquiring new patients and do not do the due diligence to inform patients about accepting their insurance. I went there multiple times and not once did they share with me that I was actually out of network, I had to find out by contacting my insurance company to check on the specific claim. I went in a total of two times, first was a regular cleaning, second time was a follow up/filling. They DID NOT once mention to me that they are actually out of network for my coverage. They had at least 3 opportunities to tell me that they are not in network for my insurance plan. 1) The first visit upon going into the office I gave the receptionist my insurance card and they input all my info and should have seen the in/out network info; 2) when I was paying for my cleaning and scheduling my second appt for filling they could have warned me about charges due to them being out of network for me; 3) my second visit before I went in for dental work or afterwards when I had to pay, I specifically asked why the cost was so high (close to $200) for two basic fillings and they said they had to check with insurance, but they should have seen their out of network status was the reason for the cost. They even continue to schedule my next appt for me in 6 months. For people who several hundred dollars makes a huge difference in their budget, this would be a devastating experience, so please beware if you're new or existing customer that's been wondering why you've been getting high dental bills!

I have been seeing Dr. Handelman off and on for over 10 years (12? 15? I can't remember when I started seeing him!) and have always been pleased with everyone in the office. Originally, my mother, older brother, and I would see him for our regular cleanings at least since I was in middle school (that's as far back as I remember). He has done my sealants and filled a cavity and was really good working around my braces for the 4 years that I had them, too. I have never been worried about going to the dentist! He (and his assistants) have always been great as long as I can remember. When I was 15 or so, he recommended that I get all of my wisdom teeth removed and told us about a program through NIH that would save my mom a lot of money. I ended up not getting my teeth out then, since they never bothered me and he didn't push the matter at all. When I was in my late teens I stopped going to see him, but my mom kept up her visits and brought my step-dad along to join in on the dental fun. He had to have a lot of work done and had good things to say about Dr. Handelman and the recommended surgeon. Fast forward several years to when I got insurance again and Dr. Handelman was the first (and, truthfully, the only) doctor I called for a check-up. We picked up right where I left off all those years ago. He asked what I have been doing with myself and how my mom and brother were doing. He looked at my fillings and my wisdom teeth and told me he did have some concerns, but nothing that was a pressing issue. He was out-of-network with that insurance (MetLife), but the desk staff took care of all of my paperwork. I did have to pay some up-front, but after the claim forms went through I ended up with an $80 credit towards my next visit. (The woman I spoke with offered to send me a check for the $80 if I wanted. I declined.) I changed jobs and lost insurance and stopped going to see him (again). When I got insurance back through my new job (United Healthcare, this time), again, Dr. Handelman was the first doctor I called. By now, another couple of years had passed and my mom and step-dad had moved away, but he still asked after them. He checked everything out and we talked about the concerns that he had had the last time I was in and decided that, since nothing was bothering me, he wasn't going to do anything. He told me that there was no sense in spending the money to have a procedure done when it wasn't necessary yet. (A big thanks for thinking of my savings account! :) ) (Dr. Handelman also takes care of my husband's teeth and the last time he was there he came home and said, "The doctor told me to tell you and your mom hello.")

The music he plays in his office is awesome, and his staff is extremely friendly. Recently I called on Friday and the office was closed. I left a message on the voice-mail because I had a minor emergency, and Dr. Handelman himself called me back to diagnose my situation. After speaking with me over the phone, he felt it was best for me to come in to the office because I was leaving for a business trip over the weekend. He scheduled an appointment with me, and arrived on his day off & opened his office just to help me. That showed me how much he really cares about his patients, and I really appreciated it. Thus, I highly recommend Dr. Handleman's office for you and your families/friends needs.

First, I must tell you that I looked at my appointment time and thought my appointment was at 11:00 am. After, I arrived, I found out my appointment was at 1:00 pm. Let me tell you how nice Dr. Abel was, he saw me at 11: 00. What a hero! Dr. Abel is funny and kind. He explained all of the ins and outs of the procedure. He also went over the different options I had to choose from. I had a panoramic mouth X-ray while I was there and his staff is top notch too. The office is bright and comfortable. It has all of the modern equipment needed to complete your surgery. I haven't had the surgery done yet, but I have every confidence that Dr. Abel is the surgeon to do it.

I was always someone that was reluctant to get my wisdom teeth removed. Both of my parents still…read morehave theirs and despite my awareness of potential issues that could arise, I always felt like I should only get them removed if absolutely necessary. Well alas, the time arrived when these suckers needed to get evicted. While I've had sensations of gum tenderness from time to time over the years, it wasn't until last week when one shifted in such a way that made it difficult to eat or even open my mouth fully. Because I wasn't sure how quickly my condition could worsen, I hopped on Yelp to find a top rated oral surgeon (even if not within my insurance network.) Since my family is in Montgomery County and would be helping me with pick up and recooperation after surgery, I was also looking for somewhere not too far from them. After reading BCC Oral Surgery's reviews, I followed up with quick phone call where I peppered the receptionist with a ton of questions. Both times I called, the person that picked up phone was pleasant, patient and knowledgable. Plus, they had availability to perform the surgery the following week, where as the place my dentist referred was likely not to have an appointment for at least a month. So instead of giving myself too much time for me to build up my anxiety further, on Friday I booked for wisdom teeth removal surgery for that following Monday. The office sent me a new patient form to fill out online and was given instructions on how to best prep for my surgery in advance. On Monday morning, we gave ourselves plenty of time to get there with traffic and parking in mind. (There is a garage in the building but it fills up rather quickly.)Another bonus: There is a pharmacy in the building as well, so that is also something very helpful to know since that's where we ended up picking my prescriptions up from. Upon arriving, they had to take some additional x-rays since Dr. Patel was a bit concerned with how close one of my wisdom teeth was to a nerve. When he came in to meet with me, he was cool, calm, direct and explained to me any concerns and risks. He was confident without being arrogant or without bedside manner and quite frankly, his whole team also reflected that. The techs that took x-rays and administered the laughing gas were all so professional, sweet, funny and re-assuring. I was joking and laughing with them before the gas even hit me. Once I had a little laughing gas in my system, they then administered the general anesthesia and within seconds I was out like a light. ( I remember the doctor walking in and I said "What's up doc? Respectfully." Then I gave him he peace sign and I was a goner.) When I woke up, I was sitting comfortably in the recovery room. I had very little discomfort, aside from some grogginess and a mouth full of gauze. But I was very present and aware despite it all, and I believe from start to finish it all took between 45-60 minutes. After coordinating with my mom, they wheeled me down to where my mom would be pulling up with my car and I was on my way. Dr. Patel said that if I did feel pain, it would likely not be until later in the evening once the general anesthesia wore off, so I was ready to potentially experience some excruciating pain. But lucky for me, aside from swelling and some light bleeding the overall pain was minimal. I'm now 48 hours post surgery and I've been able to to keep any pain at bay with over the counter painkillers (and of course, prescribed antibiotics.) But aside from the swelling, this has been the most unexpectedly pleasant experience after getting four teeth pulled, two of which were impacted. Overall, I couldn't sing the praises of Dr. Patel and his team any further and am so glad that I found a total rockstar of a surgeon and team to make my wisdom teeth removal a top tier experience overall, with very minimal discomfort. Thanks again, BCC Oral Surgery!
