A friend recommended this dentist as I have a teen on the spectrum and a little guy that has a harder time with his visits. They were so caring immediately when I called to book, booked us a private room for my kid with sensory issues. And our hygienist took her time and was so patient with both boys. This is for the Landmark office at Little River Turnpike We have brought our kids to Alexandria Children's Dentistry's (ACD) Little River Turnpike office for at least a decade. Never had any complaints about service. Our children grew up and we recently decided to move them to another dentistry and that's when things got nasty and weird. We asked ACD to please send our kids' X-rays to the new dentist and filled out a form. Their website says X-rays are free and so are the list of clinical services completed. ACD is refusing to release the records unless we make a payment, contrary to what they are advertising on their website. My wife talked to their customer service several times and I talked to their manager on the phone. One rep confirmed X-rays are free (written on their website black on white), then another called to say they are not free. The manager was no help at all and kept repeating the demand for payment on the phone like a parrot. They are withholding the records from the dentistry that we moved our kids to. It's very strange and unprofessional that they won't honor what they advertise. This is deceptive conduct and false advertising. Uncaring and greedy on the management side. It appears they are sticking it to us for moving our kids to another doctor and are playing silly games. I can't remember any other time that dentists refused to share your X-rays with other dentists if you ask them to. This is a first, awful experience. Would not recommend this office to any parents. Take your children someplace else. read more

It actually pains me to write this review. As an American woman, with an African American daughter finding this office was quite exciting for me. We started here when my daughter was 1. She is now 7. The second she was able to get an X-ray she had a cavity. She has had quite a few times--literally almost every time. Each time we got the diagnosis, I legitimately cried--wondering what am I doing wrong. I am quite militant about food--much less sweets. My daughter brushes twice a day at home and I am the mother who packs a tooth brush and floss in my daughter's lunchbox. This is us. No clue what we were doing wrong. Let's start with the fact that I asked multiple times to have a conversation with the dentist concerning this. And was only able to ever speak with an hygienist/assistant. The only advice or solution that was ever offered--- stop the candy and surgery drinks, brush and floss proper multiple times a day. Looking back, I can't help but wonder if I was profiled. Fast forward, my daughter finally had an actual toothache. We went in. They decided to do an X-ray. The finding was that a previous filling needed to be repaired, however she needed to take antibiotics prior. This also corresponded with a family vacation. When we got back they did the repair. This literally happened again! This time apparently I was at the end of what my insurance could cover. I got a supplemental bill stating that my insurance is not going to cover the work. I unfortunately made the mistake of asking for an itemized bill and asked for someone to go through the bill with me and what I received from the insurance company. In the end half of the charges needed to be removed. I paid the rest. My daughter AGAIN had a toothache. I brought her back. They made me pay upfront for the examination for the first time ever (why? Is it because of who I was or because I questioned the previous bill?) It was again a previous filling that was hurting. We had to go antibiotics. We then went back only to find out that a tooth on the other side was also an issue. At this point the only solution was to remove both teeth and put in spacers on both sides. They decided to provide this complementary. Finally I decided to get a second opinion. I actually got two. Both said the teeth were to far gone then needed to be removed. They said if they are doing it for free let them do it. Reluctantly, I go back and let them pull the teeth. My daughter came out BALLING! My kid is not a crier. She takes and hit and keep moving. I was literally in tears seeing how in pain she was. She only had one spacers when she was supposed to have two. The assistant explains one of her teeth was loose and so they could not fit the spacer. Within 2 months the only spacer they put in broke and cut the inside of her mouth. I brought her back and heard every excuse. This has never happened. I'm not sure what she is doing..... my 6 year old. To date, I have yet to speak with a dentist, much less Dr. Austin--considering all of the issues I had with HER business. I write this because NO FAMILY should experience what we did. I am not one to say that this was because I was black. I would hope it was not because of presumed socio-economics--as everyone deserves good health care (my sidebar is I am an Ivy League educated attorney). I have chosen to switch dentist, however I hope this review will solicit better care from this organization. read more

Worst dentistry esp the staff. My son has been visiting Landmark office for the last three years. The manager at Landmark office dismissed my child because I asked them explain why we need to pay the copays to schedule an appointment (they are asking patients to pay copay before getting any treatment, just to schedule an appointment). This was not there before. Never saw such process in any of the medical offices visited. The manager first said she's busy. However, when I mention about writing a review about my experiences with them, she showed up just to dismiss my child. She should have appreciated my honesty & explained it. I've been taking my children to see Dr. Angela for several years. She's amazing. Unfortunately, her administrative staff is horrible. They don't care about you as a parent nor respect your children nor your time. My child was treated horribly by Letitia at his last appointment. She was rude and disrespectful to him and then to me all over a billing mistake that someone in their office made. Rather than posting a review, over the past 3 weeks, I've called them 4 times to provide them with the correct insurance and share my concerns and no one has called me back. I'm really sad to write this review, because up until now, we have had great experiences in the Monroe Ave. office. Today, my daughter (5) went in for two fillings. She was excited to come in but then got terrible anxiety when they tried to put the nose mask on for laughing gas. She was super scared and the dental assistant was great with her, suggesting that maybe she should go to the other office for laser treatment because they didn't want to traumatize her. Then the dentist came in and very rudely said to my 5 year old, "You're not going to do this right? There's another kid coming in after you so you need to get out". So now my kid is crying loudly and refusing to move so I have to carry her out. When we got to the area where you schedule appointments, another dental assistant came to tell her to, "be quiet because there are babies in here that you're scaring". I feel like it was inappropriate for her to say that to my terrified 5 y/o, because it just made her feel worse about the entire situation. Again, I don't have any issues with the actual dental care, but for an office which prides itself on being kid-friendly, the staff (apart from my kid's dental assistant who was lovely) wasn't very caring in a vulnerable time for my child- I'm really disappointed and I won't take either of my kids to this location again. read more

Dr. Austin: your office lost our business because of how your office manager/scheduler treated us. (Preface: my mother was in dentistry for 40+ years. The explanations that were given to me by this office in connection w/ my experiences below did not "make any sense" to her.) I felt the office manager and scheduler demonstrated little regard for keeping our appointments and respecting our schedule. They unapologetically gave misleading and incomplete reasons for canceling our appointments. Consequently, we left the practice. My three children received excellent treatment from the dentists and the hygienists. And we were very happy with the practice until the events below unfolded. A year ago, after a cleaning at the Landmark location, we scheduled our first appointment in the Del Ray office, which is closer to our home. Mere days before that first Del Ray office appointment - after receiving a text confirming my kids' appointment there - we were informed that we had to re-schedule our appointment back to the Landmark office because - in the office's words - our insurance was not "set up" for the new Del Ray location. So, after some significant shuffling of schedules and other appointments, we re-scheduled our three children to another, less-convenient date and time. At that appointment, we were told that our insurance would be "set-up" in Del Ray by the next 6-month appointment and the Landmark office scheduled our June 2017 appointment at the newer, closer-to-our-house location. Fast forward 6 months, a 6/14 text confirming our 6/28 Del Ray appt, and just 6 days before the appointment, I received a voicemail that said "there's a little issue for the upcoming appointment so please give us a quick call back." I called back and was informed our insurer was still not "set-up" to cover Del Ray appointments. Frustrated and unable to schedule an appointment for my three children at Landmark within the next week - necessary because of extensive summer travel plans - I informed the office that I was leaving the practice. The Monday before the now-canceled dentist appointment, "Sarah", unprompted, called and left a defensive message, informing me - and I quote - "the Del Ray location does not accept your out-of-network benefits and we do not have same-day available appointments at our Landmark location." Whoa. 1) "Not accepting" benefits differs from "waiting" on benefits. This is news to me; and, 2) I'm not interested in same-day appointments. If I was, I'd take my kids to a walk-in clinic. But I have a busy schedule, good insurance, and that's why I schedule my appointments well in advance. Also, Sarah, if you wanted to help, try "I'm sorry about our failure to timely inform you about the insurance decision and its consequences; let me help make this right. We value your business." Annoyed by Sarah's approach and this situation, I contacted my carrier to understand why the office didn't yet accept their coverage in Del Ray. The carrier was just as confused as I was. The possible explanation: 1) the new office was possibly opened in connection with a different federal tax id; or, 2) that office simply decided not to submit their new location to this insurer. In other words, the ball was always in the dentist's court, not the insurer's (which is different from the office originally suggesting that it was my insurer that was delaying benefits to this new location). I reluctantly returned Sarah's call. She repeated that the office decided not to accept our insurance at the Del Ray location (my dental-professional mother found this strange but wondered if the dentists submitted a high fee schedule the insurer would not approve). SO, all along, the practice wasn't "waiting" on our insurance to kick-in in Del Ray; rather, they decided not to accept this insurance. And yet, on two occasions, they 1) knowingly scheduled our appointments at the Del Ray location despite the insurance issues, and 2) belatedly canceled those appointments, knowing for months they didn't/wouldn't accept our insurance in Del Ray (which raised suspicion on my mom's part and led to my phone call directly to my insurer). Why not just tell me the truth in the first place, saving me the hassle and saving them the patients? I feel the staff handled this situation very poorly and I'm disappointed in their unprofessional response to my frustrations. I cannot return to a practice that unnecessarily misled me for months, responded defensively, and created a significant inconvenience for my family (my kids' next cleaning, at a new provider, isn't until late August). Notably, the first time they canceled my children's appointment at the Del Ray location, my reaction was one of sympathy. "How frustrating for your office to have to cancel all these appointments as you wait on insurance companies to confirm coverage at your new location!" What did I know? Not as much as the dental office. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. read more

This is for the Del Ray location. Dentist was great. Hygienist was fine. They go way overboard on the prizes and bribes - my 3 year old doesn't need 5 cheap plastic toys to sit still. And very annoyed that when I called to make the appointment they said they accepted my insurance, but then turns out they were actually out of network and i had to pay the out of network rate. We just had our regular 6 month check up and this time I did not need to sit with him on the chair he decided to sit on his own. This is the absolute worst dentist office I have even visited. The office staff is very disrespectful and non courteous. My interaction was positive during previous visit however today I went for a scheduled visit because my daughter broke her cap. When I arrived, Megan who was extremely nasty and rude did not even offer a greeting, ask for a previous balance payment. I had no clue that I even had a balance due. She took the balls that they give to every child from my daughter. My daughter who is 4 started crying. This was not discussed with me prior to scheduling. I was unclear of the balance because the numbers were incorrect. They added additional charges and did not inform me. Melissa lied and said I was rude. Big joke and called building security who never even introduced himself just came up and told me to leave his building very loud and very rude! In front of an office full of people including children. He was very nasty rude and making mockery of me. Yelling "pay your balance and get out and never return." Not sure what type of ghetto nasty practice this is but please do yourself a favor and never ever ever go there! Ever! read more

Would avoid Alexandria Children's Dentistry off Seminary Road. My three children have gone here for a decade and we're having lots of problems. My middle son has had a few cavities treated here and each time we go back and somehow the cavities are deeper despite limiting candy, brushing twice a day, flossing as often as possible and eliminating gummy food. I've been trying to transfer our records from there to get a second opinion on their recommendation that my son get a stainless steel / metal cap on his tooth instead of porcelain or doing a larger filling. And they won't release the records to me! I've been on hold for 15 minutes three times and will have to travel there to get them. Maybe good for very young kids but a nightmare if you stay with them longer. read more

I want so badly to give them 5 stars as the dentists that we've seen are very good. My children have been patients here for over 3 years and only seen Dr Austin once. The other ped dentists have been thorough and handle children extremely well. The environment is well designed with the focus on children and watching tv as a distraction. This practice is wonderful if you can book 6-8 months out and don't need to change your appointment. They have limited days - only their Landmark location is open on Fridays from 8:00-12:00 and don't have hours after 4:30pm on any days. Good luck trying to get an afternoon apt after 3:00pm. Every time we visit we end up waiting 30-40 mins for our appointment time. I try to book first thing in the morning, so they can't be that behind by then. Wish it was easier to see a good pediatric dentist in this area! read more

I recently took both my children to Alexandria Childrens Dentistry located in Del Ray and had such an amazing experience. My children are not keen on going to see the dentist, but when we left our appointment, they couldn't stop talking about how nice Dr. Angela was and going to the dentist is not so bad after all. The office is very clean and kid friendly and the staff were all amazing and professional! We were seen immediately after checking in and my childrens' treatment went flawlessly. Very disappointing experience with our child at Alexandria Children's Dentistry. We were referred to them by our family dentist for sedation and root canal. My wife was in the room when our family dentist called Alexandria Children's Dentistry. Upon arrival, they told my wife it would be an extraction with nitrous. After advising that a tooth needed to come out, they were unable to remove it. Further, our family dentist had advised that any extractions should have spacers, to leave room for the adult teeth to grow in. Alexandria Children's Dentistry did not go with a spacer for the one extracted tooth even though my wife asked for it. Finally, the staff tricked my wife into leaving the treatment room "to discuss insurance and payment" and then wouldn't let her back in the room. I don't think we'll go back. We'll look instead for someone with better reviews. read more

Yesterday, my rambunctious toddler crashed into the floor at day care. After a trip to the emergency room we were urged to see a dentist. I called Alexandria Children's Dentistry because of their positive reviews and proximity to our house. They were about 30 minutes from closing, but said they'd see us. We arrived 15 minutes before closing (and definitely stayed a good 45 minutes afterwards), they whisked us through x-rays, paperwork, a consult, and finally a tooth extraction. I should add here that this was my little guy's first trip to a dentist, he was not exactly cooperative. Dr. Angela and her staff were absolutely wonderful. The office is warm and friendly. I wish I could give Dr. Angela and her staff 10 stars. They are absolutely amazing. I am not a big yelper, but I absolutely had to post a review for this place. The staff: Very Friendly and Wonderful The Dr. Smart, very good w/ children, fast, and was able to tell me what needed immediate attention, versus what was just cosmetic and would fall out. I agree with other yelpers AMAZING! I have been to many many pediatric dentists having 3 kids. BTW, My 4 now 5 yr old have MAJOR restorative work done scheduled over many different visits by the Doc for my son's ease and comfort. All so far have been great and right after the visit he has acted happy and as if he didnt even go to the dentist. He was able to watch a movie will getting his teeth cleaned and the dentist was amazing with him. We will NEVER go back again. My child needed to have a filling and the dentist needed to use the laughing gas. My child was very anxious and got more anxious when I was asked to leave the room. I was very worried my child would think I left her when she needed me for comfort. She's only 4 years old. They blast the TV so loud on two screens which made my child feels overwhelmed. It made me feel overwhelmed. Since my daughter had the filling there, we have been unable to floss in between the last two teeth without pain and fear. It's like the dentist put too much filling too close to the next teeth and now we have to force the floss in and my daughter has to cry and beg. Also, I must mention the office manager. She treated us in a demeaning and disrespectful manner. She definitely could benefit from customer service training. And please stop giving kids these small plastic balls. They are chocking hazard. read more

If my children didn't love it so much, I wouldn't go back. I dutifully made their appointments six months out at their last cleaning because scheduling is tough. The office cancelled my coveted Saturday morning appointments and left me with no decent options for rescheduling. It's so hard to get in!! My child's cleaning that should have been in 6 months will now be in 8 months. And I will have to make two trips now with different appointments for each child. The new appointments are not at the office I prefer either. The staff person scheduling me seemed completely unconcerned. read more

Overall a great place. We have been taking our kids here for over a year. No problema yet. They are definitely good with kids.

We will not go back because of their unprofessional and unethical business practices. We were referred to Alexandria Children's Dentistry by our peditrician who is in the same building, so we walked over to their office after a doctor's visit. I asked the their receptionist to speak to their insurance coordinator to ensure they would take our insurance. I told the insurance coordinator that I did not think our medical insurance would cover much for a dentists visit since it is only medical insurance. After showing the insurance coordinator our insurance, she assured me they could and would bill my insurance and that we would not be out of pocket for any expenses. With that information, we booked a cleaning for my then two year old son on April 26, 2017. Alexandria Children's Dentistry's statement shows that they received a payment of $39.00 from my insurance company two days later on April 28, 2017. We returned with our son on November 15, 2017, for a second check-up. Again, Alexandria Children't Dentistry received payment from our insurance company of $39.00. On March 29, 2018 (almost a full year later from our first visit), I received an invoice in the mail from Alexandria Children's Dentistry for $394.38, for the amount of their "service" that my insurance did not cover. 1. They told me that they would take our insurance, and that I would not have to pay out of pocket for their service. 2. Our second visit was seven months after our first visit. They should have informed me at that time that I owed them $197.19 for the first cleaning. 3. They sent me an invoice 11 months after our initial visit for $394.00. I am an adult and my teeth cleaning does not cost $200. They literally used a gloved hand to rub floride on my son's teeth, examined his mouth and gave him a balloon. My teeth cleaning is much more involved and costs much less. I would never pay this amount for this little of service if I had known upfront what they were going to charge me. 4. They told me they wanted to extract my 2-year old son's tooth. I did not allow that to happen and he is fine. I cannot imagine that cost. (Update: 7 months later the tooth they wanted to extract is alive and healthy.) read more

I took my daughter school to bring her to an appointment asked on two occasions to have my insurance verified asked him to give me a call back I never got a call back, told me I had to pay upfront, put me on hold for 6+ minutes. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Did I mention, AMAZING!!! Saturday early morning appointments. Beautiful, clean office. Super friendly staff. Wonderful waiting area with up to date cartoons and a separate play area. At the start of the appointment my daughter had a few tears (it was her first visit, after all). Karen did a bang up job playing with her, distracting her and cleaning her teeth. She even managed to floss!!! Dr Austin was also incredible, she was able to fight through my daughter's tears to count her teeth and do a quick checkup. Love this place! I love that when you walk in, it does not look like a dentists office. Amazing care! My child has autism and the staff and dentist are experienced in making children with special needs comfortable through out the process.
