I never thought I would leave but after a minor accident a couple years ago I had a completely different experience and left USAA. I had 2 previous accidents where the person who hit me had State Farm. I was so impressed by how expediently, hassle free, fairly, professionally, and politely they handled the opposing sides claims that I decided to go to State Farm. It was a no-brainer, if they lost money but treat me that well then they have to take care of their clients that much more. I knew of Ryan through friends and decided to give his agency a try. The auto prices came out to almost the same as my USAA coverage with a slightly better deductible if I bundled my auto policy with home owners. I was happy to start off paying the same monthly amount given how cheap I thought USAA was compared to other providers. Ryan puts a personal touch into his agency which I can appreciate coming from a technology software and services background and having worked in a service industry since my mid-teens. He personally meets with as many of his new clients as possible. You might be a recovering cynic (I mean "realist") like me and think it is a sales pitch, but he never once tried to push more services on me. I would know, in the past a large part of my job was selling warranties and service contracts, and I was good at it. He did make sure I got the coverage I needed and I was happy with my other providers, but that is just as much, if not more, about making sure your clients know what you offer and have a chance to decide whether it is right for them. When the time comes they cannot blame you for not offering and letting you know the benefits. I picked up on something from meeting with him, he was trying to build a rapport with his client, understand their goals and what was important and make sure they had their needs met. It is smart to meet with you and attempt to begin a relationship building process. If you take care of someone well, and know what is important to them, then they will come to you with the needs you can meet. In this regard, good relationships work to the benefit of both parties. This personal touch is something that my previous insurance company lacked. It is really nice to be able to call my agency instead of a corporate hotline. Although State Farm agents are captive and cannot sell other companies services, they are still autonomous in large regard. State Farm is the largest insurance agency in the US. In my experience so far this has been a positive. I was even able to drop AAA and save money because I get free towing through insurance. More recently, I started asking for more from Ryan when it came to my side business. I was really blown away by the amount of time he invested when he knew he would not be getting any more business. The insurance I wanted for my business was outside the scope of what State Farm offered but he called several people that did what I do and came back with a lot of very helpful information, including contacts and options. I have also spoken with his staff and everyone so far has been knowledgeable, polite, and helpful. If I need to add something to my policy, remove a policy, check coverage, or just ask a question I have gotten what I needed promptly. It has been a pleasure so far.
