I have used Ed Banning's tree service about four times now. As usual, he comes out on time and brings multiple workers. Whereas other tree services bring out one or two guys and the job takes all day. He trimmed back five trees and took out a dead tree and stump. All of this and the cleanup took less than three hours. We were referred to Ed Banning after 6 months of looking for a tree trimmer (and having many people bailing out on us.) We called for an estimate and he scheduled our appointment in less than 24 hours and arrived at the time he stated. His estimate was professional and detailed. He was extremely knowledgeable about the variety of trees and the best way to care for them...you can tell he has been doing this for a long time. One thing that stood out about Ed was that he gave us a copy of his proof of insurance and license when he gave us the estimate. Most of the other tree trimmers could not show us proof of insurance. He was able to come out three days later to do the job. The job was supposed to start at 8 am and he was at our door step at 8 am. He and his staff did our trees and our 2 neighbors' trees the same day. The entire job (including our neighbors) was done in 6 hours including the cleaning and hauling away of the trees. The cleaning was excellent...our backyard was cleaner than it has ever been. During the job, he would constantly update us on what's going on and made sure we were happy with the work. Based on the great Yelp reviews, gave Banning a call to see about getting stump grinding and a tree removed. Left a message on the machine. Got a call back a couple days later. Ed said he was a busy guy, but he might be able to drop by in a couple weeks to see what he could do for me. Never heard back from him after that. Since I had also contacted other tree service people who actually arranged appointments, I didn't bother to follow up. Guess my small job wasn't worth his time. We have a 65' Canary Island Pine tree that just unexpectedly dropped a branch in our backyard. With our two daughters always playing in the back yard this became an immediate concern that our tree may be dying or ill. I called Banning Tree Service based on other yelp reviews. Ed (the owner) showed up the same day and immediately recognized the tree as one he originally trimmed 20 years ago! (I'm sure they're like children to him.) He informed me that there was nothing wrong with the tree and that in fact it was so healthy that it was suspect to it's own weight and just needed to be thinned out. Ed and I agreed on a price (which was lower then other quotes I had received) and scheduled to have the job done the following week. To my pleasant surprise Ed and his team showed up one day the following week while I was at work and thinned the tree by 30%, making it a safe and happy tree again. Found Ed on Yelp and I could not remember reading any profile of any kind with so many positive reviews. I call Ed on a Sunday and he asnwered the phone. He came by the same day to do a free estimate. We discussed what needed to be done in detail. I had to trim 3 50ft high Monterrey Pines and one large Dutch Elm which had not been trimmed in 20 years. The estimate was very reasonable and competitive and I accepted on the spot. Ed and his team came 2 days later. They were there the whole day and did a fantastic job cutting and cleaning up. I felt sorry I had postponed this work for many years. The trees are beautiful, we get much more light in the house and all the neighbors are excited too with the extra light. We had Ed and his crew do some VERY sensitive tree work -- lowering the profile of an overgrown treeline that was blocking a magnificent view... while preserving the privacy afforded by the lower foliage. Also needed to trim back several trees entangling our power and phone lines. Ed asked me to stand on our upper balcony (and then check out other perspectives) while he personally climbed into the treetops and very selectively trimmed and shaped each tree. Once I set the ideal height for him, it was great to watch the view and the proper tree shape emerge as he meticulously cut away overgrowth and deadwood. His experience and care really showed... and the results are exactly what we hoped for. His 3-man crew also did a terrific job on the lower foliage and the several trees around our utility lines... even without my micromanagement. And then they chipped and hauled away every bit of the cuttings... even swept up the fallen leaves and dirt on the driveway, leaving the property far neater than they found it. I was very impressed today after Ed and his crew removed 3 medium sized trees for us. I wasn't sure what to expect but what I can say is that I was AMAZED. There was no evidence that they or the trees were ever there. My yard was actually cleaner after they left. Thanks for taking care of that extra pile of leaves I left. Rates are very competitive. Responsiveness excellent. Ed is very trustworthy and honest. I must note that one of the most professional things about Ed occurred at our first meeting. When he handed me the quote I was also provided with their proof of insurance (which I didn't even have to ask for it was just made available). I have hired Banning Tree Service a couple of times before and was always happy with the results, but this time Ed and his team really wowed me. I watched the entire operation (Ed made sure I was sitting far enough away and safe) as Ed and his team removed dead and dying branches 15-30+ feet up from the HUGE pine tree just over the fence in my neighbors yard. Ed and the team functioned with incredible skill and coordination from the worker up in the tree attaching ropes and sawing to Ed and the workers on the ground holding the ropes, lowering the cut branches (some massive), etc. He brought EXACTLY the right workers for THIS task and did a great job directing the project! He came to trim the tree, suggested we cut it. It cost about double to cut it instead of trimming so we went ahead and did it. Some of my vegatable plants were squelched but I suppose that can happen. Left it reasonably clean, we had to clear up later somewhat. Promised us mulch but we never saw it, didn't even give us the mulch from our own tree! read more

After getting some very high quotes from other companies to remove two large redwood trees, I gave Ed a call and received by far the lowest quote. Not only that, but over the course of the two months it took me to get the (heritage) tree removal permits, he remembered me, always returned my calls, and never changed his price. When it finally came time to do the work (today), he and his crew came out promptly, worked very hard, were careful to protect nearby plants, and did a great job of cleaning up. Ed came out and gave us a very reasonable quote for removing 3 fairly large trees. He even itemized each procedure separately(cut tree and haul away, stump grinding, haul away grindings). I have not actually used Ed Banning to trim any of our trees; my review is about his professionalism and helpfulness. I had Ed out to our property to give me an estimate for pruning a Monterey Cypress. His bid was competitive but, as it turns out, the tree is sick and will probably have to be removed. He was upfront with me and told me he didn't want the job because it was too complicated, but he went ahead and referred me to two other tree guys who do this sort of work. I've so far met with one of them who offered a very competitive bid for removal and I have a message in to the other. Ed arrived quickly and right on schedule. He is as professional as they come. Saw good review and decided to give them a try. Ed and his crew help me remove a bush and a laurel tree. The bush was done ok as his crew cut it near the ground level as promised; however, they did a horrible job on the laurel tree. The tree was removed but the stomp was nowhere near ground level as promised. Ed claims that they cannot cut into dirt but the truth is that the stomp is almost 2.5 feet above ground level and was covered with debris (not dirt!). Way to cut corners and induce a disgruntle customer! read more

Called 8 tree services for estimates on the removal of a large Redwood Tree near a high power line. Rec'd 6 estimates, 1 never called back and 1 declined the job. Liked that Ed has been in business over 35 years and had proof of license. Came out same day for the estimate and was very professional. Of the 6 estimates, 3 were more expensive and 2 less than Ed's. Ed's crew came on time within 2 days of my contracting them for the job. Great, polite crew who did the job in 1 day, hauled away all the tree debris and, as contracted, left the mulch from the ground-up stump for us. One of his workers also does fences, so, he was able to remove the fence which surrounded part of the tree and rebuild it for a very reasonable cost. Highly recommend Banning Tree Service. read more

I was thinking of how I would love to get rid of this tree because it's so big and drops tons of leaves. I knew I couldn't do that because it's a heritage tree. Mr. Banning gave me a quote faster than anyone else, the quote was extremely reasonable and he was able to take the tree down before any of the other guys could even get here to give me a quote. I gave him the job and I wasn't disappointed. He came with two guys and took the tree down in a little over an hour. I have many oaks in my showcase backyard and have had them shaped and pruned many times in the past 40 years, but no one has done as beautiful & careful a job as Ed. He took the effort to ok the job with my neighbors (one of whom liked the job so much he hired Ed to do his oaks). He was personally on site every minute directing the job - he used to do much of the work himself along with his other trimmers - and was the most communicative of any tree company I've used, asking my wife or me if I wanted certain areas attended to. His crew was very friendly and very careful not to disrupt the surrounding landscaping - we have a deer fence that could easily been damaged with the falling limbs, but they hauled down plywood sheets to teepee over the entire fence to protect it. Ed came out to give an estimate at exactly the pre-arranged time, and he and his crew were on time. His bid was the most fair of all companies I've used. Wow, I'm impressed! Really incredible, high quality tree service at an affordable price. I called for an estimate and the owner, Ed, showed up within the hour. We had an enormous amount of tree work to be done and Ed's bid was very fair and he made lots of really sound recommendations which indicated that he knew what he was doing and had lots of experience. So I hired him and two days later, he and his crew did an amazing job. Within a few hours, they tore out a 30 foot-tall tree (even the root), topped a gangly 50 foot-tall juniper, thinned out two 30 footers, dead-wooded two palms, and trimmed out about 300 pounds of ivy. The did all this while also being careful to save my delicate plants at the bases of the trees. They finished up by removing and chopping up all the debris, thoroughly raking the lawn, cleaning the patio and leaf-blowing the whole yard. I am incredibly impressed with their professionalism, attention to detail, speed, cleanliness, and high quality work. I will definitely be recommending Banning to others! read more

Last year we had just moved into our new home and was told by the inspectors that we had three trees that were literally inches away from the walls of the house. I had 4 or 5 estimates which greatly varied all over the place. Ed's was one of the lowest. What really impressed me was that he seemed very professional, punctual and then gave me a copy of his insurance coverage. He appeared to be very experienced, having worked in this business since he was really young and knew our neighborhood well. Amazing! Like the previous customer, I was thoroughly impressed with Ed Banning. He was very responsive, clear in his communications and courteous to pre-call and schedule ahead. We received a site visit the same day we called, and an estimate (with his insurance verification) the following day, when he returned and again walked through the property. We had 5 enormous oak trees that needed serious thinning. He was available to complete the work within a few days. His crew (of 5 men) was similarly professional, courteous, competent and tidy. They spent about 2-1/2 days on the job and left each day with a completely clean work area/yard. There's no replacement for the experience someone who has been trimming trees for 50 years can bring. Ed Banning Tree Service was excellent. I got his info from a co worker who had used him for some tree services. I had a HUGE pine tree in the front of my house which really needed some TLC (after us ignoring it for 6.5 yrs!!) I called Ed on Monday and he was at my house on Tuesday morning with a quote. The quote was less than what I expected. (I had another quote and it was $550 more than what he quoted me) I said.. great! When can you start? He was able to get his crew in the same Saturday. They were here on time on Sat. Did a lot of trimming and cutting of the tree. The tree looks great and now I have more light coming through to my house. Highly recommended. Was on time, did a good job removing the tree and cleaning. I appreciated that Mr. Banning gives you a prompt quote and is on the job site to supervise the process. My only complaint is that they moved the irrigation line (which is good so they didn't damage it), but didn't try to put it back in the same place and only told me everything was good and not broken. If I hadn't checked the line afterwards, we would have some dead plants in the yard. read more

Found Ed through Yelp. After I got multiple bids, Ed's was definitely the lowest (half of the highest bid). Since his license and insurance checked out and he got great reviews from yelp, we decided to hold our breathe and try it. He trimmed back 1/3 of our 50 foot cypress. It was a tricky job as the tree is right next a power line and multiple electrical and phone lines go through it. It took a crew of 6 and filled 2 huge trucks, and 8 hours but the tree looks great. They did a great job cleaning up the debris from our yard and our neighbors yard too. I would have given them 5 stars except the last heavy branch they cut off took out a small part of the redwood fence between our neighbors. They fixed the fence but the damage is still noticeable. Still would recommend them. Now I can sleep on dark and stormy nights without worrying the tree would fall and take out our house. read more

Banning Tree Service was another great find thanks to yelp. They came out to trim a number of oak trees which overhang my property. I was quite surprised when they started because their first step was to shield all of the windows that faced the tree. I've had those trees trimmed many times previously, and no tree service has ever taken the care they did to make sure that no branches or debris hit my windows. They cut back the tree the exact amount that I wanted, cleaned up thoroughly and charged a very reasonable price.
