While doing errands in Lynnwood, I browsed Yelp looking for new-to-me places to try and found Bantaba. It looked homier than Gold Coast in Seattle, and I felt adventurous and ventured into a "home turf" restaurant. Lol. This place is different, to say the least. This restaurant is more of a step down from an eatery. You order at the counter. They don't have menus. They don't have a website. They have photos on the wall without prices. When I asked about prices, she said, "I'll tell you." I had to keep my face straight, so I wouldn't giggle. We previewed on Yelp, so we had a decent idea of what we wanted. She didn't look like someone who was answering questions, so we avoided asking. The prices are very reasonable. That is their biggest selling point. We did remove the fried plantains when we learned that is $10.99. We knew it will be too much food anyway. Newbies probably shouldn't come here. The place is BUSY and SLOW. We arrived at 5pm on a Sat. They already have stacks of takeout boxes waiting for pickup. Only a group of two were ahead of us, but I later learned there were multiple takeout orders, too. We waited 45 minutes for our food. Everyone seems to know that's just how they roll. One guy came in with a thick book to wait for his takeout order. Their clientele is familiar with them and their food. Dine in isn't true dine in. It is sit-down to eat from the same takeout boxes using the same plastic utensils. No water service either, must buy water or beverage. No service actually, we bused our own table afterwards. Despite the good food, the long wait time is a turn-off. Overall, the food was flavorful, though the meats are charred to the dry side. Prices are good with big portions. The meats all have many bones; they would not suit those who favor the typical chicken breast, no bones meal. The Food: Benechin Chicken with Jollof rice, $15.99 - 4 Stars The Jollof rice caught my attention, which I learned about from the other African restaurant. Each cook has their own recipe. Theirs is tomato based with flavorful seasonings that has a slight kick. I liked it! The chicken is bone-in, well charred, slightly dry but not too bad. This dish is a two-days serving for me. AFRA Lamb, $18.99 - 3.5 Stars This dish comes with side of rice or salad. It is a generous pile that filled the little container. The lamb is also slightly dry, with lots of bones, but also lots of food. Hubby impressively finished his meal. He liked the meal, but the many bones exceeded his normally high tolerance. Meat Pies, $6.00 - 4.5 Stars I really like these flavorful meats and potatoes filled hand-sized pies. Well-seasoned with seasoning that I believe is unique to West Africa. I highly recommend ordering these.

    Corn slaw was great too.

Highly recommend this spot for all considering trying something new and curious. I was served by a nice woman named Mary, the food was prompt, flavorful, and a wonderful change in spots for take out. I'd be up for trying other dishes! Would highly recommend the plantains as a side with anything ordered. The ambiance was simple, clean, and pretty busy for a week night. Parking lot was full, and had plenty of parking. Seemed like a decent amount of to-go orders too.

    6. Afra Chicken

The portion size was so big! I loved the charred flavor of the chicken. They also gave a vinegar flavor sauce on top, so if you like sour it's definitely a good item to try! Such a unique flavor! It seems like they are a great hit as while I was there someone was asking them to cater their child's graduation. A great whole in the wall place.

Pretty good West African food. I tried the afra lamb and I enjoyed the taste and flavor. However the sauce the onions came with was not evenly mixed so the flavoring was not very consistent. The food came out in to go containers even if you are dining in. The wait was quite a bit (roughly 20-30 min) so just be ready for that.

Friendly staff and good food. However the service is so slow when it comes to getting the food. The lamb dish and the whole fried fish are delicious. However the rice and the salad are not good. I recommend you take fries instead because their fries is delicious. I am surprised they don't serve a nice African rice. Also try the Plantains , they are delicious. The prices are good too. They only serve curry out and don't allow indoor dining. I will definitely be back.

Really, really, really good. My favorites were the black eyed pea slaw and plantains (I'm not much of a meat eater), hubs loved the peanut butter beef (which IS really good), and the rest of the family loved the grilled lamb. The chicken Yada was also delicious- the flavor is almost a mix between sweet and sour and satay. Would absolutely eat here again and recommend to friends.

Food: This takes like nostalgia and some home cooking! I am of West African origin, and the food is legit! I'm all about the benechin with fish; it's very similar to the Senegalese national dish, which reminds me of my early traveling days. Portions are huge (easily two large meals when I have self-control) Tip: call in advance to see if they have what you want, or just be flexible, as they sometimes run out for the day. Service and ambiance: You don't go here for white glove service; you go for the food and a casual vibe. I love that this is a melting pot of others, like me, in search of good food; stepping into the restaurant gives me one of the more diverse eating experiences I've had in/near Seattle. This place feels authentic in what it is: a joint for some home cooked goodness. I'm a fan.

Ask the Community - Bantaba African Restaurant

    Is there indoor seating?

Yes, although the food still comes in take-out containers. Sitting inside does get you free bottled water, though.

    Do you guys have Fufu?

They don't. A popular question. See the long answer to another fufu question for more details on where to find fufu.

    Do you guys serve fufu?

The answer is No. A place called Spice Bridge in Tukwila is the only local place where I have seen fufu. See the other fufu answer for more details and a link.

What is a good dish for someone to try who has never had African cuisine before, preferably not spicy?

Almost nothing here is "spicy". But almost nothing here is bland, either. Try the Benechin with your choice of meat. The meat here tends to be marinated, and cooked well-done, with bone. For instance, lamb is cooked like Mexican Carne Asada...… Read more

    Are they black owned?

I found them by searching for black-owned restaurants on postmates and eatokra.

    Do they have vegetarian options?

They have fried plantains, rice, and several different legume based salads (black eyed pea slaw).

By now, we are minor 'pros' and know to bring some patience to West African restaurants. Entrees generally take about 30 minutes. To fill the gap, we order an appetizer. Service was "shy". The server approached cautiously always with a big smile. English was good enough but don't expect deep detail replies. Luckily, we are familiar with the food. The restaurant is modest in décor and narrow in shape. A cluster of tables in the back can sit a large group. The Food: Shrimp Pies, $8.99 - 5 Stars This is the only restaurant out of four that offers a shrimp version of the meat pie. Perfectly fried, these were really good! The server said this is his favorite amongst the pies. Lamb Dibi, $21.99 - 4.5 Stars Well-seasoned lamb pieces are well grilled. It comes with a choice of starch; the plantain was great. A surprising delight is the dressing on the onions. Yummy. Grilled Branzino, $25 - 4.5 Stars Not for the faint of heart, this is a whole fish grilled. Honestly, I think the rest of world eats whole fish while US and Canada eat filets only. They made sure to give us the two inches of tail that had broken off. I have to admit I was amused. Perfectly cooked, hubby picked this fish clean. The sweet potato fries are also very good. Jollof Rice with Chicken, $18 - 5 Stars Ever since I learned jollof rice is every family's own recipe from our first W. African restaurant, I have ordered it from all others to try each variant. The Dijah version has a good chewy rice that is superbly well seasoned. The chicken is also very well prepared and flavored. Theirs might be my new favorite. I ordered it to go and sampled a bit at the restaurant. The 5 Stars overall rating is focused on the food. Don't expect fine dining 'ambiance'.

Don't get me wrong, the food tasted amazing, the portion sizes are great, and the price was justified. However, the negatives outweigh the positives for this restaurant. Me and 3 other people came in, and the store was empty. We ordered 3 okra soups, 1 with chicken, 2 with lamb, and 1 jollof rice chicken plate. The first plate took about 40 minutes to come out, which was an egusi soup to which we had not ordered. We still had to wait longer for all of our food to come out. Upon my food arriving, I noticed there was a hair in the Saran Wrap of the fufu, making contact with my food. Because we had already waited so long for our food to come out, I didn't bother to mention it to the worker. Comparing Jollof Hub to Pass D Jollof, this place has better portion sizes and better pricing. It was $26 for okra soup that includes protein and 2 portions of fufu whilst PDJ charges $34 for okra soup, you have to pay extra for protein, and 1 portion of fufu. That said, I don't think I'd come back here due to the food safety issue.

Rating: 3.5 Stars. Rounding up to support a small business…read more Jollof Hub West African Cuisines in Shoreline is the third west Africa restaurant in our area that we visited. It ranks the third out of the three (sorry). They focus on Gambia, Senegal, and Nigeria. The west Africa region has their own set of spices that are uniquely flavored and so delicious. Their meats are perhaps cut traditionally - coarsely butchered with lots of bones (again, sorry). The interior of the restaurant is modestly decorated with tables that can support a group. The service is very kind though his English is limited; I did more googling afterwards to answer my questions. Business was very slow, not much take-out orders, either. One server covered two tables plus two takeouts during the time we were there on a Saturday night. I hope business picks up. They have their own parking lot with more spaces in the back. The Food: Lamb Afar, with vermicelli, $23.99 - 4 Stars The meat is very well seasoned and tender. It is difficult to sort the meat from the bones. Just be aware this is more of a hands-on dish vs a fork and knife dish. Serving size is so gigantic that hubby didn't finish, which is a rare phenomenon. This may have been a 3.5 Stars dish, but due to the portion, rounded up. Benachin (Jollof rice), $22.99 - 2.5 Stars I asked the server which is his favorite dish, and he named this one. The Jollof rice recipe is commonly the focus and signature of a restaurant or of a household. Both their rice and the meat are drier than I expected. We have had better versions of the Jollof rice elsewhere. I would have preferred more tender meat also. Most of this went home to be modified (which turned out great!). Meat Pies, $7 - 4.5 Stars I have found meat pies at West African and at soul food restaurants. I personally enjoy the seasonings used in the West African versions better. These are impeccably seasoned with a kick and perfectly fried. I preferred this dish over my entrée for sure.

Unfortunately, our experience was incredibly disappointing. We arrived at 8:00 p.m. and didn't receive our food until after 10:00 p.m. Keep in mind the restaurant closes at 9:00 p.m., so we even watched them lock the doors while we were still waiting. There was only one other table of four people dining, and it appeared they had also been waiting a long time for their food. When we finally realized we needed to get home to relieve our babysitter, we asked our server to pack our meals to go. Instead of apologizing for the two-hour wait, he told us we "should have come earlier." We reminded him that we had arrived two hours before and had no reason to expect such a long delay. He showed no empathy or accountability. We still tried to stay positive, hoping the food would at least live up to the hype. Unfortunately, when we got home, we found the dishes to be overwhelmingly salty. We understand that delays can happen, but poor communication and a complete lack of customer service turned what should have been a special evening into a frustrating experience. We left feeling disappointed and unlikely to return.

Yeah, I know a truck can only have so many different items, but I would eat here all the time. In long We've gotten delivery and takeout here a few times. My buddy L tried it once and I think he's gotten it once a week ever since. It's addictive! You basically have your choice among chicken, rice, and waffles. They nail everything. The chicken comes in big pieces--I really don't think they're getting them from the same place most supermarkets get their chicken. One example, the drumsticks here are big and heavy. Most places they're closer to a wing in size. Even with the heftier portions, everything's always cooked perfectly. Steaming hot (admittedly, we don't live far away), never dried out anywhere at all. Nice skin that's starting to get a little crisp but still holds some chewiness. They really season it, too--lots of flavors nobody else gets on their chicken. A little bit of spicy warmth but not too challenging if you can handle at least a little hot sauce now and then. The rice is very small-grained, tasty stuff. Not super filling (smallish portion). The waffles are sweet and chewy. They send syrup for the waffles, hot sauce for the bird. Now I'm craving it again just thinking through how to describe it. Thankfully there are a couple pieces in the fridge still.
