I was imagining a thick curry sauce inside but it was more like curry powder/flavour added to the meat so the broth was still soupy and very flavourful. The skin was a little thicker than what I prefer for a soup dumplings but overall it was delicious. Today, they were out of the pork soup dumplings so we tried the beef. For us, we prefer pork because the beef was a bit tough compared to pork and flavour-wise, not what we're used to. The mini soup dumplings were a bite-sized Burt's of flavour. Nice amount of soup inside. One of our favourites was the fried tofu. It came out freshly fried and crispy. The sauce was sweet and sour (vinegar) with chillies. The sauce at the bottom made it for us! We really liked the chewy texture of the noodles in the Dan Dan noodles. It wasn't too spiced so the kids were able to enjoy it as well. I was looking for an affordable spot in North York when I came across Bao House. I recognized the name from their downtown location and Instagram but had never actually tried it before. Given how pricey eating out in Toronto can be, I was hoping this would be a good find, and I'm happy to say it was! We ordered the Pork Pot Stickers, Steamed Pork Soup Dumplings, Spicy Braised Beef Soup Noodles, Spicy Deep Fried Tofu, and Chicken Corn Dumplings. The noodle soup and tofu were the clear highlights. The tofu, in particular, stood out. The sauce was a perfect mix of sweet, spicy, and savoury, while the tofu itself was crispy on the outside and tender inside. The noodle soup was also solid. I'm not usually a fan of Szechuan peppercorns, but aside from that, it was flavourful and generously portioned. One order could easily serve two people with leftovers. The dumplings, unfortunately, were less impressive. The pot stickers had a good texture, but the filling needed more seasoning. The soup dumplings seemed machine-made, and while they weren't bad, they weren't anything special either. The wrappers were thicker than expected and absorbed too much of the soup. One small hack we found was dipping the dumplings in the tofu sauce, which helped add more flavour! Service was great. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and they even offer bibs and aprons for those who tend to get splashy with their soup dumplings or noodle bowls, which was a nice touch. The biggest plus was the price. In a city where dinner for two can easily cost over $100 and still leave you hungry, this entire meal was under $40, and we had leftovers (which we boxed up but unfortunately forgot to take with us). To be fair, this was during the temporary HST relief period and before tip, but even outside of that, the value is hard to beat. While this isn't the best Chinese food in Toronto, it is tasty, satisfying, and incredibly affordable. They don't have a large menu, but the key items are their buns, soup dumplings, casseroles, and noodles. It's a nice brunch or lunch place, I'm not sure I'd eat here for dinner. We ordered the braised beef soup noodles ($9.99), crispy pork and meatball casserole ($9.99), and steamed pork soup dumplings ($4.99). The braised beef noodles were out of this world - so flavourful! For only $10, there was a good amount of meat and soup and just the right level of spice. I didn't get to try the casserole, but it looked good. I had ordered 2 items, a noodles and a cold chicken dish. I noted that the cold dish was already sitting on the counter and my noodles were not ready. So I waited.... and waited... and waited... And watched as some other diners got their noodles and other dishes served. The staff saw me but did not really check with the kitchen. Seems like they prioritized dine-in patrons. Their menu isn't much, with 5-6 choices to choose from in each category- bao/dumplings, casseroles, noodles, cold dish, and drinks. The price point is fairly reasonable- either $4.99 or $9.99, and drinks are $1.99 or $2.99. We have tried one dish from each category, and here are our thoughts... FOOD: - steamed pork soup dumplings: also known as XiaoLongBao (XLB)... Priced at $4.99, you get 6 decent-sized dumplings with thin wrapping and fairly juicy. - pan-fried mini soup dumplings: Priced at $9.99, you get 16 pcs of cute little bite-sized XLB, and it also comes with malt vinegar and sweet chili sauce. I found these dumplings were juicier than regular XLB, each bite was burst with juicy flavors. Running out of options where to have a quiet delicious dinner, then why not go back to basics. New place in town just recently opened very clean ample lighting with simple lines decorations. Waiting time for a table is 15 mins if for 2 diners and for more than 4 it will take you more than 30 mins unless you don't mind sitting on the bar. Menu is straight forward however with photos it would be helpful. I think we have ordered more than half what's on the menu. I find the noodles in the House Special and Braised Beef too soft for my liking in my opinion and they use the same dough batter for the steamed buns dumplings and noodles. The pork fillings are tasty and they serve the food in the right temperature so you don't burn your mouth (not too hot not too cold just like Goldilocks and the 3 bears). Don't forget to save the leftover sauce when you order the House Special Noodles it' will come very handy using the leftover as dipping sauce for your dumplings on top of the black vinegar and chili oil. I was very excited to try the new location. Food tasted good. Although peas were raw (frozen peas not boiled all the way). Main issue: they had maybe only 3 main items that were vegetarian/vegan, and the main item that my group was looking forward to, the dumplings, were sold out. It took 4-5 minutes after we had already ordered for them to come back and say "we're sold out" so we were forced to go with the only other option -- vegan casserole version of the chicken casserole, which was the same price even though it was without meat, and in which the peas were raw.
