They have everything I love: hot and sour soup, Dan Dan noodles (hot and spicy with peanut sauce noodle), steamed dumplings (XLB), pan-fried dumplings, deep-fried dough with condensed milk, and spicy dumplings in hot oil, and the list goes on. Everything tastes super authentic and they are all really well made! Big shoutout to the smoked pork with wrap item. The smoky flavor is simply amazing, and it has a great balance of fatty pork with warm oven-baked wraps. And then finish with the egg white red bean puff as the must-have dessert. This is a nice little dumpling spot in Times Square at Leslie and Highway 7 in Richmond Hill. I was pleasantly surprised at the experience. We ordered 1. Steamed seafood dumplings 2. Hot and sour soup 3. Sliced beef wrap For the dumplings, you could tell they were homemade and they were delectable. The skin was soft and thin and fresh. And the filling was awesome. For the hot and sour soup, the ingredients were crisp showing the freshness of the ingredients. It too was awesome. For the beef wrap, it was ok, probably wouldn't order again as it came out cold. This is our go to spot for dumplings over the past ten years. The place used to be more run down but they renovated. Food is consistent and some dishes better than others. The dumplings are always solid including the steamed and pan fry options. The hot and sour soup is also good. As well as the green onion pancake, cold noodle with sesame sauce, stir fry noodle, and garlic pork. Not a huge fan of the beef braised noodle - the soup wasn't good and bland. And the wonton seaweed soup also didn't have a lot of flavours to it. I came with a group of 7 people and came to around $25 per person after tips and tax. It is a real hidden gem in Richmond Hill. This kind of restaurant is my favourite. It's not one of those "modern" Chinese restaurants, which look fancy but lack soul. This is not a new restaurant; it has been there for decades. How did I know this restaurant? By social media! The son of the founder sneakily filmed himself learning how to manage and run the restaurant for 100 days, in order to take over the restaurant from his father, so that his father can retire with peace of mind. Now, let's talk about the food. I am a total dumpling lover. Back in grad school, I literally ate dumplings for lunch every single day for three months, so I'd say I'm qualified to judge! I'm giving theirs a solid 9/10. Came here to enjoy some soup dumplings and try other things. The beans and braised beef noodle soup came out first and were both spicy (for me) but delicious! We ordered a bunch of soup dumplings, steamed dumplings and pan fried ones and all of them were really good. We also got a green onion pancake, which is by far my favorite one! By the time I finished my 3 dishes, tea and water and was packing up take-home, there were 13 items cluttering the table and very much in the way of my efforts to pay and leave. Contrary to one review I read, service was indifferent and friendliness (it is reputed to be a family business) nowhere to be seen. One steaming platter arrived without a serving spoon, forcing me to reach for the chopsticks and china soup spoon I had eaten from. My request for hoisin sauce was mistaken for hot sauce. My ordered hot and sour soup, steamed pork and leek dumplings, and moo shu pork (wrappers extra for $5), were tasty and served very hot. Staff were pleasant and efficient, maybe mediocre food affected by supply/food turnover issues caused by Covid restrictions, I do hope they get their act together soon now that restrictions have been lifted. Salty tofu soup bland and flavorless, no crunch to the very minimal pickled vegetables. maybe sitting in soup/kitchen for days. Same with the fried dough rice roll, pickled vegetables were hardly present, mushy and flavorless. This is truly a neighbourhood gem!! The parking lot at Times Square is insane but with some luck we got in and got out in no time. We actually came the first time trying to lunch set (protein + rice + soup or soy milk for $7.99!!) and xiao long bao (dumplings with soup inside - $6.50 for 6) and a steamed chives/pork dumpling ($5.50 for 10). Surprisingly I fell in love with the cheapest item. The dumpling "shell" was super chewy and there was a bit of soup in each one! FYI: Their outside sign is missing a "N" so it says "Norther Dumpling" SERVICE: I usually come here with my in-laws so I'm not sure if the workers are good with their English. They seem really kind though because my mother in-law is always laughing with them and trying to make our toddlers laugh. FOOD/PRICE: Food comes out pretty fast here. We always order steamed dumplings, pan fried dumplings, a noodle dish (for the kids), and leek pancake. I've tasted better dumplings before so this place pretty much just satisfies my dumplings cravings and it's close by to my house. I think the price is decent too, but it's best to just order dumplings from here and really nothing more. OVERALL: I find the food pretty mediocre. Nothing more to it. Decided to come back here cause of my recent yelp review of the day. I was so excited to come back for some soup dumplings. Sadly this visit was not even half as good as I remembered it to be! As you can see I've only given it a 2 star vs 4 stars before. When we got here today, it was busy. All the tables were full and luckily we didn't wait long. Before we got seated at our table, the woman who seemed to be the owner, was wiping the floor and laying newspaper on the floor. Odd. And told us to sit there with the wet floor where she had the newspaper. Gross. But whatever just newspaper. Luckily I wasn't wearing any expensive shoes I guess. Moving on, the food was nothing like how I remembered it to be. The pork filled soup dumplings XLB was salty. Don't even get me started on the shanghai fried rice cakes. When we got the plate .. there were barely any food on there. The portion was VERY small. And taste wise it was super bland. Also doesn't Shanghai style have minced pork? Well they were no where to be found and I didn't have to look too hard considering the amount of food there was. The steamed leek and pork dumplings were okay, again tasted salty. A staple in the Times Square shopping mall, Northern Dumpling Kitchen is a great option for dumplings, noodles and various Chinese dishes with decent prices. The dan dan noodles tasted great, the soup base was both spicy and nutty. The sticky rice which had Chinese fried dough in the middle can be made either sweet or savory. The environment was fairly outdated but my main gripe with this restaurant was the service. Typically when you pay with cash, the staff will return with change that makes it easy to tip. However, the change came back which forced me to tip almost 30%. When the staff realized that I was not going to tip 30% for average service, she insisted to take the change back so she can break it out in smaller amounts. It quenches thirst and also helps cool you down if you're having spicy food! On the other hand, if you order the HOT soybean milk... WARNING: It is not what you think it is lol. It comes in a big bowl with added ingredients in it lol. If you feel adventurous, I say go for it ;) The Leek & Pork is one of the classic dumpling fillings. The dumplings were tender and delicious. The Shanghainese fried noodles was not as oily and up to the standard *thumbs up*. The sticky rice roll (order the salty one!) seemed simpler compared to those restaurants where they jam pack it with all the ingredients. I enjoyed this lighter version... at least I can eat more! Came here for a quick lunch on a Sunday. Enjoyed the no frills service and food. The place is small but very comfortable. Our waiter came really quickly and each of the for orders came really quick. My favourite is the beef pancake. It's salty and with lots of sauce, just like how a beef pancake should be! The soup dumpling xiao long bao is awesome. In some places, there is no soup when I bite into my soup dumpling. But this xiao long bao has very thin dough skin and lots of soup inside! I would say this place is good if you want something more on the greasy side. The shanghai dumplings, leek and pork dumplings, and beef fried dumplings all tasted pretty similar. The pan fried dumplings were super oily, and the steamed ones fell flat in flavour. The pork had this distinctive taste that may come out as not fresh. Also had the shanghai style jya jang mein and that was decent. Good soy sauce flavour and the cucumbers balanced well with the heavy sauce. Their spring onion pancakes were also decent. Surprisingly less oily than the pan fried dumplings. Could use more spring onion taste. A good place for hangover meals but other than that I wouldn't go back. Maybe it's the things I ordered but for the restaurant to have the word 'dumplings' in it I would've assumed that their dumplings would be the star. Sadly it wasn't. One of the better quality dumpling places in Richmond Hill. The food here is delicious while the owners here are definitely great to interact with; extremely nice. The steamed and pan fried dumplings were good! Meat was flavourful and it went very well with chilli oil, no complaints here. The wonton soup was very bland, the soup almost tasted like just boiled water. The wontons itself were not bad though. The xiao long bao was very disappointing and below average compared to most other dumplings joints. The skin was very thick and it didn't have much soup inside. I also thought it was very gross that they placed the bamboo steamer, with the xiao long bao inside, on a dirty plate. Yes the xlb is in the bamboo steamer and lined with parchment paper and technically not touching the plate at all, however that is still unacceptable. The dumplings were not freshly steam at the time. While the wrappers were thin, the juice was absorbed by the wrapper due to its lack of freshness. My parents were disappointed in their dumplings.
