I'd heard about Bar Chinois for awhile now and was eager to experience it while celebrating with friends. My experience was solid but not particularly remarkable. I ordered the Chinois Mule, Red Chili Wontons, and Char Siu Chicken. Our service that night was slow and our waitress did not check on us very often. The persiflage was refreshing as well if you love Aperol, get it. Their pork bao buns and garlic noodles were amazing but I'd get it without the fried chicken. The bartender was super cool and attentive for how busy it was, he knew how to run the bar. It's a very small spot and it gets crowded quick so make sure to make a reso ahead of time or show up right when it opens. I came here for the first time with a couple of girl friends for their happy hour and left thoroughly unimpressed. If the westernization and appropriation of Chinese culture and cuisine at this restaurant wasn't bad enough on its own, it certainly had a major negative impact on the food as well. The pork dumplings literally had nothing else in them but unseasoned pork, and the vegetable dumplings tasted like they threw a bunch of random greens in them that don't go together. There's no reason for dumplings to ever have whole edamame in them, by the way. The drinks aka the main point of our visit also left a lot to be desired. I'm a huge proponent of fun and strong cocktails, but the highly-recommended Maximilian and Peak Bloom both tasted cheap and inedible. The black lime salt did not do the margarita mix any favors and the latter tasted like straight perfume. The only reason I am adding an extra star is because our waiter was perfectly lovely. He was super attentive and helpful, even being very concerned about the bug bites that our fellow outdoor diners and us were receiving. Otherwise, I will not be patronizing this place or any other restaurant that charades Asian cuisine without doing it any justice. read more

The service, especially from the bartenders, was impeccable. Extremely friendly and helpful. The ambiance of the restaurant was great -- dimly lit, not too loud but still very social, cool decor. The restaurant was a good size, good blend of cozy and intimate while also feeling somewhat bustling and social. The food, however, was somewhat disappointing. We were eager to try the Gyoza de Boeuf, a recommendation from our waiter. Upon the first taste, we were quite disappointed and did not finish them. They just were lacking a depth of flavor. This issue remained consistent through the rest of our meal. Every dish we tried was ubiquitously way too sweet and lacked dimension. We ordered the Brussels sprouts (favorite dish of them all), walnut shrimp, gyoza de boeuf (sent back), salmon rice, garlic noodles, and Lu rao fan. The ambiance is that of a bar, so it's aptly named. If you want lower key dining, consider an outdoor seating area. The interior is moderately loud and half of the seats are at the bar or closely against it. The service is great, but the food leaves something to be desired. As someone who frequently eats Asian cuisine, I left this place feeling underwhelmed and uncomfortable with how much butter and oil was added to the entrees and dim sum. The dishes lacked umami and salt, and were all a touch too sweet. Odd flavor combination. I would not dine here again, but can't speak for the quality of the cocktails. A new entrant in the DC restaurant pantheon. The food, the drink, and the atmosphere are all absolutely spot on. They also have a spectacular happy hour, from 5-7, even on Saturdays! The deal is half off all cocktails, and these are great cocktails. They cost around $15-16 apiece, so half off is a real steal. One of their most popular is frose, which is pink and ice cold, but it's just ok. I recommend one of their booze-forward options instead. The au pear affair, which is a mix of whiskey and spiced pear liquer with a little nocino walnut liquer, is a new favorite. This is one good enough to go back for round 2 if you dare because it does pack a punch. During happy hour, they also offer dollar dumplings, which are nice. I tried a few non-happy hour food options as well. The karaage is a classic that they do well, and the garlic noodles with shrimp hits the spot, too. Everything satisfied. I just wish I had room for more, but this is a spot I will be back to try again and again. read more

We ordered the speciality ones not knowing that they weren't $1 and the waiter knew we were trying to get the $1 ones. He was no help when we asked to clarify on the receipt. Came here for Restaurant Week and it was awesome! The crab Rangoon is so delicious. I would come back just for the Rangoon. It's perfectly crispy with a flavorful crab and cream cheese filling. The garlic and chives gao had a more subtle flavor and paired great with its sauce. It is an interesting chewy cube, but the appetizer paled in comparison to the crab Rangoon. The duck confit Benedict was deliciously savory. The pickled salad was so refreshing and balanced the heaviness of the eggs and duck. Needless to say I cleaned my plate. The matcha crème brûlée tasted great. The torched sugar top was too sweet for me but the rest of it was perfect. read more

I this this restaurant was so cute and kind of tucked away a little. My server was great at explaining everything to me and the drinks were simple, but good. I think this place is great for a quick bite to eat, because I was kind of still hungry afterwards. I also think this restaurant Chinese restaurant with French inspiration, which I didn't understand the connection, but maybe there are more items that meet the fusion definition that I didn't try yet! read more

The lighting in this restaurant is a bit dark, but I promise you won't be disappointed eating by faith and not sight. We ordered multiple plates to share with the table and repeatedly asked our waiter to double everything!! The garlic noodles made us come back and order Uber eats within the month, the happy hour dumplings are the perfect appetizer (the pork and veggie are best), and the crispy chicken requires you to order 2 servings because of how quickly you'll go through the first. They have a 1.5 hour table time, but the food comes out so quick you won't notice how much you've eaten in an hour. Enjoyed the vibe here. The food is decent. We tried the Gyoza de Boeuf and Red Chili Wontons for our appetizers. The wonton broth was super spicy but very flavorful. My friend enjoyed the Char Siu Chicken Rice. I tried the Chili Garlic Fish and the batter was a bit more bland than I expected but the fish was crispy. The server was on point. We enjoyed the Cremant brut and the desserts. We tried but the crème brûlée and chocolate cheesecake. They were both sweet but I have a preference for chocolate and enjoyed that option more. Such a limited menu, that if there are 4 of you, you can pretty much try every thing. We had about 10-12 items between us and everything was excellent and served fresh and hot! Looking at the menu, the items are pretty much what you'd expect at most small plate/dim sum places, but I think the taste of everything was excellent. Service was very friendly even when they were very busy, and we got our food pretty quickly. Ambiance - It was a bit loud in there, not the music, but the people. OK, this place is pretty legit. Great business model starting off with good dumpling and drink specials for Happy Hour, and pretty modernized Chinese cuisine - meaning its probably something I may conceptualize if I were opening a restaurant myself. Service - very attentive, all needs were generally met in a timely manner but just needed basics laid down first (table missed some napkins and chopsticks). Food - chicken dumplings steamed was probably my favorite and it's a fair deal for $4 for 4 at a nice restaurant as it's got a good proportion of filling to dough ratio and well seasoned, not dry. The port dumplings fried seemed to miss the mark as it was slightly over cooked. The salt and pepper shrimp was just a bit of a poor value as it only had 4 for $12. The 1970 noodles (tasty with strong garlic flavor) were also served on a small plate and then I only just realized that this is like Tapas. read more

Came on a Saturday night for dinner and overall had a great time! The food was tasty all around and perfect for sharing. We had the beef gyoza, shumai, pork belly bao, shrimp dumplings, and crab rangoon. The crab rangoon and beef gyoza SLAPPED. The beef gyoza was a fried dumpling and tasted like a scrumptious juicy empanada. Finished with the matcha creme brulee which was just okay. The drinks were hit or miss for me. The first drink I had, the "au pear" was far too strong for me, the type of drink that burns all the way down your throat. They were very gracious about letting me send it back. Opted for a daiquiri instead which wasn't bad but wasn't my favorite. The last drink I opted for was a mezcal drink which was yummy but I think would've worked better over ice than in a coup glass. The service was FAST. You only have 90 for the table (so they say, they don't actually enforce this) and they bring out drinks and plates within 5-10 minutes of ordering which is great. The ambience is really dark and sexy with red neon lights. The perfect spot for a date though it is super loud in here so you so have to yell go talk a little. Overall would definitely come back but probably wouldn't do a full dinner here again. This place definitely lends itself more to happy hour or date or the place you start for small apps before a night out. Stopped by inside for their happy hour and let me tell you if you like dumplings, this place is WORTH IT. We had a couple drinks which were good but weren't able to order any of their other food. Will definitely be going back for more in the future. We came here for Sunday brunch. There was three in our party. We ordered the breakfast fried rice, red chili wontons, wontons soup, Shumai, and a pot of tea. Everything was delicious, and full of flavor. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. The vibe was also pretty cool; they had a DJ spinning. Unfortunately, the SERVICE was lacking. Everything was great until we got the bill. We were surprised to see that we got charged for three pots of tea when we ordered one. When we questioned the waiter about it, he said -- the pot charge was per person. Needless to say that made no sense at all according to the menu, and the fact that we only received one pot (receipt attached). We requested they remove the two extra pots from our bill. Uggh. We were seated promptly and our awesome waitress Emily took our order fast since the kitchen was closing at 11pm. My entree was the garlic noodle with shrimp and it was a knockout. So much flavor in those noodles, I had to do a double take. Kinda sweet. And the shrimp was so juicy and tasted very fresh. We also tried the beef gyoza but I wasn't the biggest fan of that. Sat at the bar on a Tuesday at 5pm. Their happy hour seemed solid - 1/2 price cocktails and $1 dumplings - but I didn't take advantage of either so can't vouch for taste. Instead, I had a glass of champagne, crab Rangoon, karaage, spicy chili wontons, + pork belly bao. Pork belly boa was dry/bland, so I sent it back. BUT, everything else was GREAT. My favorite was the crab rangoon but the spicy wontons and karaage were flavorful and absolutely worth a reorder in the future.
