Had a flight delay at South Bend International and decided to grab a bite at BarFly Café. I ordered the chili cheese fries and honestly--for airport food--they were darn good. The fries were crispy, the chili had great flavor, and the portion was solid. It totally hit the spot while I waited. I'll definitely stop by again next time I'm here to try more off the menu. If you're on your way out of the South Bend area and you have to go through the International airport, you might as well stop off at the Bar Fly and get a pre-flight drink and a beverage. They have a full bar for those of us that'll pau a bloody maría beforehand and coffee for those who won't. Also, if you want a muffin or other breakfast options, they're available. The ambiance is strictly airport, even to include what looks like a side of an airplane as decor for the bar. If you tip well the bartender will take care of you. This is the only restaurant in the South Bend airport so I would expect it to offer more of a variety of food. There is an area for sitting after you've ordered and gotten your food. There are a few bar seats if you want to order anything from the bar. I don't know if the menu was limited due to covid or if this is the usual. I don't eat meat often and again, not much of a selection. As far as hot food: a few sandwiches, small boneless chicken wings, mozarella sticks and fries. Cold chicken and tuna salad on croissant. These sandwiches are HUGE and if you like your tuna salad with mostly Mayo and a little bit of tuna this is a winner. Muffins, oatmeal in a cup also options. Coffee, fountain drinks and bottled beverages are sold. You can also make purchases from the South Bend Chocolate Factory next door. Although there's a mask mandate throughout the airport, the staff in the restaurant did not wear them over their mouth and nose but their chins were definitely covered. Service was good. Area by the fountain drinks could have been cleaned better. Next time I come home for a visit I'll eat well before I leave for the airport. read more

The staff is great the food. Reminds me of high school cafeteria You would think the food would be something that represents the food of the area not a job site food truck. So many possibilities That are missed here So stop and grab something before you arrive. read more

Terrible service... I ordered an iced coffee for $3.50, paid $2 extra to add flavoring and cream. Short blonde lady with glasses ringing people up spoke to me like I was a child when I asked for just a splash of cream with that "the creamer is self serve." She handed me the coffee and didnt add any of the caramel flavor (which is not self serve) so I asked to have it added... Another lady with dark curly hair acted like I was asking for her to wash my feet because I interrupted her laughing conversation with another worker behind the counter to ask for my order to be corrected. I've been here countless times and it's usually a great experience... they clearly need new employees - get a new job if you can't even deal with a pleasant customer. read more

I wanted breakfast and coffee. Just as simple as that. You have to order your coffee at one window and your food at a different Window, you can pay for both but only at the coffee one where you cannot see the food menu. Right in front of me the food server said to another employee evidently he's not gonna eat because he doesn't know how to order food. I just got a coffee and told him I'm not ordering food because I'm not going to deal with her. This is the only place to get food after you go through security. Ordered a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese and a chai latte at 6:15am. 6:47am I get a lukewarm latte and a warm (not toasted) bagel. 3 women behind the counter. Really ladies? REALLY?? Woman at food counter by the grill was hacking away moist disgusting cough and was not wearing a mask. WTH? Have you heard of COVID or the Flu?? A great place to grab a sandwich, salad or cocktail before embarking on your journey. They have a family dining area and a bar where you can grab a cocktail, including my favorite, a Bloody Mary bar with add-ons for every taste such as skewers of cheese, cocktail onions, celery, spices, hot sauces, and pickled Hungarian peppers. The bar staff is always helpful in helping to decipher what is announced over the loud speaker for flight arrivals and departures. I'm sorry for cross-posting this on the SBN page, but as this is the only restaurant in the airport, I didn't bother to remember the name of the place. I'm adding an extra star for the well-lit and well-designed restaurant. There's literally a outlet to EVERY table. It's one of those things that you'd appreciate during flight delays. There are workstations right across the restaurant provided by the airport but maybe it's the energy-saving lights? They look pretty gloomy. Back to the review of the place. Despite the fact that this joint has a virtual monopoly on food past security, the food's pretty darn good. In fact, I'm saying now until I've had better: it's got the BEST BLT and fries in South Bend. No kidding. Made fresh, plenty of thick cut bacon, and the fries. OMG, those fries are piping hot and meaty and crispy and just really good because they deep fry them when you place the order. Yes, it costs an arm n leg because you're paying the airport premium, but you'd pay the same at ORD and it'd taste pretty meh. I've yet tried burgers yet, that's next on my list. I was told that they're made fresh as well, but they take 15-20 minutes and I wasn't patient enough to wait, I'll return to update when I do. So these are the pros, the cons? Skip the coffee/espresso here. Even if you're just dead tired, wait until you board your flight to get your caffeine fix. I can't describe what the issue was, maybe because the beans were burnt? I don't know, it just tasted off. I've gotten the latte, took three sips and chucked it. Then I got the coffee, took a sip and chucked that too. If they've improved, please let me know. read more
