I live in the neighborhood, and while this is be best bar on Foster - hands down... It's just so smokey! The back smoking patio has some major draft issues into the place. So if anyone is smoking outside, they might as well be smoking inside. Legally, smoking should be taking place 10 feet from any bar door, and the smoking patio here does not comply. If second hand smoke doesn't bother you like it does me - the place is a true gem. A huge selection of beers, and fantastic food to boot. It's a great place to catch a Blazer's game, I just wish the smoke didn't leave me feeling ill. Food & Beer/Spirit Selection: 5 stars for sure... But management, please figure out a better ventilation situation for the smokers! read more

Can hold space for a group of 15 as well as couples on a first date. More Yang than Yin with boys who don't wear essential oils as deodorant. Love that. Girls with thick, slouchy knit hats. Everyone with big glasses. Love that. 'Cause it isn't hipster make me puke, but hipster I am from La Pine, OR and I had to walk home from school on dirt roads hipster. Yeah. It does have two fairly loud TV screens right at the bar, which, under certain conditions might turn it into more sports bar then you want, but you can also tune it out while you sip on their super beer selection. I love this place. The food is a twist of gyro/American/Mexican. The gyro nachos are on happy hour and bomb. I highly suggest the gyro burger which is a normal burger but has gyro strips and tzatziki sauce instead of normal mayo, ketchup and mustard. The happy hours are frequent music is amazing. We've been here a few times and really enjoyed it. Great modern decorations inside, always good music playing, and the food and drinks are good. It's a little loud and rough right next to Foster, but what the hell. Staff have been great each time we've been in and I love me a Gyro - doesn't really seem like a Gyro place, but who cares... they're good! read more

We came here on a weekday trying to grab happy hour and it was pretty busy. The line gets very long so make sure to order all the food you want then otherwise you'll be waiting 45+ minutes for food. We ordered the Korean wings which came with a shot and a beer for only $15! (It also comes with rice) The wings were crispy on the outside and the chicken was really moist on the inside. I really don't understand how this bar can cook their chicken wings better than places that actually specializes in wings. You also get the whole chicken wing. I also got the chicken kabob & hummus plate and the chicken was a little dry and the pita wasn't anything special. The Dragonfruit cider from Atlas was really good though! Service was nice and a very casual place. You do seat yourself after you order and they have self serve water. They do have patio seating in the back and front but like I said if you come for happy hour on a nice day expect it to be busy. read more

Came here on a Friday right when they opened and the bar filled up super quick. Bartender was really friendly and knowledgeable. Beer/cider/cocktail options are some of the best in the neighborhood. Some friends of mine invited me down to this place almost a month ago, at first I wasn't to thrilled because I do NOT like the bar scenes its not my preference anymore as I've out grown them. BAR MAVEN is my ONLY exception!!!! It's so bizarre to explain the place!! It's a Upscale, Hipster, Romantic Portland environment mix!! The interior decor is to die for and a must see, everything from the Penny tables, Local artist paintings, and vintage lighting. The menu is a Lebanese infused American food. Hummus, gyro's, kabobs, tabouleh, burgers, falafel.....Its quite impressive!!! Drink menu is all local brew's plus some organic, including full bar. I met the owner on my 3-4th venture into the place. He's a really nice guy with alot of aspiration for the community and roots to Foster road. Staff is friendly too! The environment, staff, Super healthy food, and local brew's keep me coming back! From my understanding all meats are local farmed and organic; home cut and peeled french fries, as well as everything made fresh daily!!! I will be coming back! read more

Tried this awesome spot for the first time last night and was thoroughly impressed! Not only was there a great selection of drinks but the food selection put most pub menus to shame! Delicious pub fare with an awesome Mediterranean twist! We had garlic fries and the most amazing "nachos" (Greek style) ever! This is the absolute best bar in Portland food wise! I love ALL of their food! Steak kabobs with extra garlic aioli, hummus with pita break, potato hot pockets, mac and cheese triangles& literally everything on the menu. The staff is nice, especially the girl at the bar. Only complaint I have is one time I went there and the mac and cheese triangles were cold& pita bread tough. Despite that one time I have always had an amazing experience. read more

This place is fantastic and the happy hour is a screaming deal. Get the Kabob plate you will not be disappointed. Been in numerous times now and the staff (Marie, Bret and the other woman) have made each time a complete joy. The drinks are strong but made very well and the folks I've met there are a hoot. Me and my long term lunch buddy wound up at Bar Maven one morning after reading about their Gyro Burger. We went to Bar Maven on a recent weekend, what we found was a really cool bar with a great location and an even better bartender, for just after 10:00 am things were looking good. We sat at the bar and were immediately given a brunch menu, I hate brunch, things suddenly looked bad. Sheepishly, we asked the bartender if they had a lunch menu, "Sure she replied" our worries were for nothing. The menu was good, great really, and they would be happy to serve brunch or lunch. This is very important to us, lunch not brunch. We both generally do not like brunch menus and we never drink at that hour, so its important we find an earlier morning spot, for the weekend, without brunch menus-or prices. I think this may be the place we come for ALOT of early weekend lunches. I got a cheeseburger, my buddy got a hamburger and we split the fries. The cheeseburger was not the one they are known for and certainly not the Gyro Burger, but a smaller item, much cheaper, but crazy delicious. I think I have become to think of the burger, cheeseburger or bacon cheeseburger as a combination of tastes, not a sandwich where I pick ingredients apart. Its generally two buns with cheese, lettuce, meat, blah blah blah and nothing stands out. The difference with Bar Maven is that you could actually taste the meat, you could pick it out, it was delicious. It was strong, meaty, and tender-reminding me a lot of the way beef tastes in South America (except the tender part, mainly), really meaty! I could recognize their burger from a line of similar appearing burgers, my god it was great. The fries were good and as I mentioned the bartender was great. We will definitely be back. Great bar in SE Foster. Very good bar food with a middle east twist. Garlic parm very tasty along with the beef skewers. They tasted like I would make them at home. Great new neighborhood spot in Foster Powell. The bartender/ owner Bashar is very friendly and knowledgeable about his offerings, whether its his outstanding selection of beers (many organic or gluten free,) harder drinks, or the fantastic Lebanese-style menu (he's just switched to organic beef for all his burgers!) There's a small parking lot off Foster, so parking isn't nearly as problematic as some might think on busy Foster Rd. Come down and see them! read more

This place has some of the best falafel's that I have ever had. The falafel sliders during happy hour are amazing. They also have bacon wrapped dates that are sublime! The hummus was freshly made and I also enjoyed the fried cauliflower. Really good cocktails that are a dollar off during happy hour which is an insane deal for fresh juice cocktails. I believe the berry lemonade cocktail was 5 or 6 dollars on hh. This is my favorite bar in FoPo! The bar has a great atmosphere and there is a back patio where you are able to smoke hookah. The owner is really nice and although I was only in town visiting my sister for five days, we went to this bar three times due to the fact that every time we would go to a new bar/restaurant it just was not as good bar maven and so we would find ourselves ending our nights at bar maven. I am excited for my next visit to Portland because I know this will be the first place I would like to go eat and drink. read more
