One of my favorite things about my most recent visit to Portland was how close our Airbnb was to this great neighborhood restaurant. Walking in, the atmosphere and the friendly servers and bartenders made us feel welcome. Although their cocktail list had a lot of temptations, I went with a Negroni. Made with a local gin, it was perfectly balanced and helped me come down from a busy day of travel. My smash burger was *excellent*: it was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and I'm not kidding when I say that my stomach just growled while writing about it. Everyone at our table was happy with their choices, with high marks going to the Reuben. When I come back to Portland, I'll be staying at the same Airbnb because of course I'll want to come right back to this wonderful neighborhood restaurant and try more dishes. read more

This is inappropriate, and any unauthorized charge will not go through without a valid signature. If this was an attempt to retaliate because of the tip, that's unacceptable. I love the OG. Great bartenders, better than average bar food with often amazing specials. impressive whiskey selection, too, although I just drink beer. My only complaint is that they're into closing for private events whenever they can make a buck. Young, spunky corporate types sporting the company sportswear. Good on them, I guess, if it's worth more than the amount of money I spend in there over a normal week/month. I'll find a place that's a little more authentically into being a neighborhood bar. I guess I need to retract my former review as the bar eliminated their Vietnamese chicken salad (that was great non-typical bar food). Instead they suggested that their fried chicken salad with cheddar is practically the same so I should just order that. Cool. I can get fried chicken with tomatoes, "salad greens", cabbage and cheddar at any of the bars in the neighborhood. The only reason I'm really upset is because the Vietnamese salad was so good that I don't have much of a reason to come here anymore! None of their sandwiches come with house made fries or chips so you may as well go to the bar down the street if all you want is fried food. I like this place I'm just bummed they are going the wrong way with their menu. Give us some options for $14 - $18 without kettle chips! read more

We had a perfect first time experience there recently. There is no table service - so we sat at the bar to be served. Bartender was charming, attentive and helpful. We shared the ELK BURGER - moist, flavorful, delicious, unique. It came with SALT & PEPPER BEER-BATTERED FRENCH FRIES - crispy, salty nomnom. Hubby had the HAND-POPPED POPCORN and loved it. I had the SEASONAL SOUP = tasted like home. We also sampled our way down the cocktail menu and were not disappointed. Will be back! read more

My go to neighborhood bar. Incredibly warm staff and awesome place to watch a game. The menu is great and I LOVE their fries. Almost always go with the daily special and I've never had something I didn't wish they would add to the menu permanently. Went once and they had bland, limp fries. I wrote a review about it and in less than 10 minutes had a personal apology from the own explaining how their distributer ran out of their fries and this was a backup. Even offered to give me a refund! I didn't need another reason to love this place, but I found one. read more

Honestly one of my tried and true spots. Always consistently good food, service and can't beat the location. They have done SO much to make their space safe. Distanced, masks, tons of patio space, and even signs that tell you if a table is dirty or clean. The banh mi is on a perfect roll, it's spicy but not too bad and the chicken is well seasoned. I cannot resist fries here bc they're beer battered and so crispy! The popcorn is our go to. Even if just going for drinks you've gotta get a bowl for the table! Highly recommend this spot! One of favorite neighborhood bars to frequent. The atmosphere here as a comfort feeling to it. I'm surprised that I haven't written a review for them yet. They have a great selection of bourbon and whiskeys here. The food is pretty good and simple. One of my favorites - the beer battered fries covered with cheese. They also have a drink program, where you jeo track of all the spirits you drink (mainly whiskey, scotch, rye, bourbons) and one you fill up your card, you get your picture up on their wall. I'm always on the lookout for places to grab a bite to eat before a hockey game or a show, and last weekend we tried out The Old Gold. It was great! It's primarily a whiskey bar, but of course they have a full bar and will make anything you want. My husband tried the Morning Smoke drink, since he loves New Deal Coffee Liqueur. I think he liked it but would have probably preferred the Manhattan. Oh well, next time! I had the OG Mule, which was fine but not amazing. Foodwise, I ordered the Wedge Salad and OMG. It was enormous! And delicious too. I've never had dates on a wedge salad before, but it was a nice bit of sweetness, with the bacon I had to have them add. Can't have a wedge salad w/out bacon, right? It was pretty much a whole head of iceberg lettuce with blue cheese dressing. YUM. We also had the Mac & Cheese but felt it was missing something; it had little depth to the flavor. Would skip this one next time in favor of maybe the elk burger. You have to order at the bar - they won't come to the table to take your order. Bartenders were friendly, the place was pretty mellow but it was a late afternoon. Ample outside seating, but the few shade spots makes it unpleasant in anything over 90 degrees. Nice vibe inside, plenty of seating, and the Colin Farrell dead ringer bartender (who's name is Colin!) was cool. The "raspberry" wheat was excellent, I prefer it over McMenamin's Ruby. The food was good, a bit elevated from normal bar offerings, but not outstanding. The Buffalo-Style Cauliflower Sandwich sounds great in theory, but is difficult to execute. I craved more sauce, and it's tall size makes very difficult to eat even with knife and fork (cauliflower crumbles easily.) The choice of Fleur De Lis bun definitely makes it. The steak sandwich looked delicious and those who ordered it seemed to concur. However, I wish they used something other than boring cheddar. The Tofu Bahn Mi looked and tasted meh. When ordering beer-battered fries a la carte, you get a huge pile, but I just didn't connect with them. There were plenty left with our party of seven which says something. The BIG negative: you are required to go up to the bar for drink, food, re-order drink, cashout, everything. You'd think they'd maximize more revenue and tips with table service. I know this is a Portland trend (at least they give you utensils), but I'm not a fan. 3.5 stars. read more

I went to this bar from out of town to celebrate. It was a horrible experience. The bartender on Monday night was beyond rude not only to those in my group but to other patrons as well. The curry popcorn was so salty. While the ambiance was nice the customer service was horrible. We were standing right in front of the bartender in the almost empty establishment and it took her a solid 5 min to acknowledge us. Not even a simple I'll be right with you. Staff - on point. Quick to work with the rush of HH crowds and knowledgeable about what they sell. Drinks - Holy bajeezus. Go through the door and look to your right. You see that? It's a giant ass chalk board list of Whisky. Jackpot. Also, they have a drink menu full of great beers on tap and some straight up delicious cocktails for reasonable prices. Food - good deal all around. HH is the way to go for sure. My order: The "Angie" drink (Whisky, fresh ginger, ginger beer, and a lime) this was crisp and refreshing. Like an upscale whisky ginger it was great for the warm day. HH Grilled Cheese. Super delish. The bread was fantastic and of course grilled in tasty butter. Along with the stringy cheese was caramelized onion and fried sage. This just topped it off. I ate the whole thing in no time. It also came with some salt/pepper kettle type chips. For $5 I was sold. All in all this is a great spot. You can tell it's frequented by locals in the neighborhood and surrounding businesses. I would definitely come back if I found myself in the area. read more

The Old Gold is a local neighborhood bar that welcomes the entire neighborhood ... which it defines as ALL of Portland and Oregon. Hell, maybe even some neighbors from Washington can come, too. The prominent "Drink in Oregon" sign reminds everyone why the neighborhood is here. Oh, there's plenty of hip pub grub like Hand-popped Popcorn or an Old Gold Burger, but my recommendation is to order one of these three specialties: beer, cocktails, or whiskey. So my car wouldn't start and I stopped in here while I was calling for a tow truck at around 4:30pm. It was pretty busy so I asked this lady at the bar if the seat was open next to her and she says yes. As I was sitting down. I was calling a tow service. I wasn't loud, in fact I didn't even say more than a few words when the lady asked if I was going to be on my phone. I said yes and she said she didn't want me talking on the phone, She then starts talking to the person next to her and I say if I can't talk, then you can't talk. At which point I was asked to leave, which I didn't have a problem with. I then say to the bartender "so she can say I can't talk and so I'm not allowed to say the same thing?" and without even trying to sooth it out, she asks me to leave. By the way, I'm asian. So this is the thing... white people will back up white people unless a camera is rolling. Maybe the bartender was upset cause I dared to speak up against a fellow Caucasian. But this is the way you find racist people. If you're not white and you do the same thing as a white person and you have a consequence when the other person doesn't? That's racism. read more
