Never thought I'd say the best pepperoni pizza I've ever had was in Marfa, TX, but here we are! The homemade sauce was absolutely delicious, as was the cheese, pepperoni and crust. Everything was expertly cooked and perfectly portioned (i.e. they put on more cheese and sauce than most places). The service was really slow and our waiter seemed nervous and inexperienced (though friendly). There was hardly anything open in Marfa when we went, so this was one of our only choices, but I'm still glad we went and I feel you could definitely do worse! read more

While in Marfa we ate at this bar a total of 3 times. Happy hour twice and once for dinner. It's inside the modern Saint George hotel...I did some shopping at the book store located there as well. Truly dreadful service and the food was, unfortunately, close behind. Appetizer came out in decent time but was wrong and when we brought it to waiter's attention, we were told that it was the kitchen's fault and not his. Okay. Not sure what that had to do with getting out order fixed, but it set the tone. Our entrees then took almost 50 minutes and during this time he never said anything to us or even came by the table. We had to ask someone else to fill our water glasses. When our orders finally arrived they were once again incorrect and he decided he wasn't going to listen to us anymore as "it's on the kitchen, not me". All we wanted was the food order to actually be resolved. We weren't belligerent but the server was for some reason (maybe just a bad night for him). Unfortunately, the manager ended up coming over once he decided that he didn't want to help us anymore. They huddled and she came over and was almost as difficult to deal with. It's like they had no background in taking care of kitchen mistakes in a professional manner. We were frustrated by the evening overall but understand things happen. To have service and management behave in that manner was eye-opening and a first. Marfa is a small town but we expected more from the staff. And the food was simply not very good. The salad was "wet" but had almost no dressing, mostly water. The entrees were considerably overpriced for quality received. There are great spots in Marfa but I would avoid this one. read more

I've been disappointed with the pancakes in Austin lately, so super shocked that the best pancakes I've had in quite some time are in Marfa! Really, really excellent. Simultaneously fluffy and dense with a wonderful flavor. And HUGE. The bacon was slightly greasy, crispy and flavorful in all the best ways. Definitely my favorite brunch in quite some time! We didn't have any issues with the service, so perhaps the food and service are both hit or miss. But I wouldn't hesitate to send people here or to eat here again--tomorrow morning if we weren't leaving today! read more

A nice hotel bar with a great happy hour that won't break the bank (contrary to what some people who have never been to Marfa, it's not a cheap place!). We wandered into the hotel during happy hour and had a couple of drinks (we did not eat). My spicy margarita was delicious, and they had several regional and Texas beers on tap. The service was great, and it was interesting to see the hotel. It's definitely offering up a modern alternative to the beautiful but classic Hotel Paisano across the way! We had the truffle fries and steak nachos to start with and they were so great! I had the house cab and my friend had 3 margaritas that she just raced about. We sat in the first come area of the bar and it was cozy and comfortable. We were quickly greeted by our server Doug who's table-side manner was 10/10. I don't know if we hit them on a bad day, or what, but the service was super apathetic. We walked into the bar and a server told us to sit anywhere we liked. We knew we only wanted a drink and a nibble, so we sat at the bar instead of occupying a whole table. It took 10-15 minutes for anyone else to greet us and take our order, even though multiple bar staff walked past us (we tried to make eye contact, but no one seemed to look our way). When we finally did get to place our order, it took a while to make our drinks and get them to us. Then our bartender left again. He still hadn't returned by the time we finished our drinks and were ready to go, so we had to find another server and ask them to cash us out. The drinks themselves were fine, but not especially memorable. All this seems like it could be fixed with some basic customer service training. A little more effort and a sense of urgency would add a lot. read more

The best bar service I've ever had! My husband and I came here for a drink after we got married and our bartender (Ben) made our whole evening. He kept giving us free cocktails, tequila shots and even brought us a slice of the most delicious carrot cake (made fresh in house by the dessert chef). I've been here twice and I will review in detail generally and then separately for the food for the two visits: Drinks: amazing drinks. Try the brown derby bourbon sour, absolutely delicious! Service: very friendly servers, patient and sweet, and have great advice on what to see and eat in Marfa. Atmosphere: upscale and comfy in this small West Texas town, it's a treat for sure! Food: Day 1: we arrived in Marfa at 2:30pm and nothing was open, so we came here for lunch. We had the Niçoise salad, mine with salmon, I was so tired I didn't notice at the time but to add a piece of salmon is an extra $14 on top of $12 for Niçoise salad. I'm fine with it because it's probably rare for them to get fresh salmon in Marfa, but I just thought I'd put it here in came someone like me arrives after a 7 hour drive and forget to look at the price on the menu lol. The vegetables in the salad were great! Day 2: we came for happy hour and ordered the blistered shishito peppers and the bacon wrapped dates, both were delicious!!! Great little bar off the lobby of the St. George Hotel. We happily had a delicious breakfast here on Christmas morning. There was not much open in Marfa and we were happy to find anything. But this turned out to be much more than any port in a storm - the food was great! And it wasn't a $50/person brunch, just a nice a la carte menu. We sat at the bar (and saw t.v.s for the first time in days) and were waited on a busy but kind bartender. There were three people running the show and the place was busy. But they all were friendly and attentive. We had a basic breakfast plate (eggs, bacon, etc) and a breakfast calzone (eggs, sausage, goat cheese,). Both were fantastic! The coffee was also solid. We were impressed with this place and the other dinner dining experience we had at L'Aventure and hope to return to stay at the hotel. If there weren't so few places in Marfa the lack of service and inconsistency would destroy this place. Let's just get right into it. There is many more to complain about but I'll try to summarize. Ordered a salty dog straight from their limited cocktail menu on one day and it came out great with grapefruit juice, vodka, and topo chico in a glass with a salted rim. Then I come back the next day and order the same drink (salty dog) and get a bland grapefruit and vodka with no salted rim Don't come thirsty. Took 30 minutes for drinks and food arrived a minute later. Water cup was empty the whole time but no one seemed to care It's sad such a cool place refuses to teach staff how to provide adequate service. Maybe they should hire more? Idk what the problem is but it's not a big place. Lastly the check is always a nightmare to close out. Once the food comes you are completely forgotten about. No one asked how the food or drinks were. No one filled our empty water glasses. Had to wait 15 minutes after finishing food to even get the ch Anyway the food is decent but the inconsistencies and lack of service continue to bring down my review. This place has a lot of potential, however the reviews about the service are true.. service is very lacking. (Side note: I worked in the service industry for about 3 years, I try to be as understanding as possible). My boyfriend and I came to Marfa for a mini vacation. We ate at Bar Saint George our first night, a Wednesday at about six. Bartender was friendly and helpful, but very busy. We ordered a glass of wine and margarita from the happy hour menu, along with Parmesan fries, all of which were great. However, as the evening progressed more customers came in, tables were full and needed to be cleaned, and maybe three people including the bartender were working. We decided to grab the check and leave to open up some space at the bar; had dinner elsewhere. We chose to come back the following night for dinner around eight as very few places were open at the time. Bartender from the previous night was working, remembered us, we said our hellos, but again he was understandably busy and had others to tend to before we could order drinks. There were 4 tables uncleared, all other tables were occupied, and I noticed four staff including the bartender working this area. After about 25 minutes we were able to grab one of the cleared off tables. Once at the table, we waited about 15 minutes before a waiter came to help us, who was also friendly. Initially, I had to go back to the bar for a menu. We never received silverware or napkins at the table. The wait staff seemed friendly, but busy and hard working. Other tables appeared to have a similar experience of waiting some time before receiving service. Overall, the food was delicious, which is the main reason for three stars. Bar Saint George has a lot of potential, but service is crucial and that's what seems to be lacking here. If the service improves, I'll look forward to coming back! read more

3:30pm in a Tuesday in winter - this is the only place open to eat. So here we are. Pleasantly surprised! Had happy hour drinks, the brown derby was well balanced and not too sweet or sour. I'm a whiskey and scotch man but the smoky flavors of this drink were incredible. They also have the best pizza we have ever had in our life, an elote pizza. Sounds odd, but the flavor is phenomenal from the Mexican cheese to the corn and tajin sprinkles. So good we came Back again while on our trip. We've eaten here several times, and have always had decent service and food. The wings have always been good, we prefer the Thai, and they still are. I've usually order the hamburger, but this time the burger was over cooked and not the quality of beef that I've enjoyed in the past. This place has been the most disappointing of all the places I've dined here in Marfa. First, when we entered we asked about a dinner menu. We were told that dinner service didn't begin but if we wanted to be seated now we could eat at the bar. We were a WHOLE 20 minutes early and they were quite empty. No accommodation was suggested and since the birthday girl in our party wanted to eat there we went with it even though we did state we preferred the dinner menu. The hostess just shrugged their shoulders and this was all they could do. Things just went downhill from there. We ordered drinks and waited over 15 minutes for them. Then we ordered our food and waited 35-40 min. There was only our party and 4 other people in this place seated. Meanwhile, their staff goofed off over by the bar, the bartenders chatted, played and wasted time and our server seemed to be running back and forth folding silverware into napkins at the end of the bar the whole time. We never were checked on or offered drink refills. When our food finally arrived it was subpar at best. They only have a few entrees available and couldn't even get those right. Not one single person in our party finished their meal and by that point we had all wished we'd gone elsewhere for dinner. The server never once came back to ask how our meal was, refill one single drink... just nothing. I guess she already knew what the food tasted like. I suppose what really irritates me the most is the fact that When we paid our check we asked where was the manager on duty. Well, she was there the whole time perched in a chair on her laptop. At that point I realized that this was common place for this establishment so I paid my bill and left. If you are out to dinner in this location do yourself a favor and just go to Paisano's. read more

Since moving to (east) TX, I try to get out to west TX at least once every winter, so I've either stayed at or had a meal at the Hotel St. George several times over the past few years. Highly recommend the happy hour ($5 margaritas that aren't weak, plus some other happy hour specials on wine and select cocktails/beer). The food menu is not that extensive, but there's some decent options - and since restaurants in Marfa tend to be very selective about their openeing hours and are often only open on weekends, the fact this hotel restaurant is actually open every day and night of the week is a big plus. read more

I hate, HATE, giving negative reviews, especially for a restaurant in such a quaint small town, but our experience was extremely poor. We dined in the restaurant with a reservation on a Saturday night at 8pm. I automatically give sympathy to our server, because she was also tending to a large private party in the back room; and I know how pressing that can be working in the service industry in the past. The restaurant website listed a couple of items we were excited to order, none of which were available. When ordering, we were informed the online menu was outdated. Ok, no biggie, we are flexible. We ordered the baked Brie to start...out of stock. Market fish, also not available. Ok, they are in an isolated area, understandable. We substituted the baked Brie for the cheese board, which was pretty good, not spectacular, but decent. Next course was supposed to be a Caesar salad. Cheese board finished and bussed....waiting...5min, 10min, 15min, then the food runner finally arrived with the main courses, braised short rib (him $30) and ribeye (me $60) with side herb potatoes ($8). I must add that the web menu includes sides with entrees but not the new menu presented currently. Not a big deal, we are here for a nice dinner, we are willing to pay extra for great food. Entree outcome: Husband's braised rib was very cold but "cooked" as in no pink. The meat was obviously precooked and not reheated appropriately, then slathered in a rather bland sauce (which could be a health violation considering it was pork). Ribeye was good, kinda fatty but cooked medium rare as ordered. When inquiring on the Caesar salad, the server stated that the kitchen was "out of Caesar". Geez, really? Could have informed us about 20min ago. But, we didn't complain, just nicely requested to sub for some Brussels, which, were actually amazing and the highlight of the meal. Since we had plenty of time waiting in between courses, we entertained ourselves by observing the environment. It was obvious our server was doing the best she could. However, there was this guy walking around in faded blue jeans and a sloppily tucked in collared shirt which we could only assume was the manager. Not once in his lazy rounds throughout the floor did he ever check in on the quality of food or service. In conclusion, I think this restaurant has potential, but, between the grossly inaccurate online menu, the numerous current menu items not available, and the poor meat preparation, it's obvious this place is poorly managed. Hopefully, we caught them on a bad night. However, needless to say, we will be spending our $140 elsewhere next time visiting the west Texas frontier. 2 stars over 1 provided for the tireless effort from our poor, overstretched server and the tasty Brussels. read more

The next morning we ordered the same items and, because they had received their delivery, gorgeous salads. It gets better... they started bringing out our food and one of our three items just never showed up. We finally asked about it and they apologized that it had never been put in. By this point we had finished our food and simply cancelled the item... otherwise we'd be at the restaurant all day. Later in the day, we ended up at Bar Saint George for afternoon drinks and snacks. The server charged us $7 for a single bottle of Topo Chico. After contesting it, we had to wait another fifteen minutes for her to bring us the corrected check. Prices were steep and the food quality and service didn't add up to a good value for the $. On the first visit I asked for a G&T made with St George Botanivore (of the St George Distillery of Alameda CA, not a house hotel brand). I pointed it out on the menu. I saw Botanivore in stock on the bar shelf. What I got was a house G&T, far too watered down, no lime. Difference in price? $7. I asked the server to fix it but she corrected me by saying "I brought you the House Gin and Tonic." Sigh. OK. On the second visit I didn't get a drink but my companion did. We both ordered off the bar entree menu. I ordered a medium well burger. What I got was a burger with a raw and cool center. It tasted great and I did not send it back because we were in a hurry to get away from the ear gratingly loud music. Different server this time. She did offer to fix it - no complaints about the service on that visit, just the kitchen. This undercooked food phenomenon is a general kitchen problem. We also got raw entrees when we dined another night in the more expensive restaurant on the other side of the bar. read more
