I recently pulled out carpet from a bedroom to reveal some very old and worn out hardwood. I have large patches that needed to be filled and the rest needed to be refinished. Rich and his team did a fine job, refurbishing the hardwood floor in the front (375 sq') room of our 1920's small bungalow. The floor was showing the decades of scuffs, cracks, scratches, etc... Last summer Rich installed and refinished hardwood floors in part of my house. He is efficient, reliable, and above all, a perfectionist who takes pride in his workmanship. Rich was great and our refinished floor look absolutely beautiful, much better than anything I could buy nowadays. It just seems to glow with an inner light and has a lot of character. And it's even easy to care for. If you're trying to decide whether to get rid of your nasty carpet and refinish the hardwood floors that are under the carpet in so many 1950's/60's ranch houses in Silicon Valley, I'd strongly encourage you to go for it. The results are so elegant, and much healthier, cleaner, and more environmentally sound than carpet. The expense is in the same ballpark as re-carpeting (if you have hardwood already underneath your carpet.) It costs about $2.50 to $4 a square foot. Even if you have to have the hardwood installed, it will cost you less than carpet over the time you have your home, and give you so much enjoyment and add value to your home when the time comes to sell. You can get just about any color or level of gloss you want. Rich sanded a number of times, filled the wood carefully, and put on 4 coats of water-based coating. He takes pride in doing a good job. He's been doing this work for quite a while and learned his trade back in the day when the apprenticeship/journeyman process was really comprehensive training. He put a commercial quality finish on our floor so it would hold up well, but it was also healthy, ecologically sound, and non-smelly so we could move right back in. He did some minor repairs without adding anything to the estimate. He's easy to talk to and glad to explain what he's doing and why. He's worked with his assistant for a long time and his assistant also seems to be completely trustworthy. Ours was a big job because of some nasty carpet glue that the previous owners had used, but he honored his original estimate even when it ended up taking longer than he'd planned for. He was also willing to be flexible in scheduling us in, and was always there when he said he would be. I wish I could have taken away only a small fraction of a star, but Yelp made me either take away a whole star or no star at all, and I thought I had to take away a tiny bit-- I'm really picky and I didn't like that there were some nails showing where he did the repairs (which might be unavoidable), and it looks like his machine scuffed my nice new wall paint in a couple places, and the new oak baseboard he installed is a tad wider than what he took out. Also, though he was very careful to clean up the jobsite each day before he went home, but things still got dusty. Some other floor refinishers in the area, like Rodriguez Brothers, have a sander with a dust-containment system. Still, I have to say that this guy is one of the better-kept secrets in the contracting world. read more
