Really sad. Attempted to call first this morning. Rang once, only to get the call terminated. I waited until 11AM to call back. Phone rang four times... a man picked up. I asked, "Hey! Do you have any time for an oil change today?" He replied, "Noooo way" and just hung up. I was even trying to see if I could schedule something tomorrow, but that is how fast he was eager to end the call. Wow. Talk about lack of phone skills or basic customer service. At least offer alternative times or see if I'd be willing to come back at a later date. I just moved into the new condos in the area and was looking for a regular mechanic for my two vehicles. So yet again Barbary Coast Garage saves the day!!! I depended on my son in laws mechanic at an actual Garage twice and twice he did not fix the problem on top of that he said it was a wiring issue (he doesn't do that), which turned out to be wrong! Then I trusted an old friend to take care of it and haven't heard from him in a week! My neighbor was helpful, but his mechanic well let's just say he doesn't work out of a garage. I couldn't take the chance. So after a couple of months of disappointment and my car out of service, I did what I should of done in the 1st place....I called Don at Barbary Coast Garage. I had my car towed to them around 9:45a this morning, by 10a Don was calling with the 1st update and at 1:30p it was time to pickup my car...wow! It needed a new alternator and battery and a couple of other tweaks they found because they do a very thorough diagnostic for you. Fantastic and Friendly service. I highly recommend. read more

I have been going to this mechanic for about a year and in that time not only have I completely disregarded even the thought of every going to another mechanic but I have converted many, many friends and family as well! I have been to this shop for things as simple as an oil change and tuneups all the way to replacing an engine and transmission! Many of my friends and family has also got their brakes done, belts changed and diagnostic tests. Every single time I have went there I have had an honest, professional, timely and affordable experience. They have always been the most affordable option but honestly even if they weren't, I would still go to them because you cannot beat a mechanic you can trust. Bottom line is that this is one of those old-school mechanic shops that you really just don't find anymore. They are just wholesome, old-school and fair. I called this garage at the last minute to have my rotors changed on my Lexus IS250 and they quickly ordered the part. I was there only an hour later and they already had the part and a spot for me in the garage; they had me pull the car right in. They immediately got to work and they had the job done faster than I was expecting, took a test drive, and I was out of there. Everyone was very friendly and respectful. Great overall experience. I'll never pay for any services from the Barbary Coast Again. I tried calling them to explain my grievance directly but the owner wasn't available...which is funny because owner availability is why I chose them in the first place. I figure an owner that answers the phone has a good grip on his shop... they ended up charging me %15 higher for a job Im not even sure was necessary. He said he would call me and let me know the problem. I called 4+ hours after dropping off and he didn't even know what was going on with my car. Then called back instantly and said it was finished. After paying I noticed grease stains on my tan leather seats. Yikes! But the last straw was that I found a shop towel in the bowels of my ride. Too funny!because when I originally went in to drop off my car the owner and his wife were grumbling about the bill for getting their shop towels cleaned by a textile service and the textile service's technician was explaining they were missing towels. :). Still looking for a good reasonable honest mechanic in SF's HP area. read more

These guys are great. A true old school shop with skilled mechanics. They diagnose and fix problems instead of just replacing a bunch of parts. Super friendly and their rate is a screaming deal at $45/hr. They seem to work on most cars and trucks and it looks like they work on those amphibious tour vehicles as well. This is a team of great mechanics. My wife and I have been taking our cars to them since October, 2008. Her car is a 2006 VW Jetta Wagon TDI, the diesel. Mine is a 1999 Porsche Boxster. We started going to them on the recommendation of a friend who had already been taking his BMW 3 series there for oil changes. We started off with oil changes and then just went from there. For the Jetta Wagon they have done oil changes and also the scheduled maintenance. The Jetta Wagon hasn't needed much beyond that yet, but my eleven year old Boxster has been battered by SF streets, an 80-mile round trip commute, and age - wait is this about me or the car? Anyway, things break and wear out. Their rates are great and they know how to fix just about anything I throw their way - just think "older car" and you can imagine. I'm on the road again! read more

A *great* garage! VERY reasonable prices These guys evaluated my car, determined what I needed, and they were 1/2 (half!) the price of the two other quotes I received. Plus, they're nice guys and they explain things. Plus, they're right off the freeway in SF. The trip from Redwood City to Barbary Coast Garage was 25-30 minutes. A little bit of a haul, but I saved $400 dollars over closer, less-competent shops. I would definitely use this shop again and I highly recommend them. read more

I'm in a business complex a block away so I first came to them because of convenience but if I moved to the other side of town I would still come to them. Most mechanics will charge $100 to $150 an hour labor. These guys charge $65. and they do a great job. They are fast, efficient and perhaps most importantly they are honest.
