Beware if you care about your car. Here's what I found on an oil change today. My mechanic told me that whoever did the oil change before had applied silicon to the bolt threading, and it was unnecessary because the bolt threads were brand new, and the only reason they would do it is to prevent a return trip due to an oil leak. The thing is: a competent mechanic would have used a one time use crushable washer, not a silicon adhesive. My mechanic told me, "Whoever did this is a driveway mechanic who doesn't know what he's doing." So who cares? The silicon degrades and ends up in your engine. So yeah, you should care. And who, might you ask, had done my previous oil change so incompetently? Palace Auto. I have pics of the silicon, washer, bolt. The silicon washing off the threads was great to see. I can just imagine pieces of that gunking up my BRAND NEW FUKKING ENGINE. read more

My wife hits a curb at nighttime, and the tire popped. I put on the spare tire. The next morning, I dropped off the wheel to his auto shop to change a tire. He called me and told me the wheel was ready. I returned for them to put on the wheel. It was Pirelli tires, and he needed to order one. This auto shop is reliable and trustworthy. It cost $209.11 included tax and labor for one Pirelli tire. The tire needed to be replaced immediately. Otherwise, I would purchase the Pirelli tire for a very low price on Amazon. And take the tire to his car shop so they can replace it for a lot less than $209.11. read more

Needed to update this to emphasize how good Oai is as a local mechanic. This is the place to go. Oil change, check engine light, all your lights on at the same time. Oai's shop is honest, they charge fair prices. All the brake lights went off on my old Prius so I brought it in. I was prepared for an expensive bill, but I needed brake fluid. Oai sent me on my way no charge. Every oil change is the same price, he does not over-charge. As a woman, wow this is a breathe of fresh air. If anything is wrong with your car, come here. He uses street parking to accommodate each customer, so do not come Wednesdays! He doesn't really take appointments so just show up, and be prepared. Pictured are the faulty parts they replaced (as they always inform you what's going on with the car). And as trusted, during this visit without asking, I was notified that my clutch was going to need replacement soon. He explained it was the reason why my car was not accelerating well. I was kinda worried it'd all cost a fortune cuz I know clutch costs a lot to replace but I knew Oai is fair and to my relief the pricing/experience was consistent. My car always drive out of here better than when it goes in. While waiting for my car I was having a good conversation/joking with Oai and fellow customers and that's when I learned that Oai's been in business for over 20 years. When you come, they're busy but also always manage to service you as fast as possible and have good communication along the way (compared to my previous auto experiences); the proof is in the pudding. We even took a picture to remember the moment lol but I'm not posting it to consider the privacy of the other customers. Oai "Y" is 100% a thief or he's getting up in age where he forgets things!! I bought a little commuter car and noticed it was due for an oil change. I noticed that the last oil change was done at Palace Auto services so I decided to take my car there. Y sees that car and tells me he's worked on the car in the past and that it was a really good car. I get an oil change from Oai and within two weeks my check engine light comes on. I end up taking the car to the nearest mechanic and I was told that the car had no engine oil. I go back to Oai and he tries to tell me that the car is burning oil. There was no possible way that my car burned 4 1/2 quarts of oil in such small amount of miles with no oil leaks. I called him out on being a thief and he said he would put oil in it for free. Then I thought... why are you offering to give me free oil if the car is burning the oil according to you? I ended getting my oil and filter changed by another shop. I drove the car for over 3k miles and guess what? My oil is perfectly fine. So here I am letting you all know that either Oai is a thief or Oai is just getting up in age and totally forgot to put oil. read more

I've taken two of my cars here (2012 Mazda 3 & 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan). My car needed some work on rusted out/broken parts from the suspension and the minivan needed some engine work because of some ticking sound the dealer told me was related to some broken lifters and cam. I can go offfff on what the dealer was going to charge me for the work on my van, but I don't want to waste my energy on that. Rather, I want to shower big praise on the guys at Palace Auto, particularly the main dude, Oai (pronounced like the letter "y"). It's been 5 months since the car and a month since the minivan. I recommend these guys for their work quality, and most importantly to their fairness. If you take your car in for service they let you know what is needed and, if you're on the fence, how long you can push the service back. Or better yet, if you can put some car work off in order to combine with a future service. My cousin originally told me about this place and since then I've taken my cars here. I have not experienced or sensed tacking on extras. And, I have not felt pressured to do some work unless it's absolutely necessary. If you're busy or want to drop off your car after hours, they either open later if possible, or have an alternate method of getting your key from you. Having recently moved to San Francisco, and received numerous warnings about the exorbitant prices for services, I was truly bummed when the check engine soon light came on in my car, then started dribbling coolant on Friday night!!! Yipes! I quickly scanned Yelp and found a few promising candidates in my vicinity. However the first option did not open on the weekends. Given my full agenda this weekend, I really wanted service the next day, so I was beyond thrilled when I saw that this place opens on Saturday! So, I limped my car to the shop through the neighborhood backroads and arrived just before 8am without an appointment. I spotted Oai (pronounced "Y") immediately and told him my predicament. He comprehended it on the first pass--need oil change, check engine light on, spewing coolant. He said that it is possible that the check engine light and the coolant leak were related. I also told him that I needed a ride back. He let out a low whistle as he apologized that he was slammed that morning. 40 minutes later, after expertly re-arranging cars around his shop utilizing street parking like car jocks, he sent an employee to give me a ride back on the other side of McLaren Park. I had offered to catch a Uber ride back home to his busy technicians working on the cars, but he had insisted that he was almost caught up! Later that early afternoon, I got a call from Oai who explained that he had diagnosed the check engine light was vapor lock often caused by a loose gas cap (annoying), and he found that two radiator hoses had rotted and come loose--phew! He then said he reset the check engine light and will not charge me for the diagnosis, and to bring the car back if it came back on. He also said he would try his utmost to get me back into my car before he closed that evening! NICE! So, at closing time, and a couple of hundred bucks later, my car was up and running with oil changed. The final bill was really close to the estimate, and I absolutely appreciate the crew going the extra mile to fix the car past the normal closing time on a Saturday afternoon. Oai even chose to wait a bit longer after closing to help me take receipt of the car after plowing through heavy traffic! He still made time after I arrived to show me the expired hoses he had extricated from my car. For under-promising and over-delivering, expedited service without an appointment, work done to estimate, waiving the check engine light diagnostic fee, and sincere desire to deliver exemplary service, 5 SOLID STARS. read more
