BARBATELLA: "SPIRITED" BUT SENILE? RATING: GO (BUT TREAD CAREFULLY) We were in for the $29 three course dinner tonight. This was our second time. We like the place, we love the deal. So...what was wrong? Our first visit, green dining room. Lovely woman, very good service. Second visit, the other room (with the pizza oven and gelato station). Our server was...let's just say he was in a VERY confused state. -Came to the table with a water pitcher. "Oh, we'd like bottled water, please." Okay. -Took our drink order. -Circled back a few minutes later and took our food order. Interrupted me as I was giving it to say, "I'll take the dessert order later." Okay, no worries. -No drinks. -No drinks. -Bread basket ordered. -Bread basket arrives. -Apps arrive. -Server comes back to confirm food order (maybe don't interrupt me and you'll "hear" it). -No drinks. -I inquire about drinks. "You ordered drinks?" Yes, we did. "Sorry, lots of tables and I'm the bartender, too." Really?! Okay, you know what, just bring the wine. -Server knickname given - Excuses -Brings wine. -App plates cleared. -Entrees arrive. -Server comes by to check on things. Great. -Server comes by, starts "refilling" our glasses with tap water (with the bottled water still on the table. Whoa! -Entree plates cleared. -Server takes Dessert order. -Desserts arrive. -Server arrives in the middle of dessert to ask if we'd like dessert. Whoa!!! Look, we're there for the deal, but we're diners and we're not jerks. We like to order and enjoy a cocktail, bread basket, contorni, add a few bucks to the tab. We generally tip well. The Server did himself a disservice by not offering any add-ons, and providing opportunities to increase the check (bottled water, sides, etc.). We tipped fairly despite the multiple snafus. Barbatella is a very nice restaurant with delicious food and a wood burning oven (a personal weakness) offering a VERY good deal right now. This restaurant is one of our favorites . We love their Margarita pizza . We always sit at the bar due to its much quieter and quainter . The bartender Natalia is wonderful with a great personality and attitude. She had a full bar as well as taking care of the servers drinks. She never missed a beat. When a male bartender eventually joined her , he was not even close to the welcoming personality as Natalia . He seemed to be simply in the way . We have had other food there , which was also delicious. Yet we usually stay with our Margarita pizza . I would recommend this restaurant and I have several times to family and friends. read more

Friends wanted Italian food after Naples Players excellent show, Les Miz, so we chose to try the summer three course menu for $29, with a bottle of wine added if two people ordered the menu. Great first course choices - Caesar salad , fried mozzarella or prosciutto over pea purée. All were tasty. Second course pasta was excellent, salmon cooked well but the Olive/caper topping was overwheming and salty, pork scallopini Parmesan was just ok. Everyone was jealous of my tiramisu for dessert, while they had lemon sorbet and chocolate ice cream. Our white wine was tasty, another surprise, but I don't care for Merlot, which our friends had. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. He didn't rush us but checked often for our needs. Courses were served with time in between to relax. A good meal, but I have to say, I want to return and try their wood fired oven pizzas. read more

Had a most pleasant dinner here. The location is very nice. A very nice restaurant just behind this - market - was closed and we originally wanted to go there. Again, the food was good but just expensive. We did not make it for happy hours, so it was just expensive. I have the pizza which was good, we also had two other dished and some wine. The wine was over priced and just ok- overall if the price was 30% less, wine 40% less, it would be a good place. Seems the restaurateurs in Naples are trying pay for their multi-million dollar houses by over charging. read more

Not worthy of a visit. At a table of 6, we would rate 5 of the meals as average, and one as unacceptable. The half lobster on the $52 seafood platter was inedible due to overcooking. It also had one unopened mussel, and a rotten clam. This platter should never have made it out of the kitchen. However, the worst part was the manager's response to our complaint. Although the meal was comped, the manager's response to the complaint was to say that no one has ever complained about the seafood platter. Some positives; the cocktails and the appetizers were good. But this restaurant is not worthy of it's location in downtown Naples. read more

What's better than 100 layer lasagna this special that they have on occasion is a must have. it is so light and flavorful perfectly crafted. We enjoyed last night with several friends that have not experienced it and we all agreed it was the best lasagna experience at a restaurant. Great setting outside perfect service from our waitress. A hidden gem! We missed the happy hour, but were so glad we came. The exterior is beautiful with lots of outdoor seating and a fountain. The interior is just gorgeous with green walls and beautiful light fixtures and a large bar. We ordered wine and the chef's 3 course prefixe menu. The service was nothing to write home about, but it was not bad. The eggplant Parmesan and meatballs were both excellent starters. The swordfish had out of this world flavors with the whipped buratta potatoes and pine nuts. It was the best swordfish I've ever had! My husband enjoyed the pasta primavera. The sundae for dessert really blew me away, so many wonderful flavors and a huge portion size. The doughnuts were a miss. This restaurant is gorgeous. Lovely outdoor patio, stellar service by Vanessa as well as our busser. Food was amazing, my salmon was cooked to perfection. Best Ceasar salad I have ever eaten. The other great thing was that they were willing to alter the entree and salad to accommodate my picky husband. Negatives , it's crazy loud inside . As the restaurant got busier, the noise escalated. Acoustics inside are not great so carrying on a conversation is a big no. Then there was the line to the bathroom that stood by our table which made me believe there was one stall in the men's room. We went to Naples yesterday and had lunch and dinner, and dinner was at this establishment. The outside patio ambiance was beautiful. The inside restaurant was nice and interesting but a little small. Our waiter was a great guy, smile, welcoming, friendly, and attentive. The food came out fast without any kind of delays. The wine we had was fantastic. Now the Italian food . We had lasagna, eggplant appetizer, and pasta alla Norma. If I was a guessing man, there is not an Italian chef in that kitchen. If you all don't mind I would like to keep this food portion simple for this review because the only negative is the food and maybe some people care more about service and ambiance and might not be as picky with the authenticity of Italian dishes. So back to the dishes themselves simply the sauce was chunks of tomato not cooked and everything needed salt and more love, let's just stop there. Over all I'm giving this place a 3 because the pizza in their online photo looked nothing like and tastes nothing like a traditional Neopolitan pizza, which is what I googled and expected. The main reason we went there was because our favorite pizza place, La Trattoria was closed. The restaurant interior is adorable, with a huge bar and outdoor dining. We were the only ones there inside, except there were two families outside when we first artived. Lastly, the service was good and the waitress was very polite. If they want to know how Neopolitan pizza is done, they need to get training from the staff at La Trattoria. read more

The women with an accent answered phone and was very curt with my sister. Informed her that there was an event and there was no outside seating. Our waiter Michael was pleasant enough but when I informed him that the lasagna had ricotta cheese in it not the bechemel that it specifically states in the menu and which I may add they say is one of their specialties he couldn't have cared less. Not only did he not apologize he actually tried to argue about it. I have traveled and eaten all over the world and have never been spoken to with such irrelevance. The artichoke Caesar salad was small, dry and not many artichoke hearts. when we asked for bread it came with no butter or oil. There was no ambiance we were at a high top table in the middle of the bar. It was loud , uncomfortable and very over priced for less than average food. This deserves no more than 3 stars for a few very specific reasons. Although the chicken parm and the eggplant app (tiny but tasty) was very good, the menu for the lasagna clearly lists "bechamel" but it's just cheap ricotta instead. It was an obvious difference, the reason 2 in our party ordered it, and when we asked the waiter he admitted it, brushed it off and said that's just what most places do. Inside is also very small and loud. I would have given 4 stars since most was very good, but this lasagna issue was ridiculous and unfortunately, typical these days. read more

Oviously they are cheapening their dishes to accommodate whatever financial constraints they are having. We used to go to Barbatella frequently. it's not our first disappointing meal this season. Making our way to the downtown area we stopped and put our name in for a table. 30 min wait was easy, gave us a chance to walk around. This was our third time at Barbatella's and it's has always been wonderful. Seating either inside or outside will give you good views. The service has always been great and quick. Our party of six ordered pizza, salmon and pasta dishes. Great tasting! This night there was live music and it made the dining even better. By the way, the Peroni beer is very cold from the tap. It's been awhile since I had a meal here. Every once in awhile I'll go to the bar during happy hour and I think I will stick to that. This place is way overpriced for just average food. I had the Linguine Vongole which is basically linguine with clams, cherry tomatoes and basil. Nothing special and not too flavorful. Some of the friends with me ordered pizza, which looked good but I didn't try any. So a small pasta dish and a glass of wine was $60 which included a small tip. I say small because with such inflated food prices (not just here but everywhere in Naples) servers automatically get more in tips, but now 20% is considered minimum. I don't agree. Plus now tips are not being taxed. I think we have to rethink our tipping culture here in the U.S. Sorry, this is not Barbatella's fault so I'll stick to the rating here. Average. However the ambiance is nice being in downtown Naples (thus the nosebleed prices for average food). read more

We recently had dinner at Barbatella and were very disappointed. We have always dined there in the past and was one of our favorite restaurants. We absolute love the bar area and the outdoor patio seating. We requested outdoor seating with our reservation but upon arrival we were told there were no tables available. We were seated indoors which was not to our liking. Unfortunately this was not the case this time. First off and totally unacceptable was the fact that our server suggested a Cabernet wine which was $30 a glass which we only realized when we got our check. I asked about the buy one get one pizza night for Mondays that I had gotten the week before and he snipped and said oh it's in season we don't do that anymore only in the summer time. I want to start by saying this is the first review I have ever written. I have traveled the wold and have never delt with such rude management in my life. From the start the man and woman that greeted us at the hostess stand were absolutely awful. They treated us like we weren't paying patrons and couldn't care less about our business. If our children weren't starving I would have left. After dealing with the awful treatment the food was completely Inedible. The kids Mac n cheese was bland. I'll start this review with the positives. This place has decent seating including a nice outdoor area. The staff is very friendly and attentive. As far as the food, we ordered a Caprese salad and Pasta & Fagioli Soup followed by a margarita pizza and one glass of wine. The food was good but not worth the price we paid. Our bill was $76 without the tip. Food not worth the price. Parking is available in the street for free or a near by parking lot.
