If you're near here, you can choose between Barbecue Kai or L&L (across the street). I personally have only tried L&L on the mainland so not sure how it compares to the ones here. Barbecue Kai's portions were massive. Like 2-3x more than you really need to eat. I got the Seafood Platter which had fish, fried shrimp, and fried scallops. The fish had a little too much salt and the last two items had too much batter. I tried some of my husband's meat plate and the teriyaki chicken was really good and tender (dark meat!). The kalbi wasn't so bad either. There aren't too many places to eat at in this area so if you have a good appetite, this is a great option. read more

I would advise if you near here go if you have the patience because the service was terrible. While staying in Waianae, we ate at Barbecue Kai, because we saw all the locals gathered there daily. We love local food joints, and this one did not disappoint. The lady that took our order was sweet and helped us order, we got the meat combo that had chicken, pork, beef and fried shrimp (or garlic shrimp, depending on your choice) with rice and mac salad. Living on the west side leaves our dining options fairly limited, but Barbeque Kai offers a great selection of local cuisine at a price that's very reasonable. From the looks of it you would probably go to L&L across the street. But this dive is an institution for the Waianae Locals. Don't let the short lines fool you, service is fast, about 3 times faster than L&L. I don't consider every item to be good. But what is, is given away by the name. Teriyaki Steak or BBQ chicken sandwiches are pretty hefty for $2.25 and the deluxe is 50 cents more. The BBQ plate lunch, especially the Kalbi is also my favorite. The teriyaki sauce is local style sweet but they put enough Ginger to balance it out. With the other items you are taking you chances, just personally don't care for the way they are seasoned. The four stars are for value, speed and the BBQ items. Pack it up and take it to the beach to chow down, you will see why. read more

It's across the street from an L&L and you'd probably drive right by it because there isn't a lot of signage. For some reason, I've only gotten the burgers there. Good Hamburger Steak Plate (Use real ground beef). My g-freind didn't get her fries in our package and we paid for them. Filthy, smelly garbage cans by the side of the restaurant (watch out for the Health Dept.) Very big turn off! Experiences here are usually good but my last few visits haven't been too great and today it was horrible. Kalbi was so chewy and tough. Mac salad was just gross. After one bite it was spit out and I lost my appetite. Seafood combo, mahi mahi was soggy, fried shrimp was rock hard and they put bbq chicken when I ordered it with Teri beef. My kids enjoyed the garlic shrimp but I asked for it to be peeled TWICE when I made the order and it was not. Chicken Katsu tasted like straight grease. This place deserves a better rating than three and a half stars, but not quite five. 4 is about right. The food is good enough and the price is cheap. The mix barbecue is like $6.50 for kalbi, chicken, and teri beef. The kalbi has that chinese beef squidlike softness, but the ginger taste is good. The loco moco is huge for $6.50ish with plenty of gravy. The beach is a short walking distance if you want to eat by the ocean. I don't know if they have a substitute for the mac salad. I wish they did. The dishes are caloric enough without the starch and mayonnaise. read more

I drove past this place more times than I can remember and one day finally decided to stop when we had some time to kill and looking for a place to eat in Waianae. I ordered the Mahi plate and was surprised by the amount of Mahi I got. Probably one of the best Mahi plate lunch I've had. It was lightly floured so the coating wasn't really thick which I liked. I don't like a really thick batter on my fish cause all you taste is batter. This review is for the Mahi plate because that's the only thing I've had. I came here a lot as a kid but slowly stopped . This used to be a spot my family would eat breakfast lunch and dinner at . However , the food slowly started to get worst . Customer service definitely got worse. They don't take accountability for their mistakes , we always asked for all rice in our hamburger steak because my bf doesn't like it ... they gave us Mac salad . I asked for all rice again and she rolled her eyes , gave me a dumb look & gave me attitude like we didn't ask for it . Even More so I don't wanna come back .. so unnecessary.
