In total agreement with other fellow Yelpers - this place is an awesome choice for Korean BBQ down on the West Side. We needed to grab some food before heading to the beach and this lovely place popped up, so we decided to give it a try. Menu has a great selection and prices are affordable! I got the Spicy BBQ Chicken (mini) and my designated driver got the Mini Combo. My Spicy BBQ Chicken was very well-sauced and not too spicy. The sauce was great, but make sure you're not wearing anything light-colored (it will stain). The sides of seaweed and kimchi were great as well. It was definitely more "local" style kimchi, but nonetheless, delicious. The Mini Combo was very well-portioned and had a great variety of protein. Every piece was delicious and not too salty. The banchan was also very complimentary and tasty. Again, prices were great and very justified. Portions are generous and taste was present. We called in our order and it was ready when we got there. Just picked up and paid - easy as pie. If I go back for a beach side gathering, I will definitely come by here again to bring to the beach. The food is soooo yum! My husband didn't even wait for me to take a picture, he started eating the bibim kooksoo (bibim guksu). Service was great! The uncle working the front walked the food out to me when he saw that I went to load up my baby and stroller (I was going to come back to grab my food) very kind of him! Whenever our family goes to Waianae Korean BBQ, it's always a treat. It's so interesting to think that Waianae has decent Korean food, since the coast is not known for a large Korean diaspora. One of the defining factors for me in an East Asian eatery is the quality of their rice. Waianae Korean BBQ does rice right--their rice is perfect, every single time. Hawaii people tend to be satisfied with wet or mushy rice, as long as it's Calrose (medium-grain) rice. But Waianae Korean BBQ goes the extra mile, and they not only use a tasty medium-grain rice, but it is never mushy or clumpy or wet. The ownership is first-generation Korean, and it is always a treat for me to practice Korean with the Korean woman on the phone when she picks up. The food, as a result, reflects a trend I've seen across the board in Hawaii--the ingredients and preparation methods have progressed with the development of South Korea, but the flavors remain reminiscent of old-school Hawaii-Korean food. My go-to is the meat jun & spicy pork combo, with baechu-gimchi (cabbage kimchi), choy sum, japchae (also spelled chapchae, but please know it's not the same as "long rice" as we know chicken long rice in Hawaiian cuisine), and the gamja-bokkeum (shoyu potato). Get the side order of mandoo (mandu) as well. I guess because Waianae Korean BBQ was established during the COVID-19 pandemic, the interior was meant to be spacious (maybe to allow for social distancing) and is very barebones (maybe to prioritize to-go and phone orders). There are some tables inside now, but it's still nothing floofy or cutesy. In true Waianae style, there is usually Hawaiian music playing over speakers--nothing really particularly "Korean" or even Asian about the ambiance, but I think that's the owners understanding their clientele. It's more Hannara than it is Million or even Chodang. (Hannara is Korean for "Han (Korean) Nation." Compare that with the name for South Korea in Korean, Hanguk, "Han Country.") In short, when you come here, although the ambiance and service feel more westside than Korean, the food is surprisingly rooted in Korea. The ladies were pleasant enough but much of the food is preprepared and served out of metal heating trays other than the BBQ which is individually prepared from outback in the kitchen. Prices were "reasonable" and this definitely reflected in the total lack of comfort, lighting or atmosphere in the waiting room / dinning room. I did notice that the floors were quite dirty and did not venture into any restroom. We stumbled along this hidden gem on our road trip towards Mermaid Cave. We ordered the kalbi combo with kalbi and meat jun. The plate lunch came with a choice of 4 veggie sides, the lady in the front was very friendly and there was a constant flow of people ordering or picking up even thought it was after lunch. I ordered takeout on Monday 8/25/25. I have never dined here and wanted to try good Korean BBQ. Ordered a bibim kooksoo, stir fry squid, mini bbq chicken, a cheeseburger & fries combo and an order of fries. The kooksoo and squid were not level spicy as ordered, more like mild and the stir fry was more soupy than stir fry. The pieces of squid were cut small about 1 inch and was very tough. The bbq chicken was as tasteless and dry. the kooksoo was unrecognizable. Overall the quality of the food is not good. You could get way better Korean style food from Yummys or Gina's. I regularly order To Go their Yook Gae Jang soup (made spicy) as a meal, which includes rice and 4 ban Chan sides. I really like this soup because it's one of the heartier ones that I've had. Every bite is loaded with glass noodles, bean sprouts & shredded beef. If u like egg, u can also dig in for that poached egg, which I'm not a fan of egg, but to each his own. They offer the soup in spicy, medium spicy or not spicy. I've had it all 3 ways and prefer it spicy. It's just enough of a kick to make the soup tasty without leaving u gasping for something cold to drink! My sides of choice are fish cake, Kim chee, cucumber Kim chee & Choi sum. Food: Let me start off my complimenting the food. Food is always the number one thing when eating at a restaurant. I personally ordered the house combo b and it was delicious, but I did deduct a star because the vegetable sides were not as fresh as I thought it could have been. The choy sum and bean sprouts were missing that crunch and tasted a few days old. It was also warm. One of my biggest pet peeves is that if something is supposed to be cold it should be cold and added in right before it's served to the customer. The Mac salad was "ehh"... it tasted warm again and it tasted like it was made with miracle whip. The good thing about the plate was the BBQ Chicken, BBQ beef, and the meat jun. This were all sooo tasty! The meat jun sauce is what makes everything and it was A1! According to my husband, the fried rice was good but it lacked that spicy kimchee flavor. My friend who had the kimchee jun plate also said it could have been a little more spicy, but the sauce made it super good. Service: The service was excellent. The lady who took our order was super nice and patient. I think her manager or the owner saw that it was getting busy and came up front to help out which I thought was really great of him to do. He could tell we were eating there and he served us our food. One thing that def stood out to me was he noticed we had kids and he took the initiative and gave us little plates and extra forks and spoons for them. My wife picked up dinner from Waianae Korean BBQ for the first time around 6:40pm last night. I got a Regular House Combo A which came with 2 scoops rice, Teri Beef, Kalbi, BBQ Chicken, a piece of shrimp tempura and 2 fried mandoo (including 4 sides) and everything tasted great! My wife got a regular Meat Jun, loved it! What really made my dinner the best was the banchan-- I typically get mayo potatoes anytime I go to a KBBQ restaurant so I was anxious to try theirs and I was not disappointed. IMMACULATE. 10/10. I will definitely be trying Waianae Korean BBQ again and hopefully next time we'll have time to dine-in. read more
