We spoiled our dinner appetite by eating ice cream first as we waited for dinner spots in Suttons Bay to become available to seat us, but I certainly did not have a problem doing that! Any time is a good time for ice cream, I believe :) The menu at Scoops 22 is overwhelmingly huge! They serve such a variety of flavors & combos that my head was spinning. I was craving something with fudge in it, but they sadly didn't really have an option that contained anything more than chocolate chunks, so I opted for a combo of a scoop of cherry/chocolate Moomer's ice cream & a scoop of cookie dough to go with it. You obviously can't really go all that wrong with ice cream and cookie dough, but the cookie dough could've tasted better. It was overwhelmingly just dominated by sickly sweet sugar rather than any kind of flavor. Either that or perhaps the combo of cherry and cookie dough just didn't really mesh well. Probably just a bad pick from me and I will play it more safe next time when I come back here! They're a great establishment that also carries several several non-dairy & vegan options that they make in house as well, which is a really wonderful thing! read more

Suttons Bay is a town that is more my style with fewer crowds, a great view, and a lot of great places to visit, including Scoops 22. Once we escaped the bustle of Leland and came to the east side of the peninsula it was time for some ice cream. We stopped at Scoops 22 where there was no line and the choices in flavors were just as impressive. I got a scoop of their tart cherry ice cream which I thought was very good. The flavor profile featured the tarter pie cherry which I thought blended well with the sweetness of the cream. The consistency was smooth without being overly rich and custard-like. Every time we're in Sutton's Bay we stop at the Ice Cream Factory for a cone. It's nothing fancy, but good locally made ice cream is available (Moomers!) in seasonal and northern Michigan friendly flavors (think lots of cherry). Hand dipped or soft serve is on the menu as well as flurries, shakes and the like. It's a simple, walk up counter run by local teens, so it's a quick and fairly unremarkable transaction, but you're not coming here for witty repartee, you're coming for tasty ice cream, which is here in spades. Ice cream was good, service was good and came out quickly, great outdoor space conveniently in the middle of the town.

Showed up at 9:10 and shop was "closed" despite online reflecting 9:30 closing. Disappointing considering how far you need to drive when deciding to go on an outting up north. Workers refused to make eye contact when we approached the window despite seeing another customer they had obviously just served walking away. Please ensure accurate hours of operations are reflected online or remove the ability for employees to arbitrarily decide they are closing early. read more

So when we came here in May 2019, the red banner around the building says "Scoops 22", not Ice Cream Factory, so that's a bit confusing. Anyway, we came here twice in our short stay in Michigan, it was that good! The combos they have for sundaes and everything else are fun and the ice cream is delicious. MOOMERS. (yes!) The Ice Cream Factory is an SB staple, residing on the corner of Saint Joseph Street & Grove Street it has been around a very long time (at least since I was small, which my nephew informs me is the "old days.") It's an ice cream institution! Located in charming Suttons Bay, if you are looking for a sweet treat old school, this is your spot. I took my toddler and aforementioned nephew (yes, even though he called me old!) for ice cream on a hot day in August. A pineapple shake, black cherry moomers cone (for moi!) and mango dole whip kiddie size later we were $10 lighter and on our way to the SB Marina to enjoy. It's a quick hop skip and a jump to enjoy your ice cream at the park or beach, which I recommend. There is also picnic seating but its pretty hot in the sun! Good stuff guys, and hey...MOOMERS. This is what summer's about -- an ice cream stand in a small town in Northern Michigan, just steps from the bay. What I loved about this place is that they had both soft serve and Moomers ice cream. I'd heard a lot about Moomers, so I was forced (yep, the ice cream gods were twisting my arm here) to try a scoop of that. Ya gotta love small town prices -- one large scoop set me back only $2.46 (tax included). In DC I'd have to pay 4 bucks for 1 scoop, and it would be significantly smaller. I dropped my change in the tip jar on the counter (labeled "College Fund"), and the young woman behind the counter very politely said "Thank you." When's the last time your big city Starbucks barista said thanks for anything you've dropped into their tip jar?! Anyway, my ice cream was good -- I got chocolate peanut butter chunk, which was a chocolate ice cream (not chocolatey enough for me, however) with lots of choc PB cup pieces. read more

Been going to this joint for decades under different names. Super happy Buchan's owns it, I would put their ice cream up against anyone, and they have Moomers too if that is your fave. Salted Caramel Crack was amazing, but really all their flavors are delicious! And the people that work there are very nice and happy even when it gets crazy busy. There is not much to say here except that this place serves big portions of delicious ice cream. They actually have a really good variety of ice cream flavors that will please just about anyone. My 3 year old son tried the Superman ice cream which he loved. He got the kid size ice cream in a dish and he couldn't finish it. I got a medium chocolate peanut butter ice cream in a dish and it was huge and delicious! What is there not to like about huge amounts of delicious ice cream?! Went there last night with two friends. Place was not busy--only one other customer at the time we ordered. Two young women were working behind the counter. They were courteous and service was very fast. Ice cream was to die for--Moomers is the absolute best! However, outside tables looked like they hadn't been wiped in days--even the benches were dirty--it was difficult to find a clean place to sit--pieces of food spilled all over and drips of dried ice cream on the tables. Also the outside trash container looked like it hadn't been scrubbed in years. If I owned this place, cleanliness would be at the top of my priority list. Large servings, good prices, and good quality. Four of us went there. I got the chocolate malt, another a scoop of ice cream, another a flurry, and another a root beer float. Everyone liked theirs, with the worst comment being "I think I like the one at home more." But for a small little corner ice cream stand in a small city, this one doesn't hurt. they have a lot of options and the servers are very nice, hence the 2 stars, but that's where the good things about this place end. we started to get soft serve every night because it was the only thing on the menu that wasn't sub-par. the blueberry ice cream had completely frozen solid blueberries, and i found a bunch of peanut butter chunks in it?? and the chocolate peanut butter was mostly giant chunks of frozen reese's w a few scoops of choc in it. the raspberry truffle tasted nothing like raspberries, it was just vanilla ice cream. my friend got a regular soft serve cone and it fell over, so instead of remaking it they just dumped it in a cup and served it to him. the slushee was just syrup in a cup. every ice cream flavor was disappointing, and we only continued to go because it was the only place open in town. if i opened a shop called scoops 0 with 0 options, it would still be better than scoops 22. there's a bucket outside for doggy water that probably tastes better than the ice cream they have. i once was in the hospital for five days with salmonella, but i would rather eat the raw chicken again than have any more scoops 22. -the scoops 22 hate club read more
