Never very busy. Food is great but sometimes takes a bit longer than other places, worth the wait though!

Every Sunday…read moremorning we try to hit up a new local coffee shop and on this morning we decided to go to Needle & Bean. Needle & Bean is located on Castle Shannon Blvd and has a clever name whenever you realize it's part record shop and part coffee shop. There was only a single other patron there whenever we arrived and he was on the way out, so we had the shop to ourselves for a bit. The shop itself is segmented into a seating area for the coffee shop patrons and the other half for the records. The inside of the shop is well lit with lots of natural light and helped by the light colored wood floors. Since I was just here for the coffee, I didn't really check out the record section of the shop and instead paid attention to the coffee and goodies. For my coffee on this morning I decided to go with a large hot americano while my wife went with a small iced americano. Then I also ordered my kids a chocolate chip cookie each and the family a brownie. Total cost was $12 which was awesome. My wife and I both really enjoyed our coffees here as the roast for the americano was super dark and rich. Since we both love darker coffees, we clearly made the right choice and it was easily one of the better coffees I have had in awhile. My kids seemed to enjoy the cookies and the brownie and so everyone was happy. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. My wife and I really enjoyed our coffees here, our kids their treats and the price was fair as well!

I like Needle & Bean. Convenient if I wanna pop-in and get a record on a whim. I love their record…read moreselection too.

I actually used to go to all the Coffee Tree Roasters locations quite regularly as they were the standard for coffee for me. For whatever reason though, I had stopped going and so I was interested to see how it stacked up. The inside of this shop is clean with a bunch of different tables to sit at, some merchandise on the back wall and then a refrigerator case near where you place your order. For my coffee on this morning I didn't see any of the holiday specials that I was looking for and so ultimately decided to go with a peppermint latte while my wife went with a peppermint mocha. My peppermint latte here left a lot to be desired unfortunately. The peppermint syrup was too strong and so my coffee sort of tasted like toothpaste with an aftertaste of coffee. Even if the coffee tasted good, which it did, as you might imagine the whole drink itself wasn't ideal. The one good thing is that my wife did enjoy her coffee drink here. The bottom line for me is that I might stop by here again in the future. While I wasn't a big fan of my coffee here, I know they definitely have better stuff.

The breakfast sammie is a staple for me and I mean look at it!! Cooked to absolute perfection the homemade English muffin really takes it to the next level! The Shakshouka was bomb the eggs were poached to perfection! The bread was nice and fresh it was soft but still sturdy enough to use to dip! The cereal milk latte is another staple for me I mean how can it not be. The espresso was delicious and the Honey Nut Cheerios was the perfect subtle flavor! Not too sweet which i appreciate. Speaking of sweet the zebra cakes were INSANE. Huge and only $5 which I thought wasn't bad! Always delicious here and vibes are great both inside and out!

Display cases were full of baked goods such as cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, cruffins, tarts, cakes, breads. I have been to the Mediterranean, and I thought that most of the baked goods here were not Mediterranean. While I waited in a slowly moving line of other customers to order from the bakery, I browsed the shelves in the market. I saw cheeses, bottled beverages such as wines, packaged foods such as grape leaves, and chocolates. I could not find price tags on all foods, so I recommend that those be added. I purchased three baked goods for a total of $15. I rate the croissticky as 5 stars, the cinnamon roll as 3.5 stars, and the raisin-oatmeal cookie as 4 stars.

I got to try their Samarkand plov/osh, Samarkand bread/naan/non, Napoleon cake, and the suzma. I really enjoyed nearly all of the items. Starting backwards with the suzma, this was kind of like labneh, the Turkish yogurt dish. Quite good, but this felt a little more liquidy while still being rich. Very strong whole milk flavor. The Uzbek bread is always delicious. They give you a huge piece of bread that is crunchy at the sides and soft in the middle. Perfect for eating any of the main entrees with, especially kebabs. Nice seed topping as well. The Samarkand plot was quite nice too. My first time ever having plov, finally! Glad to try it from this place. They give you a nice serving size. The rice is a little bit oily, and I typically like the rice to be cooked longer (it still had a pretty strong bite to it), but the flavor was nice overall. Savory from the meat, sweet (almost a bit too sweet) from the carrots, and richness from the spices and oil. I really liked that they included chickpeas as well. All in all, I quite enjoyed this place. Probably not my favorite Uzbek in the area, but still, very good. I would like to come back to try some of the other items they added.

The owner and staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly from the time we arrived until we left, often checking on our experience without being intrusive. They also helpfully explained the menu and the presence of some special treats already on the table when we arrived--there for guests coming to break their fast for that day of Ramadan. We very much enjoyed everything we ate, starting with a Samosa and Shuba (with the awesome translation of "Fur Coat"), and through our main courses of Plov, Layered Uzbek dumplings, and steak with rice. The Plov and layered dumplings were particular standouts for generous servings of perfectly seasoned dishes with complex flavor--seem like they would be particularly great entry points for folks less familiar with Uzbek cuisine. We were too full to eat dessert, but took home some honey cake for dessert. That was reminiscent of baklava with its layers of crispy cake and honey, but also very much its own thing, and definitely something I will be ordering next time, too. I worry folks will miss this local gem down at the end of the Kuhn's parking lot, and hope the word gets out--it's definitely worth a visit!
