This is a good breakfast dinner in Verona. It's always busy so be prepared for a wait, but they do a good job at moving it quickly. Service is fast and friendly. I just get a basic breakfast with eggs, bacon, potatoes but it's always really good! My husband enjoys the biscuits with sausage gravy and cinnamon French toast. This locally owned and operated spot is located in the River Town Shopping Center at 148 Allegheny River Boulevard, Freedom Square Diner is a staple for locals in Verona, and the whole area. They opened in 2013, expanding from its original Cranberry Township location, and has since carved out a niche by focusing on breakfast and lunch with a warm, community-centered approach that works. The menu is extensive and IMO breakfast is the star of the show, with standout items like the Create Your Own Omelette, the Hungryman Breakfast off a nice spread of eggs, bacon, pancakes, and home fries, that's what Matt O. had and he's now a fan. I had the Nutella French Toast that was like a homage to Elvis with bananas, strawberries and lots of sweet goodness, it was special! I also got a side of sausage gravy and biscuit to share, and these Yinzers actually nailed this Southern favorite. For lunch, the Whale of a Fish Sandwich is a big favorite here, it's hand-breaded haddock on a hoagie roll with tartar sauce and fries. Other popular dishes include the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy, the Steak Salad with garlic-marinated filet, and the Mushroom Swiss Burger with crispy fries. They even have Homemade clam chowder, I will definitely scope that out on my next visit. This is a nice local hometown meal. The food is tasty and warms the belly. Not fancy but acceptable tasteful vibes for the price and service with a smile. Quite disappointed with this place, to be honest. I've been past it so many times that I finally decided to give it a try. I came in around 12:30-1 PM. They weren't super busy, but it wasn't an empty restaurant either. I had to wait for quite a while awkwardly near the entrance before someone asked if I had gotten served. When I finally ordered, I got the mushroom Swiss burger but substituted for chicken breast. One nice thing about this place is that they still do breakfast all day. Other than that, the service just wasn't that great, and the food left much to be desired. The cheese was greasy and flavorless. The meat itself, and the fries, were packed full of oil. The chicken was rubbery -- like it had just been reheated from frozen. Not seasoned well. The bread was the best part of the sandwich. The fries also had no seasoning and had to be doused in ketchup to have any flavor. All in all, I wanted to like this place, but I didn't. Maybe their sweet offerings like pancakes and French toast are better, but the burgers aren't the best to say the least. read more

I have heard a lot about this place since it has been open, some good and some not so good. The main objections seem to be about prices and service. I went in with my eye out for both. They were pretty full and busy but I was seated pretty quickly. Being by myself, I didn't think I'd rate a priority, but I got a table in just a couple of minutes. My server was a blur moving between tables, but she was nice and friendly. I was on a bit of a time crunch, so I was concerned about my order coming out in a timely manner. I ordered breakfast and a tomato juice. I really can't say much about the juice since it is pretty hard to screw up juice. The place was buzzing and not a single surface was empty for very long. It was a moving, efficient operation but included the personal touches that make you feel welcome. My order was pretty simple; eggs over easy, English muffin, hash browns and sausage. I got my order with time to spare and didn't feel rushed to eat. The eggs were done perfectly, which isn't always the case with over easy. I wasn't blown away by the sausage, which was thin patties and salty, but the muffin and hash browns were good. I didn't find the prices out of line, although I didn't expect $4 for a glass of tomato juice. Still, for $15 or $16, it was a good meal. I was impressed enough to leave Brittany a $5 tip. I hope other places reading this don't expect 30% tips like I left here, but I thought it was deserved. My server checked back on me, got my food and check as soon as it was available and smiled the whole time. It was a good experience. I saw a breakfast special before 11, so I may go back and check that out. I overheard that some staff is rotated between a few of their locations which probably keeps things fresh. No one person would become complacent in that atmosphere. I enjoyed the food and the service. I'm only taking away a star because I didn't care for the sausage. Second time here ... Last time was awesome. It was about a year ago when we were here last, forgot how good it was. Well we remember! This place is really doing it right. Breakfast is awesome. We had the Crab Eggs Benedict and the Spinach and Tomato Eggs Benedict. Both were very good. We split them so I tried both, I think I enjoyed the Spinach and Tomato better because the crab cake with breading and bread underneath was just a little too much bread for me. At any rate, all good here the service was great from Sue our server and everyone seemed very pleasant ... Unusual for a cold day in Pittsburgh :p Prices are reasonable (see receipt). read more

Here's the deal: food is great. Coffee is great. Location is good. Staff seam pleasant and nice. No problems there. Is it a privately owned business where one would expect to pay more than a chain? Yes. I do not think that paying $30+ for two people for breakfast is realistic enough to make going here a habit. Prices n need to come down. The easiest thing to do as a server is to keep waters and coffee cups full. As long as a guest has something to drink, with our without food, they have more potential to enjoy their experience and return. Cups don't get filled enough when servers are on their phones or having much too long personal conversations with regular guests; which happens A LOT at Freedom Square. I don't want to be sitting at my table with an empty coffee cup for well over 5 minutes several times during a 45 visit. The high prices and poor service staff are why we only go here once every 3 months or so. The great food does not outway the adequate/passable wait staff. read more

Although the food is good, I won't be back. Received a lucky prizes scratch card that was refused to be reimbursed. We came back in January for it to be scratched and verified. The waitress gave it to us after she had scratched it and told us it was for BOGO free entree and we had til end of March to use it. Well we returned today March 28 to use it. They refused to honor it as the January server did not punch it. Treated us like we were lying! I've never been so embarrassed. Ruined my meal!! Shame on this business. Wow, I experienced a fight between the front end and back end managers. The "show" was an warranted and unwanted. It was a twenty minute fight. The back manager (male) through pots at the front end (female) manager. They cussed at each other in front of me, my son, my grandson and the rest of the consumers As it was heating up, there was no control or regards for being in the work place.
