This review is long overdue. I've been buying food and coffee from the Downtown location since my…read morefirst year of college (five years ago). The atmosphere inside is immediately welcoming. Few tables line the walls, but if you're lucky enough, you can claim one right before the lunch rush, when PNC employees raid the place and the soup sells out. If you stop by frequently enough, Charlie, Matt, or another employee might learn your name. The baristas are kind, personable, and have always made any mistake right. Forget the decadent desserts, hot coffee, or savory sandwiches; I keep coming back because I feel respected here. LaGourmandine is tasty, no question. But at this location? It's particularly loving and feels like home. There is free Wi-Fi, and no better place to get work done while enjoying lunch Downtown. My only complaint: be sure to say whether it's for here or to go when checking out. According to an employee, a small paper cup holds more coffee than a small ceramic cup. But coffee tastes much better in ceramic; I hate when it's mistakenly poured into paper.

Sigh. I saw that they had ceramic cups, including espresso sized cups. I ordered an espresso for…read morehere. And then they handed me a paper cup with a plastic lid. So disappointing! I try so hard not to waste materials with single use cups. I carry a travel cup. If they had only had paper cups, I would have given the barista my travel cup. I explained this, and she poured it into a (cappuccino sized!) ceramic cup for me. The espresso is good, but I prefer the espresso at Yinz, so probably won't come here again. That said, the quiches look really good here...

Mediterra Cafe is a local, family-owned cafe, bakery, and market. The cafe serves breakfast (e.g.,…read moreFrench toast, shakshuka, salmon toast, and quiche) and lunch (e.g., salads, sandwiches, and pizzas). I visited the bakery and market on a busy Saturday. Display cases were full of baked goods such as cookies, cake pops, cupcakes, cruffins, tarts, cakes, breads. I have been to the Mediterranean, and I thought that most of the baked goods here were not Mediterranean. While I waited in a slowly moving line of other customers to order from the bakery, I browsed the shelves in the market. I saw cheeses, bottled beverages such as wines, packaged foods such as grape leaves, and chocolates. I could not find price tags on all foods, so I recommend that those be added. I purchased three baked goods for a total of $15. I rate the croissticky as 5 stars, the cinnamon roll as 3.5 stars, and the raisin-oatmeal cookie as 4 stars.

The breakfast sammie is a staple for me and I mean look at it!! Cooked to absolute perfection the homemade English muffin really takes it to the next level! The Shakshouka was bomb the eggs were poached to perfection! The bread was nice and fresh it was soft but still sturdy enough to use to dip! The cereal milk latte is another staple for me I mean how can it not be. The espresso was delicious and the Honey Nut Cheerios was the perfect subtle flavor! Not too sweet which i appreciate. Speaking of sweet the zebra cakes were INSANE. Huge and only $5 which I thought wasn't bad! Always delicious here and vibes are great both inside and out!

That's good because it was colder than a witch's hoo-ha outside. After spending a lot of time al fresco at Randyland, I think I was breathing icicles by the time I saw this corner cafe, one of a local chain named for what Pittsburgh residents call themselves. It was a welcome sight because I needed something to warm myself before my final walk to the parking garage. Housed in a vintage brick building, it was a cavernous space with tall ceilings and fortunately open tables. I ordered the $4.50 Large 20-oz Cafe au Lait because I needed the extra fuel to get me through the frosty weather (Photo 9). They have Yinz merch for sale and the last of their baked goods. Oh well, I didn't need the extra calories anyway.
