I don't think I've ever written a review for a liquor store, but my experience today was so good, I just had to. It was mostly because of Leanne, who was friendly, helpful, and absolutely hilarious - I haven't laughed that hard in a while! She truly made my day. While Leanne was fantastic, I also interacted with a few other employees who were pretty darn great too. The place has such a family-run business feel to it (maybe it is?). Whatever their hiring process is at Barbur Liquor, they're doing it right. The store is conveniently located and always has what I'm looking for. 5 stars! read more

Small liquor store that carries a surprisingly large selection of brands and specialty items in a very small footprint. Staff is super friendly and helpful and they don't wait to be asked if you need assistance; they offer. Note: They sell hard liquor only; no beer or wine. For that, go next door to World Markets and pick up amazing eats at the same time. Located on that crazy, hard to navigate intersection of SW Barbur & Capital highway, off the I-5exit, the first time there is a bit of a challenge but once you figure it out, it does become a convenient place to stop when you are in this area. They have a parking lot with lots of spaces, just be careful of the others trying to get in and out based on the one way routes. The hours are a big plus; they are open until 9pm Friday and Saturdays, 8pm other nights except Sunday when they close at 7pm. During Quarantine they may have adjusted their hours so do check their website. Like all stores, they have implemented social distancing and since this is a very small shop, it's a one way route through the store. No time for browsing, choose what you need so another customer can get in. Not at all related to the experience, but I LOVE the huge Martini Glass sculpture as you enter the store! It was noon on the 4th of July when my gf and I decided to go to Barbur Liquor to buy some aperol to make a lovely aperol spritz later. We walk in grab our aperol and head to the counter. The woman asked both my gf and I for our ids and a verbal confirmation if we were over the age of 21, which we confirmed. She was about to ring us up when a man in a care bear shirt behind her asked to see my Washington ID again. I was a little confused but I complied. He flashed a light underneath it and said that my ID was fake. I actually thought he was joking so I was like that's really funny. He repeated again louder that it was fake and I told him sir I'm literally 28. He denies us again and is quite rude about it. I have never once been questioned about my ID (in multiple states) let alone denied service purchase. We walk out and there happened to be a cop there so we asked him to verify my ID and he walked in and told the man in a care bear shirt that I was verified. Care bear man said "I guess I owe you an apology".... After the cop left care bear man was anything but caring and started being rude again and his reasoning for being rude was because he was working on a holiday. I'm sorry but that's is quite literally not my problem and you shouldn't treat your paying customers like this. Because of the rudeness we experienced we decided to leave and purchase elsewhere. This is a very small liquor store with one of the worst parking lots I have ever seen. The parking lot has limited space and it rest on a small slant. It took a while for me to make it to the store because there is a barrier preventing left turns. The store carries every brand of alcohol that you would like. The staff is really nice. read more

A liquor store is a liquor store is a liquor store. Honestly, you shouldn't really walk into a liquor store with high expectations. Recently moving here from CA, it blows my mind that there isn't hard liquor sold at places like Costco, grocery stores, etc. And the closest Bevmo! is in Vancouver! That being said, my purchase here was efficient and not troublesome, which is all I can ask for from a liquor store. Staff checked in every 10 mins to make sure me and my friend were doing well (we were honestly just taking a while deciding what alc we wanted, but I appreciate helpful people checking in right?) They have a pretty decent scotch selection, everything is easy to find. This time around there was this Nebula9 representative dealing out samples of their vodka (if you don't know, Nebula9 is this organic vodka that they claim doesn't give you a hangover, gets you drunk faster because it vasodilates your blood vessels, and has some ingredient that coats your liver bile ducts so that it doesn't hurt your liver when you drink...I'm sus because it sounds too good to be true...) So this guy was making little mini moscow mules and heaven-in-your-mouth, and the samples were pretty good (sorry for the little Nebula9 ad in the middle of this review lol). At one point he knocked over his entire Nebula 9 table and some bottles broke (I felt very guilty for being the patron he was trying to serve when this happened, but I didn't knock the table or anything so whatever). They didn't question my CA ID (I HATEEEEE when people question my age or ID), they took our credit cards, and were efficient in our purchase. Overall, that's all I can really ask for from a little liquor store. Also the location is very convenient being close to my home, and there's a little parking lot so that wasn't an issue. As someone who grew up in the neighborhood I've been going here for 25+ years now. It used to be the go to place for liquor as it was the only place in town open until 10pm on weekends however that has changed. It's now a place that only caters to serving liquor to bars in the area and couldn't care less about its regular customers and occasional foot traffic. The employees have been instructed to avoid selling product that's been "promised" to their accounts which is against the rules of the OLCC. They would rather keep product on hand hidden in the back rather than put it on the shelves making it obtainable to the customer. How do I know this you might ask? Ive worked in the service industry for several years and used to manage a liquor store in Portland so I'm well versed in how things work. The owner and his son would rather cater to their bar accounts than make product available to their walk in customers. Sounds shady doesn't it? Well that's because it is and violates the rules put in place by the OLCC. Did you know that there is a website where you can see what's in stock on a daily basis? It's even advertised on their website as well as offering tours which I have been declined access. Nothing like knowing what you're looking for is not only in stock but there's 40-60 bottles of it on any given day but the employees have been instructed to tell customers that it's not available or has been "sold to bars" Nothing like being lied to your face by someone who can't look you directly in the eyes because they're embarrassed by the owners business practices. If you're looking for a liquor store that doesn't give AF about its regular customers then this place is for you, thanks George & Pete! read more

The owner, who I believe is the owner, is always at the checkout, he didn't believe that I spoke or understood English, because yes, I don't look from here and it's obvious. Then he assumed that if he charged me double I wouldn't understand, but to his surprise I did understand that he was trying to rob me. I wonder, how many people has he robbed and unfortunately they didn't realize it? How sad, what a bad person. read more

They have always had enough employees to serve all their customers and answer honestly questions honestly, which is greatly appreciated. If they know about what I've asked about, they readily share their knowledge and opinions and if they don't know, they say as much and try to find someone who can answer. A liqour store is a liquor store....but this one is my favorite for a few reasons. 1) Hours. They are open late and on weekends. 2) Location. They are right on my way home from work in a very central Portland location. 3) They have always carried everything I am looking for, no matter how random or rare. 4) Most importantly - their staff is incredibly knowledgeable about drinks (practically mixologists - or former bartenders themselves) and always know how to help me find the right liquor and mixers for whatever drink I am wanting to make at home. read more

Liquor places are kinda like gas stations, right? The product is pretty consistent. The prices vary from place to place, but only ever so slightly. You frequent the ones on your regular route, or nearest your house. Decor and environment don't mean that much, so long as they have the key liquid in question. Once you're established, the only thing that will keep you from returning is a rude interaction or major inconvenience, and it's unlikely you'll go out of your way for any particular store. It sounds like maybe this store has changed hands in the last couple of years, because I don't see any of the issues reported by previous Yelpers and Yelpettes. They take my card happily. They have everything I want, and offer loads of local distillery options, and they make a point of being friendly and helpful but not all up in your grille whilst you ponder your potent potentials. And, it's conveniently on my route home from work, so: fill 'er up. read more

What can I say.. when all the other liquor stores are closed this is the place to go. The thing that this place going for itself are the hours. As mentioned by others it is open till 10pm most days as well as actually being open on a Sunday. In OREGON the hours are definitely a rarity. I would have rated them 5 stars (because of the hours) however, this place is lacking in other important features - they DONT take credit cards - cash only, and everything is behind the counter - which just isn't as fun. read more

The day crew is 10/10. Everyone is super helpful, knowledgeable about their whiskey, and genuinely friendly. The night crew is pretty rough. I've had some really terrible service after 7pm here and I'll actually drive the distance past this location to Tigard now if I'm going in the evening. read more

The heavy set guy that works here has a chip on his shoulder. When I was in there he had attitude with customers. The lady that was working with him, same way. Clearly they are not meant to work this type of job. The energy was hostile and not good. They are known for kicking people out if they say anything in a way they do not like. I am surprised this guy is still employed. He seems miserable. Part of running a business is to bring in money not turn people away. No interest in going back to this store. They refused service to someone and I overheard them say if anyone else comes in to buy this type of alcohol tell them no. They need to grow up. The world needs kinder people not people like this. Great customer service and selection! I like how they optimized the number of spaces in the parking lot, but it can be a challenge to maneuver. Conveniently located right off the freeway. Very easy to get to southbound 5 from the store. read more

I'm still not used to the whole Liquor store thing here in Oregon. My friend and I went to the liquor store close to my apartment one night, only to find they closed at 7pm, ON A FRIDAY NIGHT. Devastating. Come to find out, most of the liquor stores close around that time. So, we frantically looked up liquor stores in the area and found that Barbur Liquors was open until 10pm. Score!! It was about 9:40p by the time we started driving. We made it in 15 minutes or so to find a really crowded parking lot. NBD. We walked in, checked out the decent selection and then stood in line to purchase the goods. 4 stars because they are open late. Otherwise, this is just any other liquor store. Standard liquor store with lots and lots and lots of liquors. Prices are about the same as other liquor stores in this city. Friendly service, but they accept cash only (BIG BOOOOOO). There's an ATM machine, but they will charge you service fee ($2 from ATM machine + $2 from your bank). I just wish next time when I will make another visit to this liquor store, I can wear my Snooki's Halloween costume again. It felt like I was the real Snooki and I was totally into my character. I ended up spent $$$ here and a bad hungover the next day. So much for fist pumpins. read more

If you want beer, you'll need to go next door for the amazing selection offered by Barbur World Foods. But if you want hard liquor, this is your place, with a generous selection and store staff that have more than a passing knowledge of what they're selling. I needed to add a correction here to the other two reviews. They have done a remodel and you can now walk right up to the shelves and grab the bottle you want. Cash only doesn't seem like it should be a problem. I mean if you are an alcoholic should you really be buying booze with a credit card? Really? Oh man, stopped here once out of convenience, but never again... Even though there were a handful of very young revelers right by the door, coming in and out repeatedly, one of the employees literally followed me, as if he was accompanying me while shopping, the entire time I was in there. Hmm, if I were worried about 5-finger discounts at my liquor store, I think I'd be a bit more concerned about the hooligans hanging right by the door than the boring, middle aged woman. Just sayin'... When I got back to the car, my husband informed me that some dude had approached him and asked if he wanted to buy some discounted meat from some local steakhouse. Wtf?! This is the best liquor store in town. Best selection, accommodates small and large restaurants and bars all over town! I've gotten to know and admire George's way of doing business over the years, and now getting to know his son. I really cannot say enough nice things about this place! read more

The new owners now accept credit/debit cards. These folks make sure you have the right stuff to go with your booze. I have never had to order a particular brand because they seem to always have what I want, but I don't think that would be a problem. read more

I need to restock my rum library about once every 3 to 4 years, as I'm not a heavy hard liquor drinker. But it was that time, and I was very pleased with their selection of better rums. Most places treat the category as an afterthought. The prices were fair--no real bargains to be found, but they also weren't committed to highway robbery. The store folks were helpful. There are 3-4 employees in a small store. One waits outside the door to restrict customers in the store to 5 at a time. Because of the way he is positioned at the entrance it makes passing beyond a 2ft distance impossible. None of the 4 employees I saw in this very small store were wearing a face mask as per Governor's executive order for businesses. Avoid this store until they take appropriate measure to protect customers. read more

This place has fair selection. They don't have ones that I could easily find in another liquor stores. What gives this place good rating is the customer service. Just standing here longer than a minute, someone will be offering help. If one couldn't answer your question, another will step in to help. I learned so much in this place. I don't mind coming in here and picking up a new bottle to try. read more

I've been to a lot of liquor stores in Oregon, and Barbur does have a lot of nice staff, so why am I giving this one star? You know the freebies you get sometimes when you buy bottles? The owner likes to take those items and sell them for money...for HIMSELF. The FREE things you get normally from other liquor stores you won't get with this stingy place. (PS don't tip the tip jar, the employees don't even benefit). When I asked an employee why a shaker was $5 when my friend got two for free, they couldn't even answer me. What a joke. read more

Normally I enjoy coming here, but the past two times I've come in, my legitimate ID has been rejected in the rudest and most dismissive manner imaginable. It's one middle-aged employee with a short haircut who wears a glass blown pendant who has been the meanest, and the only one to reject my ID. Every other employee is sweet and conversational but this guy sucks. He won't even double check my ID. I'm 22 and don't look 16 or anything. They accepted my boyfriend's nearly-expired, freshly 21 ID (from the same state as me) which makes me feel as though I were dealt with in a sexist manner. Additionally, my ID has never been rejected anywhere else. I've been calm and polite both instances - and this man has become irate and clearly made uncomfortable with my presence. It is humiliating to be treated so poorly and with such condescension as I was tonight. This probably won't make a difference to their business because liquor stores are so sparse in Oregon. Maybe they could just re-train this guy in both the cu As convenient Barbur liquor is, I am hesitant to patronize it ever again (as if I could anyway) - even with a new ID. I have had good service at Barbur Liquor. Upon entering the store, on 4/27, I noted that only 1out of 3 employees were wearing masks. I asked the cashier, who was wearing a mask, why everyone wasn't. He pulled down his mask, rolled his eyes at his fellow employee and made a dismissive verbal gesture to me..phuf. The employees have no right to potentially expose customers to Covid 19. Go to felony flats and tell me how you feel (that isn't even that bad) But about the actual customer service there, AWESOME.
