Wizer's has been my go to wine retailer for years. Jim always leads me to a wine that I never knew that was excellent. Discounts for 6 or more bottles is a nice savings. Wizer's is a gem. read more

I guess business is really good here. When you walk in, you barely get greeted. Then, you can wander around without anyone bothering to assist. Why own a wine shop if you don't want to deal with customers? I won't come back. Plenty of other places to buy wine. read more

I will never attempt to buy anything here again. I called last Saturday morning just after they opened to ask if they had a wine, that a wine search website said they had. I left a message letting them know that I would like to verify it was in stock before making the hour long drive to the shop. After never hearing anything back, we bought two wines from a local shop, and moved on with our weekend. Today, TUESDAY I finally received a call from these guys, and when I told him I never heard back from them so we bought wine elsewhere, his snarky reply was "well we don't that wine"... Ok, well.... you could've told me that FOUR days ago. Sorry, but the professional thing to do would've been to let me know that last Saturday. Wizer's..? No thanks. read more

Overall: Messy, claustrophobic and not welcoming. I met someone at the front who was very nice and knowledgeable, and he said to go upstairs because Jim was doing tastings. I go upstairs to someone sitting at a computer eating (not lunch time) and I said, "Oh hi are you Jim?" To which there was really no reply or follow up with maybe something like, "Oh I hear you want to try some wines" (And I know he heard us talking downstairs about going upstairs to see him). People need to quit bitching about the service. I've been to wizers plenty of times and the service is nothing short of EXCELLENT. Sure, the shopkeeps don't approach you and ask what you're looking for, but that doesn't mean they're not approachable. From my personal experience, anytime you have a question for Tom (one of the keepers there) he will go out of his way to make sure you make an informed decision, even if all you're spending is $20. So if you go into the shop and think you're getting a cold shoulder, it's probably because the keeps would rather not pester you. But just know that they are truly passionate about wine and helping customers. Also, if you're in the market for some Italian, French, or Spanish wines, I can't think of a better shop that has a better selection. These guys definitely focus on the old world of wine more than the new and do a great job of it. read more

Had not been to this store since it moved. Just moved back to town and was really happy to discover these guys again. I was looking for a hard to fine wine from France, they had it and also recommended some great eastern Washington state Syrahs. They are passionate, knowledgeable and have great wines. I highly recommend this place if you truly love wine. read more

Let me preface this by saying I didn't visit the store. I live in Sacramento. I wanted to replace a 2002 Col Solare that was just fantastic. I picked it up on clearance at a Safeway in Davis, CA around 2006. It was sort of hard to find, but Wizer's had it in stock. I made the transaction over the phone with Jim/Tom and it went real well. If I need a fine wine again I'll probably order from them again. Very good customer service!! read more

I have lived down the street from Wizer's for almost a year, and it wasn't until recently that I discovered this place. This great little grocery store needs a bit more buzz since shopping here totally feels like a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie (see grocery shopping scene in "28 Days Later"). It's a great family owned business that's tucked away in that funky business space off Avenue A and 1st. They have an awesome selection and if you snoop around, you're going to find some good deals on great products (my friend told me that they may have the lowest prices on Stumptown coffee at any grocery store she's seen). They also have a killer selection Bob's Red Mill goodies. The staff is courteous, super friendly and helpful. And seriously, how could they not be considering that I was only one of four patrons shopping at the time? This place is charming and stocked with great finds. Yes, some of these finds are pricier than others, but you won't find more unique or local items at other grocery spots in Lake O. If you're looking for charm, it certainly beats shopping at Albertson's and Safeway. Come shop at Wizer's and tell all your friends! read more

I've never seen a grocery like this. Every item here is awesome in some way. The stock items are epicurean delights from people who make good products. rather than the lab-made food at bigger groceries. This is what kills me about you, Lake Oswego. You know what shoes to wear, what cars to drive, but the things you put in your mouth! Wizer's is an amazing little grocery, each aisle packed with nifty things. Good butter, fine beer, I can find quality products to cook with. But the aisles are empty of people, and you all flock to Safeway, where you can buy a pancake batter dispenser that shapes your pancake like a talking bubble, so you can write on it with the synthetic syrup blends they sell. Seriously an odd old grocery store. I have never seen more than one other person in there shopping, and I feel like I've gone back in time. It has pretty classical music playing, but with the outdated decor, weird smell (if you have been there you know what I'm talking about) and complete lack of customers just makes it seem kind of creepy. It is very expensive, and the produce section is always pretty wilted. The deli case is also never fresh looking and usually it's closed with saran wrap covering everything. HOWEVER the customer service is always great. They greet you upon entering, are quick to check you out and are incredibly genuine. I almost gave them 3 stars when I considered their service, but everything else is so negative, that I had to go with 2. read more

I had heard about this place from a friend and thought I would check it out when I was free on a Saturday. It was very easy to find and visible from the street. When I entered the front I was amazed at just how many wines this place had. It can be very overwhelming, fortunately the staff there is very friendly and knowledgeable. They told me they carry wines from all over. I personally was looking for a local wine which they have plenty to choose from, but noticed they have many older wines that are harder to find. While searching for just the right wine to purchase I enjoyed some free wine tasting which they do on Saturdays. Overall I had a great experience at Wizer's fine wines and will be definitely coming back to get my next bottle of wine! read more

I can see why they are going out of business. Even with the current 20% off liquidation sale, the prices are still higher than other places. The aisles are small, it looks like 1975 in there. In the Obama nation, people cannot afford to shop at places like that. read more

Times change but Wizer's was a great local grocery store. Sure it didn't have the best produce or sometimes meat, BUT... the goods selection was great! Holiday time was the best with candies and chocolates from all over... never to be seen elsewhere. My kids spent a lot of time in the store just learning about selections. Oh did I mention the Easter Egg hunt they used to have for the kids.... yea in the store! They would block off a bunch of isles and put eggs on the shelves and lets the kids at it...it was so cool. I don't think anybody in the country does that! Moved to Santa Barbara and the there is nothing like (and service suck in SB!!!). Great to hear that they are keep the wine store open. read more

I went into the Wizer today just to check and see if there was any tearing of hair or other visible signs of grief that Wizers in its present form is departing. All the magazines are gone and everything is 40% off. ( And as far as I know, refills on coffee are totally free, your first cup costing you about 98 cents.) I bought some tuna, and completely unnecessarily, some chocolate covered almonds. Then I plopped down in one of the chairs outside of Wizers. Sitting there on a nearby chair with a camera was a man maybe in his 50s, with a mournful look, and no apparent purposeful activity. Immediately I knew. "Are you mourning for Wizer's?" I asked. "Yes." He answered. He was looking at the metal on the railings of the the staircase going down into the garage. "When I was four, the game was to keep my hand on top of the railing all the way down. It's hard to say, but when are you a kid, everything looks different... and there is something about the way this place is designed that totally captivated me." I opened my bag of almonds and popped one in my mouth. He talked about always knowing Wizers was there when he passed by. Then suddenly, he passed by last week, and knew something was different. *(Maybe it was the big signs saying, "OUR LOSS IS YOUR GAIN: 30% off sale.") Whatever tipped him off, he suddenly realized a part of his past was about to go under. So he came in with his camera to take pictures of the inside of Wizer's and outside of the building. "I used to take my dog around outside the building" he said. The way he talked about it, I thought his dog was still alive- but no, this was his dog in the 70s, when he was a kid. Definitively, this building opened in 1960, he said, because he was in it then, running his hands over the railings. I'm sure he would have told me more about just what it was that captivated him about Wizers, but I felt it necessary to interrupt him with talk about old buildings, kindergarten teachers, and polyester. I had an urge to offer him some chocolate almonds, as you would offer condolences with candy to a little kid, but instead, by the end of the conversation, I'd finished them myself. His wife came by, and they went back in to snap up some vinegar for 40% off. read more
