I was on this side of town picking something up and had a little time to spare so I decided to pop…read moreover to the lake and see what the trail was all about. I spent about 10 minutes walking in one direction and then had to turn around to make my appointment but in that 20 minutes, I fell in love with this place. The trail itself is really lovely. You can tell that it is very well maintained and not overgrown next to the path. The small bridges for pedestrians to walk over along the path are a nice touch as well. So much of the trail is shaded and this was a particularly cool day which made me excited to come back in the fall and see the leaves change. I saw two deer while I was there both somewhat close to the path and completely visible, and I passed a handful of other people, enjoying the trail that day, including a handful of leashed dogs which are allowed on the trail. The trail is six or 7 miles long so definitely plan for a long day if you plan to do the whole Lake, but there are two loops that you can do in a shorter amount of time or you can do what I did and park at one of the parking lots do a small walk and then turn around and go back.

There have been so many changes in recent years due to the new addition to Westgate Elementary School next door. The parking lot coming in off Hascall is completely different. The park itself had some construction in recent years. The scary and probably dangerous tunnel has been leveled and replaced as has the sidewalks, stairs, and pathways around it. There's all new playground furniture. The dense tree line separating the park from the mortuary next door is gone. There is still a lot of open land to walk my dogs. I always feel pretty safe here, especially now, though there are always some randos sitting alone in their cars but I suspect that's all parks.

I've only met a few fellow owners, but every one I meet is nice! Bring a book, Bring a Sandwich, and BYOD...or else it's weird if you don't bring a dog. However, there are posted rules…read morerequiring certain breeds to wear a muzzle, and during one visit a dog who should have been muzzled attacked my Goldendoodle without any provocation. My dog ended up bleeding and needed an antibiotic injection from the vet. What made the situation worse was that the other owner did nothing to intervene, and we had to physically separate the dogs ourselves. It was frightening and completely avoidable if the posted rules had been followed. I hope the park enforces its guidelines more strictly so everyone's pets can stay safe.
