I chose Barkeaters for my family birthday lunch and I was so pleasantly surprised! It was the first-time dining there for all nine of us and we all left so full and pleased. I chose the Korean BBQ Wings as my appetizer which were a delish spice level and a perfect amount for one, yet I chose to share. We all loved them! They were garnished with green onions and lemongrass and crispy good! My entrée was the Beet Salad tossed with walnuts, goat cheese, and julienned-apples. The vinaigrette tossing the fresh, varied greens was so savory light and bright it lifted the whole dish. The portion was bountiful and studded with tons of the goodies! My guests chose the sandwiches, the Specials, the soup, the fish & chips, the Smash Burger, on and on. All were rated high! Kudos for plenty of gluten-free options beyond the usual salad! The owner was present and lovely as were her waitstaff. Knowing it was my birthday occasion, I was treated to their usual dinnertime treat of dark chocolate-pretzel bark so divine that we all left with a smile. We stopped in for lunch after our amazing visit to nearby Shelburne Farms ( a must ) and were overall satisfied with our meal and experience. We ordered the smash burger which was tasty and well portioned along with a good amount of fries, my wife had the veggie burger with sweet fries which she enjoyed and my so ordered the grilled cheese with bacon and tomato soup. The prices were fair and the service was good with a nice friendly atmosphere and good location. Next time in South Burlington be sure to stop in - I'm sure Dinner is just as good ! read more

Grilled cheese and tomato soup was awful. The "soup" was a tomato purée- not at all a soup consistency and there was no cheese in the grilled cheese- just two stale pieces of bread. It was inedible. The hostess and ambiance were fantastic. Then it went downhill. The server took at least 10 minutes for drinks and when asked for a glass for the beer she forgot and had to be reminded. My food order was wrong. She blamed the chef and didn't offer to make it right. I let it go because I didn't want to wait another 25 minutes for food. She forgot to bring our second drink and blamed the bartender. She got our split payment wrong. The food wasn't good... greasy fish and chips, flavorless and dry garden burger, and soggy Ruben. Not near full house and after 25 minutes at lunch on a Tuesday we haven't even got our soup.

Showed up with 7 in our party at 6pm on a Wednesday, was seated promptly and drinks to the table in a fast manner as well. Our server was pleasant and made some good suggestions for both apps and entrees. Some in our party had the smash burger special and were pleased with the taste and quality of them. Lots of 'fixings' to go on top, a nice variety! The beet salad with steak on top was a hit, flavorful salad and the steak was nice and tender for what looked like steak-bites. I had the Nom Tok Beef Salad and it really reminded me of a Vietnamese dish 'Bún Bò Xả Ớt' ...very tasty and would definitely get it again! All of the descriptions of the dishes were spot on, no disappointments here. Service was relaxed but efficient, everything arrived as it was ordered and they kept our beverages filled. All in all, a good experience. Will definitely come back to try some of the other dishes. I like that they use local produce in most, if not all of their dishes. read more

We were promptly greeted. The inside is clean and rustic. It was a quiet place. We ordered our food based on likes. We had the corn chowder which was very tasty. The theme was most items were higher on the salt side. I ordered the burnt ends poutine. It was far from any burnt ends I have ever had. It was glazed pork bits and fatty. BBQ sauce wasn't anything special. The cheese was even disappointing being in Vermont. Wife ordered the Barkeaters burger. It was a dry burger and nothing spectacular even with all the ingredients. TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY After a wonderful morning at Shelburne Museum, we looked for a good place for lunch. Barkeaters Restaurant came up in our search and it was close. We took the easy out and it proved to be a major mistake. We were expecting "Vermont Cuisine in a relaxed Adirondack setting" which is their definition of themselves. They are taking some serious liberties with that definition. The atmosphere of the place was dark and unwelcoming with most of the seating left vacant. That should have been our message to turn around and leave, but we were tired and decided to give them a try. We placed our orders and 40 minutes later got up to leave without eating. That is when our food arrived with profuse apologies about the time it had taken to prepare. If it had taken only ten minutes longer we could have been gone and avoided the disgusting stuff they served and payment for what they called food. One dish was a salad with chicken that looked like bleached strings of something that had no flavor. The other dish was a simple(?) Reuben sandwich. Don't know how you make a Reuben tough, but they managed. Moreover, it was tasteless. Any resemblance to "Vermont Cuisine" must have been delivered somewhere else. Management apologized by saying they were breaking in a new chef. They were quick to collect payment for the full plates left on the table. It will take more than a new chef to make this place a winner. read more

Nice cozy restaurant ggood customer service but the foods is horrible. Our reservation at 6:30pm we order special of the day pumpkin pasta which was all gone at 6:30pm. So we orders these: Crispy Calamari Chef's Choice Pasta Bistro Filet 2 diet coke The Calamari salty salty! Chef's Choice pasta was nothing but Pasta swimming in melted cheese worse Pasta I ever had in my life! Bistro Filet meet was so tough cook in a wird sour tasting wine. Honestly, I had higher hopes for this place based on previous reviews. Upon entering the girl seemed kind of flustered that I didn't have a reservation. I showed up a little after 5 pm, kinda early since they open at 4 for dinner. Once seated I got the calamari as an appetizer. If you've ever had the cartilage from chicken, that was the texture of the calamari. Not enjoyable at all. For an entree I got the smash burger and fries. Each patty was cooked different. 1 was overcooked and the other was still pink. The taste wasn't anything you couldn't make at home. The fries were the best part of the whole meal and I'm pretty sure they were previously frozen and not made in-house. My waitress was nice and attentive though. Upon leaving around 6 pm there were still open tables so I don't understand what the issue was with seating me when I arrived. read more

Sensational! Went here for the first time last night and got the Korean wings, ratatouille, and calamari. Others got the Elonte salad, Schwarma bowl and smash burger. It was so darn good! I see where I reviewed this business 10 years ago. How time flies. Well, the business has just been purchased by new owners, and the writeup in Seven Days was delicious. They are open from 11:30 to 8. On a Saturday around 3, I decided to give them a try. Bad choice the menu for their off hours is minimal. I should have realized that when I walked into an empty space. They have soup for lunch and dinner but can't serve it in the middle of the afternoon? I hope someone in foodland can explain to me what this thing called smashed burgers are? What a total disappointment, what a ruination of good meat. But hey, they serve you 2 patties. Should I have gone to Al's French Fries for hamburg patties? I wish I could have given a B+to the fries. Service was good . Take it from me , if you like to eat in the middle of the afternoon go to the Shelburne Tap House. Their whole menu is available, done beautifully. read more

Had no idea what a hot commodity this place would be to eat at on a Wednesday evening slightly after 5pm. Almost every table was full and reservations were recommended. Luckily we got a table for four. Ended up getting the Short Rib Poutine for our starter. I guess being so close to Canada a dish like this permeates to VT but us being out of towners were enthralled by that menu choice. Ended up getting the $10 Wednesday burger and fries deal which came with a local draft. Absolutely out of site combo. We went for an early dinner and had a great meal! Service fast and friendly, the food was excellent and the vibe was very chill.

Food was excellent. BUT, i had a really disappointing experience: 1. I'm allergic to goat cheese. They would not allow a substitution to a different cheese (eg, Parmesan). Thus was on an order of salad with salmon. 2. I did not understand that 'cured' salmon was not a cooked filet. I asked for the salmon to be well cooked and was told that the salmon wasn't cooked. I tried to change my order, but they had already prepared it. So the best they could do was take the salmon off the salad and add chicken, AND charged me an extra $8 for the chicken. Then they asked me how i was doing! I said i was so disappointed that i was writing a Yelp review. The owner started arguing and scolding me. I had to ask her to leave. (The salad was delicious!) The owner's husband then approached us and offered to comp the meal. We told him to charge us for the meal, but not for the extra chicken. He definitely saved the day, but the owner needs to take a course in customer-facing skills. read more
