Tried Barley Mac for brunch today. We had the lobster Mac and cheese, banana foster french toast, Nutella Johnny cakes, and the southern chicken sausage gravy. I liked the lobster Mac the best. Tried it with some old bay hot sauce, which gave it a little kick. The banana foster French toast was tasty but looked like something I attempted at home. The bananas foster was a little mushy, so the presentation didn't make me want to dive right in, and the only reason the bread was hot was because of the bananas foster. I would have preferred a thicker brioche or the banana foster on the side to avoid soggy bread. The chicken sausage gravy was good, as were the Nutella johnny cakes. We also had the brunch mule and orange juice. Both were underwhelming. The mule gave me a headache. Atmosphere was cool with good music playing and the service was great. It was pretty empty when we arrived at 11:20, so that seems to be a good time to go. It started to pick up when we left but it still wasn't crowded. I really enjoy Barley MAC. This is my third dining experience here and always my first choice for meeting up with friends in Arlington. I stopped in last night to meet a friend for dinner. I walked in about 7pm. Despite the rain, It was a light crowd but steady. I ordered a glass of Malbec and it hit the spot. We decided to share a few appetizers. To be exact, we ordered 4 items including the crispy Brussels sprouts, pork belly?, mussels, and Tuna tartare. Can I just say Everything was delicious! The plates can be shared among people. Let's talk happy hour! It's my favorite time of the day. Over at Barley Mac, 4-7 Mon-Sat, is when they're serving it and it's where you wanna be. I brought my son and we had a nice mix of food while I have some adult beverages. You have to sit at the bar area to enjoy this menu, but there's ample seating with friendly and prompt service. Here's a quick breakdown of what we tried. We started with the Deviled eggs with pepper and bacon. This was a big winner for me and I would order it again. We also tried a cheese pizza and at $9, it is a great deal, with a decent taste and it went well with my whiskey sour. We added a side of pork shoulder tacos with a nice creme sauce. This is a Rosslyn go-to. I've been here twice in person and once via a food delivery service. The mac and cheese is the best one I've found in the area by a mile. I've tried the burger, one of the pizzas, and then the caesar salad. If you get fries, don't be shy and order the truffle fries, they're the one. Overall, great spot. They have brunch too and, based on peeping other tables, they give you the champagne bottle which is always fun. It's a short-ish (albeit up) walk from the metro station. Barley Mac has been on my list for awhile after a friend recommended it. My wife, toddler, and I visited for Saturday brunch around 11:30am and left disappointed. Before I get into that, here's what to love: Space: It's spacious with a large indoor dining area that's beautifully designed and a less beautifully designed outdoor patio. We were able to walk in without a reservation. Kid-friendly: It's very kid-friendly. They immediately brought us a high chair for our toddler and crayons and a coloring paper. Drinks: We ordered a bottle of champagne and two purees to add to it for mimosas for only $15. The prickly pear juice was excellent. Here's what we didn't love: Food: Everything we ordered was not very good. My wife ordered the burger. The fries it came with were not salted, cold, and not good. The burger itself was average. My eggs benedict had cooked spinach on it giving it a bitter taste. Yuck. The hashbrowns it came with were unsalted and bland. Service: They were slow and offputting. Every time they stopped by, which was almost never, they'd leave quickly before we were done ordering. It was so odd. All in all, Barley Mac is NOT a restaurant to make a trip for. Came here for lunch with friends and got the garden salad with grilled chicken. The chicken was dry and the salad was average, although the balsamic vinagrette dressing was good, not worth the price. My friends all ordered the mac and cheese and I tried my partner's and we both though that it was too bland. The serving size is also rather small. Also when we went at 11:30AM, the server gave us both the brunch and lunch menu but said that we may not be able to order items off the lunch menu because she's had the chef refuse to make them (and the manager was on vacation). It was absolutely fresh and the wonton on top of it were crispy fresh as well. Tried the calamari which was absolutely amazing as well. Crispy and not overcooked at all. First time experiencing this restaurant which was for a relative's birthday dinner. The menu was fine and an interesting drink selections. I had the wedge salad and added chicken, truffle fries. The chicken added to the salad was great! I had the sangria as well (not pictured) priced $10 and it was great. I gave his establishment a 3/5 due to the wait time with our drinks. Meh. Been here for dinner and brunch. The food is good, well presented and made using good ingredients. But portions are small and the prices are really high compared to other places in the area doing similar things, with nothing else about the restaurant that is special enough to justify the price difference. Service quality has always hovered around the bare minimum acceptable. Decor and ambiance are fine but nothing amazing. Most recently, my $16 benedict with home fries left me still hungry and my poached eggs came out ice cold. The one standout is the classic cocktails - well prepared, well portioned and well presented for a reasonable price. Come for cocktails and maybe an app or fries and then go across the street to Guajillo or Mele for your actual meal. read more

My cousin lives right around the corner and wanted to eat brunch here. We were able to walk in and get seated pretty quickly. Their drink menu looked great but I went with a safe mimosa (which I regret since they had some creative drinks which would've been fun to try). For my entree, I ordered the Barley Mac burger and it was honestly one of the tastiest burgers I've had in a while. I asked for it to be cooked medium and the patty tasted awesome. The tomato jam, arugula, and provolone also added ton of flavor, while the bacon acted like the cherry on top of a sundae. The fries were okay. I initially thought it was a little overpriced but I think it's worth it after having a taste. My cousin's Nutella pancake however looked pretty depressing. Both cocktails were good and not watered down. As far as food, we just ordered a bunch of items from the Happy Hour menu because the prices were awesome. We got the Crispy Brussels with pineapple and pork belly for $6. Then followed by the Pizza Pepperoni and Wagyu Beef Meatballs. Everything was pretty impressive. The brussels were nicely charred with bits of tasty pork belly. The pizza was $9 and it's big enough for 2. The toppings were fresh and the dough was toasty. The meatballs had great flavor and the sauce was on point. It came with 2 meatballs for $7. We really enjoyed our visit here. The bartender was attentive. We were surprised to walk in at 6pm to find literally one other party there and then just a couple people at the bar. We should have just left. I remember when this place opened and it probably was great before Covid. The booth seats are uncomfortable. They're narrow, they're also ripping everywhere.. it looks terrible. Imagine how The Continental was before they closed. That was how bad the seats were. We got soups to start. French onion and lobster bisque. Lobster bisque had such a canned seafood taste. Like canned tuna and canned shrimp have, if you've ever been so lucky to have canned shrimp. My French onion was just so full of undercooked onions... onions that were just sautéed for about 5 mins and then put at the bottom of a soup crock, covered with beef broth, a huge soggy piece of bread, and two THICK a pieces of Swiss. That cheese was so hard to get through.. and so much of it was over cooked that even when mixed into the broth it stayed together and didn't melt. The price of bread was fine, but the edges were so tough. The broth was the star of the show especially when I got to the undercooked onions at the bottom. What a disservice to French onion soup! Our entrees arrived and.. I wanted to like it. Cajun pasta should be FULL OF FLAVOR! It wasn't. And the server even came by to ask, while I was eating, if I wanted hot sauce because they always needed hot sauce. It was welcome.. it needed hot sauce and more flavor. Great place for happy hour! Nice deals on a variety of apps and cocktails ($5 - $10). I really like how the happy hour is from 3 to 8pm (HH starts back up again at 10pm!) with plenty of high top tables. I really liked the fruity white sangria on happy hour. Typically, I'm not a fan of sangria as it's typically bad wine offset by juice and sugar, but the house sangria was surprisingly good and not overly sweet. The wood-fired Margarita pizza is delicious, I love the soft chewy dough and pillowy crust. I wasn't a big fan of the deviled eggs, they weren't very flavorful. The truffle mac and cheese was a bit disappointing for $10. I'm surprised that it didn't make the cut for the happy hour menu. Where was the truffle oil? I was searching around and couldn't find it. I wish the mac and cheese was creamier and didn't quite live up to the name. The Tawny & Spice cocktail is quite potent and packs a punch! It's a cocktail of port, bourbon, bitters and sweetened with chai syrup. I enjoyed it and got a 2nd round although it's not on happy hour. The red sangria (not on happy hour, only the white one is on happy hour) with apple brandy and fig puree was pretty tasty that my friend ordered, and will save that for next time! I have come here for brunch and got the spinach and hearty mushroom omelette. The cheesy omelette was quite filling with 3 eggs and loaded with vegetables. The strawberry basil mimosa was delicious and the best part of my meal! The passionfruit mimosa wasn't as good and will stick to the strawberry basil. Although Barley Mac is a nice brunch spot, I prefer coming here for happy hour as the deals are better. As Barley Mac is in between Rosslyn and Courthouse, I've walked from both stations. If you're looking to get a quick work out in and an uphill climb, then get off at Rosslyn, which is a bit closer. If you like a longer easy downhill walk, then get off at Courthouse. Either way, Barley Mac is a short 10 min walk and worth the trek! read more

Food was great. Service was awful. We had a large table of about 8 for brunch. Everyone ordered simple menu items and no appetizers. We had to wait almost 20 minutes to wait for our waitress to come back and take our order. There was no one in the restaurant there may have been one other two top in the restaurant. When the bill came she told us she could not remember what everyone ordered and acted like it was an inconvenience to split our bill 3 ways. If you are going to do an auto gratuity with parties larger than 5 than your servers better know what they're doing and know the menu. We were beyond disappointed in our service. Just because we had a larger party with a guaranteed tip doesn't mean our service should be that bad with no one else in the restaurant. read more
